Zhang Xiao Qiang is a nobody in this apocalyptic world with danger lurking everywhere, he is forced to wander around and learn the rules and principles to survive. Over the course of time, Zhang Xiao Qiang’s character and laziness slowly wore away from the experiences he faces. Zhang Xiao Qiang becomes more resilient, of course also gaining power whilst watching the lunatics of the apocalypse trampling on everything they could trample on. Zhang Xiao Qiang always maintained a bit of conscience in him. He never had the thoughts of being a hero, yet he doesn’t mind sharing bread from his plate. Zhang Xiao Qiang will continue to live in the cracks of the apocalyptic world until the crack can no longer hold him.

Zhang Xiao Qiang motto is: “Don’t talk to me about human rights, Don’t talk to me about the laws, Don’t talk to me about favors!”

Note: ‘Xiao Qiang’ is slang for ‘cockroach’ but is also the name of the main character.

The story started off great with a good character's setting. (It's nice to see a protagonist develops through battles and isn't omnipotent, walking library, he-who-sees-all-knows-all.)

The world is described in details, as well as the monsters, zombies and people. There isn't much to say about this part because it's good as it is.

But later on, our protagonist became a huge disappointment for me.

Spoiler

At first (when he wasn't strong enough yet), he kept saying that his dream is to marry a good woman and live a happy, relaxing life. But guess what, later, when he was powerful enough, he started treating helpless, useless in battle women like an inferior species as if their life's whole purpose was to be s*ave for men. When he used the excuse "World has gone to shit, everyone must do their part, and women's is to serve the man.", I have to ask our protagonist this: housewives are caretaker of the family, would their fate be also s*ave as well? A s*ave that can be abused and humiliated whenever the husband, the male want?

Haha. Pathetic.

Anyone who has that kind of thought, just as a reminder, think about what is your mother, sisters, grandmother's gender first.

I swear, the ideology of the old generations in Asia just makes my ass itch endlessly. No one is born superior, and no gender or race is better than the others. I really do feel pity for the ones who still think like that. They are just simply pathetic.

I was expecting a person that reincarnated into c*ckroach in zombie filled world. What I found was The Walking Dead, Chinese ver. Quality wise this is your standard zombie apocalypse story, but other animal beside human also slowly got infected by the virus. The human zombie were able to evolve and gain brighter strength/agility, while several animal zombie were shown to have magic like ability. Nowadays there's a lot more zombie novel that also have mutated animal and plants but in Apocalypse c*ckroach the animal... more>> really play a role. <<less

After reading the raws out of desperation, all I can say is that it is worth the read. It’s hella good. There is a lot more emotionally impacting scenes than in typical stories that make you go “Aw sh*t. That’s pretty f–ked up.” Then you proceed to curl up and cry. And we are not talking the cliché people loose their inhibitions and become morons, you see real despair. Its more like you suddenly GET that it’s the apocalypse. The pressure piles on and the heart grows tired, kind of thing. There are moving scenes that will make you feel intense feelz. Its not all about becoming the strongest just because its survival of the fittest. The MC develops throughout the story several reasons for struggling like a damn roach, that is well worth it.

Edit: I really hope someone picks this up T.T

This series needs a "Mature" tag as there are quite a few instances of s*xual activities.

Grammar: 2/5
Writing: 3/5
Story: 3~4/5

The grammar isn't the best, but it is good enough to get you into the story which is saying something (mostly that they need a good editor and proofreader, but also that there is a bit of skill behind the translation). The writing style of the author starts off fairly bland, almost report like and eventually evolves into an actual story (about 6 or so chapters in). The story itself... more>> is not extraordinary, but it is fairly well done for what it is. What allows the star rating to bypass the actual grading is the author's ability to make what the MC does feel realistic. I applaud the efforts of the author to bring us a glimpse into his apocalyptic world and can't wait for more. <<less

Reminds me of "my girlfriend is a zombie" without the zombie mind control.
Spoiler

Animals seem to be the fastest at evolving and the most powerful as they eat zombies to evolve and gain psychic/magical abilities. Zombies are in the second as they need humans to evolve and also the rain. Lastly is humans that evolve extremely slowly with the risk of getting infected. This is due to them needing the infected water but in small dosages. Also, their evolution is only quick healing with maybe increase in strength and speed but it is not a significant increase as of yet. Also they require a lot of food if they get hurt and are recovering.

