Lu Lingxi died.

As a child born by his parents through precise genetic matching, for eighteen years of his life, he lived entirely for his brother, who had leukaemia. He was his brother’s shadow, a “medicine reserve bank” for his brother’s treatment needs.

Umbilical cord blood, stem cells, bone marrow… whenever his brother needed it, he would have no choice but to quietly lie on the operating table.

Until the last time, when his brother needed a kidney and he never came off the operating table.

When he opened his eyes again, Lu Lingxi became a teenager with the same name Lu Lingxi.

Freed from the shackles of his fate, he possesses the mysterious ability to communicate with plants.

Raising flowers, gardening and running a farm, Lu Lingxi begins a very different life!

YunYun, the translator, is here :) This is another story by Li Songru, the author of Rebirth: Different Way, but this one is not similar to Rebirth: Different Way in anything. It can be said it is completely opposite. It is not plot-oriented, much more about the process than the result. It has a lot of chapters and many things will happen but it is not very dramatic. Basically, the title describes it very well. It is slice of life, modern gardening/farming with a touch of romance.

The main character, Lu... more>> Lingxi, was very pitiful in his previous life. His parents had him as a donor for his sick brother and his whole life was dedicated to this purpose. Not only did he have to undergo various medical procedures for his brother, but he didn't even have a chance to live a normal life because his mother was afraid something would happen to him and her precious elder son would be left without a donor.

Fortunately (and it is indeed fortunately) the MC died during a surgery and was reborn in the body of a boy with the same name. It happens in the first chapter and after that his life completely changes.

He gets a mother who is quite a character but definitely loves him (unlike his mother in the previous life). He gets a friend. He gets freedom. And he gets a mysterious panel that allows him to see the needs of the plants nearby.

The exploration of the possibilities the panel gives the MC is quite a fascinating process. In starts from one plant and then spreads more and more, step by step. In my opinion, the pacing is very good. Every time something new happens or is revealed about the panel, it is very easy to understand and is memorable. And at the same time it is never boring.

I also like that even though the panel is "a golden finger", nothing happens without the MC's effort. He has to learn, to think and to do things physically. And he has to feel, because without his heart the panel would be worthless.

Later the things get quite a lot wilder, which is very enjoyable, and I also liked the environment protection angle very much. It had a very positive, inspiring feeling.

There is a lot of more goodness. Namely, Dahei. You'll love him when you meet him, and he was totally my favourite character there. Dahei is not the ML, by the way. The ML is... older, handsome, rich, decisive, a good businessman, obsessive, yandere... typical, in other words. At first I was not very inspired by him, especially in the first chapters, where he behaves a bit creepy stalking the MC. On the other hand, the ML is a habitual insomniac and when he realises he can sleep after meeting with the MC... I guess his obsession is quite excusable. And he is really, really good to the MC, and not in a condescending pampering way, but in a protective and respectful way.

It's really a feel-good story, positive, cosy and comfortable. I also learned a lot about plants; like, really a lot :) However, as another review mentioned, you shouldn't learn from this story what to feed to pets... but taking into account the circumstances, the pets there likely could eat lobsters and drink champagne and it wouldn't harm their health :) <<less

It’s a very peaceful story with an overall harmonious vibe, the MC and ML both have their complicated and sad backgrounds so there’s some drama there, but I feel like the focus of the story is in the slice of life/healing part of it.

There are some fantasy aspects to it which for me make it all the more enjoyable.

Also the MC is a lovable wholesome baby that must be protected, he has a very calming nature to him which attracts humans and animals alike, he’s very likeable and even I... more>> feel relaxed when reading about him, so I totally understand the ML’s feelings.

The side characters have also been interesting so far, my favorite is his mom, she is everything the MC needs and deserves.

The translation is also very good, in short I don’t have anything to complain about this novel lol.

I would totally recommend this for someone in need to relax or who’ll like to read a nice laidback story (with some sprinkles of drama). <<less

So far the translation is smooth, and the MC is such a sympathetic sweetie. You really want more for him. Looking forward to read a chapter every weekday! Good pick, Yun Yun translations!

Honestly a cute read. And for once I liked the subtle writing used to discribe their intimate times.. it wasnt just "crabs walked by" or some shit. It was written well and implyed a lot with just a few words not taking me out of it at all.

