“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

Truth be told I was unsure at first if I'll read this novel or not, even though a lot of my online peers have recommended this a lot, again and again I didn't budge not until this year came. I'm not used to with this type of genre since I'm more into mystery/thriller, but regardless of the genre I still have it a try and guess what??? I'M SO IN LOVE WITH THIS NOVEL😭. No words can't explain what I truly feel but I say to all THIS IS WORTH... more>> READING.

As it was coming to and end it suddenly occured to me that, "I'll stop reading this book for now" for the reason that I can't bear the thought that it's coming to an end (it was 10 chapters before the epilogue) but then again I can't stop thinking about it so in the end I BINGE READ THE WHOLE NOVEL.

I SO MUCH LOVE AN ZHE, HE'S EVERYTHING.

I LOVE HOW LU FENG TEASES AN ZHE, and I can't get enough of it HAHAHAHA

An Zhe is effortlessly funny I tell you.

All in all, I really love this novel.

Highly recommended! <<less

The novel is about a fight for survival in a post apocalyptic world. Fighting with mutant creatures outside of the base and fighting with own kind on the inside. Fighting for the rights to stay alive and to keep one going with the principle that survival of humankind is the upmost goal.

The survival of humankind for the price of humanity. One of our greatest abilities is to control our innate desires and make the right decision. But where is the check and balance? What part does emotion play or not... more>> at all?

A novel with very strong theme and very well executed plot. I'm not a fan of sci-fi or apocalyptic stories but this novel hit all the right notes. There were quite a few scenes which had me crying and some had me laughing out loud.

I was hooked from the get-go by our simple MC. His simple goal and his journey8 to become more human. MC offered a pragmatic view on humankind current affairs and our ML He brought some much humour and light-heartedness to our gloomy ML. Looking at the humanity and ML through his mushroomy perspectives, it's refreshing and cute. Our cold & detached ML seems to get more human with his increasing contact with the little sentient mushroom. I feel for our ML, his sacrifices only seen by MC's non human eyes. These two characters growing closer slowly, building trust and dependency on each other.

By the way, there is an audio book production which is just awesome - from the 2 lead voice actors to dialogue to sound, just such a great production.

It was simply amazing, I really really loved it; the character's were exceptional and I could feel the depths of their desperation and determination. I can gladly say that this is the best danmei novel that I've ever read. Thank you author and to the translators who worked so hard to bring this novel to life. I will forever treasure An Zhe and Lu Feng in my heart, one of the best couple that I've met. I'm glad that I read this and may their story be remembered by many.

A stunning read. Highly recommended.

The characters are unique and the story telling is really good. From someone who's somewhat became numb from reading too many books, this one actually took me through a rollercoaster of emotions. I still wish it didn't end so I still keep reading it a few more times. 💕 Try it! Definitely won't regret reading this one💕💕

I love love loved "Little Mushroom"

Why? Because of the relationship of the main cast, because of how the story is just so well written and not just focused around romance or world building. All of it balances each other out so well.

Sure, there's some parts which might make your heart clench in literal pain, but always remember its an HE (Happy Ending) so, never feel too down (like me, since I ended up sobbing for my babies)

The angst isn't too much, nor to little. The romance is just the... more>> right amount, even in dangerous situations it seems that our main cast can still feel as though its fine, they'll get through it.

Also, the development of them both. Lu Feng's development was literally beautiful, so so beautiful.

An Zhe's development on the other hand, was just so damn good that I can't explain it with words. We can slowly but surely see the way, that our little mushrooms emotions show up, they are very minimal at first, but as you continue on with the novel, you can literally just see and appreciate the character development in all its glory.

All in all, it was a beautiful story, well written, good character development, just the right amount of romance and world building.💗 <<less

It was good. Look at the ratings an reviews. However, I also agree with joytowild's review and think the romance could have better. I also think we as reader's have been spoiled by a surplus of romance with balanced relationships and unconditional love.

I think this story gives a more realistic relationship. I think the characters also acted true to their concepts. The MC was very forgiving but he was this way to other characters as well. He never took things personally and considering most things natural even betrayals, consequently he... more>> was never severely hurt by loss or death because he also considered it natural. It makes sense for him to be more tolerant than the ML.

The ML, as judge, was very strict and lived by his code. The small concessions he made for MC by our standards may have been nothing but it was more than he offered anyone else including his family.
Spoiler

I audibly said "that's dedication" when he hunted down his mom. I know she had lost her mind and turned but still. Like damn. That was when I knew he must have been down bad for MC because while him and his mom didn't have the best relationship, they were still on good terms and he obviously cared for her.