Pretty generic post-apocalypse novel. This story doesn't really have anything that stands out, but it's not terrible I guess. It's fairly slow compared to others of its type and if you're looking for an overpowered MC that tramples everything (like the MCs from GDW/TW/etc) this probably isn't for you (this MC has very low presence). Similarly, if you're put off by gross things you might want to avoid this.

Spoiler

In particular there's a few scenes involving the MC's dirty smelly foot being l**ked and s**ked and that was pretty fcking disgusting

Not the best start but tge more I read the better it becomes. Please, go through first 4-5 chapters: they are really needed for the plot but rather boring if you look on them from outside.

This is a good story so far (possibly it becomes worse later but...) : humorous, has moral and plot, character growth is not just in his abilities but psychologicaly he becomes wiser and more grown up.

I see a lot of people dissing his personality change, but I feel like that should be a normal occurrence for apocalypse situations no? In such a setting, you got to be prepared for some change and adaption. At least I don't feel it's as drastic as Yue Zhong from god and devil world.

I for one, love zombie apocalypse novels, especially more 'realistic' ones. By that I mean ones that take a route that would be proabable, given the state our world is currently at. I won't say this is... more>> exactly it, but it is among the few I can find like that. On another note, does anyone know more novels like this?

As for the plot, end goal, world building type crud, I am just a common layman. I don't worry too much nor would I understand as much on that aspect. As long as I find it interesting and available then I'll take it. It started out really slow but is beginning to pick up a bit. Although at the point I'm at right now, the MC is indeed still a lost headless fly with no real idea of what he really wants or where he wants to end up. That doesn't worry me too much unless he is like that until the end.

While on the translation side, the grammar, sentence structures, and vocab choice do indeed need working on, what do you expect from translating as a pastime without an official editor and/or proofreaders. The current translator is doing their best given the current resources they have. I have seen quite a lot of new translators drop some novels I like due to rl matters or not enough support. I do hope this one now can gather some more supporters or even just casual readers, and eventually build up a team. Quality would pick up then.

Well I know I am a poor novel analyst and even that might be overstating it. This is all coming from a casual reader only looking for a decent and understandable read. I hope no one gets randomly offended somehow and starts flaming me for some random odd reason. It happens and to be honest doesn't bother me much (you'd only be pegged as a weirdo in my book). <<less

Starts out very strong. The MC is not Generic by any means. The pace of the story is slow, tense and still funny. Unfortunately around chapter 50-60 when the MC and his first companion meet more people, the MC's personality changes drastically and the story begins to fall apart at a pace visible between paragraphs. Wouldn't recommend to others. I liked it better when it had been dropped by its first group because then at least I thought it was a grade A golden masterpiece that would never see the... more>> light of day, unfortunately it turned out to be shiny garbage. <<less

I really liked the beginning and most of the rest....

but somewhere along the way the MC has a personality switch that I can't understand nor accept. Once he gets some experience he become way too arrogant and starts treating weaker people like shit. He forgets his origins. Although he does bring it up.... he still doesn't fix his attitude.

i guess it's I could still accept it but then he tries to Justify every single one of his actions and that pisses me off. Also there's no consistency in how he... more>> treats the women.... sometimes as animals/s*aves sometimes as other men.... depends on his mood. <<less

Honestly, this novel is.... not great?

It certainly has its good parts and I'll be honest that my motivation behind starting to read it was almost entirely on the R18 tag.

Another reviewer had said that it's similar to 'My girlfriend is a Zombie' and it is very similar in the world, world building, specials but the focus here isn't on someone that had a 'happy relationship', all you need to do is take away all the personal relationships (pre and after disaster) in 'MGIAZ' and you'll end up with something similar... more>> to this novel probably.

