Despicable, insane gong x paternal and indifferent, divorced shou. The story between a youth with a unique psychological disorder and an apathetic doctor.

He Yu returns to China to confess his feelings to his childhood friend, Xie Xie. But the brother of his childhood friend, Xie Qingcheng, who was his personal doctor during childhood, constantly stands in his way.

The passage of time seems to remind him why he hated him so much since he was a child, but… maybe he doesn’t hate him as much as he thinks.

I might be biased as Meatbun’s works always have a special, top tier place in my heart but this BAB definitely one of the best danmei novel that I ever read. I couldn’t stop talking about how good it is and I’ve no regret for all the sleepless night, crying hard until eyes swollen and angsts that makes me this close to punch the wall.

Compared to RanWan and XiMang, I can relate more with HeXie with all the psychological issue. Seeing that they able to grow after all the misunderstanding,... more>> conflict, life or death scene, everything falls beautifuly. I mean, its Meatbuns works after all. You really can count on her how to make you screaming, crying, throwing up while read this haha.

I really can’t wait to reread it back once the physical book is out. Same goes like 2HA, I desperately wanna forget everything and ride the roller coaster again just like the first time.

And for the smut scene... Meatbun.... You’re truly the our Lord and this is the best of the best ;] <<less

This is a gem. I like it as much I like as ErHa. As expected of Meatbun. I really like her angst. If you like ErHa, I'm absolutely sure that this is also your cup of tea.

Spoiler

HeYu's love is something that goes too far beyond imagination. I've never seen such a person before. He lowers himself to the bottom before his love, unworthy of everything, he tries his best to change himself, never ever willing to give up, & even when he's at his most desperate times, his instinct still tries to protect his only bridge to this world, Xie QingCheng. It's like there's a block in my heart. He has his own moral lines. Even when he really really wants to kill his love rival, he never take action actually. He controlled himself, holding tight himself all together so that his conscience wouldn't fade away, all himself alone. He's a lonely child. Just a child. HeYu, He's so cute sometimes, gentle, considerate. Of course, I don't say he's not violent. But, you must aware that he's suffering from mental disease (Mental Ebola). It's amazing that he endured so so much despite his illness. I won't tell about XQC. I want you've rather understand him on your own in the story. He also love his little demon so much so much that you would never have imagined it. Don't give up half way through this journey. It's a pity not to have a chance to see their very very DEEP LOVE through mountains of knives & sea of fire.

Just a friendly reminder: you better not scold the characters even if you find something offended. When you know why they have become like that, you won't even have the heart to scold.

  • tags: slow burn, love-hate relationship, age-gap, sci-fi, smut, non-con, dub-con, torture, drama, angst, crime
  • if you want to see the development of a strict and righteous retired psychiatrist now teacher with a crazy solitary arts student with a mental illness that makes him crave for blood falling in love together, then this is for you
  • we have Xie Qingcheng (32) who was He Yu's personal doctor, but for unknown reasons he leaves, now He Yu (19) hates him for abandoning him when he was a child and needed someone to care for him the most
  • he Yu is in love with Xie Xue and wants to confess to her, but things happen and that confession can't get through to the girl
  • instead, he Yu and xqc end up having a very intense and passionate relationship while being involved in a series of crimes that seem to be related to the death of xqc's parents 19 years ago
first of all, this was an amazing story with many moments that can make you cry, get angry, laugh or be happy with the characters, I think that's very impressive to achieve, so congratulations to meatbun

about the plot, there were twists that I didn't expect at all, and others that were slowly building up and I knew they were coming and that still had impact in me, what... more>> I mean is, the predictive factor is not always bad when you know how to do it, which is the case here

the characters grow up IMMENSELY, both of them were really flawed individuals and had me gripping my hair in frustration, but by the time the novel ends, they're completely different, they learn how to communicate with each other and stop being so self sacrificing (xqc) and so manipulative and toxic (he yu)

I wish meatbun could have included some little things in the second part of the story or the extras

Spoiler
  1. my heart will go on stopped appearing even before he yu "died" in the naval battle, I thought it'd make a return but it never did
  2. the jellyfish, we only learn that xqc stopped seeing them as his happiness after he yu "dies" but they don't show again if he healed that trauma and was able to look at jellyfish and find peace
  3. the little pokemon dragon that got broken and then was left in Mandela (I assume bc they never mention it again)
[collapse]

also I really loved the hints of the possibility to have m-preg
Spoiler

because xqc has a body that adapts to EVERYTHING, so if they wanted to put an uterus in him, he would've been able to get pregnant, also the gu blood is what saved his life thanks to he yu's obsession with getting him pregnant, thank you he yu

overall, I give this novel 5stars absolutely, I love it so much <<less

3 stars for the deep plot.

