Douluo Dalu is perhaps one of my favourite LN's. It's definitely in the top 5

The characters are so near to my heart. I've been through the struggles with Shrek 7 for at least 3 times already (another reread on the horizon soon. Note: couldn't get into the manhua at all- perhaps because I read the LN and watched the tv series a first, so the manhua fell way short by comparison)

I absolutely adore Tang San. I love his dedication to Xiao Wu. He remains, to this day, one... more>> of my favourite protagonists. Yes, he is a bit OP, but its all because of his extremely hard work, smarts, and calm mind. This MC works sooooooo hard.

I love the relationships, for the most part as well. Had to roll my eyes at the author a few times. They seemed to enjoy sexualizing pre teens a tad too much. I would just skip over the overly descriptive parts when I reread novel.

The power systems is one of the, no, the best power system I've encountered in my reading of LN's so far. Every level is clearly defined, with bases of 10, and each level broken down into 10 sub levels. Rules are clear and rankings are easy to understand.

There are a few loose ends, and the plot becomes...a lot, in the last 1/3, nonetheless, I can mostly ignore these negative points, and it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the novel at all.

I laughed, I cried, oh how I cried (had to take a 3 day break after reading THAT scene for the 1st time). I enjoyed this journey to the fullest <<less

Dropping @ ch278. I have actually been trying to suck it up til this point and been trying to find reason to stick til the end but guess this is my limit.

BUT let me state my impression up until now. I actually like it. I'm not big on wuxia/xianxia novels so I prefer to start my exploration on light stuff with romance in it. First half of the novel focuses heavily on Tang San's development as a Spirit Master. Even though his soul came from another world initially, he's pretty... more>> much blank on relationships and life experiences. So in his 2nd life it's more his experiences and different kinds of relationship. Personally I view the first half of the novel as a journey of a young hero or Tang San's journey to becoming stronger. He works hard, thinks calmly, and uses his brain.

What I like:
*his resilience, strong will, and not being consumed by evil
*the brotherhood/ strong friendship, no underhanded stuff in here
*grandmaster & school elders in general
*power system

What I find ridiculous/what I can't stand: (contains spoiler)
Spoiler

*Tang San is constantly reminded not to show the f*ckng hammer unless it's a life or death situation but come an opportunity with a large audience and tadaaa he reveals the damn hammer bec apparently he wants to win. He's freaking stubborn. Period.
[Btw, all the help he gave his comrades are well deserved bec he's put them constantly in bad and dangerous situations. Like how he revealed his hammer despite knowing that he and the team will be targetted. His stubbornness has put them in unnecessary danger a lot of times. He doesn't want to retreat even tho it's logical, tactical, and safe bec he wants to show off strength. Win. Win. Win. Lol.]

*I'm okay with naming certain powers or moves but to actually say it out loud 🤢 (it's just cringey for me and too shounen feels)
*the romance. It was a gradual development, which I like, BUT come latter part of the novel it suddenly turned into undying, desperate and 'if you die, I'll kill myself' and 'im willing to die to resurrect my lover even though s/he wont be happy' kind of love. I mean, srsly just kill yourself. If you resurrect your lover and die for it then what is s/he gonna do after? Die in self pity? Die in sadness? I can even guess that after that s/he will just commit su*cide bec no one can stand life w/o the other. The way it was becoming just... it's no longer satisfying. It might work for you but for me? Nah
*I'm sorry but I have to say that the way the author resolves the conflict/problems in the latter half is just happening conveniently. It's like 'oh I found something here, it can help me level up and also resurrect my lover and mother, PLUS regenerate someone's limbs! How bout that?' WOW the thing just became all purpose and cures everything. Even depression lol.
*He's too emotional at the latter part. I don't like how he handled the Clear Sky Elders abt Tang Hao's matters. I get that he sympathize bec it's his family but dude, think about it. R u willing to stake the whole sect bec of a genius who's only thinking of protecting his wife? That's a whole ass sect. The Elders weren't even Titled Dulou at that time. The father died and his brother was the one to shoulder the burdens. You can be mad at the spirit hall but I don't agree with being mad at the Clear Sky School for drawing the line with Tang Hao. Even Tang Hao understands it and feels guilty for not handling things better and you just get mad for him bec the sect apparently didn't fight with your father to save your mother while sacrificing everyone. Do you get how that sounds?

