To Be A Virtuous Wife

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

As a virtuous wife, does it include tolerating his cousin, enduring his concubines, bearing his mother?

If you will not let me live freely, why would I let you live in satisfaction?

Did fate let women time-travel so they could learn the three morals and four virtues?

Rather than act like a coward and live, it would be better to live in satisfaction and die.

This is honestly one of the best chinese novels i've read. Truly a masterpiece that it made me want to read more. A very satisfying read and a very satisfying ending whether in regards to the protagonists or the antagonist. It even made me shed a tear or perhaps a bucket of them. Hehe

the story is realistic and somehow poetic that it made me blurt out various poems of my own while reading.

i'll never look at the world the same again.

it's that good. Totally worth reading.

I read a few chapter (10+). And find that Story is still ok. There is many interesting part of ancient lifestyle to read.

BUT the translation is not good while the sentence is fine, they left many word untranslated at all.

Like the position of wife and concubine, the name setting of courtyard and many many many others.

... more>> You will find almost 10-20+ word per chapter which you have to look at the bottom of chapter for (Long) explanation.

I think some can be easy to just translate as wife/concubine/xxx garden (courtyard) / "callname"> Madamn /"another callname" > Bigsis etc.

Seriously It is tiring to read half-translate + half honorific word. <<less

The synopsis doesn't do justice to the story itself. One can even say it's a bit misleading.

I also hesitated to read this even though I love other works from this translator since there was a mention of a harem. But there is actually very little component of that. The male and female leads are pretty monogamous for that era. This is also not a revenge story. It's more of a slice-of-life drama.

Best thing about this novel: The Main Character - a girl who time-traveled and ended up in the body... more>> of this wangfei. Her character is really unique. A modern woman who understands how things work in the world. Her character is what makes this novel really stands out among its kind.

Worst thing about this novel: The Male Lead - He's not bad. He's smart, good-looking, sensible, and loves the MC a lot. But his character is quite under-developed. I was waiting for him to break or react or just do something that shows his color, at least to the MC, but he never did. He gets boring after a while. I personally enjoy reading about the other prince whose life was turned upside down. His life was a lot more interesting than the male lead lol.

This is a slice-of-life story about life of a woman in an imperial family. Yeah, she has to deal with her mother-in-law and her husband's concubines and her own horrible family. But there's really no angst in it, no jealousy, no heartbreak. She dealt with everything like how she manages a company (she used to be a successful manager in previous life) which is quite funny but amazingly effective.

This novel is not a roller-coaster, it's more like floating in a calm river. Captivating but not exciting.

Because of its unique taste, I would have given it 5 stars, but then I cam across Eight Treasure Trousseau by the same author (I believe) which is essentially TBVW 2.0 but a whole lot better, I couldn't help feeling this one is lacking, especially for the male lead. <<less

I really like this story. There is only one thing that bothered me..

Spoiler

While I know that He Heng (ML) really loves Qing Ju (FL). There are a few occasions where he was implicated to be interested or fascinated about someone..

For example, Han Liangdi (One of He Heng's concubine), during the time where Qing Ju is pregnant, He Heng actually allowed Han to be with him and even allowed her to accompany him and even serenaded him [One of He Hengs's people even thought that the concubine was asking for favor {due to the choice of song}] He didnt show any objection to it and only panicked when he saw that Qing Ju (while pregnant) is actually looking at them at a distance... I must admit, I am very disappointed with him

Another was the Huakui (?) (Not sure if the spelling is correct) Yun Qing was her name? (I dont remember her anymore) When she was doing her scheme to gain a position in the fu (when she saw that being/acting virtuous wont make her advance in He Heng's heart) she actually recited about a poem during the time when He Heng was about to go to Qing Ju's place! At that time, the huakui was actually acting pitiful and knelt down (? Not sure if I remember correctly) He Heng was actually staring at her chest...

Last example was the Qin girl, I think it was Qin Bai Lu's (Wife of He Yuan, brother of He Heng, favored prince of the Emperor) relative. It happened during a banquet hosted by Qing Ju herself, at that time, if I remember correctly. He Heng actually took a second glance at her and was implied to be interested because the girl was dressed in a simple and elegant way, also the way of her speaking made him look at her.. but that interest waned when he saw the pearl-something-shoes that she wore and greatly reprimanded her..

Aish.. I cant help but feel saddened in Qing Ju's behalf.. she has many love rivals.. (The concubines, Wei Ran Shung {I dont know if her name is correct but this girl is also He Heng's cousin], the princess that visited the palace when He Heng ascended the throne.. even her sister admired her husband..)

