After Marrying the Disabled Crown Prince of the Enemy Country

Le Zhi, the little princess of country Li, is charming and beautiful, and she looked like a begonia.

However, once her country was destroyed, she crawled out of the hell on earth by stepping on the bones of the dead and was brought back to the enemy’s country Qi by Huo Xu, a childhood sweetheart and a thankless wretch, who had entered the country Li as a prince sent to be held as a hostage from a young age.

Huo Xu looked at her with affection, “Zhizhi, help me bring the Crown Prince down. You will be my only Empress in the future.”

Le Zhi pretended to put down her blood feud and smiled to agree.

Huo Du, the Crown Prince of the country Qi, looked like a banished immortal but has a disability in his right leg. He has a sly and ruthless personality with insanely evil behavior.

One day, his imperial father bestowed him a marriage and gave him the princess of the subjugated country.

Huo Du sneered one after another. Huo Xu’s childhood sweetheart? Beauty trap? Tut-tutted, his imperial younger brother was really willing.

He raised his hand to stroke the white cat on his lap lightly, “Oh, you have a toy.”

Huo Xu was a person with a noble and benevolent character on the outside but with an insatiable greed for power, position, and beauty on the inside.

The position of the Crown Prince, his beloved childhood sweetheart… All these were within his grasp.

He was very satisfied.

… Until he was tied to a prison post.

And his imperial elder brother curled his lips and handed the knife to his sweetheart and said with a smile, “Kill him. You can stab as many knives as you want.”

While he was frightened, he saw Huo Du turn the tip of the knife towards his heart and slowly said to Le Zhi, “Or do you want to kill me first? That’s fine too…”

Huo Xu’s eyes trembled. Did he hear it wrong, or his imperial brother is crazy?

Premise + Plot Execution: 3

Characters: 2

... more>> Writing: 2.5

This was an ok novel. Mediocre at best. It was an interesting premise, yet it seemed like the author failed to do it justice. The pacing felt too fast. Most of the scenes weren't fleshed out well. The plot points didn't have cohesion. It felt abrupt moving from one arc to another. The characters seemed quite hollow. I felt like considering this is an ancient setting, there would be more adhering to ancient rules, like filial piety. The Crown Prince never goes to court. The FL never goes to show greetings to the Empress after marrying in. Maybe it might be because of her being from the enemy country.

There were supernatural elements that seemed very out of place, like the author just added them for their own convenience. It felt like an undissolved sugar cube in soup.

The FL is not like other revenge-seeking, vicious ones. She is quite brave and strong, but not overwhelmingly so that it makes her OP. She is very average. For a 16 year old girl, her actions, thoughts all seem apt; especially considering that she was pampered heavily just merely months ago.

Unlike other FLs of the tragedy genre, the events of her life doesn't dull her to the point where she becomes a cold iceberg who can't love, enjoy life, etc. And neither does she become an overnight goddess at money-making, strategy forming, etc. I liked her for that. It was new, it was interesting. It felt more acceptable. (Not like I mind OP FLs.)

I loved the ML. Like, head-over-heels, in love with him. Pining, worshiping, yearning, wanting. I wouldn't have completed this novel, if not for him (and the fact that I didn't want to add more to my DNF list). Every single word, action, thought, expression of his, I adored. The steamy scenes were very steamy because of his unparalleled hotness.

My only issue was the fact that his leg gets fixed. But he is an CN ML— it's expected.

This is an heavy plot: betrayal, conspiracies, assassinations, etc. But it's only 99 chapters. So you can presume how much the author really squeezed everything together. The author is very good at writing slice of life romance, but meets short at political intrigue and plot dense stories.

I really couldn't associate with the villains. Nor could I empathize with the disadvantaged characters. As I said, every character other than the ML and FL are very 2D.

This novel is not bad, but it's not that great either. Considering the fact that novels are all just mind-numbing junk, this is even more junk-y. It's not worth the while if you are coming for a masterpiece in the likes of Eastern Palace.

It's perfectly bit-sized to waste your time. <<less

I read this firstly because of the Male lead's name😅. Second, I was curious. This is a rare novel where the FL suffers and wants revenge but doesn't die and be reborn, regress or transmigrate to be able to achieve that. So far, this was a really good read. Although I would have liked it more if the author took time to write how each side characters ended up in their happy ending and not just explain it in a 1-2 sentences.