[collapse]
I'm dropping it while I still have a good feeling for the most part of it. I did enjoy the journey but the latter part just gave off that lousy feel for me. Give it a try tho. Like I said, the power system here is good, it's just that the romantic development ruined it for me. I can still stand the unreasonable power-ups and road to being an overpowered MC but the way Tang San handled the romance part is meeeeh. <<less

Hands down, this is one of my favorite novels I've read. Too bad it was shorter than the other series of this author. I feel like the author could have explored more from this novel like what he did with the other douluo dalu series. It just feel like it was rushed, especially at the part when they got into Seagod Island.

The story is much more interesting than the other douluo dalu series, I just couldn't bring myself to love the other series as much as I love this novel,... more>> heck I even hated the douluo dalu 2.

I recommend reading this novel, and if you liked it, try reading the other novel as well. <<less

The first chinese novel I’ve ever read, so take this review with a grain of salt, as the feeling of finding a new genre/world will probably affect the score.

That being said, Douluo Dalu is among the best CN I’ve read to date: interesting “cultivation” methods, a fine romance, amazing supporting characters, and a very good plot (at least compared to other chinese novels). I’d say the best thing about this novel is that it is short, weird as it may sound, but it is a good thing because it’s story... more>> doesn’t get convoluted and it looks like the author had a plan from the start.

I’ll say the best things about the novel first: as I stated before, the novel feels like an actual novel, with it’s whole story thought out beforehand. And there’s also my favorite part of this novel, the team, Shrek’s 7 devils, not only did they work as good side characters but when they get together to fight it is the best, until today I’m looking for another novel that has even one teamfight as amazing as every teamfight in Douluo Dalu.

Now some bad stuff in my opinion: it is an isekai/transmigration whatever you want to call it, I hate it, I really do, this tag is enough to make me not read a promising work, fortunately, or for me, unfortunately it is important for the story Tang San’s previous life. Another thing is the ending, not going to spoil anything, but if you read any other chinese cultivation novels you know how the power levels work in the later parts of these novels, it’s just that it feels really out of place in douluo dalu.

Anyway, this is an amazing novel, and probably the best work to recomend to someone who’s never read a chinese novel, it has it’s flaws, but is also so different and well made that even veterans can enjoy this one in my opinion. <<less

This Story starts out well, having read a lot of wuxia/xanxia now I think this probably has the best first 2/3rds of a novel. I like the cultivation system of spirits and the different ways spirits counter each other etc. For me what ruins the story is the inclusion of "gods" the inheritance portion of the story is ridiculous, it takes the MC and his group 200ish chapters to reach rank 50 but then only around 100 chapters to reach rank 100 which it has already been stated should be... more>> more difficult. The MC starts getting constant rank boosts which don't affect his foundation for no apparent reason and even though it is stated that once you reach 95 comprehension is the main driver for levelling there is no mention of him needing to comprehend anything at this level he just continues to rank up by absorbing power. Once he starts to inherit god powers the concept of spirits is essentially thrown out the window, we wait almost an entire novel for him to add rings to his hammer and you never really see him use the abilities. It would have been a more fulfilling read if the MC hadnt used the backdoor method of godhood and had instead levelled both his spirits to divinity through cultivation. Finally the ending is s*upidly rushed and by that point I couldn't wait to finish reading what started off as one of my favourite novels.

5/5 start to the novel 1/5 finish <<less

(This is less of a review and more a retailing of my journey through reading this novel)

I can usually read novels very quickly, sometimes hundreds of chapters a week, but this novel, it took me three years to get through.

Like many others my experience with Douluo Dalu began three years ago with the Manhua, which I thoroughly enjoyed. At the time I wasn’t really into the translated novel scene and had only read a few, so when I got word that the novel version had much more detail... more>> then the manhua, and I had caught up with the manhua translation, I jumped on it quickly. Even though I knew most of the plot I still read from the beginning, and boy was I glad I did, the extra detail made the story really come to life. I ate the story up but could read it very much as I had a lot going on. Once I got to ch 330 after a much longer time that I should have the translation stoped, I waited a while (didn’t want to read crappy MTL) and it eventually escaped my mind. After all this time I finally remembered it and came back to see that the last 6 chapters had been translated, and I finally got to the end.