While Qing Ju on the other hand.. He Heng didnt even need to shoo off some admirers even though He Yuan showed some signs that he likes her..

For example.. whenever he sees Qing Ju, he always thinks that he is pretty, when he complained to his mother about his wife, he said that he implied that he would be better off with someone like Qing Ju, when Qing Ju was pregnant, even without the approval of his very own Wang Fei, he sent her very abundant and good gifts.. And.. finally, during the epilogue made for He Yuan.. it was finally officially said that he indeed harbored feeling for her.. We found out during that chapter that he sent her paintings, got a wife and concubines that has some similar traits with the empress and even told his son during his death bed that he wanted (not really said, just told the son to get a box from the closet (?) and when he perishes, he wants it with him, when he finally passes away, his second wife opened the box and was shocked to see a painting of a woman standing (?) during the Plum Blossoms gathering.

I wish we have some sequel.. what is it was He Yuan instead? I am very interested to see what would've happened to the two of them..

Totally fell in love with this one though I hated the start of the story... I just loved the way the Female Lead Character handled He Heng. Just felt sad for the 3rd Prince, He Yuan. For him, if only he matured in his thinking and behavior earlier, his fate might not be what he obtained.

The characterization and the plot is well developed. The theme of the story totally resonates with the reader.

A story one would read repeatedly and not get tired. Just like I finished this novel twice in... more>> a row... just like that....

Totally 5 ⭐️... (somehow my rating didn't go thru) <<less

At first I had a few dissatisfactions with those generic shameless villains, but in favor of those epic, tear inducing epilogue, I'm more than willing to count this point out of my rating. Was an amazing and unusual novel with an unique style. Though I tend to dislike the notion of a modern person taking over a weak unremarkable body of someone in the past, the MC is too unique and I chose to overlook that fact as well. The MC is cautious and has a rather interesting bend of... more>> mind. The ML although not the best one I've seen (I like rebirth of the malicious empress' male lead best) but still really likeable.

And personally speaking I probably like the character development of He Yuan the best. Unruly and overbearing at first but the way he later learns from his mistake and matures and also his final ending which was peaceful yet somewhat tragic was enough to make me cry. Overall I find the ending of this novel the most impactful one among the ones I've read so far. A lovely work. <<less

This is my first time reading a slife of life novel and was really reluctant to try it out. But to my surprise although the summary was a bit misleading that made one lose interest such as myself, fast; I was satisfied with it. It didn't occur to me that I can be so eager to stay up and read late at night. At the beginning I was really irritated by so many pinyin words and such by the translator but as they say, you have to learn. There's also... more>> a glossary that they made which helped a lot.

Now lets talk about the novel. Here we have the usual transmigration story of a young girl who is as gentle and timid girl who tolerated bullying for so long. Living a life full of hardships and later died in a fu as an unfavored wang fei due to being poisoned to death by a girl who had the favor of the wangye who still has not fallen for QQJ. Later when the poor MC died and was taken over by the QQJ of another era she didn't directly went and go f*ck you, go to hell, revenge, kills everyone, goes on a journey while punishing everyone.

But instead started slow and changed her clothing to a more extravagant and eye catching with the aura of a dignified wang fei that caught the eye of the man she was married. Since both of them has never known love they started the act of a loving couple which turns to a legendary once in a thousand years love in their era. Which cause many jealousy and transpiracies of the people around them.

QQJ, takes advantage of the situations all the time and returns eye for an eye and never forgets to return kindness with kindeness. She is a woman who is seductive, lazy, unpredictable, smart, and loyal. She harbors grudge well and has a sharp tongue that kills people without blood. Due to the inexperience of being in love the characters are smooth sailing and is very supportive of each other but the main thing was that the trust they have to each other and the feelings they felt are things they cannot understand. It later led them to unconsciously seek the other person and get to know them more as the feelings deepen overtime with some spice and fluffy moments.

One thing I find really satisfying and really something that is rare and one of a kind is that QQJ, as a woman knows her boundaries and never overstep it. The enemies that tries to covet the main lead she teaches them a lesson. Not the lesson where it gets all unsightly and nasty but a life lesson they ought to carry on for their entire life. She is fair to those who never hinders her path and lives a fulfilling life through the end.

One of the funny thing is that all those servants. Yes the servants. Those loyal and hilarious servants that are so loyal till death they part. Would always be so protective when it gets to their masters. They control they emotions well and become a statue whenever the two couples flirt and pretend to be blind and have a the wood log face saying I-dont- know-anything-never-heard-anything which cracks me up all the time.

