In his previous life, Ji Sheng was a popular star who was framed and eventually died in disgrace.

Reborn as an 18th tier artist, Ji Sheng is determined to take revenge. In order to climb to the top of the world of fame and fortune, he does not hesitate to send himself to the bed of Xie Xuanming, his enemy in the previous life.

Xie Xuanming is handsome, rich and can be considered a perfect lover.

It’s a pity that there is a white moonlight in his heart.

On the first meeting after rebirth, Xie Xuanming squeezed Ji Sheng’s chin and narrowed his eyes.

Xie Xuanming: You look like him.

Ji Sheng: Hehe, I knew it in my previous life.

One day, Xie Xuanming was drunk and crazy, dragging Ji Sheng to visit the white moonlight’s grave.

Xie Xuanming hugged the tombstone tenderly: I knew him for several years, but he never loved me.

Ji Sheng: Hmm, no love, no love.

Xie Xuanming stroked the nameplate with the tips of his fingers: Obviously he approached me first and my heart was stirred, only to find that he was playing games.

Ji Sheng: Yeah, acting, acting.

Xie Xuanming: Come closer, let him see. It’s not like I am alone, it’s not like no one wants me.

Ji Sheng had no choice, stepped forward and froze.

Ji Sheng: Wait, isn’t this my grave?

The translator is here, so just a few words what this story is about :) Despite the title, if you actually want to read a story with the substitute trope, this one can hardly be considered the right one. Technically, the MC is a "substitute" but it is not the source of drama here. "Sending himself to bed" is also a big of exaggeration. And finally, the ML might look like a typical overbearing CEO movie emperor who treated the MC coldly while he was alive and regretted after he... more>> was dead... it is not like that either.

The author says she wanted to write "a story about two eccentric people in the entertainment industry who fall in love with each other" and that's really true. Both the MC and the ML are oddballs; they appear harsh and cynical at first but in reality they are quite endearing. The story is about their career in showbiz (bumpy), about their love (bumpy) and also about some mystery solving (who killed the MC in his first life and also killed the original owner of the body the MC occupies).

The story is quite slow burn. There is a lot of interaction between the MC and the ML but their relationship develop slowly. It is also not very plot-oriented but more like character-oriented. Or maybe it seems so to me because I kinda prefer very dynamic and intense stories. But I found the MC and the ML so incredibly charming in this one that I couldn't resist trying to translate it. Some additinal warnings: there is quite a lot of swearing. And there are flashbacks; I personally hate flashbacks but they were not anoying here.

In short, the story feels a bit niche for me. If you start reading it and feel you enjoy it, you'll probably like it. For me it was getting better and better as I kept reading; but it's not necessarily so for everyone. <<less

It is a sweet story full of some elusive charm. Frankly speaking, I usually come to BL for tropes. Substitute, white moonlight, yandere, etc. This story also promises them (especially with such a title :)) and they are present, but in the end you realize they are not the main focus of the story at all. What is? For me it was the MC and the ML and their relationship. The MC, Ji Sheng, is a guy you probably would really like to know in real life. You might be... more>> very lucky if you do... or very unlucky, if you are the ML, Xie Xuanming. Anyway, Ji Sheng has two passions in life. One is music - he is a drummer - and ah, I felt so nostalgic about my young years when reading about the underground music scene, lol. The other is friendship. He's really the kind of guy who will give his friends his last shirt. And, unlike in many other stories where friendship is forever, in this one Ji Sheng's altruism really ruins him.

With these two passions, what is left for the ML? Nothing in Ji Sheng's first life that ends in tragedy (well, the ML is also somewhat guilty, because... whoever told him to open his mouth and cause all the huge misunderstanding?) Anyway, Ji Sheng's first life ended really sad. He is a very positive guy so it doesn't too heartwrenching but when you see how he loses one thing after another in flashbacks... it's truly sad.