[collapse]

But as joytothewild stated the author went easy on the ML and never really forced him into a position to choose An Zhe over his code. I mean there were times he was tested but instead of making a choice the author allowed him get away with just turning a blind eye.
Spoiler

Like when he hunted down MC but made no actual move to turn him in. Eventually he had to call the base for an unrelated emergency regarding the plot but the author never forced into a situation where he was confronted with reinforcement and the MC because the MC took the initiative to leave the ML. He got away with an inaction. At the same time considering Lu Feng's characterization that was something big tbh

[collapse]

The characters are well written and how they engage together reflects that. It's not the all consuming love like "Mistakenly Saving the Villain" or "A Guide to Raising Your Enemy" but it fits the story. It's a slow romance as it says in the tags. All the characters are actually well developed. We see how none of them are perfect and most cannot be considered good or bad. An interesting character is Collin.

I feel like if a character got the chance to regress or someone transmigrated into their body Collin would be the main character despite him being a side character, one people might even dislike. Collin is a character that was very passionate about human rights in a time when most humans were either morally or physically not even human. He spoke about ideals about equality and freedom to choose. However, it was the worst possible time. The changes he wanted were not feasible for the current time and didn't always make sense considering the situation. I felt like his character given the small role he had in the story was annoying at times but made an impression and given the chance his character's story would be very interesting. <<less

I wouldn't say this story is life changing, but it was a good read.

I read this story for the relationship between the MC and ML. I really couldn't have cared less about the plot, but that is entirely due to my disinterest in sci-fi (give me a 800 chapter cultivation novel and I could read for days about all the backstory). I ended up skimming most of the scientific-y explanations and backstories of the base, but I didn't ever feel lost.

A couple of things to keep in mind: there is... more>> no betrayal tag, there is no tragedy tag, and there is no r*pe tag. These all are very near-miss as there were a few times that I double and triple checked for these tags while I was reading.

If I had to nit-pick about anything it would be on the translation not using euphemisms for 'shot in the head' ('executed' is right there) : aside from the fact that shots to the head aren't always fatal in the first place, it got really monotonous reading 'xx was shot in the head' a hundred+ times.

There are other things I didn't actually like in this story, but I don't really want to focus on that when I did actually make it to the end of the story in a good mood. <<less

I was always reluctant to read this, thinking it was too deep and I might not like it. I love the summary at that time but some of the comments discouraged me. This time, I tried to push myself to finally read it, and it's definitely worth it. I laugh, I cried, different emotions. This story is too alive. The premise, the characters, the world, one the stories that made me feel like I am also seeing what the MC sees around him.

Characters:

You could say MC was like a... more>> bystander at first. He was a mushroom that knows nothing about human emotion. He has no empathy, and simply watch things unfold in front of him. He was a mushroom, and he is only aware of the system of the Abyss. He was used to death of the creatures around him, so he also thinks it's normal. He was cute and will make you feel that you need to protect him at all cost. Now I actually find mushrooms as cute although it was one of my favorite food 😂. I think the person who makes him feel or experience those emotions is the ML only. He knows how to be angry, how to throw a temper, and how to feel happy towards him.

ML on the other hand, I feel so much pity for him. He was handsome and I also love him. The fact that most people is against him killing when he was doing his job right and trying to protect everyone from more death when a heterogeneous slips in. At first, I thought there's something in his eyes where he can see a color in the infected person and where in the body it started. Especially when he first meet the MC. It's actually unclear, and it might just really be his instinct. The way he dotes, but also teases the MC though. The same fact that I only saw him laugh because of the MC. A typical ML but he has more depth.

Even the other characters. It's not just about ML or MC, but also how every characters tried their best to save humanity.

The overall story was really good. I cried at the near end but thankfully, it's really a happy ending. The extras are also cute. Showing snippets of their life after the ending. I binged read it and finished it in one night. Definitely worth it. <<less

changed the trajectory of my life 10/10

also made me cry with a sentence that, out of context, would sound cute. That kind of sums up this novel, so watch out it you're looking for sheer fluff LOL

But in more of a serious review on why I got so into this, I loved the contrast of tones and how feelings and morality are portrayed, especially from the point of view of an outsider, a non human entity. The tone of the world in series was so hopeless at times, that it... more>> makes you cherish any small sweet interaction between the main characters, and if this was set in a different setting I may not have really noticed them near as much. <<less

desolate, incredibly reflective. For me, this would be the ideal type of novel to read on a quiet and calm winter night

This novel was FAR BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE. Going in, I only knew of this being sci-fi and having nice angst. I don't particularly love or hate sci-fi, but I LOVE angst. Then there were soooo many other aspects of this novel that I loved!!!!

