A nice happy ending story with only a few road bumps (one of them a little major but otherwise easily dealt with).

The MC transmigrates into the body of a woman who had just unalived herself with rat poison. She's shocked at first but quickly adapts to her new reality and views her instant husband as her new home. While she has her own skills (which is being a beautician for the wealthy in the modern world), she does inherit the memories of the original which allows her to function in... more>> the ancient era (somewhat, she can barely cook but she can at least sew clothing). Her whole goal in life is to live happily with the ML and make sure they have a happy life. She also very quickly develops feelings for him.

The ML is a former soldier who was chosen by his family as the one to go (his family is mostly tr*sh) to the military. He is often manipulated by his mother and older siblings who try to take everything that he has. It's not that he doesn't have a backbone but more like it was not worth the fight. Initially, he only purchased the MC (and claimed her as his wife) to prevent her from being purchased by a skeezy older man in the village. From there, he was pleasantly surprised by the MC choosing to be with him and his son. Feelings happen very quickly but they don't act on their desires until much later.

The story begins with the MC waking up and choosing happiness because it's rather clear that no one would treat her as well as the ML does (seriously, for a poor guy, he's like the greenest flags I've ever read). From there, she begins making money by making perfume balm and putting makeup on brides before eventually moving to the city to put make up on rich ladies. Finally, the story ends with them opening a shop that specializes in just beautician stuff (kind of like a spa) while selling products from another friend's store. There are very few hurdles for the couple to go through. The major ones are as follows:

Spoiler

The first is his sh*t family. Starting out, his sister-in-law shows up and literally steals the food off his table that the MC had purchased for the ML's son to give to her kids. She also demands whatever money he has because he clearly has some as he bought the MC. Even his mother takes the side of the sister-in-law over the brother because she believes she will need to rely on the eldest son and that sister-in-law. They even force the ML to pay for the damage done when one of his brothers pushes another guy off a roof. Eventually, the family fully separates and we never see them again.

Then there is the guy who is insistent on getting with the MC. He didn't believe that she was happy with the ML because the ML was a farmer and a cripple. She turned him down which only led to him getting violent and grabbing her hard enough to bruise her arm/wrist. After that, he got the ever-loving tar beat out of him by the ML which was the end of that.

The only real major road bump is the daughter of the Magistrate. The MC couldn't refuse the order from the nobles so the MC had no choice but to put makeup on this woman. This happens in around the first third of the story but then towards the middle, the Magistrate tries to convince the MC they will give her family 100 silver if she goes to the capital to be the dressing maid for the magistrate's daughter. When she refuses, his butler literally tries to buy her from the ML. He refuses so then they try to take her by force. Of course, there is a deus ex machina in the ML realizing that the new captain of the city is his old army buddy so she gets rescued (but there is some mild torture with needles first).

After that, there is nothing that can really stop them.

[collapse]

There isn't a lot of faceslapping in this but it's nice as the MC doesn't have the traditional cooking/sewing/etc super power. Even her business sense is based on the life she had before transmigration. Any kind of karma in the story is generally along the lines of getting what you deserve.

Spoiler

Such as the ML's sister who had been sold as a child and was purchased to be a child bride. However, she ended up with a good family (and developed genuine feelings for her husband). The ML and the couple regularly helped each other so the MC brought the sister and her family to make money with them.

Even the family that helped out occasionally was helped when the ML and MC moved to the city. He basically gave his donkey cart business to them and introduced them to the restaurant people who needed firewood or vegetables delivered.

[collapse]

The extra stories are kind of cute but feel weird as it covers the eventual marriage of the MC and ML's two children (it's like super time jump). Otherwise, this is a nice relaxing read about a transmigrator who gets a happy ending. <<less

Even though I'm no fan of makeup, and skipped a couple of chapters which went into detail about it, I still enjoyed the story.

Li Mo's business ideas are in line with the plot development. Paired with her biggest supporter, Song Dashan, the story ran smoothly. I admired his devotion towards his wife. While he is an average-looking disabled ex solider, he is broad-minded and acknowledges her wife's decisions to be conductive to the improvement of their family's lifestyle.

If you are into independent female leads matched with an over-indulging husband, raising... more>> a child and revolving around beauty business, then this novel is for you. <<less

Overall, it was a good read, 3/5. Maybe because I read The Female Peasant Doctor first and was expecting a similar FL, I was slightly disappointed with this novel’s FL. Plus, I found myself skimming the make up explanations since I wasn’t too interested in them. It definitely had its own cute and interesting moments but I didn’t find myself as invested in this story as TFPD. Plus, my frustrations over how the author has written FL’s money making plans has ruined the immersion for me. If anything, FL didn’t... more>> really make any significant money from her skills (make up and beauty products) until towards the end. Most of her money came from windfalls that happened coincidentally. Probably won’t reread but was a pleasant read to pass the time. <<less

This was a good read. The pace was just right and I was so proud of the character development. The hardwork, wit and dedication put in so that they could improve their life was praise worthy. Minimal drama except for family and other minor things which are normal and they were short lived.