I loved this so much! If you want a story with an OTP that is always cuddling and communicating and reassuring one another, this is it. My teeth almost fell out of my head they were so sweet. And the make-outs are *chef's kiss*

Also, the ML is crazy. But in a healthy way. Like he respects the FL and burns down an entire mountain after she catches Malaria from a mosquito on there.

Not to mention the mu*der hedgehogs.

This is reaallyy good

The story is mainly romance rather than politic.

Both MC dan ML have been betrayed and badly hurt, so they have cold personality and not easy to trust people.

... more>> They both smart, but have low EQ. Combined with their past trauma, there are a lot of misunderstanding between them, even until the end. But they slowly try to communicate and opened up, it's so sweet and beautiful

Yes the ending is a little bit simplified, but again, it's not about the politic, its about their journey to heal each other <<less

Dropped about halfway through. The supposedly cold-hearted ML starts falling for the FL pretty early on without much reason to. I also found the characters too inconsistent. ML is sometimes mind-readerly perceptive, and yet constantly prone to misunderstandings with the FL. Meanwhile the FL is either ruthless or naively kind-hearted depending on what’s needed for the plot. I wanted to like it but I honestly just got tired of the back and forth misunderstandings.

This is not Mango approved.

A seemingly stereotypical series with a cold male lead with a childhood of trauma, and a female lead who is calculative yet closed off. The male lead has a disability with his legs, but hey! They can be cured whenever he wants, no problemo! The female lead has literally seen her country collapse and has steeled her heart, but hey! For most of the crucial chapters, she simply keeps on crying! The relationship is indeed very heartwarming, but with no real side characters and main... more>> characters who might as well be from any other similar series, this one just managed to stay aloat. The will-they-wont-they aspect of the romance stays onscreen for too long, considering how cliche that entire line is. However, the main leads do get enough time to make an impression on us with regards to their internal conflicts.

The author has given it a nice happy ending, though that was never in doubt. Expect nothing when you go in and you may enjoy some angsty romcom. But expect nothing more. Strategies? Tricks? Martial arts? For a period novel, there is a surprising absence of such. All in all, a series that is at just the right length to tempt someone who is simply looking to binge for the weekend. <<less

If you gave this novel less than 5 stars, we might have been reading the different novel. MC is a kind person but she can be "cruel" to those who did something bad to her and her loved ones which is understandable considering what happened with her family and her own country. She knows herself that she should not hesitate when it comes to her enemies and that made it more realistic to me. Our ML has also suffered a lot to the point he doesnt trust anyone not even... more>> our MC (who ofc lied to him a couple of times for survival purposes).

There are a lot of misunderstands, yes. But they often get solved very quickly. I have read a lot of romance novels for the last 20 years of my life but this novel is one of those novels that made me cry every chapter because I just want the ML and MC to finally be happy and realize that they too deserve happiness for everything they went through.

(P.S Don't trust the person who gave 3 stars review of this novel. The misunderstandings werent even that bad and again, they were always resolved rather quickly. This novel is so wholesome and its worth to read.) <<less

It’s a great novel that stands out because of its strong, but believable and flawed FL. Both the FL and ML have emotional depth, and the romance is compelling and spicy, while at the same time they ACTUALLY COMMUNICATE and make a great team.

I love this novel, 10/10 don’t miss this!!

I almost didn’t pick this up because a previous review said the translation was bad, but the one I read here on NU is quite good.

Not much politics or face-slapping. It’s moving along at a slow pace as the heroine works on dealing with her foes, with the eventual assistance of the ML. It is a bit on the slow side, but it’s not s*upid, so if you want to read something on a lazy afternoon, this might be a good option.

Honestly its kinda good overall but the vibes I was getting was a bit... eh. Like I know the plot is kinda good but there's something about it that makes me feel bummed when reading it, I keep on leaving the chaps, it couldn't hold my attention span.

The romance is pretty cute and cliche, but the situations waved between fluff and serious, so maybe that's why its a bit eh. There's unnecessary scenes as to propel them feelings towards each other which I think could've been done in a better... more>> and possibly less dramatic way lol. Anyway, not good for a fluff read, read only when you're up for something mid serious <<less

This was a very well written story. The translation is very high quality too, some sentences/scenes felt like poetry. I wasn't expecting much going into this, but this exceeded my expectations.

