This is the best LN i've ever laid my eyes on. Everything satisfies me to the point that I feel the achievements myself, the plot, the climaxs, the twists, even the ending.

I wont spoil anything here but it was really a nice journey.

My review and rating will make it look worse than it actually was.

TNYN had a strong start, with solid foundations. But it went off track in the middle, and ended up in a really strange and convoluted place by the end.

Yeah, that will definitely make you not want to start this. That isn't my intention, I really and truly enjoyed this. Sure, the end was wack to T, but I felt a lot of things when reading it from start to finish. Some development in characters was unexpected, and I... more>> mean that in an "Awesome!" way, I liked it very much and I am sure you will too.

The surprise details about power and some reveals were also neat.

Poor world building, odd and pointless filler arcs, not so well done characters are still there tho'

I guess what I am trying to say is: You don't really need all of that to enjoy the story. I found out at the end of the day that connecting with characters and looking forward to their adventures trumps all. That is really all I needed to enjoy this.

And if that is all you need, you may enjoy this as well. <<less

When I first read it as a Manga, I was immediately pulled in by the amazing plot and storyline, and after I finally completed the novel, my opinion of it has not changed at all.

This is an amazing, fun and interesting novel, one where I would never regret reading, but will regret having read it till the end... I mean I wish there was a lot more of it but I cant ruin the Beautiful Ending theyve made for it.

May everyone who worked on this project be blessed for this... more>> is an amazing work that deserves a lot of praise.

Also, yeah id definitely reccomend it to everyone who loves a good fantasy story, dont mind the negative reviews and try it for yourself, see if its actually what you expected it to be or not. <<less

Idk what happened that there aren't old chapters, but if you are starting it, just click on the translator website, many chapters are dispersed on different websites, sometimes you will jump chapters when clicking next. BTW, about the history, if you are taking from the manga, just start from the 4 heroes meeting on the Island Arc.

I won't put critics its just a little help that Im giving.

Good premise, incredibly strong development of characters and overall plot.

There's some fairly major pacing issues though, the middle of the novel tends to drag slightly and the ending scenes jump from 0 to 11 in basically half a chapter. Yes, half, because that's how absurd the level of escalation became near the end. The ending parts felt more like "getting it over and done with" rather than "a satisfactory ending" in my opinion.

It's a very good novel, probably deserving of 5 stars up till then though.

One of the best MCs I have seen in this story. Serious, strong, do a lot of thinking and not the generic pe*verted types. Another example I can give being similar to him would be Ainz Ooal Gown from Overlord.

The story itself is good to read too. And anyone who dislike the MC must have been goofy people who likes pe*verted or idiotic characters.

It's start nice but turn bad after his back being a hero again with the 3 heroic f*cking people what's the point if you just going to save the kingdom after they betray you and he still has hope for the kingdom ? Being an as*hole MC is a way to destroy the story ?

I liked this story a lot. It does well in explaining away some of the plot holes that pop up and the main character has a humble beginning, though at times his misfortune is rather head-scratching. The other characters aren't nearly as fleshed out as the protagonist, but their motives and behavior do transition in a mostly understandable way throughout the story. I am somewhat dissatisfied with how the story ends, however. It's probably the most cliched part of the story.

I'd also mention a couple of some of the other... more>> things, though it's more of a personal gripe. Some spoilers:

Spoiler
    • The story hits a speed bump at some point, where food becomes the highlight. People are praising how impossible the cooking is, asking him for food all the time, etc. While it's a bit annoying, it's at a bearable level.
    • Though I usually stay away from stories with angsty protagonists, this story manages to keep itself together without going over the top. At times, he'll act like an ass and everyone, including himself, is aware that he looks like a villain. However, he only acts like this to select individuals. The protagonist eventually gets special treatment, though it's mostly as a reward for his accomplishments rather than recompense for his mistreatment.
    • His love interest is someone he considers his daughter, which he points out a lot. He even acts like a drumpy father figure to her. She physically appears to be in early adulthood, but is half the protagonist's age. They become low-key obsessed with each other, despite being together for around half or 3/4ths of a year by the main arc's conclusion.
    • The stalker-like love interest that pops in later in the story is really annoying. I hate her.
[collapse]

PS: I'm not sure how to feel about the Harem tag. Does the protagonist hang out with a lot of females by the end of the story? Yes, but he put off romantic interactions for pretty much all of the story. There are maybe only three characters that actively try to get into his pants, though one is somewhat subtle about it and the other two don't pop up till near the end of the story. You don't get to see him flirt or anything at any point.

