Night’s Nomenclature

In the midst of the blue and purple neon lights, under the gray, metallic sky, it is the frontier of all data, the aftermath of a scientific revolution, also the border of fiction and reality.

Steel versus body; the past and the future.

Here, the Outer World and the Inner World exist alongside each other. It seems like the wall of time is right in front of your eyes.

Darkness gradually swallows the world.

But listen, my friend, we cannot use kindness to survive the darkness. We need fire.

I finished "The First Order" an while ago and while I loved it, so much things were left unexplained.

Hope this story expands on that, and if our favorite couple are still alive here, since they're immortal.

Just caught up to raws, and it's surprisingly good for a webnovel so far. Minor spoilers involving setting and synopsis ahead; nothing you won't learn within the first 15 chapters or so.

Setting. A number of individuals satisfying a series of criteria suddenly find themselves transmigrated to a parallel world (neither displaced in space nor in time) that is more lawless, more technologically advanced and host to three separate advancement systems: (1) awakening superpowers, (2) genetic augmentation, and (3) everyone's favorite: cultivation. Transmigrators each displace an individual in the parallel... more>> world and assume their bodies and augmentations, if such exist. The landmass corresponding to China in the parallel world is contiguous with Japan and Korea, and is controlled by five corporations. Contrary to what another reviewer claims, nationalistic sentiment does come into play because three of the corporations are Chinese in origin, one is Japanese, and one is Korean, which serves as a significant driver of conflict in both worlds. While annoying, this nationalistic sentiment is infrequent enough to be bearable.

Summary. A youth with family problems and an eidetic memory becomes one such transmigrator, catches the eye of an expert cultivator, and begins his growth into a power in his own right. This relatively standard storyline is bolstered by the inclusion of intelligent characters, the exclusion of idiotic characters and confrontations, and the curious worldbuilding that combines futuristic sci-fi with cultivation. The youth's immense talent does not feel overwhelming because his growth correlates with the strength of his enemies, and because the training that he undertakes to develop this talent into a combat advantage is consistently and intentionally integrated into the narrative. The narrative's discussion of morality and interpersonal relationships is quite interesting.

Translation. I read the raws for this novel, so I will only comment on the quality of the translation via the translated title and description. 'Night's Nomenclature' is too literal a translation to be meaningful or substantive. The raw title is 夜的命名术, [night/darkness]-[of]-[naming/nomenclature, from the characters for 'life' and 'name/fame/renown']-[art/method/technique]. This 'night' is a metaphor for the parallel, lawless world, and I interpret this 'art of naming' as the power to direct events in this world. Ignoring these connotations, something like 'Naming the Night' would at least make more sense, but I would personally prefer something akin to 'He Who Commands the Night'.

Below is my translation for the novel's description.

Amidst a backdrop of neon blues and purples, underneath the steel latticework of sky, standing at the forefront of technology, lies a world that has overcome a scientific revolution, a world that serves as the interface between the real and the illusory, the biotic and the electronic, the past and the future.

The darkness is slowly encroaching upon us—but you must understand, my friend, we can't stand against the darkness with warmth and kindness. We need fire.

Personally, it sounds quite overblown, and there's a sentence in there that I omitted that makes no sense to me.

Recommendations. I will second the recommendation of 'High Energy QR Code' based on the similarity of the protagonists' personalities, strengths, and skills. Note that 'High Energy QR Code' has mild elements of M/M romance, whereas this present novel does not have any sign of romance as yet. <<less

Just want to mention that I'm writing this review for both this book and The First Order (completed the raws)

Spoiler for the timeline between the 2 books

Spoiler

This happens like 1000 years (more or less) after The First Order

[collapse]

As a reader of The First Order, this is a sequel, both novels are great. When I read them I always get a romantic feel (not the love kind, the other kind), especially the statement "Climb a mountain, watch the falling snow and chase a dream" with both books.

Excellent character development and world building, one of the best things the author is good at is building the mood. <<less

So far a pretty good story. I will be putting minor spoilers in my review for those of you wanting to avoid that. They are only for the first 18 chapters if not the first 5.

The MC is very calm and unphased. He comes from a broken home with both parents being two different extremes of negligent.

Although the MC is smart he is somehow naive dispite his eidetic memory. For example after being sent to prison he instinctively knows to avoid the "newby initiation" but later assumes that the other... more>> 9 or 11 newbies were beaten where the sun don't shine so as to avoid detection from the security drones and robots. He assumed as well that this was why they were walking funny...

Another, he assumed he was going to be put in a horrible situation or even die but the last thing he did wasn't to confess to a girl, have s*x (via prostitute or pickup), curse his mother or indulge himself. No he does something responsible...