And the ML loses even more - he loses Ji Sheng. Now I want to say something about flashbacks here. The author certainly likes her flashbacks. There are many of them. I don't think anyone likes this kind of writing, well, at least I have never read a review that would say "wow, flashbacks really make the story better". But on the other hand, I don't think this story could work in any other way. It works on contrasts - between the cold, ruthless ML in the present and the fervent, generous young man he was years ago. Between the MC's friends and teammates in their young years when they shared everything - and what they become later. You need flashbacks to understand what Ji Sheng meant to Xie Xuanming (everything!) and how come they ended up like that in the first life.

One review says it was Ji Sheng's own fault... well, it kinda was. He is as good as gold as a friend. But when the ML tries to deviate from a friend, the problems start, and Ji Sheng doesn't even realize himself he also doesn't want to be treated as a friend.

Anyway, they have another chance when the MC is reborn in another body. I really loved how patient and drama-free the MC was with the ML once he figures out who the ML really loves (see summary!) In my opinion, the ML deserved some pampering after everything he's been through.

Anyway, it's a rare case when I liked both the MC and the ML almost equally much... they deserve to be happy together.

It's not a comedy but there are some funny moments in the story, especially in the first half. <<less

Let me start my review by saying thay the translator did a good job! It was neat, clear, and consistent with the updates. These reasons alone, are enough for me to rate this a five star.

Moving on to the novel, I can say that I have a love-hate relationship with the nove? First of all, I personally don't like the present-past-present-past format in terms of telling the story because it disrupts the rhythm of the plot. Having said that, I felt that majority of this novel's flashbacks could've been just... more>> written in few paragraphs instead of full chapters. The writing style was a major turn-off for me. But I guess, it's just ME.

I liked ML's character design. It's imperfect. You can clearly see his rough edges. But there were times where you'd feel that he's being too much, so I suggest you to be patient in dealing him HAHAHA. But I love his pettiness LOL.

I also liked MC's character design. His attitude towards different circumstances? I loved it. He's a strong person. A soft-hearted but definitely not s*upid. He spoils ML more than he thinks than he really does 😭

THERE'S ONE THING THAT I LIKED THE MOST ABOUT THIS NOVEL—ITS CONFLICT.

Spoiler

I LOVED THE CONFLICT OF THIS NOVEL. Authors often write novels where everything is perfect right? Like friends appearing in MC's early life period would stick until the end of the novel nd so on. But omg, in this one, MC'S friends/bandmates betrayed him. The reason I'm pointing this out was because through the flashbacks, you get to witness how they were once brother-in-arms and somehow you'll even grow attached to their youth. But gradually you'll see how that genuine friendship gets plagued by greed. I loved the betrayal and the back-stabbing that developed along the way. It was very realistic. It felt so fresh reading it. I guess it's one of the good points of the present-past-present-past format. You get to unfold the story bit by bit... though I didn't and cannot appreciate it that much haha

I marathon'd this novel over the last 36 hours, I couldn't put it down.

MC died tragically wronged, accused of many scandals and wakes up 7 months later in the body of someone else who also happens to be a drummer and assumed to have passed away. MC then spends his reborn life discovering the truth from web of lies his former band mates had created just to defame him for wealth and finally understanding who was true to him all along.

Despite what the description says above, there really isn't much... more>> white moonlight misunderstandings or using as substitute. In fact, the actual novel is a bit different from description. For one, the story doesn't really have such a humourous tone. What happened to Ji Sheng was like a horrible train wreck in slow motion. There are flashbacks to the past every few chapters and I would say that the story is roughly 65% flashbacks and 35% present setting. The reader gets to find out in full detail how Ji Sheng fell from grace. It's also pretty obvious to the reader that Ji Sheng is being set up but reading him walk into each trap every time and knowing what happened to him in the end already made the flashbacks pretty hard to read. The ones related to the band mates anyways, the ones related to the ML were bittersweet. To be honest, I wanted to strangle MC half the time because man, for someone who grew up "street smart" he sure does lack common sense when it comes to reading people.

The villains get their just desserts, but this novel is not a face slapping novel at all. The villains' punishment is summarized in a couple paragraphs. The main theme of the novel is really about MC finally understanding just how important ML is to him.