Theres also the side characters who played their duties well and got a satisying ending as well which made me happy. Although they didn't get the love of the wang ye or emperor they were married to, they know to not cross the mc's bottom line and was content to live in harmony and peace. I really recommend this novel to those who are hesitating to read it. ^^ <<less

From start to finish, one of the most enjoyable novels I've read that you'd find on this site. If I were to describe it in one sentence it'd be: a realistic take on the unrealistic concept of true love. The premise is ironic and self-contradictory but the execution is near flawless so it works. Actually, not just the main premise but the whole nature of the novel is very self-contradictory yet somehow seemingly realistic. For example, there is an easy-going feeling to the novel where the female lead mainly wants... more>> a comfortable life and thus never really actively seeks revenge, yet all the characters who have acted against her and didn't repent end up more miserable than the villains of most revenge novels. It is not like the MC is cruel and lacks compassion, quite the opposite, however, she knows that sometimes you have to be firm. It is very refreshing as usually you get either one extreme or the other in these types of novels. Another strength of the novel is that both main leads are not perfect and each have their flaws. In fact they are aware of their limitations and stick to their strengths. In general you have a good range of characters whose actions stay true to themselves throughout the novel (another refreshing quality). The level of the work is at a steadily high level throughout. Political intrigue is not overly complex (since it is not the main idea of the novel) and yet doesn't insult your intelligence, a very good balance.
Spoiler

If I had to find one flaw of the work, it is that the relationship of the 2 main leads never really encounters any truly difficult challenges which would require some sort of sacrifice on the part of either one. It gives it a bit of a fairy tale feel though I understand that the author never meant for this novel to be anything overly serious.

For example, she gives birth to a healthy male heir right off the bat. Imagine the pressure He Heng would have to face to have children with other wives if she is not able to produce an heir for even a few years! I doubt he would be able to stay completely faithful to her in such a case.

[collapse]

Anyway, I think of myself as one who is highly critical so to get 5 stars for an entire completed work is quite the feat. <<less

I liked the heroine very much in that she was realistic in her feelings towards the prince. It's rare that you see someone who doesn't get infatuated so easily and even rarer that you see the male lead more in love than the female MC. I thought this change was refreshing although I still would have liked them to say "I love you" at least once, even though they did say that actions speak louder than words. Some things that just didn't really make sense was how she never questioned... more>> why she was reincarnated or her circumstances before she woke up in her new body. Like, did she die and this is a second chance? Or did she just go to sleep one day and woke up in this new body? Also, she seems lo literally know everything, from how to deal with unruly servants to scheming concubines and annoying mother in laws. Everything just seems to go fine for her because she somehow knows the way to deal with everything. I personally would have liked to see her struggle to fit in and deal with people more, only because I felt that she was too much of a mary sue which made it harder to sympathies with her. But overall I really enjoyed this novel I would definitely recommend. <<less

It's a nice and wonderful story.

The Female lead wasn't OP or anything and handled the situation in a somehow realistic way. It's just it's somehow depressing yet it's the truth as it felt like until the end there was only that deep trust within them, perhaps the male lead shown to have been fallen in love but the female's feeling for him even now is still unknown. And they even somehow silently accept that feeling's always change and just as love hence they might not know for their next lifetime,... more>> but in that lifetime they'll be together -which is why I like the female lead's character, even at the end she still knows her place and knows there's limit. <<less

This was a beautiful story.

I can't quite describe how I felt.

This story was an attempt to realistically depict the life of a reincarnated modern women in a historical setting. There is no nonsense wugong and overpowered female main characters in this novel.

You'll fall in love with the female protagonist in this sweet slice of life historical romance. She is realistic, witty, and charming. Please don't be turned off by the summary and give it a chance.

To Be a Virtuous Wife is one of the top stories of the "I woke up in ancient China as a disadvantaged noblewoman" type, alongside the Mistaken Marriage Match series. The story has a sense of ease and flow made from a well-thought out progression and keen editing. The MC's maturity and self-confidence make her truly virtuous; unlike most MCs in this genre, she isn't embroiled in some terrible life-or-death intrigue, and thus lives a normal life. She makes everything seem effortless, though the reader can obviously tell that a... more>> lesser woman would crumble in her position (as had the original owner of her body). The MC's careful handling of every situation defuses most potential drama sites before they can start, making for a beautiful slice of life void of the hair-tearing and contrived events that you come to expect in these kinds of stories.