The story hints at a dark setting but anytime its touched on the Author immediately pulls back and you get the standard going through the motion feel. There will be mu*der. Its already been shown. It just doesn't leave you with a sense of dread that you'd normally want.

The setting of this world is a year from now and the people of the world (selected few) get to transmigrate into a futuristic world with biotic, genetic augmentation (powers) and presumably a better way to get power that hasn't been explained yet (but its hinted to martial arts cultivation).

For those of you worried about nationalism there are other countries mentioned as early as where I caught up; that being said even with both America and Japan being mentioned there has yet to be anything negative. The author made it a point not to say anything overly patriotic or ridicule others. Sticking to the point of only mentioning certain events.

My personal opinion? I was drawn into the story when I saw the MC's family situation. I was very disappointed for him. It was a good sign that the Author knew how to draw in my emotions! I felt a little pissed at his step-father and actual father's responses. His mother's subsequent actions also pissed me off a lil even though I understood where she was coming from. The author knowing to hint back at this shows his skill level or at least potential.

Overall I like the world setup it's the pacing that's a little worrying for me. The MC may not get any starter advantages as it is now. Seems like a long con. <<less

Meh. An ok read at the beginning but quickly collapses under the weight of nonsensical, poor world-building. It's a slight improvement over the author's other dismal apocalyptic works ("The First Order", "Spare me Great Lord").

SUMMARY
A poor, struggling teenager Qing Chen possesses an exceptional photographic memory, which all of a sudden becomes an omnipotent power that enables him to do just about anything and master any skill almost instantly. Somehow because MC can remember and live with his sh*tty childhood, he has amazing willpower. Which is obviously a poor understanding... more>> of how photographic memory works.

MC comes across an opportunity to transmigrate back-and-forth to an apocalyptic Inner World (copying "48 Hours A Day" as mentioned by other reviewers). So he's given a chance to better himself while gaining newfound powers in the Inner World, all while maneuvering around various factions in both worlds.

COMMENTS

(1) Physics / Sci-Fi / World Building is complete nonsense
It's clearly a sci-fi setting, with gene and mechanical limb enhancements. Somehow it becomes nonsensical xuanhuan. Exactly the same problem as "World's Apocalypse Online" (2017).
The trouble with these self-defined sci-fi novels is authors insisting on meshing in nonsensical rules with no basis in physics/science, which completely spoils all chances of plausibility and immersion. Major spoilers.
Spoiler

- There are danger zones/mutants/objects/anomalies where entirely different set of universal laws apply.
In a danger zone, if your surname happens to be Wang, you die. Just because the zone was formed by a mutant human who had a grudge across being cuckolded. Ret*rded.
An anomaly object can be formed naturally or possessed by remnant super mutant powers. No idea why, it just is. Ret*rded.

- Danger zones can be formed by 1 or more super mutants (human or otherwise) that died. It doesn't matter if they were lower class (e.g. B). MC's teacher who is Class S states that even he would have trouble in them if he doesn't adhere to the rules. So author's power-scaling metrics are already completely out of whack.

- There's no investigation or mention of why transmigration even happens. At least till where I've read. Everyone just accepts this as a new trend and fact.

[collapse]

(2) The Inner World humans reactions to transmigrators makes little sense
So this is LITERALLY the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1978). You got random transmigrators that come over and possess the body of humans in the Inner World. No, the bodies' former owners didn't just happen to die and souls got swapped yada yada like typical CN xianxia. They are actually forcibly replaced.
You would think that would cause mass panic and a big upheaval, but Inner World humans react way too calmly to it, even though they could be possessed at the very next round.
Ridiculous.

(3) Author's constant attempts to inject humor fall flat, just like all his other novels
The author actually has a good grasp of character creations, personalities, and writing style. He JUST CANNOT WRITE HUMOR. Every single instance is pain to read, and it's just as apparent in this novel.
Spoiler

- MC's teacher, a bad-ass wise Class S behaves like a gossipy old man right after Chapter 100, just for author's perceived laughs. It's just awkward and s*upid.
- MC's classmate buddy has an ongoing theme of being an innocent dumb kid who is repeatedly swindled and ends up being a gigolo. There are lengthy chapters of him being a gigolo. Har har har that's so funny. Ugh.

[collapse]

I'm having way too much trouble getting past the nonsensical world-building. Might drop it soon. <<less

This is good. The personalities built from their environment are surprisingly realistic. I like how his lifestyle and situation are both implied and introduced. And I'm looking forward to c the actual plot. I can tell it'll be nicely structured.

About his parents. I don't feel like his mom seriously neglected him from where I'm at right now. She left him with an irresponsible gambler, which is all her child support feeds, and that's totally her fault. But I kinda forgive her. It just sucks that he doesn't feel like he... more>> can rely on her, but at the same time I feel like she didn't want to deal with any of the problems that came with her past. And I also feel like his inclination is realistic. <<less

I just started reading this and already feel addicted.

