This is a nice story if you like a rags to riches story with few setbacks and a calm rational FL. I enjoyed reading it as a light hearted read.
No Mary Sueness or protag halo but it is quite smooth sailing for the FL with some issues that are resolved quickly.
No faceslapping which I disliked since I do enjoy smart faceslapping. I wanted her to screw over ML family but it was resolved quickly after some chapters. The governor who bullied them too had an annoying family that did not have any faceslapping.
Would have enjoyed a more extensive story but otherwise a chill read.

I like the FL but ghad the ML was so weak willed. If I were the FL, I can stay if he's cripple or ugly but if he can't stand for me I'll leave.

I'd rate it 4.5 out 5 if I could.
The ending took the 0.5 out of 5. The ending before extras was really abrupt but the extras helped recover it a bit. I still feel like the extra chapter count should have been at least double the amount it is in order to reduce the light speed pacing. But other than that a nice read.

It’s cute slice of life story with FL without any golden fingers and no incredible cooking skills. Both FL and ML are very ordinary but still manage to grow rich. I liked how the FL was resourceful. The male lead was completely devoted to the FL without the domineering president vibe. I like this kind of ML, no s*upid pride but still manage to appear manly. Also no 3rd party in the story which I really liked. Refreshing compared to other transmigrating in ancient China type of novel.

I liked it a lot! It's a soft and fluffy story, very mellow and slow, nothing bad happens. A good palate-cleanser after reading lots of drama and fast-paced and political intrigue.

This story is about a beautician who transmigrated to ancient time and her struggle to earn money for her disabled husband. The family drama gets solves in early chapters and no conflicts are dragged for long. It’s story mainly about MC and her journey in making money.

Absolutely love reading this charming & heartwarming story of love & family relationships.

Li Mo transmigrated to a poor ancient life and married a disabled man with a son. However, nothing deterred her to make their life better.

Li Mo made the best out of this life ~ her amazing relationship & daily interactions with Song Da Shan & Xiao Bao & later with Xiao Fu'er; and also with the people around her (her sis-in-law & family; neighbors; friends; workers).

Li Mo is sweet and grateful to those who are good to her... more>> and unforgiving to those who wrong her family.

The moral of the story is that if you do good to others, good karma will continue to shine on you. On the other hand, if you only think to do bad things to others, you'll always be unlucky in this life as bad karma won't leave you. <<less

I wanna cry because the story is so good I want more 😭. I kinda regret reading novels that has small amount of chapters 🥲. If you like a slow pacing, slice of life, child care then this is for you. I love this type of stories especially the child care once 👌

The story is so good well written and kinda realistic. The MC is a beautician in her last life, in this current life she was sold and the ML coincidentally met the host and brought her. The ML... more>> is a single father and dirt poor, the MC decided to work hard for them to live comfortably. As the former senior beautician she she shows everyone how good her makeup techniques are.

My favorite character is the ML, he wasn't described as a handsome man but was described as dark, limp and thin from the first chapters. What I like about him is that he is attentive, and caring to the MC. He had never treat the MC poorly, like where can I find a man like the ML 😭😭😭😭😭. He would always wash her feet and
Spoiler

when the MC was kidnapped even though he had nothing he tried his best to save the MC 😭😭😭

BEST BOY SONG DASHAN 😭 I'm so emotional writing this lmao.

Spoiler

my favorite part was when the MC was pregnant he had hired 2 best midwife from the city 10 days in advance for the MC. They had nothing to do because the ML was very attentive towards the MC and also when the MC was in pain during delivery he said that the MC doesn't need to give birth again, since she suffered during delivery 😭

Honestly he is the best ML. 😭 I also love the 6 extra chapters. I thank the author that I can sleep in peace but still I'm gonna miss the ML 🤭. <<less

3.5 "Simple & Sweet" Stars

It was not too long and sweet! The dog blood drama with the ML's family is pretty minimal and disappears after the first half. I would say the story is segmented into:

  • First half: getting rid of ML's ridiculous family, FL starting to get comfortable and opening up to ML
  • Second half: FL implementing more business ideas and gaining success for her family
  • Side stories: Cute tidbits on their children
Overall, I would call it a cross between Living with a Disabled Man in the 70's (where the ML is... more>> poor and has a leg injury, and the FL transmigrates into his life for the better) x Ancient Foodie Survival Guide (where the FL uses her previous life's skill to create a successful business and helps other women along the way). Peasant Makeup Artist gave a general sweet, fluffy vibe with a FL that has a good head on her shoulder, a doting ML, and their friends/family.

TRANSLATION

I believe this was the translator's first work, and it had some rough patches. Sometimes it felt like MTL, with pronouns (he/she) getting mixed up and even names being rearranged. There were definitely grammar issues as well and switching between past/present-tense. If you're interested in starting this, I'd recommend getting ready to 'autocorrect' in your head while reading, haha. Otherwise, I appreciated the brief footnotes. Around chapter 70 (out of 92), a proofreader came in and tidied up a lot of the sentence structure and grammar. The only things that stayed were sentences that didn't make a lot of sense, probably due to the original translation being a bit off. It certainly wasn't unreadable, just a bit more involved.