What I liked:

  • Both our MC and our ML come with heavy emotional baggage. They are complex and complicated. I like how their relationship begins as an act, shifts into a dance between pretense and reality, and eventually ends in love. The struggle between love and revenge is heartfelt and believable.
  • Interesting cast of characters - while some of the antagonists were quite one-dimensional and boring, the supporting characters have interesting stories as well. Since this novel is quite short (96 chapters), it's to be expected.
  • This wasn't a reincarnation / second life revenge novel. Instead, the MC has to fight for revenge in the present with no cheats / golden fingers.
  • Not everything is spelled out for the reader. Some things are cleverly hinted about and you have to think a little bit to make sense of it.
What I didn't like:

  • Huo Xu...I know he's the antagonist, being the scum "ex" but I didn't really understand him as a character.
  • Spoiler

The use of the term "baby" is weird, given that this is a historical novel. It felt out of place.

Sooo... I liked how it started, there's drama and a painful past (obviously) that marked the characters and each is trying to overcome it in their own way. But in the second half I just felt disconnected. The main characters go through internal struggles, the old love versus hate, feelings versus duty but the writing felt kinda flat to me. I didn't feel the emotions they were trying to portray, it just felt muddled and stagnant?

Also there were a few kinda unrealistic moments.

Spoiler

-The male lead is almost omniscient, has secret passages in every house in the capital and knows what anyone is having for breakfast but doesn't do anything besides killing a few guys? I expected some more intrigue and elaborate scheming.

-Also this is the most wheelchair friendly story I've ever read in ancient setting. The ML literally pops in from anywhere in his JADE wheelchair. Inns, secret passages, enemy houses, hot springs and even buddhist temples on top of mountains, you name it. Full accessibility.

This got good premise but I don't know why I got bored when I usually liked this kind of plot. I felt that the author wanted to give readers a lot of dog foods... but I think some of leads' interaction felt forced tho. They got their own way to support each other... but both lacked EQ & frustrating to see them boxed their thoughts and feelings.

FL (Le Zhi) was a former princess from subjugated country with her happy family being destroyed... She got flaws and her every move got... more>> own motive. I understood her wanting to revenge and confused feelings for ML (Huo Du) as enemy's son... but sometimes I don't really get her. She got huge mood swings, stubborn and often irrational plus overthinking creating unnecessary dramas & numerous pity party. ML really got patience for her that he can support her decisions or readily backed her up. ML is actually a good to FL despite being understandably cold at first.

On positive note, FL was aware of her flaws and even got her own boundaries... even dirtied her hands instead of ordering others.

Honestly, I'm cheering more on supporting characters like Shen Qingyan and the sub-couple An Xuan and Jing Xi. <<less

MC somehow changed into a crybaby. She cried a lot for some different reasons and honestly, it became a bit irritating over time. Also, she kept playing a push and pull game towards ML until near the end. I somehow understand ML's feeling of wanting to just die rather than being tormented by her like that.

[collapse]

And the ending, although it's a happy ending but there's some things that disappointed me a bit.

Spoiler
  • The emperor and empress died just like that? The empress somehow could poison the emperor for a long time but with the emperor's shrewdness and empress's lousy scheme, how could he not aware of that?
  • I understand that MC and ML wanted to live a free life away from political struggle but I still didn't like their decision to throw the throne to an 8 yo child. Come on, let the poor kid had a happy childhood a little longer.

Translator made edit so everything is ok now. As for story it's really good. I read 52 chapters without being bored. Can't say their romance is slow, it's just right in my opinion. They married, for few days they learn about each other, they flirt and then they fall in love. Hou Du is a bit crazy? Well he enjoys torture people, but for his time, I guess he actually quite reasonable? Although Le Zhi hates smell of blood, more kindhearted thanks to her family (all of them was sweethearts)... more>> she the one with very good memory, and not soft for her enemies, smart and they quit good couple in the end, very harmonious, after communicating for little bit. <<less

FL is always crying, always pulling back and it ends up feeling cruel the way she behaves. Author has her seemingly resolute that she will see the love till the end but then she will pull back, it’s frustrating, especially coupled with the crying.

is unrealistic and a let down. These two leave an 8 yr old orphan as emperor and swan off to live a mediocre life and that too one in which ML is a doctor, chef, confectioner, maid, housekeeper, babysitter of the FL and the primary care of their kids. No seriously he’s doing all of that, whilst she cries, plays and stands at her shop sometimes. It’s maddening and s*upid to show these two who felt the responsibility of their births and their families situations, to behave like this and not actually be the Emperor and Empress and sort out their country.