The main character, well honestly I don't like him, he's an a**hole. Sometimes it's good to have a character that lets you feel some sort of emotion towards them but with the acts this guy has done. I don't like him and if I was in a similar I'd honestly try to reign him to be my lackey instead of the main character.

As others have pointed out, he doesn't take care to remember his weak origins, he'll bring it up saying that someone will remind him of how he once was, but he doesn't attempt to pick up the people and help them a long the way to getting stronger, it's fine to be selfish but there's a limit.

His relationship with the girls is rather pathetic, I'm not far along so I'm not sure who sticks around and who goes but the two main ones should be Yang Ke'er and Yuan Yi.

Ke'er is the first one he meets and bothers to get to know, their relationship is somewhat cemented at the start and it's fine. She's alittle young so having her character be rather basic is fine/sensible but MC's treatment of her is pathetic, he uses her as s*ave labour majority of the time and their interactions are incredibly mundane.

Spoiler

I was rather disappointed with how MC handled Ke'er taking his knife before he fought hand to hand with the S2, he nearly died and says nothing about the teenage girl that took his knife because it looked cool or something? wtf? He acts as an 'alpha' to other women but here, he's beyond 'beta'.

[collapse]

His time with Yuan Yi is the worst, honestly.
I get what he did with her and can understand it, her metamorphosis is weird and doesn't make much sense but that's another issue.
Her first interactions with the MC are terrible, they remain terrible with MC straight up saying "I don't like you" to her several times.
Spoiler

His big reason for not liking her? She's taller than him. She's 1.7m and he's 1.68m. That's what he decided and it's honestly pathetic, so so pathetic. Writer, please give us a different reason than height, I'd even take racist reasons.

[collapse]

Their interactions with MC in this book, well it'd be 6/10 if this were the only book I was considering. If I'm reviewing in terms of other books, it's 2/10 at best.

The plot.... What plot? There's no plot so far, it's just the story of MC surviving and going places in China after a zombie apocalypse.
It's like the writer saw 'The Walking Dead' and decided that a zombie survival novel about the survivors would be fun to write as I'm getting 'TWD farmhouse' vibes from the story.
There's no direction, no idea why things are happening, no attempting to discover things. The MC is being passive to the story, he's just letting it happen around him instead of directing it. That's fine at the start but so far MC is the only one that has any sort of 'survival skills' so if he's not going to drive the story forward, is it only the author forcing events onto the MC the whole book?

The writing, is this the authors first novel? The random shifts between third and first person are odd if they're not a translator thing.
I could talk in length about the writing style, as it's something that can be opinionated but I read 'Otherworldly Evil Monarch' before this and that also had random poems/songs, it was done much much better than anything in this.

The adult side of things, meh. It's there, somethings are talked about, some shitty situations are described or left to your imagination but MC ruins it for me, I personally find MC is such a little bit*h inregards to the women situation.
He has power, sh*t tons of food&weapons&supplies&hideouts&vehicles, he has capability and he talks about only trusting women, that's fine.
What does he do when he meets a woman who he finds attractive, usually tries to work out what she can do for him in a fighting capacity.

There's no taking women under his wing, not just to increase a harem but to repopulate, to fill out the ranks etc.
The unfortunate fact is that attractive women in this novel don't enjoy good treatment, that's fine its an apocalypse, but does MC stop to think that maybe these attractive women have areas they're good in that aren't related to fighting? They're also women who can give you children, they're also attractive which will slowly disappear as society collapses more.

So I'm disappointed, you have the resources, power and capability, own it you 'righteous lustful idiot'.

He has plenty of adult times with a few women,
Spoiler

mostly just a BJ, he has 2-4 's*aves' but he doesn't touch them, it's like he's sexist and 'upright' but then also pathetically s*upid and childish at the same time. Oh and there's alot of foot fetish stuff along with comments about unclean feet, I think author has a foot fetish.

[collapse]

I got upto the chapter I did and decided, "I don't really want to read a shitty Chinese The Walking Dead clone that doesn't even have fun fantasy/scifi elements".
I don't want to read about the bad relationships, all the s*upid people, the s*upid decisions and the MC who think's he is great but still a massive 'p**sy'.