Spoiler

really enjoyed how the ecosystem was explained and the details to some flora the ended didn't feel sudden or forced but a nice gentle end. I felt so bad for our MC majority of the time tho with his past I'm just glad he met ML with dispite his mental hangups and wanting to constantly lock MC away, held back those urgs and instead for the most part created a healthy relationship between the two of them...a tiny bit too co dependant on each other for emotional stability and growth BUT nothing in the crazy lvls.

A really sweet and calming BL if there was one. The MC is really sweet because, in his previous life, he was basically a bird raised in a cage who didn't know the world. The ML on the other hand is ruthless and like the MC did not have a normal childhood. Their falling in love is very natural, of course, the ML is really proactive in chasing the MC without him realizing it. I loved the mother's character the most; she deserved the happiness she got. The message of... more>> the novel is also good and the ending is very satisfactory. <<less

I enjoyed this story very much. It was so healing. I wish this could happen in real life. I wanna see mother earth thriving again. I can't help but feel sad when it rains nowadays. When we were kids, we used to play in the rain and have fun but now the rain could even cause skin irritation. Before, I didn't care if rainwater splashed on my clothes. Now, I avoid going out even after rainfall bc of the rainwater accumulation filled with all kinds of nasty things on the... more>> streets. I do my part as much as I could but it's really insignificant compared to the damage inflicted to nature daily.

The only con in this story for me is that there were many things left unsettled/unclarified -- things I needed to be addressed such as ML's psychological/mental wellbeing. Although it was mentioned that people's overall health improved, I think his issue should have been addressed better. And I don't like that MC was kept in the dark from a lot of things. <<less

Great read! Kind of a mish-mash, but main theme is Slice of Life, ig? MC (Lu Lingxi) dies after being used as a lifelong donor for his elder brother. He gets a second chance at life though, and ends up waking up in the body of a 18yo boy with the same name who had died at the same time. When he wakes up, it's to see a mother that honestly cares for him and oh- a mysterious floating panel (a SYSTEM!) that allows him to scan the condition of... more>> plants and boosts his own gardening abilities. Another bonus of this snazzy golden finger is that it gives him a sort of "calming buff" that basically attracts and brings to the people and animals around him. Key among them is the ML (Yue Yan), who has deep psychological shadows that only the MC is able to bring him out of.

As mentioned, in terms of central theme, there is none? It's a mix of... wholesome family interactions, yandere courting, poor-to-rich with a gardening system, environmental propaganda, and so on LOLOL! It sounds bad, but I ended up loving it, even if some parts did drag a bit. The TL is great as well, though currently unfinished (the MTL is 78% readable if you're looking to brave it out) ! So, anyway! I highly recommend you give it a shot, especially if you're looking for a relatively chill rebirth story without the usual face-slapping, just good ol' cold revenge — where the satisfaction comes from living better than the other guy lololol

CHARACTERS: 8.5/10

Although the characters aren't super complex, there is a depth to them. Psychology isn't really the focus of the novel, so that's okay. It plays a role, but not a terribly big one.

Lu Lingxi (MC)

As someone who grew up under the shadow of someone else and was kept isolated from the world, the MC of the novel is rather simple. He's the innocent!Shou type, basically!

Yue Yan (MC)

The ML is highly self-aware that he's not a good guy and repeatedly depresses his Yandere instincts, though not entirely, to stay close to his little sunshine~ Put simply, he's the overbearing!Gong type.

ROMANCE: 7.5/10

This romance is all about dependence, I think. The MC depends on the ML because he's the first person to give him such genuine care. The ML depends on the MC because he awakens his feelings and brings light to his previously lonely existence. It's all quite meaningful, ig~ Not really my type of romance dynamic, but I found the initial development of the relationship very interesting.

SETTING: 7.5/10

The setting of the novel is modern day, though it's more like the late 2000s or early 2010s, I think. The author spends quite a bit of time on the plant aspect, and though the SYSTEM administrator (the MC's golden finger), doesn't actually feature much, it plays a big role in the plot. What does feature are the people. So the bulk of the worldbuilding is setting up the relationships between all the characters. Anyway, certainly not the most exciting setting, but it suited the tone of the novel.

PLOT: 8.5/10

This kind of poor-to-rich, System, rebirth, plot is exactly my kind of thing. It's definitely a bit messy, but the novel incorporates a lot of my favorite tropes and does a pretty good job developing the characters within the scope.