As with meatbun's novels (I should have expected it), there's a scum HY and cold XQC with a lot of friction. I was in it for the angst and plot and while it did deliver, the more I read the more I questioned myself.

Relationship thoughts: ... more>>
Spoiler

I actually can't see why they even get together? There's some love-hate banter in the beginning that was not bad but after chapter 30, it spirals downhill (no thanks to HY) and there's absolutely no chemistry between the leads. At chapter 100+, while HY is currently crazy over XQC, I can't see why XQC would EVER fall for him. Maybe something happens in the next chapter that I'm not reading. But I'm not seeing it. And I don't even hate the characters individually. Minus the atrocities HY does (hello multiple r*pe by chapter 100), he's a really tragic character and the people around him are just terrible to him (yes, even XQC). XQC is equally tragic and author do tend to write the shou's in a slightly more tragic, martyr fashion. So the leads are toxic to each other, no chemistry, and I cannot see why they even like each other.

[collapse]

As for side characters,
Spoiler

yeah I don't like XX. She just hits the wrong buttons in the scenes she are in (basically crying and complaining) even though she isn't doing anything remotely wrong. Also the one scene where she scolds HY "psychopath" right after the vid of XQC saying bad things about mental patients comes out just left a bad taste in my mouth. In fact up till chapter 100, CM was the most okay side character.

[collapse]

So overall, there's a long way left to the end in what may be a great redemption or path to HEA but I may stop here. The plot itself is intriguing but not enough to hook on. <<less

It's finally really completed. I've waited for the extras to be all done before writing my review.

This novel is Meatbun's first non ancient setting novel. The relationship was rocky and there was a lot of non-con/dub-con but the smut was really good. There's also some self-inflicted harm so as usual, take note of the TWs in Meatbun's novels.

In the modern society, there are rare cases of people having a special kind of psychological problem. They often do not survive for very long from having this illness. The MC and ML... more>> delved into investigating the root cause and cure for the illness, chasing after hidden plots and toss themselves into more trouble and danger as they go along.

. Xie Qingcheng is a straight guy (engineering guy type) and was married before. The constant rejection from him was really painful and I could feel the pain for He Yu as well (his love was just fiery like Charmander xD and it also burned himself). There's really very few sweet times between them and everything just spirals out of control. I cried quite a bit during reading because the angst is real.

As usual, there are a lot of dialogues that are very meaningful or heartbreaking (Meatbun is great with her lines). The plot twist was great and I did not expect how Meatbun managed to turn the whole story back to a HE after all that MC and ML went through. It was a great journey following along her daily updates and I'll recommend this to anyone who enjoys "forced love" and younger gong (13 years age difference <3). Btw the 20k smut in the extras were just amazing. <<less

👏👏👏 Translator Congeebrains...

Thank you so much.. I am not talking about bla bla other stuff here, I love it when I started to read it. About the plot, of course, they are progressing since the story is ongoing, overall, I like it, because it has an essence that made me stick to it. How people are suffering, I'm talking... more>> about the real suffering the writer always bring the emotions out of the readers. That's why I love " Meatbun" angst or not but what she writes is valuable. Not some kind of entertainment and sweet stuff that's her style, " like it or leave it" wonderful! Let's see what happens.. Thank you both the writer and the translation team. <<less

Oh, I don't even know where to begin with.

I have read Meatbun's novels but, they didn't make me cry this much.

This is not a novel about getting better, becoming a better person or achieving a healthy relationship. It's a "we are both sick, so we will make what we could with it. Particularly when the world seems to conspire to separate us."

... more>> Both main characters are broken people dealing with mental issues, so the results aren't going to be "sane, safe or consensual."

That being said.

He Yu (the gong) has a fictional mental illness, for that reason his family treated him with coldness since he was little. He met Xie Qingcheng when he was a kid, since he was the doctor that He Yu's father hired to help him to control this illness. After some years of treatment Xie Qingcheng leaves and then they met again when He Yu is 19 and he's 32. The thing is, at first, He Yu has a crush on Xie Xue (Xie Qingcheng's younger sister) who's a teacher in He Yu's college. But as the plot advances, he starts to develop feelings that he doesn't understand for Xie Qingcheng. Sadly, for him, Xie Qingcheng is straight (yeah, right) and he was even married once but his wife cheated on him because he was too cold and didn't know about romance. Which is partially right. Xie Qingcheng is a man of science, a teacher now, who's always busy studying and doing research. He's described as protective, paternal, old fashioned etc.