I took off one star because:

Spoiler
  1. Inconsistent timeline. From when the original timeline of when they were a poor, underground band to the point where MC, ML, etc were famous enough to occupy all headlines and a (poor) bandmate made enough money to open and promote a new entertainment agency with multiple artists was just apparently 5 years. But during the flashbacks we see ML was still an unknown star working in support roles and MC had just debuted in a produce101 style band and it was just 2 or 3 years after... so that would make it 2 years that ML was able to star in multiple movies and win 3 prestigious awards etc? Trying to understand all that broke my mind.
  2. Rebirth. ML, ex-bf, ex-bandmates, mom, apparently could tell it was MC rebirthed into a new body from just a couple of meetings and they accept that without any issues. NO ONE ASKS ANY QUESTIONS. And MC also does not bother to hide it afterwards. For a novel with a serious tone, it's hard to suspend disbelief that no one is surprised, scared, etc about this fact.
  3. The flashbacks. I understand they are crucial to the story but the back and forth was hard to read because they start out from no where. Sometimes it talks about a character going to sleep and then it dives right into a flashback. Or MC is looking at something that reminds him of something and boom, right into the flashback and each flashback is a few chapters. Like I said, 65% flashbacks at least.

This was actually such a good read!

I'm sure a lot of people might be apprehensive like me because of the 'substitute' in the title. For me, even if the MC was reborn in the body of substitute later (as stated in description), the idea that the ML might be sleeping with some substitute while claiming to be in true love with MC (as they do in most novels) was just so disgusting and so disrespectful to not only the MC but also the original substitute. And that's why I avoided... more>> reading it for a long time and even had the intention of not reading at all. But believe me guys, I'm so glad that I read it after confirming with someone because the ML never kept a substitute, he never slept with any substitute! (You can read all the details when reading the novel but I guarantee it! We all stan loyal and respectful guys!!!) His love for the MC was just so sincere, silent and giving that I had difficulty controlling my tears that threatened to fall.

The plot is really good with intertwining past and present with flasbacks, timed perfectly.I see a lot of people complaining about the flashbacks and honestly I loved them and also hated them. They added SO MUCH to the story! They made our characters from flat to 3D. Before I thought Xie Xuanming (ML) was just the typical cold ML, but after the flashbacks, I just can't describe to how much I adore him! His love for the MC is just so beautiful yet heavy that you can't help but shed tears.I had no opinions for the MC until I went through the flashbacks and seriously his backstory just plunges a knife in your heart! How much this guy had to suffer. Both MC and ML had to climb up from the rags and the world was not kind to them, the writing is so realistic and well done. Its just wow! From their meeting to each of their interactions, everything is just so bittersweet and I love them! But I also hate those flashbacks because I always knew that when they are coming, a lifetime of sadness for me is coming and each flasback left me mentally exhausted and crying. Really good job Author!

As the TL said that the author wanted to write a story of two eccentric oddballs falling in love in the entertainment industry and she did so beautifully! I just wanted more fluff and interactions in the present because it was still not enough to cover up the angst! Plus, even tho I never say it for any novel, I also agree that I wanted to see more face slapping!

Thank you to the TL for good translation quality and smooth updates!

All in all, it was a really good read! Its been really long since I binged a novel like this cause I was anxious to know more and more about what happened and happens.I advise everyone who's apprehensive because of substitute genre like me to just give it a try! 10/10 its worth every second you spend on it! <<less

If I were to be completely honest, I didn't really have any expectations for this story because I just picked it up casually. The result? I got hooked because MC and ML made such a charming pair in the flashbacks that even though I knew the result I was practically salivating at every flashback chapter and internally screeching at all the times MC ignored or rebuffed ML's attempts by accident. ML's kid self is genuinely so cute and had such good chemistry with MC, I was internally screaming with frustration... more>> every time MC showed favor to those who don't deserve it.