It was a emotional ride, much more emotional then many of the novels I have read, and I throughly enjoyed it. The main romance is one of favorites out of any novel and the sad part really made me feel sad along with the characters.

Spoiler

the part where Tang San makes the grass ring is my favorite part of the romance

[collapse]

all in all, I love this novel and the characters within it and recommend to any who might read this (I also recommend child of light, even though it’s a bit amateurish it a very fun red) <<less

This was the first web novel I ever read. I'm not sure how much of it could be considered generic or standard when compared to other similar novels, because for me, this novel was very new and original. As a result of that, my review of this novel is probably skewed. I do however know, that this series is absolutely worth reading. I really think this is one of those novels where you know whether to read through it, or not, after the first 10 chapters.

I liked this novel but a fair amount of short coming

The world building was alright, I just feel like that it wasn't put into good use, in the end the MC go to 4/5 places again and again and even if we get to be told that this world is big, it just doesn't feel like it, I just feel like that there is a forest, one country and an ocean with an isle.

I see that a lot of people enjoy the fight, I personnaly don't, when there is 5... more>> chapters of fighting explaining every techniques and such and that this fight doesn't even amount to much in the end, it's just overdone. When there is no emotion, stake in a fight, why must the author still drag on with it? Why not put the effort into something more meaningfull?

The relations between the characters at first was fine, they each had their own character developpement, they grow up and became "brothers" but after this point, not much is to be said, the author CONSTANTLY says that they would die for each other, that if one brother take a risk, the rest follows and so on, it's alright to say this sort of thing once to make it clear what sort of relations they have with each other, but saying it again and again that's just cheesy and lazy writings.

The end is rushed awfully, the main cast spend 200 chapter to get to lvl 10 to lvl 50, but then rush all the way to max level is 100 chapters when the author keep telling us that the higher the level, the more difficult it is to gain level. And we also get a romance that build up constantly in the novel, quite a lot of things to wrap up as well, but nope the novel end right after the final fight, not even an epilogue. Very frustrating, and it was the same with heavenly jewel change (from the same author), will it kill the author to give some closure? <<less

Good story, there were a lot of elements involved but it never strayed from the main plot. The ending felt a bit hurried, for me, and sort of weak. I felt like it could have been better but it still works. I binged read this because I didn't have the heart to do so otherwise. It's one of those stories that gets you hooked because something, no matter how small, always happen.

I like how the characters developed and how they grew together as a whole and as individuals. There are... more>> some parts that the story could have done without but still, every moment was worth the read. I also love how the main was so pure but not to the extent of being 'saint' like (I am a sucker for one true pair so I might be a bit biased).

Anyhow, all in all this was a good read. It was interesting and the story was well thought out I didn't have any problem diving deep into this world at all. I would definitely read the other stories as well.",) <<less

This can be regarded as generic/reference novel. There is a lot of checked box in list of how to write novel correctly. Joke (most of it dirty), drama, characters development, antagonist, world building, politics, romance, etc. A complete package in a book. All of those making this an easy read and good introduction for beginner given that they can bear with wall-of-text-explanations (world building and rule) in some part of the stories and they don't hate forced plot armor, OP & Too Lucky MC, the usual CN style. IMO,... more>> this is not perfect, like overused sappy drama and abrupt-new-forced-romance to drive the story kinda stale after a while and battles on later half of the story are arse pulling. Also, there are some interesting parts that aren't expanded and get skipped instead.

This must be read in order, DD, DD2, DD2.5 and DD3 or you will miss a lot of references like world building or politics and you will also get massively spoiled. <<less

A good story that takes the traditional reincarnation into a magical world and shifts it just enough to be called fairly-original. Found the main character's (MC) backstory to be fairly pointless, but the intrigue and backstory of the MC's father to be quite fascinating. The relationships between the MC and close friends/classmates were believable and interesting, as well as how they progressed even after a time-skip.