At some point things get out of control (He Yu's illness has a lot to do with it and because Xie Qingcheng tends to take the blame in silence so...) and they get into this sort of "forced relationship" (at first) that's not sane at all, but it's intense and it gets deeper and deeper with time.

It's a slow burn.

You should expect a lot of suspense, action, mystery and sort of sci-fi mixed in, but not much in the first 100 chapters.

It's also kinky. The gong is possessive, obsessive and not a good person at all. He would hurt and humiliate Xie Qingcheng and it would be terrible and Xie Qingcheng would quietly endure it (mostly because of guilt) but in the end, they love each other, in their madness, they would always choose each other. And they would risk their lives if they had to. I think that makes it so emotional, the way they have been lonely and suffering for years but they found the other and keep choosing the other person, above everything and everyone else.

You shouldn't be reading this if you expect a healthy or happy sort of story. If you have read 2ha is like a Taxian-Jun x Chu Fei in modern era. But like worse and with not way of fixing all the past mistakes and abuse. There are a few sweet chapters but be prepared to suffer. Is it worth it? Definitely, at the end I was sobbing and then smiling. Pure madness of a story. Meatbun never disappoints. <<less

This is my first review ever and it was technically the first novel I read by meatbun (so I was mentally prepared for erha beforehand).. anyways the plot and world building is good and all characters are well fleshed out... it may not be everyone's cup of tea so just check the tags beforehand and then dive into it but do read till the end:)

The story is well written and I love how actively engaging our main lead characters are especially towards the end of chapter 38. We also have a mysterious organisation doing some "cleaning". I'm looking forward to how the rest of the story unfolds. I will wait for the chapters since unfortunately I don't have money neither the means of buying the raws.

Was this book heartbreaking, infuriating, anxiety-inducing, and overall sad to read? Yes.

Were the characters incredibly frustrating with their constant misunderstandings and inability to be kind to each other unless they’re mentally incapacitated or literally at death’s door? Yes.

Should you also read it? Yes. Please suffer with me. The “probably five whole sentences” of them being nice to each other makes it worth it.

For those curious about whether it’s a happy ending:

These two were the reason I was getting sleepless nights trying to catch up reading LOL. It's such an interesting plot with the and there were also a lot of good twists, definitely should make sure to prepare yourself before meatbun starts handing out knives near the middle and end tho. You're basically kept guessing til the end.

I've seen a lot of people agree that He Yu's actions are inexcusable but to that I just wanna say, well, it's not for everybody, that's why there are novels that are pure... more>> fluff. So while it's only fictional, please remember to at least take breaks/not read it at all if you cannot handle the tags.

My main problem with this novel is also similar to my opinion on 2ha, and since they're the same author from different points in time I'd like to mention it a bit: sometimes meatbun uses plot twists just for the sake of plot twists, only shock factor and no room left to breathe. Meatbun definitely improved the writing since 2ha, but.. Yeah, plot twists.

Spoiler

I'm still having trouble understanding how a modern setting with the disease that both of them have turned into f-ing SCI-FI like robodogs? Robots as children? "Only us with the disease can see through the illusion? Come on. There was no build up or foreshadowing. I read this novel and reread it a while back and I still feel like I was slapped in the face. There's... really no need to "Upgrade" the level of twists, like 2ha as well it dives into some other unknown territory not talked about. (See: Shi Mei's identity, backstory, purpose, secret plan all spilled in the last few chapters) Meatbun's storytelling is the complete opposite show not tell, she doesn't give a clue until the very end and waits for an explosive ending.

[collapse]

Overall it's still a very enjoyable ride, just some personal icks ;;; <<less

As expected of Meatbun's novel, it never disappoints.

I have always only read ancient novels but this was the first modern day novel I decided to pick it up and no regrets, it was brilliant.

The story was beautifully done. There wasn't any usual cliche modern day situations where I could guess what is going to happen. Every time I try to outsmart Meatbun, wrecking my brain thinking this is what is going to happen next but in the end I just got played so hard with Meatbun's plot twists instead. It... more>> honestly gives me a refreshing experience where the story would take me on a journey that has so many twist and turns, and I am unable to anticipate what is going to happen next. <<less