A mind blowing Novel with perfect writing style, characters and plot.

I feel like I finally found what I was searching for all this time, thank you author.

EDIT:

Actually I know it's a bit TOO perfect, but really interesting anyway, tought you feel the presence of the plot so not everything flows naturally if you want to read something entertaining, logical, not too slow nor too fast, not too heavy nor too light, I say give it a try 'couse it's worth it.

Big fan so far (up to chapter 81)

It's slow to develop but I actually feel development even without combat. I like the plotting so far, because the MC fails his plots a lot

Writing this review purely on the novel since I read the original Chinese and not the translation, don't know how well it's translated.

Pros:

  • Very enjoyable plot
  • Smart MC that acts rationally
  • Connects with the universe of The First Order pretty well but doesn't affect new readers who haven't read The First Order
  • The transmigration aspect of the novel is pretty well thought out
Cons:

  • Some character interactions can be a bit smoother, at some points it just felt like the author was trying to force two people to meet and become friends

Awesome novel. Read a lot of cultivation novels with the generic tropes. This one stands out and should be interesting for most readers that are already used to the generic tropes and want to try something new. It also helps that most characters are not 80 IQ and different people have different agendas...

This brought a fresh air into the CN webnovel scene to be honest.

Calm and collected MC who actually thinks before he acts, plus well-written world building that peak your curiousity, not a cheat or system in sight just pure determination with some help of his talent, no arrogant young masters but a pack of side characters with personality

a 10/10 so far

It still uses the trope of transmigration, but we don't have a blatant gary stu. And instead of one person randomly having the privilege and power of the gimmick, many people do. This turns the novel into a more traditional shonen story with many twists, battles, mysteries, and plot development, as opposed to the one note tr*sh we have normally have to wade through.

Chapter 322:

It's good but I just can't help but feel that it lacks compared to The First Order. I get really excited at the mention of their cameos and it was really fun at the beginning, maybe I need to read a little more. It just feels more hm, how to say this, typical? Like although it's not harem, there's a lot of girls interested in him left and right. The main character is interesting, I wish we knew more about him though.

Chapter 495:

It got a lot better, and... more>> now I'm looking forward to what other secrets will pop up! <<less

Dogsh*t story and character development. The quality of the story continuously falls of.

The premise is quite unique and interesting. It made me endure reading the 560 chapters of this tr*sh. While reading this I hoped that with a premise like that the story will improve at some point, but I was wrong. After the beginning of the story, the logic gets thrown out of the window. The relationships between the typical „Big families” in the world make no sense.

The power levels also spiral into a black hole of horse sh*t.... more>> The enemies and people around MC are way too strong (or grow way too strong and too fast than it was set at the beginning of the story.)

The motivations of the characters are s*upid and also make no sense.

The MC is being dragged around by the plot and the characters. The whole story is just conflicts, fighting, conflicts and fighting again.

MC just accepts everything that he is dragged into. It’s just frustrating seeing for the 69th time MC being put into ret*rded situation because some big or small character wants to joke around or develop him. (The way it happens just doesn’t make sense and is illogical which makes it infuriating.)

I wish I stopped reading this pile of sh*t at chapter 200 at most, so I wouldn’t be disappointed because of wasted potential. Waste of time and nerves. Dogsh*t story. 1/5 <<less

Good novel but I recommend to read author previous work first ("the first order") to get some context on the world story. There are character from previous works that olay active role on the plot.

I'm reading raws so I can't comment on translation.

Background:

  • MC is like machine, have crazy memory and computing ability.
  • There's outer and inner world. Outer world is like paparel modern earth. Inner world is the post apocalyptic world from author previous work "the first order" 1000 year later. MC and friends start from outer world as students.
  • People from outer world are being transmigrated to inner world by taking over body with same name and same face. Feels like online world transmigration novel at first.
  • All transmigration is done all at once and there's premeditated time for every session, ad while transmigrating, the opposite world time freezed
What I like:

  • Compared to other web novel the character here is more complex and not so one dimensional.
  • The setting is very unique, there are multiple way to power up not just cultivation or genetic enchantment.
  • It's power writing novel but not in a bad way. There are philosophical messages author ant to convey, but it's not executed in a cringe way.
  • Character actually smart. Other reviews said inner world people react with little sense when people around them get their body snatched by outer world people. This isn't true at all. The connection between 2 world is a deep topic on this novel. Later inner world people even counter attack and use this mechanisms to assassinate or even transmigrate themself to outer world.
  • If you read author previous work, this is actually much more enjoyable because you will appreciate the connection with the setting more.
What I don't like:

  • Racism. It's still barely acceptable for me in early part, but later part it gets really bad. The racisms itself don't even feels natural, like who the f use the term "asian monkey". I'm okay with racism that based on plot. But many here are so forced and ignorant.
  • There are many female introduced to MC that doesn't go anywhere. Right now MC focus on 2 of them, and at least there are sign of romance.
  • Its conflict after conflict. There's some calm period but it cound use more of them.
  • You can read this, but from my opinion you need to read "the first order" first before reading this to get full enjoyment.