Only thing that I had trouble with was the names, but that usually happens with Chinese light novels (LN) so if you're use to that... more>> this LN should be good. <<less

Doulou Dalu is one of my favorite novels, ranking in the top 3. It's well written, well planned and well executed. The powers of the MC and his group are detailed and explained thoroughly but not so much that it overwhelmes you. It's very interesting and the other characters don't just fade away in the story, and it really keeps u wanting more. Overall, it's one of the best novels in novel updates. The translators did an excellent job at explaining the novel and kudos to the author for creating... more>> this wonderful and intriguing novel that continues to excite and entertain me. One of the best and unique Xianxia story here – with cool MC who isn’t crazy and isn’t hipocryte. And also side characters – you can feel that they are alive, they are not just random pawns without personality. And one of the most important things – there is romance. Not typical Wuxia/xianxia harem romance where girls love MC just becouse he is strong etc. BUT cool romance – MC doesn’t drolls to each encountered girl, he stick with one and he is willing to sacrifice himself for her

this thing is addictive.

the tags should include "spiritual battles". I was also put off at 1st because of the lack of magic, but I just see the battle system they have as a more sublime, a bit less elemental type of magic. and it's honestly wonderful. it should also include 'martial arts'. if the abilities he brought over from his last world weren't in that category, idk how else to clasify them.

either way, I'm no literary expert, and english is not my native language, but this story truly made me... more>> forget I was reading a novel in my phone, I was succesfully drawn into the douluo continent, and the characters do seem alive, like when you are watching a high quality action anime or reading an incredible manga, or even when reading an excelent western fantasy novel.

what I love the most, is our MC never forgetting who he is, unlike some other reincarnated MCs, who instantly dwelve into their new personas in order to survive, but don't recollect or feel any emotion towards their past, or to whom their new world is very strange to them and it takes them a lot of suffering to integrate with it. Tang San truly takes this new chance in life, treasuring it, never forgetting what's important for him, in the past and now. that's a very rich character development which adds weight and depth to him. the same applies to the other characters, which grow in you and make you love them, imperfect and human as they are, making you perceive them as true people and not just a mob of words included there in order to make the MC not being alone. each one has more than just the capability of feeling anger, sadness, contemp, happiness, greed, envy or love. they feel gratitude, respect, inferiority or superiority, curiosity, fraternity, family love, doubts, etc.

i read up to ch 186 "in one go" (took me several days xD), so I didn' t find the pacing slow. I guess it's actually written to be read that way, volume by volume. however, this is a true path towards OPness (that is, it's half a cheat path towards being the strongest and half a training past to support that OPness), and as such, somethings that might deterr your reading appear: slow age progression, training, training, training, training (it's cool in my opinion xD), deus ex machina, extreme OPness, and some archs are looooong. however, as I said before, I read the whole 186 chs as fast as I could, and enjoyed every single tiny bit of every training and deus ex machina moment. heck, if it takes suspicious miracles to save or aid the characters i've come to love, i'll back you up, author. thumbs-up.

however, later on the feels nearly kill me. oooh those feels!! the romance, the side characters, the sadness. at one point I felt like there was someone smearing my phone with onion juice, my eyes just didn't stop being waterfalls... but maybe it was just me xD I'm a girl, blame me.

uhm, the chapters are pretty long, but I love those cooool battlessss.

and I think I said everything I wanted to say. have a good read. <<less

An absolutely amazing novel. This novel is for those who like "stories". Where there is an actual story throughout the novel, which may be arguable as to what I mean by story. Also, TJSS's stories have a great quality most novels lack: Character Development for people other than MC and the girls. This story reminds me so much of a manga because it has character development. Also, not only does it develop the characters, it goes in more detail about them. Even the ranking system doesn't seem to be the... more>> main focus unlike many novels where growing stronger is the point. The characters do grow stronger, and it can be argued that their growth could be rushed at certain times, but the focus of the story is actually about what is going on in Doulou Dalu.
The think most people hate about DD is the infodumps that TJSS forces upon you, but those people are haters since the infodumps aren't enough to make it horrible. <<less

I agree with all of previous 5/5 rating reviews. The author carefully built a new world where all characters are fleshed out well, be it protagonist, antagonist, or passer-by. We as the readers get to follow how the protagonist grow up and become OP with hard work and plenty of supports from people around him. The romance is heart-breaking, the sacrifices are heart-warming, and the conflicts are real significant matters.

Having caught up to the translations I can safely say that this is one of the best web novels I have ever read. It is head and shoulders above other xianxia in character development, world building, romance, action and abilities. Only place where it would not be on top would be comedy.

The story is extremely well paced, each chapter leaves you with the desire to continue reading.

Great characters who are all memorable and unique.

... more>> Best part is that it only gets better and better as it goes on.

If you haven’t read it yet please do, I cannot reccomend it enough. <<less