RATING: 4/5

If you enjoy slice of life stories, give it a try! Idk if you'll end up liking it, but I certainly did~ and I plan to come back to it again when the TL officially completes. <<less

I feel almost like the romance is incidental in this one. Really admire yunyun's dedication to what must have been a difficult translation, with many jargon concepts and terms. A lot of the themes and worldbuilding were things very close to my heart, so this made me smile full of hope. Author clearly made a labor of love, with many circumstances aligning well to give MC opportunities to enact change. Super environmentalist themes and niche plant talk. ML realizes that a psychologist can't help him if he continues to embroil... more>> himself in a family he hates, so he steps back and tries to live a fulfilling life with MC in which he can relax and pursue joy. The stepfather is fantastic. I'm really quite pleased. My only thing is, I wish the original father had a somewhat less miserable ending, some closure, because he did finally take the step to stand up to his wife and promise MC to go abroad and not be sacrificed anymore... just to be thwarted in his effort to help his second son live well by the nature of death. Dr Sun was a great throughline character between the lives, and both MC original and rebirth body are actually related so it makes sense he looks similar. <<less

Overall

A different farming story than what I usually read. There is more technical gardening information in the book which was refreshing. The theme is also not to get out of poverty but more or less to protect the environment and remove pollution. It was pretty chill.

... more>> Writing/Translation

The translation I read is from Xiao YunYun Translations. It was basically pretty good. I don't remember any errors and the flow was uninterrupted.

Pacing

The pacing was good. There weren't any rushed bits or slow bits. This is a slice-of-life novel about gardening and plants.

Plot

Our MC is reborn and discovers the system/panel that he can use to see the plants’ needs and status. So, in this new and free life, he explores life outside of a lonely mansion with friends, family and an interesting job (about plants) and along the way, gains a goal to improve the land, air and water quality around him. Along with a creepy stalker ML, who eventually calms down into a super doting boyfriend. Oh, and due to the evolution of the plants, this environment also encourages humans to evolve to be able to understand animals.

However, I did not like the extras about the policeman and his cat. The whole cat turning into a human and then becoming a boyfriend shenanigans is such a lame, cringy, predictable and cheap kind of trope. It's reaally not for me so I skipped almost all of it. The last extra is like an epilogue 4 years into the future.

Themes/What Story Tried to Achieve

It's a slice of life, chill novel. I think it did that pretty well. One of the points that didn't hit as much as it could for me was the system/gamification. I wish the author really ran with it and put in more day-to-day details into it. The level of detail I wanted is like in the Legendary Master’s Wife. Here, the detail was like one plant by one plant and they don't really come back up much.

The other thing is that I wish the author gave our MC a concrete goal to work for at the beginning and tied in all the subsequent actions with the goal more clearly. In the story, the MC just wants to get a job to help his mother and since he has the system for plants which he is also interested in, to get a job with plants in it. There were no bigger ambitions than that so this goal was basically already achieved at the beginning. After that, the MC just slowly and happily worked at the shop dealing with the plants and the people there. All the opportunities to make more money and investments later on just happened to come by and the ML is the one that implements them. Our MC just reacts to all the business opportunities to say he wants to make the environment better so the business opportunities will help to do that and the ML will make it happen. How to say, I wish the MC would combine the business and his love for plants together into one goal instead of him doing the plant side while the ML does the business side. Because the MC is kinda reactive instead of proactively reaching for something. All the good things kinda randomly happen instead of him working hard towards it.

But sigh, from the beginning, the MC’s life and personality is like that. Only seeing plants haha. So I understood why it didn't fit my perfect mould of a story.

Now for the romance, not my favourite or liking. I pretty much skimmed most of it because nope, not a fan of the uke and gong dynamic, it isn't realistic and it's hard for me to believe in so it's just there for me. It's a plot device to help move the story forward and that's it to me.

Characters

The MC is pretty likeable. He's naive at the beginning and very sheltered in a way, despite his old, sad life. But he explores and grows, gaining happiness and fulfilment. The ML is a bit annoying at the beginning but becomes a typical doting male lead later. Nothing much to say about him. The source of drama and revenge comes from his side of the plot with his messed up family.

The side characters are varied but their screen time is short and frequent so I don't feel that close to the more peripheral ones. The only one I feel close to is the mom. The friendships are all lighthearted and a bit like props to me. I don't really feel the weight of them but this might just be because this story is pretty lighthearted haha.

A sweet and satisfying slice of life/farming story (farming here actually substituted with gardening, but the idea is the same). There is also a system-like thing (panel) but it was not annoying because it was silent. The story is fast-paced and entertaining, with bits of interesting information stuffed here and there as well as a quite uplifting environment protection message. The arcs are very short (3-4 chapters) and not repetitive, so tge story is not boring to read.