On the topic of Ji Sheng: he's kind but really naive, not in the "UwU shy bean baby" kinda way, but in the "he's too simple and straight forward" way. He tries to not doubt his companions, look for the good in people, ignore all slights or schemes and just focus on drumming/making music. Sadly thats just not how it goes in the entertainment industry, people can indeed change and he pays for it repeated. Even though it's his own fault for being so ignorant of the warnings, it genuinely hurts watching someone whose a kind soul be dragged into the mud. Like watching a moth fly into a flame, I genuinely felt heartbreak for Ji Sheng at the injustice he faced.

But there's quite a good chunk of the story that is just sorta handwaved away, the key one being why Ji Sheng was reborn in the first place. The reason is just kinda "idk but he can take revenge now so... just roll with it". Honestly I wished Ji Sheng didn't actually get reborn into someone else's body and was able to just wake up in his original body because it felt like the rebirth was useless. The reborn portions of the story were very dramatic but felt weaker in comparison to the flashback portions, which take up most of the story and build up. The only other complaint I had was that I wished the antagonists had a worse end :) damn them for taking advantage of Ji Sheng to the point he died. There was a lot of build up for revenge but I felt it was a bit lackluster or breezed over and I just wish there was more detail in the revenge.

In the end, I fell head over heels for the pairing (especially in the flashbacks, the interactions of kid ML and teenager MC were so damn cute I STILL can't get over them even though I read this story at least two weeks ago.) and the story was definitely really interesting as I was on the edge of my seat waiting for karma to catch up on the antagonists. There were definitely parts I didn't really feel anything about or like, and honestly I even preferred the flashback portions over the actual reborn plot line; but overall I had a really fun time reading this. <<less

It was really a good read.

    • Regrets of past and blessing of rebirth.
    • The cruelty of entertainment industry.
    • Struggle to artists
    • Public opinion.
    • Hypocrisy of people to munch on others kindness, loyalty.
    • Too much obsession (that villain girl)
The story was package which showed all of above those things.

This novel all about how you dream, you meet new people, you chase the dream with them,

you're achieving it, you're living the life more like you think you're living it. But you don't have any idea the people surrounding are with alternate motives.

Once lover, bandmates, friend betrayed you, took not only your dream but your life away.

(MC) You didn't get to find out that there was someone (ML) who loved you wholeheartedly, for whom you were his whole world. You saved him from death. You made him live, you gave him purpose. And he had to see you die.

But it's fiction you got a second chance of rebirth. A chance of love, chance of fulfilling your dream and took it and it was the best thing that happened to you.

I really don't want to talk about any toxic or negative traits. Because that's how it is. That's how some industry, social life, people's mind are. All of this happens.

So I just want to say that I loved their story, their love. I'm relieved that ML got his love. I'm happy that MC finally get to see the true face of people and he got the chance to live his dream and be with his love.

Even extras were satisfying.!!!

Definitely recommended!!!

The plot and the translation were good. There were some inconsistencies but the characters and the novel itself were engaging. I wish the author had written more face-slapping scenes but oh well. Anyway, the extras were very interesting and cute.

I also want to commend the translator/s. The quality of their translations are superb and the novels they translated were impressive.

A very sweet story, not without some shortcomings. I would've probably given the story itself 4 or 4.5 stars but I add a star for the translator's work.

There is a lot of things going in the story, the MC is reborn in a different body, he's trying to figure out who killed him in the previous life as well as the original owner of the body in this life. He's also making a career (he's a drummer). Then there's his relationship with the ML. And there are flashbacks - all... more>> that in the MC's previous life. It sounds complicated but it is really somewhat harmonious.

I remember not quite liking the MC and the ML in the first chapters. The MC seemed cynical and cold; the ML seemed cold and violent. It was interesting reading about them, but like... And then I didn't notice when, I fell in love with them. The appearances are deceitful, and the MC is a particularly unreliable narrator.

It's like... The MC: I'm experienced and world-weary, a substitute of two lifetimes, selling my body for resources is nothing for me. Also the MC: finally after 24 years of life - not a virg*n anymore! And that's just an example. In short, the main characters try to appear cooler, more confident, more cynical than they really are.

And that's why flashbacks are needed. Because in flashbacks they come as they are, sincere and very likeable, and their feelings for each other are true. Well, the ML's feelings for the MC at least, because the MC is oblivious the whole way in his previous life and for quite a long time in the new life.