When I first started reading, I dropped the story after spending a chapter with the male lead because he felt absolutely, dreadfully boring. I'm extremely glad that I picked this back up, though - the male lead's personality only shows later, when the MC actually spends time with him. What I like most about the male lead is his subtle intelligence and unstated court manipulations, as well as how his love for the MC develops as he learns her personality. I think this kind of romance is much more touching than the typical 'fell in love because she's pretty and maybe did some weird things' which I had come to expect. All in all, this story is a must if you enjoy romance, Ancient China, and/or transmigration. It's also an excellent pick if you're looking for an intelligent and capable female lead. <<less

The female lead is the most outstanding robot female lead ever (or can I say plot armor usually used on xianxia novel?). She's perfect in every direction, she's pretty and her husband is very much infatuated with her, she can manage her household well, her interpersonal relationship is always correct. She befriend will correct people, and demean the useless one. Her life is smooth sailing and she do anything that make her happy.
Even I quite enjoy it, I can't help thinking about how the apricot can she know about... more>> formality and protocol used in the ancient time when her family neglect her that badly and she, herself come from modern world?

So I can say that this series is a slice of life novel using Chinese custom. <<less

There are some novels you should read if you're into this ancient Chinese romance dramas. This is one of them. A lot of the other reviews go into more detail, but for me the highlight was the strength the FL had. She was intelligent and she used it to the fullest to live the life she wanted.

The author, Butterfly's Shadow Beneath the Moon, is well known for a good reason and you can't go wrong with this.

This novel is pretty good with very little in the way of hiccups for the main couple. While there are events that happen (such as mu*der in the ML's harem), none of them shakes the relationship between the pair.

The FL is a transmigrator but this has very little consequence to the story. Like a few other Ancient Chinese stories, it is only done to explain her different mentality and how she handles the women in the harem around her. However, this difference is what interests the ML because she is... more>> both open (to him) and has the mentality of a Manager (she literally treats the harem like it's a business and that the concubines are the workers). While she does have a few moments of jealousy, she is very accepting of the reality she's in and becomes rather satisfied in her life when the ML chooses to focus solely on her.

The ML is one of four princes. He is not the favoured or the oldest but the most crafty. All his life, he has arranged things so that he doesn't showcase how capable he is. To the point that the two main contenders for the throne compete with each other and ignore him. He is willing to do what he needs to succeed because he understands that it would not be good for the Dynasty if the favoured prince took the throne. From the beginning, he has stated that he will not favour a concubine over his wife. Because of this, he acts like he is in love with her but then falls for her and has no other woman in his eyes from beginning to end.

Spoiler

There are several women who scheme to climb into his bed but it always fails. He simply has zero interest in the rest of the women in the harem or in adding women to it. This even leads to one concubine mu*dering another and trying to frame the MC as well as a princess from another country to volunteer herself to be one of his concubines.

[collapse]

The scheming against the couple doesn't really start until the ML becomes the Emperor. Previous to that, it's just the MC dealing with the other women in the harem, the crap family the original host had and the jealousy from the wife of another prince.

Spoiler

The wife of the other prince was torn between blaming her prince husband and the MC for the fact that her life was terrible. She had very little capability for handling her husband's harem or to draw her husband's attention. It doesn't help that her husband was very arrogant and pretty much a terrible person. The prince also takes in the MC's half-sister as one of his concubines for the sole purpose of using her in place of the MC (yuuuuup). The prince's wife is a minor antagonist who hangs around until the end of the novel with spectacular results.

[collapse]

While the story is fairly good, it just seems like most of the main events happened in the background or were solved by someone other than the MC. At times it almost felt like she was an observer of the events and not really a participant or that the MC was forgotten until everything else had been dealt with.

The translator also left a lot of untranslated words in. While this does add a lot of flavour, it does get to be a bit confusing when a lot of words are used at once or later when people's titles change. <<less

Pretty ok read.

Had a hard time the first few chapter because of the translation. The translator decided to keep some words in their original language maybe to make the reading of an ancient chinese setting more immersive? But some were unnecessary such as xiandi, guifei, muhou... you can totally change those to something more colloquial in my opinion. The first chapters had too many footnotes but it gets better after the 3rd chapter and translator did a nice job overall.

Now story. Didn't enjoy the lack of description of the feelings... more>> between the MC and ML. Maybe it was on purpose that the author wanted to show their love with the trust, respect and how infatuated ML seemed each time he saw the MC. So you had to kinda guess the thoughts of both with their actions, reactions and what the author implied.

Also they talk with pretense and protocol so you have to read between lines too lol like "i fell for you after we married" means "i don't love you and I know you don't love me but I'm loyal and I just want to live a good life whether is with or without you" or something along those lines.