The MC is pure and sweet but neither foolish nor weak. His family... more>> in the previous life was horrible; I seldom hate characters as much as I hated them. Fortunately, they got what they deserved, and I found their end very fitting. But don't expect any revenge plot; they brought their own end on themselves.

The ML is a cold, black-bellied guy who starts off a bit creepy as he falls in love with the MC from the first sight and his thoughts are quite possessive. Surprisingly, their relationship is very wholesome. The ML always treats the MC with respect and sincerity, never limiting his freedom and making a point of letting him do what the MC wants to do.

The animals have a lot of personality and are funny. I also liked the MC's mother (in this life) and the whole new extended family. <<less

This novel is a perfect one to relax to. The atmosphere is very calming and the characters themselves are very lovable. The MC is cute (naive, but very strong in his own way), the ML is a possessive wolfdog who manages to hide his fangs (he never crosses any lines so I'd call him yandere-lite), and the secondary couple is honestly the absolute best (MC's mom gets a second chance!). You may have to handwave away the animal's diets, but enjoy this as the peaceful fiction it's meant to be.... more>> You'll have a good time! The translation, as always, is also excellent. The translator posts a lot of links for your plant appreciating benefit and it makes you really want to turn your home into a jungle! <<less

This is a very warm story. There's really no dog blood drama, no crazy revenge schemes (although all the bad people definitely get what's coming to them), and no misunderstandings. Too many readers judge Yan Yue based on the first part of the story without giving him a chance to show his true personality. But even at the start he would literally rather die than do anything that would ever bring harm, emotional or physical, to Lu Lingxi. He devotes himself wholeheartedly to doing whatever it takes to make Lingxi... more>> happy. He never restricts him, never tries to tell him what to do, and even though he knows that Lingxi's plant ability could put him in danger, Yan Yue simply makes plans in the background to ensure Lingxi is safe and can do what he wants without risk. This really is a comforting story of healing and family. Granted, there are some elements you need to not think too hard about, but as long as you remember that this is an ideological fantasy story the strange elements won't bother you too much. 5/5

P.S. The translator YunYun is phenomenal. One of the few translators that puts a lot of effort into ensuring the story is readable, coherent, and clear. <<less

Another golden story!!! This is truly one of my favorite typical slice of life stories.

One of the reasons why this story has become my favorite slice of life is because even though the story itself is a slice of life genre, this story still has a complicated plot contained in it.

and even though there is a complicated plot in the story, the complicated plot itself does not beat the momentum of the genre that story have (slice of life), which ultimately makes the reader will not get bored quickly, even... more>> this story has main genre of slice of life (which mostly focuses on daily activities/daily routines...).

Last, there are some people who say this story is very light... in fact this story is not really light.

Reason why people say this story is light was because most of them are still slightly influenced by the author's previous story, which have a fairly intense plot.

For the main character itself, MC is innocent type while ML is black-bellied type (the character settings are actually standard) but it should be noted that even though ML is black-bellied, he never did anything bad to MC. <<less

I had to finish reading this MT buuuut it was so worth it and it wasn't even that much because by the time you finish reading the official translation you're already more than halfway through.

If you like slice of life BL/Yaoi that's slow paced with not a lot of drama and not a lot of conflict I highly recommend this story!!! There's a little bit of conflict but that gets quickly resolved every time so in general it's very calm to read.

By same author of Rebirth Different Way (grim atmosphere and serious themes but with a sweet couple, highly recommend)... this one is lighthearted and slowpaced, full of warmth and sunshine, with happy plants, smart dogs, evolved nature and kind humans.

Although this is a fantasy novel where MC host a system with a plant ability, author tried to weave in as much common sense as possible and manages to write about environmental issues without idealism and activism. Many things I particularly liked in this novel. I liked that ML smartly uses... more>> his connections and status to hide MC's ability behind well known researchers and government projects. I liked all the plant details and descriptions provided by both author and translator, as I am myself an avid gardener. I liked all the smart animals in this novel and wished I could also communicate with my pets. I will definitely re-read again in the future. <<less

By the time I read this, there were 91 translated chapters, and those chapters feels so short because of how interesting it is.

Of course, this is a bit of fantasy themed novel with the panels (in other novel its probably known as system), so dont expect the details in this novel to be realistic.