1. The building. SO MAGNIFICENT. I love this deliberate, meticulous type of read. There is not one insignificant detail (as... more>> much as it may not seem). The novel goes beyond of what I expected in the sci-fi and philosophical elements; deeper and deeper into the concepts as the story progresses. This totally blew me away. The build-up was a little lengthy and consistent; an enduring process.
    • Again, I'm not a fan of sci-fi. To be more specific with this novel, the monsters' random mix of traits (some background science here and there) and overall apocalyptic world isn't something I find particularly interesting. But, unexpectedly, it dove DEEP into the science behind this. To the very fundamentals. It was weaved well into the story, it feels the very most of complete. Thinking back, there were definitely foreshadowing for this though
    • Philosophical elements. For first half of the novel it's more about the group interests in society with a clear distinction. Later, it builds off of that, into the characters more personally and then those in-between of those beliefs and ideas. Everything is sooooooooooooooooo developed, it just really takes time and thought. But due to that, it doesn't feel overwhelming at all. It's easy to digest, but additionally the novel doesn't explain it all to you. While there are realizations in the novel, the connecting together and interpretation heavily depend on the reader
2. An Zhe and Lu Feng is really interesting to me, the totally natural way they have been brought together. I really loved this portrayal of love. There's an undeniable bond from how compatible they are, but their commitment + interest + effort + courage is equally as important. This sounds fun but later in the novel I felt slapped across the face a bunch of times. The world was really trying to tear them apart, but from this

it reminds you all of what they are.

3. The Angst. I've got to be one of the greatest angst enjoyers I swear. I LOVE IT VERY BADLY. Little mushroom gives pretty good angst in my more personal opinion. They don't have a devastatingly long development full of hurt. Instead, it's very subtle. Just under the surface of these characters. This explodes at the key moments. But disregarding the main characters, it takes on a desolate feeling for much of the story. I couldn't help but feel completely hopeless for the characters in this novel many times.

4. Surprise factor isn't something that really matters in this novel, though you can kinda guess that from just the primarily deliberate and meaningful nature of this novel <<less

I’m a picky reader and haven’t gotten into any cnovels in so long until this. This is such an amazing story, the world building, the characters, and the romance. All of it was written so well. I loved both the MC and ML. It’s HE too, I wish I could forget this story so that I can reread this like the first time again and again.

I honestly hated this novel but it's too good to rate any lower. Whether it's the character building or plot, even the translation was handled well.

But I honestly was expecting fluff only to get punched really hard by reality. If it wasn't for the HE tag I wouldn't of read it to the end because I was in tears trying to find the happy ending. (There is one btw)

Even though I'd never read it again, and the fact that angst books are not my cup of tea, I don't... more>> regret finishing this one.

Although now I always check the comments before reading any novel just in case. <<less

It's a very good novel, a great work I should say. This novel made me question things that should not be answered, this novel made me realize just how fragile and fickle human life is. Humanity's sins their good virtues and attributes, the despair, sadness, anger, happiness. It was well portrayed and detailed this novel made me feel anxious about the upcoming future. 'Will humans experience this? Do we ever have time to stop it? If it ever does happen, will humanity ceased to exist?' Questions after questions surged my... more>> head.

I'm very reluctant to part with this novel, this writing made me cry that I almost woke up my siblings. You don't have to worry An Zhe and Lu Feng have a happy ending. The humanity is still standing, although mixed with different genes, humans are still alive.

Spoiler

I'm very attached to Vance, Poet, Boss Shaw and Du Sai, unfortunately they died too early on the novel, perhaps it was blessing to die than survive in that cruel world, It was just sad they didn't get to see humanity peacefully even if its only a short time. I pity Madam Lu, Hubbard and Tang Lan. Perhaps they would have live a nice, quiet and beautiful life if things didn't happened as they were. But we humans do not know such thing as future. I also really like Doctor Ji haha such a funny guy, I'mvery surprised he stayed sane in the end.

[collapse]

This novel is unique and different than what I usually read, this is a new change. I'm very surprised about the writing, it makes you feel really sad and numb, as if you the reader was also a judge looking down the people and killing them. This novel, i, I'm very glad I read this.

The ML and MC are sweet and loving, fantastic and enjoyable to watch, as if they're the only star in wide countless galaxies. The supporting characters doesn't fall behind, they were great as well, they mostly makes me feel the most sad. Because their story or background was so heart-wrenching. I do wish they're reincarnated in another place away from crisis just like year 2020.

(P.s listen to apocalypse by cigarette after sěx, this song gives well in the melancholic and the two of us left vibe. And perfect. <<less

LM is really quite dark but it kept me entertained throughout my reading.

Aside from bits of sweetness between AZ and LF, I'd say it was a "clean" adventure story, very little focus on romance except for the extras.

Very emotionally entangling but you'll see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's HE but who can say for sure.

The best novel I read this year, and definitely my favorite Sci-Fi danmei. It was cute and fluffy but also beautiful and subtle. An Zhe was the prefect protagonist and I found myself falling for him as a main character even faster than Lu Feng.