Spoiler

Plot

(don't read if you don't want to spoil the story since it's too detailed)

Spoiler

The plot is exactly like explained in the summary.

The female lead, Le Zhi, a naive and lovely princess of the righteous and pacifist country Li was betrothed to Huo Xi, the villain and third prince of the violent and warlike country Qi. Huo Xi was held hostage in female lead's country, country Li, to assure the peace between all the countries.

He was received and treated with love in Country Li, but ended up betraying them in the name of his birth country, the belligerent Country Qi.

Because of the villain's love for female lead, she was held hostage in country Qi. But she didn't marry the villain that loved her. She actually was used as a chess pawn by the villain and Emperor, the villain's father to scheme against the male lead.

So female lead was betrothed to the male lead and Crown Prince, Huo Du, the cold, crippled and crazy prince of Country Qi.

Everything that female lead wanted was to avenge her family and country (aka kill the villain third prince Huo Xi, the general Yang Heng and the Country Qi's Emperor, the father of the villain) So she made everything to become ally with male lead, the Crown Prince.

They didn't trust each other and were only using each other in the beginning, but they ended up falling in love, getting their revenge and happily staying together. The End.

[collapse]

So this novel is definitely a must for those who love strong female leads and cute psychopaths male leads.

I said cute psychopath because...

Spoiler

... male lead Huo Du was crazy and kinda borderline (addicted to danger and self destructive), but maybe he was cold in the beginning, but soon he becomes a pool of sweetness... of course, sweetness mixed with mischievousness... I loved all the pranks he prepared for female lead.

He was definitely different of all those scumbags male leads that we all know about and can find in various Chinese novels, that are extremely cold, have women and children left and right with a huge harem, that humiliate and sometimes even r*pe the female leads and in the end are easily forgiven.

So, the male lead in this novel was crazily cute and perfect, loving only one person (aka without a harem) and very respectful and considerate especially in relation to s*x (aka not r*pe at all, just two people consenting and loving each other)

But don't worry, despite the novel being really sweet, the main couple are romantic without any trace of cheesiness. It's really the opposite it's really fresh, like a breeze of fresh air, a light breeze that scratch your heart and makes you giggle.

[collapse]

I also really like the strong female lead Le Zhi...

Spoiler

... I said strong not because she was a fierce martial artist or a general leading an army. Her strength was different, she was mentally strong and determined. She matured from a spoiled and naive princess to a courageous and fierce young woman, that understood that to get revenge you need to have the courage to gamble with your life. And she gambled a lot and in various situations.

I also loved how sometimes she takes the initiative to sleep with him. It's also so refreshing that the novel shows how young woman also have those kind of desires and can also enjoy s*x, the exactly opposite of various female leads in other Chinese novels that always cry and never want to sleep with the male leads almost sounding like they don't have any pleasure and always needs to be forced or coaxed to have s*x.

But of course she wasn't perfect, she cries a lot, but not to the point of becoming too annoying, and her resistance to put down her walls to trust and love male lead took too long, and almost took his life. Because male lead was willing to die and give everything to her, including his heart and life.

[collapse]

Now about the villain Huo Xu...

Spoiler

... he was a person that was capable to love, but that would put his greedy for power first, and what is even worse is that he wasn't even smart enough to be able to scheme and win the power that he so much desire...

But his greedy was bigger than his love, and after being swallowed by it he started spiraling down and down... losing himself in lust and violence.

I know he was a rapist scumbag... but I still feel a little sorry for him in the end...

... when he noticed too late, that everything was worthless without love and without the person that you love by your side...

Zhizhi, I really want to, really want to start all over again (that was his last wish after losing everything and seeing her for the last time)

I think his story is a reminder for us to always cherish love...

[collapse]

Cute moments

(Don't read if you want to have the surprise and cuteness in the story)

Spoiler

Female lead got a dangerous illness that could ended up in death... male lead was trying really hard to make her survive...