The epilogue merely states with whom he's had kids with, via some kind of documentary some hundreds of years later. <<less

It's rather hard for me to give this series a direct rating, as I feel that my rating would be somewhat biased. This is a very flawed story in places, not deserving of a 5/5 but I would absolutely recommend to anyone that they read it. If you can just look past the fact that it is very flawed, it is a must read. I can't really point out any of the good parts, because they would all be spoilers. I guess you can say that this series is full... more>> of surprises. This series' main flaw is the pacing. Some times there are arcs where nothing much happens, other times, it feels like they skipped an arc entirely. There are periods of downtime and inactivity in many parts of the book, but these are all filled with excellent moments of character development and comedic relief.

If you don't get hooked early on, there probably isn't much in this series for you, but if you find it even slightly intriguing, read it all the way. <<less

Personally, this novel is in my top 5 best novel i've ever read. I finished this novel first before I read many similar setting novel, so maybe my review is a bit inaccurate, but as I read more and more similar setting novels, not many have awesomeness as this one.

The story have up and down side, have some (maybe) boring moment, and have some most hated characters in history, but try to enjoy them since they just add dynamic to the story, so try to keep reading.

For anyone interested, this... more>> is a must read, though for someone that used to this setting will find some cliche moment, but again, try to compare it with some similar novel and you'll find this one is far better than common one. <<less

A great novel overall. Has a lot of funny and awesome moments. I read through it now that its completed. I'm just going to give it a 4 though as there are arcs that was just so boring IMO. But nonetheless I was still interested and continued reading through it.

Although I rate it a 4 star, I recommend this as a must read.

As far as summoned hero, this one give me a goosebumps. Even thought the ending a bit of cliche, but it is expected as the best one I can see. More than that, it's really a good story with it's ups and down. And as it goes through the plot, there is almost no useless part exposed in the story. Great job.

Best story related to being summoned as a hero. The plot twist will draw you into the story and the ending satisfied me even if it felt a bit rushed.

starts better than it ends, in general it wasn't that bad but there are some problems like the queen being a sadist,

Spoiler

the change from the tr*sh king which was super abrupt and meaningless or the fact that princess malty is an immortal goddess or something like that

[collapse]

also

Spoiler

the tact defeat was very forced because he was about 300 levels higher that them but lost because of a buff (if buffs worked like that who would bother to farm in a game)

[collapse]

It had some good parts like the initial or the island but it also has some bad parts like the new seven deadly sins (which was the purpose of that part to begin with)

There is also the fact that all the other heroes are pretty much as*holes no matter how you look at it and I don't mean the startup problem since that can happen to anyone but

Spoiler

motoyasu is a womanizer who allows himself to be manipulated (despite the fact that in his previous life he died because he was with several women)
itsuki thinks he's a protector of justice (but his justice is the first thing they tell him, basically he won't believe anything you say afterward even if you prove him wrong)
ren has no personality (but is somehow manipulated by malty WTF)

[collapse]

basically no hero is really important other than naofumi.

some characters can be loved like atlas and his brother but others are annoying like kiel or melty

the ending was lousy and doesn't make any sense compared to the rest of the story, overall it's not bad but it could have been better. <<less

I realized that I never wrote a review on this novel so let's do it!

My journey to Tate no Yuusha started after I said in a discussion thread that I love Sword Art Online novels and how I put the series (including Progressives) as one of my 3 favorite series among Haruhi and Koushinryou. The discussion obviously immediately piled on me, saying that my taste is tr*sh and how I must be new to anime. Hey I've only been reading manga and watching anime since 1993, but this many people... more>> can't be wrong I thought. The mob recommended me 2 titles, "Tate no Yuusha" and "Mushoku Tensei", because the title seems to be interesting, I thought I gave Tate no Yuusha a shot.

This was way before the anime and when the LN was just starting, I think the WN was either just completed, or just about to reach its end. I'm not sure about the timing, but what I can tell you for sure is, the time I spent on this series are one of the block of time in my life I will forever regret wasting. It's garbage.