It does have some difficult parts though like ... more>>

The presence and impact of the beauty standards were so overwhelming through out the novel and I do understand that it is not something they could change especially being a beautician, you go with what your clients want. Preaching self love is cute but won’t change the people’s desire to fit into the standards.

Overall it was enjoyable and I just love novels where the kids whose growth we followed up get married and have their own families so it was a good ending for me. <<less

It's short, light, and sweet. I don't want to read harrowing novels back to back. So after reading Thousand Miles of Bright Moonlight, this is a relaxing, mindless short read. There's drama and conflicts on this one, but steers away from the political trope of other transmigration novels.

It's an interesting mix of traditional and modern way of thinking (not really just in China). It may be a bit off putting for others when MC talks about ... more>>

, but it can't be helped. It's an important premise of the story that enabled it's development.

There are a few minor plot loopholes, but I don't think they affect the main story. If you've been reading C-novels, you would already have a good idea of rural China (or anything rural in ancient times), so not much world-building is needed. I adored majority of the characters, and there weren't a lot of antagonists here. A rags to comfortable riches story that is quite satisfying to read.

Go binge! <<less

It was alright. I don't really like the makeup aspect, even though it's the name of the book lol. I think the only reason continued reading was because I just like the poor to rich trope in the old days. I did not read the extra's because I don't really care for romance that involves the children in these types of stories. I wish we knew what happened with the ML's shameless family. Like I'm sure they wouldn't just completely give up. I'm not sure if it's in the extra... more>> couple of chapters or not. <<less

It was an okay novel. My main complaint is why the hack is ever female that know the MC is call Sister-in-law? Is it because of translation or is it actual like that in the non-translation.

well, if you guys are wondering, the family drama lasts until chapter 28/29. Afterwards, there is really no family drama

this novel is not that bad but I prefer the other story, The Peasant Female Doctor.

Spoiler

I dont know I just felt in this novel, the ML really did not do anything except being supportive to the FL. Like for real, he did not do anything impressive unlike the other series. And also the ML scene is really limited hahah

anyway, yeah not too bad, good book to pass the time

Writing/Translation

The translation by Shanghai Fantasy is not the best but it is basically 95% understandable. Much better than mtl. There are some pronoun mistakes throughout the story but it is not too bad and you can always still understand the story. A couple of name errors, but all good. No grammar or spelling mistakes that I know of. Some sentences are a little bit awkward or could be better but you can easily understand the gist of it. Basically, it is easy to understand and read. Apparently, this was... more>> an edited mtl.

Plot

The plot structure is pretty good. It is a basic transmigrator rags to riches story with a happy ending. No face slapping or at least it is too minor to be considered the usual cn novel face slapping.

Themes/What it Tried to Achieve

It sufficiently achieved a rags to riches plot using an interesting skill of makeup to succeed. The makeup medium used by the author was very interesting to read about and how this could be done in ancient China without modern technologies. It was satisfying to see how the MC slowly used her sole skill to improve the lives of her family and even friends. It was a very nice wish-fulfillment type of story without being over the top or too unbelievable.

Pacing

Pacing was good, I was kept interested at all times. Was never bored or thought anything was too slow or too rushed.

Characters

They were all likeable! I loved the MC, her new husband and the new kid. The husband is a good man given a bad course in life. He turned out to be devoted and kinda dreamy with how he quietly supported the MC. The little kid was so adorable that it was a pleasure to read how the MC would earn money to buy him little snakes and good food to feed him, who also had a bad start. The side characters were not bad and nice to root for. The villains were all nicely self-entitled that they made you dislike them. However, they were not particularly memorable, just a normal type of bad guy in this time period.

Overall

The only few cons I have is that I wish we could have read some scenes about their reactions to the success of the MC. Make it a bit more cathartic. The second one is the s*x in general. The whole scene about s*x that were shown did not feel romantic in any way. I just feel a bit uncomfortable, maybe it was the sentence choices used. For the MC and her husband, it felt like they did it, next day, she's in pain and the husband treats her like she's porcelain when he was the cause and she dryly jokes in her mind that he should be more gentle, etc. I personally don't like this type of trope/attitude. But the s*x scenes are really quite few and really quite fade to black so I can ignore them. The other thing was that I wish they didn't include the wedding night s*x scene for Xiao Bai the little kid. We spent the majority of the book on him as a kid and only like 2 chapters on him as an adult. It felt too jarring to read about him on his wedding night lol.

Otherwise, I quite liked this story. We go into detail how the MC slowly made more and more money and then improving her family's quality of life quite clearly. I really really like this trope or making use of modern knowledge in the ancient world. And who doesn't like a rags to riches type of story? This was surprisingly wholesome ish with a couple of sudden anxiety during a bit of action. But it was mostly calming and just need to read about the MC working hard and be rewarded for her hard work. It felt earned. I would definitely recommend it.