If you like the authors previous works... there is a high chance that you would like this. But reading the prequel is actually not required but it is recommended to read it before reading this. It actually have similarities with the first order specially the latter half.

It is really fun to read. I love the MC's character. He looks calm and calculating but is kind inside. Someone who grew up in a dysfunctional family.

Although MC is smart, he other characters brains were not left out. Well except a few ones.... more>> Even s*upid ones has their uses.

From a smart highschool student, you would follow the MCs journey and watch him grow up into a leader. Laugh out loud with the authors humor. There is also romance but only as a subplot
What I didn't like
Spoiler

the last hundred chapters is kinda disappointing but maybe it is just me. Another point that may be a turn off is racism. I don't think the author is racist... but these are kinda common/acceptable when writing war/military novels. I kinda expected more of a war between inner world and outer worlds... but as usual it becomes chinese vs non chinese.

The author is brain damaged; he has no idea what he's writing about. A lot of explanations make no sense and the plot is full of holes.

Here the author describes super advanced nano tech that takes TEN minutes of striking just to ignite wood not to mention then they'd have to deal with a needle so hot it ignites wood. Sounds like the author has never heard of ferro rods or how to start a campfire in general.

"Sometimes, it would take more than an hour for the firewood to spark.... more>> After the sparks come out, one would still have to keep blowing air into it, and the smoke would often blind one’s eyes and blacken one’s face.

However, these six black needles could absorb the force from hammering them into the wood and continue to heat up directly in the center of the firewood. In just 10 minutes, firewood could be ignited." <<less

Its beautiful..

Here's my favourite quote of the novel

If winter will always pass, if spring will always come, then I wish that everyone in this world can choose a good partner, find a place of refuge, have dumplings on the Winter Solstice, sticky rice dumplings on Dragon Boat Festival, and mooncakes on Mid-Autumn Festival.

... more>> But if we can't meet again, then I wish for weapons to be put away, and horses to roam freely in the southern mountains.

I hope children can fly kites in the park, and old men can practice swords in the park.

and may you experience decades of wind and rain, yet return as a youth. <<less

It's very good but the novel is being rewritten, don't go into the raws or you may find the following negative aspects

Spoiler

In the first arcs, the devil stamp holder (Huan Yu) seems to be the arch nemesis of MC, doing terrible villainy stuff like kidnapping people and using them as mules to transport stuff back and forth from the inner world

He seems to be a great villain, plotting assasinations and having a constant tension with the MC because they were playing mouse and cat.

He has countless of resources and has a lot of killers under his command, unleashing battles where the stakes are high with the MC.

But once Huan Yu gets defeated and his seemingly right hand man Zhang San dies, there is nothing.

He is totally neutralized but he's still on the run.

Not only that, it was as if everyone concerned forgot what he did and expect the readers to laugh at him being silly.

You get comedy scenes with Huan Yu as if he wasn't a despicable and cruel criminal.

Kunlun, the force that is most similar to a peace keeping organization who helped MC to fight Huan Yu not only no longer investigate him, but accept him in the federation which wasn't supposed to accept evil doers and into the academy.

Reading it from a perspective of someone who got a really good and intense novel and went into the raws it's disappointing but understandable why it's being rewritten

I came into this novel with not the highest expectations because I expected it to be like any other novel I would drop soon. But WOW it’s been so long since I’ve been consistently interested in a novel. Usually in most novels I’ve read, I get interested in the beginning but I get bored overtime. So this was a very pleasant surprise.

I liked the side characters and I was surprised how involved they were in the plot. (Unlike in other novels where side characters are just used to praise the... more>> MC) I also really like the MC. He’s smart, coolheaded, but not an insane killing machine off the bat. Of course he’s a kid... not a normal one though.

I’m also surprised at how smart the enemies are?? Wow they use their brains to make plans. Shocker.

What I also liked was... the comedy. I actually laughed at a joke in a novel more than an actual novel meant for comedy. There was another review who said the comedy was bad and flat. But I guess different sense of humor? I loved it. Especially in the examples they put down.

Bonus for me, No romance! Not a fan of romance unless it’s the focus.

It’s an amazing novel and I hope it stays that way. I’ll be waiting for future updates! <<less