By the way, I was actually quite shocked with one of the reviews that claims there is r*pe/abuse in the story. So much that for a while I wondered if the reviewer meant some other story. Was it about the s*x in the car? Honestly... this way soon we are going to call r*pe any s*x without a written and apostilled consent. Look at that: in Chapter 3 a bad guy tries to r*pe the MC. The MC's reaction: tries to kick the guy into next Friday. The MC's reaction after the s*x scene in question; to the ML: "Eat some jelly. We've slept twice, it's time to take responsibility."

As for the ML's yandere behavior, it is certainly there. Some things he does are unacceptable in the relationship, period. But are they described as something normal and cute? Not at all. And I think the point is how the MC deals with them. He neither drops the ML like a hot potato as soon as there are some problems, nor he takes the stance of a victim. Instead, he gently corrects the ML's behavior. The ML is not malicious, he is like a child who was abandoned (more than once) and is desperately afraid of being abandoned again. And the MC after his rebirth finally understands it and learns to give him a sense of security he needs, and also learns not to make "for your own good" decisions for the ML that cost too dearly for the both of them. <<less

This novel is different from the other novels of rebirth!

I love how candid and strong our MC is here. Initially I thought his rebirth personality was rather forced and awkward but after going through the flashbacks ~chap 30s, I realise actually, that's his real personality.
And boy it started to become more enjoyable.
There's none of those adolescent faceslapping which I really appreciate. (Reading at chapter 70) : Still very much engrossed. Flashbacks happening and this just shows how much the author had planned out from the start of... more>> this novel to link to the current present

Don't read this one is you hate flashbacks or get confused with them. Otherwise, it's a very pleasant and quite fresh novel. The freshness mostly comes from the MC. It looks like he hasn't got the memo that he the MC in a BL story. That's why he is preoccupied with his career, he is an awesome friend and he is even nice to his fans, but he is also a source of major suffering for the ML because he's clueless. Absolutely clueless that the relationship with the ML is... more>> possible. Despite this, the MC is adorable, and not in a boring way, there are some really funny moments as you watch his brain working.

The ML is a baby. Oh, he looks a typical handsome/rich/cold/overbearing whatever, but underneath he is insanely vulnerable, cute and petty. I loved the scenes when the MC coaxes him, very sweet. <<less

The story is written well. It started with the present and had some flashbacks in some scenario. I was engrossed reading it. It is short and can be finished in less than a day.

The MC has a bright personality, hard-headed and uses brawn before brain. He was later betrayed n died (bc of his s*upidity, serves him right since it is his choice despite ML's kindness to him). It's a good novel. My point 4.4

I like the story because it's about people chasing dreams. My favorite genre let's to say

interesting plot. But I feel the character is not explored enough. For example, the character Li Tian who is told is older but evil. The characters are very black and white, he makes use of the main character without any restrictions. In real life, a purely evil character like this was unrealistic. Moreover MC and he have been together for a long time in band.

Shen's character is like that... more>> too. He is perfect definition of a wolf in sheep's clothing. He take advantage of the MC, even pretend to be in relationships with him and love him while actually he took everything that belongs to the MC. The cunning character is only built to strengthen the romance plot of MC and ML.

Overall, this is an interesting novel. The romance between MC and ML is very touching. It's just that the ending of the story is not so clear. Is it all just a dream or does it exist in a parallel world. <<less

The novel is a bit all over the place. It starts something and then it goes nowhere, some things are just mentioned and never developed. But somehow I loved it. I guess the MC is my favourite kind, naive and strong. I respected him and was angry with him when he blindly walked into the trap, and I felt heartbroken for him as he was losing one thing after another, betrayed by those for whom he was ready to sacrifice everything. Unlike many stories where the ML is the source... more>> of the MC's suffering and the MC's friends support him, in this one, on the contrary, the ML tries to save the MC but the MC believes in friendship too much. And even more than that, the ML suffers because of the MC. Their past told in flashbacks is sweet, sad and nostalgic. Their present is not cloudless but from the very beginning you can feel they have a chance. Through many funny and tense events they do win their happiness.