So not the type of writing I like but I appreciate the dynamic and it wasn't the spoon feeding type of reading so that's a nice change.

The plot is not complicated. You have the classic arrogant antogonists that are too unreasonable and hateful. Both MC and ML have intelligent servants that just adds to the easy plot. And all the problems come from other people's mistakes or scheming while the main couple keeps on winning.

It was interesting how the author showed the mentality of the imperial era and how bad it was for the woman there.

It wasn't a boring reading but I don't think I'll reread it <<less

Extremely entertaining! I loved it. Ultimate imperial family conflict drama in a nutshell.

This one focuses a lot on the events that happen in the struggle between the family, and pretty easy to understand as well. Both the FL and ML are extremely interesting, and it is a pretty realistic relationship up to the point where he decides he will not care about the other women in his harem. There are a lot interesting side characters as well.

FL is a smart person with top people skills, but it is funny how... more>> she decides to play the fool till the end. No matter what happens, it is the Wangye's decision not hers, so she cannot be blamed. This is basically the principle she holds while manoeuvring through the conflict filled imperial family. In a way she is a 'virtuous wife' but also has 'unrestrained spirit'. She uses her people skills to gain the favour of those around her, serve husband and all but leaves the rest all up to fate. She never actually feels sorry for herself at any time, and is willing to do things to please people in order to gain freedom to do whatever she wants to. I don't see that resentment of being restricted by rules at any point or resentment towards to ancient characters, she just understands and accepts them as screwed as they are. I got vibes of 70 year old wise woman sometimes. Basically what I call, 'never let yourself be wronged regardless of how many rules are enforced on you'. I find her lack of trust in ML quite realistic, and even I doubted He Hong to near the end after reading 'The Job of an Imperial Concubine' and similar works.

ML is no stiff faced, emotionless child either. He is the smartest out of 4 brothers, slyest and best in playing people with their own tricks. What I found the most surprising was the commitment he had towards QQJ, which is quite different from what you would expect of someone his status and given that he prioritises the country as compared to his father and brothers. Quite not realistic for a man of his position in his time to have such an attitude, to the point of monogamy at least. He is surprisingly adorable in some ways as well.

My favourite character is Jing Guifei. She has such a pivotal role in this story, where without her He Heng had basically no chance of becoming emperor. She is attributed the right kind of respect she deserves as well as awe for her powerful moves. I love how adorable the relationship between her and her erxifu is. I want a mother-in-law like that. In this aspect you also need to applaud An Guipin who barely had any resistance towards her erxifu, and treated her really well. Jing An Grand Princess is also an adorable person, but I felt she maintained a very mutual benefit relationship as compared to Jing Guifei. I particularly love the part where FL and Princess have a role-play banter during a party.

Overall, I like the rich engaging plot and equally engaging characters. I like how the focus is not on the characters but the events in the story, so even though I don't have much takeaway on the characters and their development, I loved it. I do believe though, transmigration was completely unnecessary, it could have been rebirth or simply change in character due to near death experience and it would work just fine. I really hope writers don't use that trope if it is not doing anything for the plot. Also, it wasn't the most complicated mind-boggling schemes ever, it was fairly simple and the antagonists were not that smart, and it was an easy win for the main characters, so I did feel that it didn't give me enough of an mental exercise. It was a full circle for all the characters, and everyone got their endings which was satisfying. It was wholesome that no one was exploiting or using anyone in this story. <<less

Props for a ML who’s not a cold block of ice, is fun and who has character growth.
FL is a bit of mixed bag but not one I would say is completely cold or bland as some have stated. I think sometimes readers forget the era and culture these novels belong to and read with modern expectations that would have the FL beheaded or have her completely out of favour.

Although the author does fall into the trap once again, of trying to show that a FL is strong when... more>> she keeps on denying what she feels and receives from the ML. It doesn’t make you strong to be closed off and fake to the person you clearly love and who clearly loves you. And if the author wants us to believe that the FL is okay with living in the moment and not afraid of death, then show them to actually accept their own feelings.

Personally I’m also always left a little discontent when thinking about the OG souls, of these bodies that have been taken over and no one knowing they’ve died or having any respect paid to them by the ones inhabiting them. Theres also the issues of the author evoking sympathy for certain characters the way they did in the epilogue, that is frustrating to read because A, the love makes no sense and B, now I want more but all I have is this one emotionally tragic epilogue.

Anyway, good translation, fun banter between the leads and FL that’s thankfully not intimacy shy. Read this one and skip eight treasures. <<less