Spoiler

She laughed despite the excruciating pain and said:

"Let's play a game of say the opposite, just say what you want to say in the opposite."

"Then I will go first, Your Highness is really ugly."

"You're so s*upid."

"Actually, I'm not afraid at all."

And then he said:

"I won't be with you all the time."

During the night, thinking that he was sleeping and that she was going to die, she whispered:

"Meeting you makes me really unhappy... I'm not reluctant to part with you.I don't like you at all."

A long time later, he said:

"I can live without you."

[collapse]

In another part on the novel, female lead was very conflicted when she killed people for the first time in order to get her revenge. She ended up having a nightmare. When she woke up, she confessed to male lead:

Spoiler

"Has Your Highness ever heard of the legend of God of Good Deeds of Great Li?"

He answered:

"I've heard some." He lied. 🤣

She kept going:

"When I was a child, my father told me that since the founding of Great Li, the Le clan has believed in the God of Good Deeds. Because the ancestors of the Le clan were always kind and generous to others. After they passed away, they turned into the God of Good Deeds in Heaven, blessing the Le clan and the people of Great Li. Do you know? In Great Li, the doors of every household are not locked at night, and the neighbors are like close relatives and friends. The people live and work in peace, stealing and cheating rarely occur, and the evil act of killing has never happened before."

"Because the people of Great Li know that if their hands are stained with blood, it will be difficult to obtain protection from the God of Good Deeds, so no one dares to kill people."

"But just now, I dreamed of my deceased imperial mother, and she said... She said that my hands were full of blood. I won't be able to see them after I die."

He answered:

"You will be able to meet them."

"For the descendants of the Huo clan, after they married a wife or husband their fate will be connected to each other. We can transfer each the sins of the other party to ourselves, and we can also transfer the blessing of our own to the other party."

"So all the five people that you killed today can be transferred to me."

He thought;

Whatever you are afraid of, I will take care of it for you.

Then she asked suspiciously:

"Is it true or fake?"

He thought:

Of course is fake. 🤣

Then, he said:

"Don't believe it?"

"All right then take it back."

She whispered:

"No... "

"But if turns to Your Highness, then you... won't you ho to... "

He sneered:

"Go to hell?"

"I have killed countless people. It makes no difference between five more or five less."

Then she agreed and nodded:

"Then... thank you."

He froze, glanced at her without speaking and thought:

His little fox really has no conscience and is so heartless, ah. 🤣

The translation is excellent.

Pros:

    • Complex main characters. There are no Mary Sue's or Gary Stu's here.
    • ML isn't r*pey. He is devoted and loyal. He knows MC does bad things, but loves her just the way she is. You'll love what he does at the end. He is by far more developed than the MC.
    • Suspenseful story. This was a page turner, and something exciting happened every chapter.
    • Author put a new spin on several well-used plot devices and tropes. The plot twists at the end were great
    • Few plot holes
    • Sweet and satisfying end
Cons:

    • The narrative is centered around the romance between the CP. Normally, this would be great, except nothing really happened. You just see the relationship progress and nothing else happens. Boy meets girl. They fall in love. The end. Usually there's something in the middle that endangers the relationship. Maybe it's a love rival or outside threat. This was supposed to be an enemies to lovers story, but they got over the enemy part fairly quickly. I mean, the MC was suspicious of the ML but not on the level that one might think, given the circumstances. That's why it didn't work for me.
    • Villains were pretty one- dimensional. The only interesting one was the emperor. This is a minor point, since the relationship was the main focus-- not court intrigue.
    • You might not know what's going on unless you are familiar with the tropes. For example: Warning! Big spoiler here about the ending:
      Spoiler

      At the end,
person A killed Person B by committing su*cide. This is a trope where one person is poisoned, possibly with a gu bug. The poisoner ingest the "mama" gu bug that controls the victim. If the poisoner and the "mama" gu bug dies, the victim also dies. It's something like that. I don't pretend to be an expert.

This novel is definitely a nice and easy read with its heartwarming love tale intertwined with political intrigue. Yet, it's not all sunshine and roses. Some may find the political intrigue a tad underwhelming. While the twists are thrilling, there were moments when the plot felt a bit too contrived.