Very chill and down to earth. Mainly focuses on modern cosmetic technology in ancient times. FL is a modern-day expert beautician that transmigrated into Ancient China. Her new role is a girl who had just been recently sold off to a kind rural man with a 3yo son. Seeing the difficulties of her situation, the FL begins to slowly adapt while working hard to improve their lives from then on. It shares a lot of common themes with similar novels in the same genre, in that there is a poor-to-rich... more>> aspect. But the FL is more sensible than most and only wants to give her husband and son a good life.

The romance is mostly a side thing, and there’s also a lack of serious character development. But it’s not to the detriment of the novel. I think it’s a good length, I didn’t finish it, but I was close enough to the end and I can safely say that it is worth the read. I’ve seen a lot of doctors in ancient times, chefs in ancient times, farmers in ancient times, embroiderers in ancient times, etc. But this is my first time seeing a beautician version. It’s definitely not as a exciting and can be a bit dry at times, but the uniqueness makes it worth a try!

RATING: 3.65/5

Although my rating for the novel seems low, it’s actually higher than normal for me. I definitely think the novel is a little better than average, but it’s probably not for everyone. If you like slice of life and transmigration novels where modern day knowledge is described, then this novel is worth the try! <<less

Translation: 4/5

Plot: 4/5

Characters: 3/5

... more>> Make-up Skill: Legendary

MC transmigrates into ancient China, is very practical about it, grows an income with her make-up skills, grows relationship with the ordinary looking, supportive ML and ML's son. There's nothing excessive about the setup, the plot points are standard, but the development is steady. Gave up near the middle because it got... blandly repetitive. MC faces an issue, and somehow make-up skills saves the day, rinse and repeat. Translation is fine, some pronoun misuse and meandering sentences though. The high plot rating is only because for the simple setup, at least there's no ridiculous developments, it's a short read, skimmed to the end, HE. <<less

There is no roller coaster of emotion, there is no thrill, there is no heart break or extreme misery either, but if you don't expect any at the first place, then this is a great novel to read. I didn't expect much, and I was a bit tired of all the OP, super good-looking and high class characters, so I enjoyed it a lot.

I feel the characters are quite realistic (as realistic as you can expect from a transmigation novel), and even though MC has some cheats, but it's not... more>> that outrageously fantastic, most of what they gradually achieve are through hard work and positive attitude.

MC's business is a bit too smooth, but it's not without it's challenges and setbacks, so it is still quite good except for the later part when they soar too high (but it's just my objective opinion, as I feel it would be more natural given their start that they become just well-to-do or ordinary wealthy in their hometown).

I also find it refreshing that there is no overly destructive or repetitive face slapping for ML's abusive family. There are a lot of that in many similar novels, but in the end, how many family feuds should end up with destruction? I like the characters here just look forward, getting themselves busy carving their own better future, rather than getting entangled or tangling themselves with revenge.

All in all, an enjoyable novel, with likeable characters. <<less

I’d say this is probably a good novel so I’m giving it a 4/5 but my own experience is closer to a 3/5. The ML is fine and so is the FL but I’m flickin tired of them both taking so much crap from his family. Like yes, I understand you don’t have any “cheats” but like, you are still a person who should be smart enough to do something by now. So I’m dropping now 🤷‍♀️

Enjoyable book. Interesting read of how someone with no other skills than being a makeup artist can survive I. The olden days. Some areas are a bit unrealistic but overall sweet story of the FL relationships with others, my favourite is little stepson - Xiao Bao.

It's a satisfying read that mainly focuses on her career as a make-up artist and developing a spa center in ancient China. So if you're looking for romance, look elsewhere. Everything else (romance, family, kids, friends) are more in the background. A good point is that the ML's troublesome family drama is settled early on. Everyone else is very supportive of her career, especially her husband. The two develop their relationship well and there's no miscommunication or anything. In fact, ML isn't op but is super supportive of her.

The only major con is:

Spoiler

It can get a little bland after she develops her spa center. Afterwards, it's mostly how she finds people to take care of the store when she gets pregnant. There's not many scenes with her husband either.

This is a satisfying and good novel.

FL (Li Mo) used her knowledge as a famous beautician/makeup artist in past life to get a better life in ancient time with little resources. She's business-minded and smart; but I'm glad that she's not too OP... she also got her own limitations and not good in everything. I also liked that she helped many people in her way to success.

ML (Song Dashan) was also a lovable and kind character... despite his disability and poverty, he still willing to help others. More importantly, he's... more>> a good husband who supported and cared for his wife.

I also loved most of supporting characters (except Song family) throughout lead's journey.

The only con was the translation tho. <<less

Absolutely loved it.

Our smart and resourceful MC was paired with a dedicated and loving ML.

This novel did not follow the usual transmigration troupe with any unscientific golden finger. She was able to better her families quality of living by relying on her actual skills and the support of our endearing and devoted ML. Her interactions with the child was also sweet to see.

Moreover, I was so thankful that the problem with the ML's shameless family was resolved in a timely manner. The author made it a point to completely cut... more>> them off after they showed enough animosity to our MC's loved ones. What a relief I felt.

The author did such a great job with this novel and thank you translator for your efforts. <<less