One more thing, I feel the reviews stating there is r*pe/abuse are misleading. At least it never crossed my mind while I was reading. Really, it kind of makes me angry to think that someone can accuse the ML of that. Didn't he already suffer enough? <<less

I didn't really like the characters at first, they seemed a bit dramatic and as if their personalities were inconsistent. However, they both grew on me towards the end. I still think there's major inconsistencies in this novel - free translator points out the difficulty of pinning down the age of birthday of the MC. The author is a bit inconsistent in the details, and the flashback format just makes that tendency more extreme. Very nice. I have some complaints about the pacing because the author couldn't find the right balance between flashbacks and present day timeline. Often, something important happens and then a flashback is thrown in, disrupting the buildup and wasting what would've been a great opportunity to push things forward.

Thankfully, we have interesting dialogue and less expository chunks of text that painstakingly explain every single detail and thought processes. It made the story feel more alive.

This novel was surprisingly good. I just wanted to read something light without a heavy plot, but this novel unexpectedly wasn't as silly as the summary suggested. It was emotional and interesting.

From the beginning, it is clear that MC was betrayed, and because of that, he died. After his rebirth, he tries to investigate what happened in his past life. The plot is kind of old; we have a reborn MC and ML, who is in love with MC and helps him in his revenge. Yet the story is very... more>> good; the author is talented, and in their hands, an ordinary plot becomes a good story.

The story often switches between the past and present. Usually I don't like when there are two timelines, but it is written well and makes the story wholesome. Past life as well as the present were interesting. The past timeline is about young, broke people who are chasing their dreams. The author captured the youthful spirit of teenagers well. Yet despite the good times, you still feel sad because you know that everything will end badly.

Characters are written beautifully too. At first, MC seemed cunning and clever, but as the story develops, it becomes clear that he is too naive; he trusted and gave his all to the wrong people, and that's why he ended so badly. There were signs that people around him were awful and deceitful, but he ignored them. ML was really pitiful. In the first chapters, he looks like a mad dog, aggressive and paranoid; his mood changes too fast. But as you read, you begin to understand him. His life was too tragic. His mother was awful; he was raised as a copy of someone else. At some point, when he met MC, his life became bearable, but soon everything went wrong again. He was forced to watch how the person he loved the most was deceived, tortured, and killed . He has a lot of issues, but he is still likable.
There was a huge misunderstood. For readers, it was resolved quickly, but for MC and ML, it took several years and two life times. It was caused by inexperience and a young age. MC was too s*upid; he saw MC as a child and didn't pay attention to his feelings, and ML just panicked and blurted out some s*upid lie. That was one of the reasons they couldn't be together in the past.

All in all, the story is well written and worth reading. <<less

There is lot I actually want to say but I will try to keep it short.

To he honest I wasn't really optimistic about this story and picked it up casually but I had to say it's been long time since any characters has s**ked me into the story and made me a emotional mess.

MC and ML are both s*upid and crazy. Story it self isn't ground breaking or anything magnificent. Infact it's really simple and it also has few flaws but it has strange charm that it keeps readers invested... more>> in the story. I absolutely fell in love with main characters, specially ML (surprisingly) both brought such strong and intense feelings to the story that it made me want know more about them.

Basically this story tells the s*upid things both of the main characters did in their life, their regrets, their happy memories even very bitter memories and things they never knew about each other and how they ignored their problems and their own well being for others happiness and somehow how they actually had chance to fix things and truly and finally become a happy couple.

Both of them suffered a lot their life's, infact all the characters had suffered a lot in their early life and as the story tell us about their past and how things happens in MCs life you can see how people changes as time passes, be it good way or bad.

Any ways I strangly became really attached to MC and ML and got really emotional whenever they had scene together in past. It broke my heart for ML so much, he suffered a lot just like MC. That's why I was really happy with end and the extras too. I just wished there were more chapters that's all.

Please do give it a try to this beautiful and emotional novel, I'm pretty sure you guys will love it too. <<less