SIMPLE STORYLINE

From the first chapter when the FL realizes she transmigrated after dying in a plane crash, I knew I would like her attitude. She assesses the situation she's in and decides that staying with her peasant husband is the way to survive. I also enjoyed her initial interactions with the ML's son, Xiao Bao, who was around 4 years old. The FL mentions how she's always liked children, and he opens up to her really easily. I loved their mother/child interactions! I was also worried that because the ML had an ex-wife, we would get relationship drama, but nah. The FL learns that he had an arranged marriage with the ex-wife and then yeeted to the army. The ex-wife gave birth and died, so she gone gone, lol.

Once the FL understands her situation, she does whatever she can to live a good life with her family. I like how she was open about cultivating feelings with her husband and treated him and their son really well. From then on, Li Mo (the FL) uses her beautician skills to make money and protect her family.

LIGHTER ON THE ROMANCE

While the ML was wary of the FL at first, he starts to open up and becomes an openly doting and loving husband. He's the quiet, succinct type with not many words but will go bonkers if you do something to his wife. Kind of like a gruff teddy bear? He's quite protective of his family. I thought it was refreshing that the ML was described as average-looking, poor, and disabled. Usually Cnovels put haloes on the love interests, but I think the shining factor of Song Dashan (the ML) was his devotedness to his wife, no matter his circumstances.

Their romance progressed in a pretty organic way as they became more comfortable with each other. And while the romantic factor of the story is not heavy, we do get so see some dog food moments between the couple. There's nothing that gets in the way of their relationship and it only grows stronger through time. It was sweet to see their loyalty and dedication to each other. I also love how the FL doesn't beat around the bush and is very direct/communicates well with the ML (especially regarding his horrible family). We stan open communication!

CHILDREN, FRIENDS, AND FAMILIES

I like how the FL builds a great support system that stays with the family throughout time. Their neighbors are really nice and the FL's business partners are capable women. When the FL's business gets up and running, she chooses employees carefully but also with heart. Li Mo gives opportunities to women who are down on their luck and struggling to survive, and in turn they work well. While the ML is supporting Li Mo every step of the way, her skills and initiatives are really the bread and butter of the story.

Let's talk about children! I adored (most of) the children in this book. Xiao Bao is indeed a treasure, as his nickname translates to, and the other boys he grows close to are so darling and well-behaved as well. I've seen reviews of Cnovels that feature children but don't really include them (so they're low key tossed to the side), but Li Mo thinks about the childrens' future and creates a nice growing environment for them.

FINALLY... THE BUSINESS

While it was interesting to see the FL's ideas and business ventures, sometimes the explanations about makeup and beauty became long-winded. Be ready for a couple of paragraphs, at least, about fixing one's facial flaws and contouring. Readers get to see the progression of the FL making balms and doing bridal makeup to eventually opening up her own beauty salon. She also creates opportunities for her family and neighbors (basically building her empire, lol). In general though, it seems like the author put time in figuring out what roles the FL would succeed in and what ideas would work, when brought from the modern era into historical times. I would say the FL doing business was ~40% of the book, with the rest being family-orientated and maybe 10% for additional conflict/light drama.

OVERALL

If you're a fan of historical Cnovels that are very focused on the main characters just living their life and making money, while falling in love and creating meaningful relationships along the way, Peasant Makeup Artist will fulfill those interests. While there are some conflicts that pop up here and there to spice up the story and keep the momentum going, it's an overall light and sweet read that follows the FL's family.

TL;DR Read this if you're into:

  • A devoted love interest that is very supportive and protective of the FL and their children
  • A transmigrated FL who uses her beautician skills to make her family prosper
  • Creating a support system with meaningful relationships, including sismances
  • Low drama, high slice-of-life with an emphasis on the FL's skills
  • Lots of family love, especially with the children
  • And a happily ever after!

It's a very sweet read. The FL is a beautician and it was very interesting seeing that. Yes, the ML doesn't do much (not OP) but he was always supportive and there for her, and sometimes that's all we need. They had a very sweet family.

The FL is so kind to children and that was really nice to read. I feel that there were too few chapters, cause we didn't see the end of some characters (what happened to the MIL, the BILs, Sister Yue, and other enemies/ friends she's... more>> made). Did not ruin the read for me, just left me a little unsatisfied.

Overall it's a very sweet slice of life read. Not much drama and heartwarming when you read it to the end. <<less

TLDR: It's good but it doesn't really stand out.

The story tells about ... more>>
Spoiler

Li Mo who was being sold but then suddenly bought by Song Dashan who was poor and temporarily disabled on an impulse buy. They ended up living together as a family, along with Dashan's son. Their paved their path to escape poverty, taking along some people with them, and eventually living a stable life.

[collapse]

The plot is alright, the development makes sense, and some plot points are interesting (like how FL makes extra money). It tends to be slice of life-y and heavily narrated so it felt dull at times. Sometimes things seemed to go too quick where too many things happening at the same time in the novel timeline, but it's pretty much the whole story for us. Other than that, it's quite predictable since things would go well all the time after a certain point in the story.
Spoiler

FL practically found all the right allies midway and from there it's smooth sailing.