How bad this series is went beyond bad story or bad characters, or bad pacing or the like. If anything this series worst quality is it's seemingly decent setup and world building that convinced the readers that maybe, just maybe, it will pick up and actually be good. It didn't. There's something more fundamental beyond the bad story and godawful characters (sans Raphtalia and Atlas). As you are reading the novel it became obvious just how chuuni and pitiful the author is, it made you wonder, "Just who hurts this author?? To whom are they projecting this hate, this thirst for revenge??"

Spoiler

When the queen showed up and started concocting a snuff gore film featuring her own daughter, and then watch the actual resulting footage with everyone... Yea, you can only ask me to suspend my disbelief so much before it all crashes down. I mean, what kind of a mother who, as punishment, was willing to give up her daughter to an infamous wife-killing rapist pig king, knowing full well that her daughter is about to be brutalized and mu*dered?? When bit*h somehow turned into Thanos, and Naofumi and Raphtalia ascended into godhood, I near somersaulted where I sat. The whole conflict and Naofumi's hatred for bit*h is one of the worst writing I have ever encountered.

[collapse]

So yea in conclusion, Tate no Yuusha is a plastic novel filled to brim with plastic characters, interwoven in a plastic plot. It is contrived, it is trite, it is ban*l and perplexing. Every chapters I am reading it thinking, "this feels like things about to pick up, maybe it'll get better soon." Only to be betrayed again and again and again. I have read the novel all the way to the end, word for word, and I must say, I hated every minute of it. Tate no Yuusha feels like a chuuni masturbating their daydream until it ejaculated all over the screen and then forced on me to lick all over with my tongue. It's clearly written by someone who hates their life, hates humanity, and hates literature. <<less

Strong start to the story, with Naofumi starting from the bottom to rise to the top, whilst dealing with some of the most annoyingly petty characters imaginable. But since he got most of the way there fairly quickly, it eventually devolves into a collection of mildly enjoyable B-stories for 2/3rds of the novels. Story ends in a nonsensical, over-the-top fashion. The mild kingdom building, business management and character development; saves the latter half of the story for me. Quite a lot of "Edge" but lacking the "Blade" to follow through.... more>> Someday I'll check out the LN version, which I hope is better. <<less

A 2 star because of 3 reasons.

Spoiler
    1. I don't like harems and Atla.
    1. An overpowered powerspike for MC at the end.
    1. Immortality and the story's end.
      [collapse]
But I'll give a 3 star because:

Spoiler

When Naofumi became crazy and tried to revive Raphtalia, even though she was alive. Even so this made me shed a bit of tears.

Wow this is easily the best completed light novel I have read. Looking at other reviews with unfinished chapters I would like to say that you really have to read to the end to fully enjoy this series.

This series is the type of initial anti-hero, weak to strong and defensive-oriented trying to get offended type of light novel. The second and third train can be found in Spirit Blade Mountain so I recommend that series if you like this series. Anyways, it can be seen that this series also has... more>> quite a bit of inspiration of Subarashi no Sekai so I would recommend that light novel as well.

Anways, I enjoyed this series due to the close and dramatic events, although most of the series is based on light-hearted ways of presentation, there are some dark themes and not so much comedic moments. However, it does have quite a fair bit of romance, loyalty and most importantly, reflection. I really enjoy Naofumi’s character, his character is very consistent except for a short parts, and even then, there are proper reasons and trade offs.

One important distinction from other “summoned to a fantasy world” or reincarnation plots is simply the arduous journey of Naofumi, and his choices. It can teach One that no matter what One wishes, there will always be good and bad results that occur. This is far better than the summoning swries’ plots of overkill powers or mysterious power-ups or luck etc.

And the ending arc is simply the best. Read the ending arc if you are unable to read through the middle, but hey I understand, cos the middle is kinda mild. <<less

To me this felt average.

Its a long story, has good points and bad points. However to me the good doesn't outweigh the bad and vice versa.

The trouble starts with what appears to be re-written and changed as the story went on. The largest point I could tell was in the end where it was cut off abruptly and then re-written for a different one. Similar instances within it on my second pass could be spotted where certain parts were shifted around to find a way to continue or expand it.

But... more>> that's not to say it is done badly. Overall I liked it as a whole, and although the ending did feel a bit off-the-rails to me it did have a decent conclusion and an overarching story of change for the characters involved.

It is worth it if you have the patience I think, but the payoff takes time knowing that there is ups and downs all through it. <<less