'My girlfriend is a Zombie' and 'God and Devil world' share similarities and are much better to the point I read.

3/10 on Characters

1/10 on Plot

3/10 on writing

2/10 on r18

-1/10 on likeable MC. <<less

Chinese resident evil where mc's figure out how to gain powers. The problem is, there is no end goal. Thus, there is no evolution of the story. Thus, where the translaters stopped translating, series fatigue was starting to set in.

Simply put, the series is spinning its wheels.

It's boring, there isn't special event happening, there is some but I find them boring, and a lot of time I found the writing confusing especially in describing locations and sometimes in fights. And the MC is most of the time negatively thinking witch makes him unlikable for me. So I couldn't read it straight, I stopped many time to take my breath, then returned later hoping it gets immersive as the apocalypse theme is my favorite. But unfortunately that didn't happen.

Spoiler

for the sake of a loner plot at the start the author didn't make any survivor out of the 8 floor building that MC lives in nor even the surrounding, he is the only survivor of the area. The only few that he saw, were ate by the zombies right away, well it's possible but find it boring and lame, 20 chapter about a negative MC alone is so monotonous, and suffocating for me

[collapse]

that being said, I still think that the story is progressing reasonably, and there some action there (witch wasn't to my liking), and if you bare to transcend the loner part you might find something good afterward, I don't know, try it for yourself it might be that the problems that I described are due to taste preferences, as you can see people who likes it are more. <<less

I like the premise and the amount of effort put into explaining a lot of things.

I can't say I care for the fact that despite the effort put into detail, many important details are instead lost.

This may be more because the novel is poorly displayed through machine translation but at many points the author makes things very awkward, hard to immerse oneself in, and even downright confusing at times through jumps in circumstance or location.

The characters are frequently believable and lifelike, which is commendable... you know, whenever they simply aren't... more>> of course...
Spoiler

like half the women the author paid note to at least

[collapse]

I liked most of it, but it's all just a bit too static. Slow. Detail is a good thing right? The author uses it more as a weapon to draw out the chapters, which is better than just slapping in an inbred twat to sh*t on things like some authors or simply repeating themselves over and over and over and over, but it is also hard to comfortably skip over----something practice would fix but I'm not inclined to learn that knack for this one novels way of doing things.

So in summary it's good when you ignore certain questions and it's commendable when it decides to be reasonably paced but the rest of the time it's more of a slog... shouldn't have to slog through imo so I stopped reading here <<less

As far as apocalypse novel goes, this novel is good. It is not perfect but First this is about apocalypse where chaos reign and bad things are new normal and bring the worst and the best out of people. I finished reading this novel with machine translated. (Looking forward to read nice translation, again) and the impression I got is The image of a man who survived the apocalypse proudly.

MC is a nice guy but not shiny white knight. I can say the way he deal with people where the... more>> world goes to sh*t is reasonable. MC character is super complicated, only after reading to the end of the novel and slow think about him you will see some in sight on his ways. He is mature and his intelligence and wisdom will make do (not op intelligence lol), but like some normal dude trying hard to survive wisdom.

In the start of the novel, he watched a c*ckroach and gain insight from that. So his principle is survival and he tried hard not to lost to much of his humanity in the process of his goal. You see in a world where might make right, he behave like ok guy. Don't let other sh*t on his head too. He treat his loved one very good in that kind of world. In my understanding MC afraid he might lose his loved one so he choose wisely who he give his heart to (real cool chicks not just vase) and if by some chance not so strong woman become his, he make sure they have a chance at survival.

Theme - survival and author make it's a good ride.

+ for not losing his humanity, literally and figuratively,

another + in my book for not being s*upidly good guy,

+ for being cool family man, (even through he is hard to get along, he tried his best, lol)

+ for good side characters (not too much 2D, they have their own agenda)
Cockroach you tried hard, respect man.

the ending is good,

Spoiler

I can see MC sitting under the sun with his and Mingyue daughter on lapse. Eyes fill with The desolateness (because of hardship of apocalypse) and happiness (he is with his loved one now), sadness (missing for Mingyue).