The characters are alright, but if I have to recall them next month, I don't think I would be confident to do it since they don't feel memorable.

I felt bad for
Spoiler

ML's first wife since he didn't seem to treat her well. ML was quite a pushover until he suddenly changed after meeting FL.

The translation

feels crude since it's lightly edited MTL except for some chapters.

Overall it's a safe read but didn't pack enough impression. <<less

I really enjoyed this kinda slice-of-life heart warming story. Perfect read in-between heavier novels.
Laid back plot with no (or little) unnecessary drama. MC is skilled beautician who transmigrated to ancient times just as she was bought by ML. The ML family reminded me of the dad's vexing family in Fields of Gold (highly recommended book as it's also a light slice-of-life/ ancient times transmigration read, only MC is a skilled cook.) which happened in earlier plot.
Though it took place in ancient times, but doesn't have the usual royalty drama/ power struggle. Thus, I can read this (and also finished this) light-heartedly.

It was a satisfying novel to read to be honest. Although I'm only at chapter 89, I can say that the journey was good.

There aren't much brainless cannon fodder and the main conflict was really gripping. Moreover, the progress has a good pace and although there are some questions left unanswered, at least it wasn't much and didn't collapse the whole story.

this story is literally a slice of life depicting mc's journey from rags to riches... like literally she's wearing rugs upon mc's arrival.

i love how MC is although she is op in a sense because of her expertise, she's not too op like other transmigrators. this is the aspect that I love the most. mc's solely relies on her skills and experience from the previous world without a golden finger or photographic memory etc.

ML is just so adorable that will make you melt like a marshmallow. he's like a hot... more>> cocoa in winter that gives you warmth and makes you wish for a guy like him. rather than dominating CEOs or bad boy types (first lead syndrome) I prefer doting and reliable husbands (second male material). 😍😍😍

This is truly a hidden gem! A really good read! The pace and the overall read was just one wod --- comfortable (I can't describe it any other way) !

Contrary to all the schemes and plots in major noble households, this is a story of a master beautician/make up artist who became a poor farmer's wife and used her skills to allow her newfound family to lead a comfortable and simple life. No huge store chains, no struggle for power. Just an honest woman, doing honest work to earn honest... more>> money.

The main protagonist is a straight forward women with no frills. She has a strong set of values and is very loving. The male lead isn't the typical cold handsome war veteran. He is a loving husband and father who always support and dotes on his wife (henpecked to the maxxxx).

The ending is just WOW! SO GOOOODD!
Spoiler

We get to see the kids get married off!

What's better than these kind of epilogue?!

But there may be some triggering terms/phrase/words used ie ugly, fat. And there is a major focus on some traditional Chinese beauty standards and calling out those that do not conform to it as ugly but hey it's supposedly ancient China and she's going with the flow. She does say that they aren't ugly just ordinary so meh. Don't let these put you down and just enjoy the book. Also the translation is not edited but it's still readable (better than if you usually MTL it yourself).

Sooo if you are looking for a novel to cleanse your brains after all the schemes and black belliness or want some smart business growth in ancient times book or like to read about cute mother-son interactions or just simply passing through READ THIS. There would be no regrets! <<less

This has been a very nice read. The genre is completely grounded on slice of life little bits of ups and downs, but still idyllic enough to call it a peaceful sweet life.

Synopsis was very much on point.

Pros:

    • slight drama with ML's family but it'll never ever get too angsty, that I can promise
    • no stalling, length wise just right
    • hardworking, stable minded and smart MC
    • perfect ML is a realistic way, although he's no secret hot shot or the dream of all ladies (physically), he's perfectly doting, caring, supportive, able-bodied village man (in terms of character, he surpasses most MLs in my heart)
    • hardworking and supportive couple life
    • sweet realistic children that are smart but definitely have all the childish properties
    • 3d side characters
Cons:

    • MC settles into her new situation a bit too fast
    • the story might be just overall too business/money-making orientated, didn't have my fill of romance
    • the story telling rarely focuses on the emotional side from the main character and I feel like I still don't know her well enough (compared to the other characters we see from MC's POV that will definitely grow on you) the stronger emotions that anyone will obviously feel is there but it still lacks small crumbles of thoughts here and there
Notes: The translation is based on MTL so there are bumps here and there like a lot of wrong pronouns and lack of spellchecking & typos.

Dropping this @c24

I guess the story is just not my cup of tea. I've always been a sucker of reincarnation/transmigration plots that mostly takes place in modern times. I also like a couple of stories with the same plot that takes place in ancient times but I like it more on a lighter tone. This one feels serious and the in-laws just stress me out.

The translation quality is also... the pronouns are misused and a bit of grammatical errors are showing. I still suggest to read a bit to check... more>> if it's fine for you. <<less

3/5 the story is a slide of life, pretty relaxing and almost cero drama. Not super good or bad just meh. There was a moment that I feel that all was about business and how to make money and little bit of romance no to much. I wouldn’t re read this one again.
