What she cared about was that she could use these skills to make money and not worry about clothes and food. Growing precious flowers and plants, embroidering beautiful mountains and rivers, and enjoying the simple life.

If you don't mind reading a novel that some characters have broken three views, then read this.

I finished reading the raws, awhile ago. The story is quite long but most chapters are really unnecessary, it is all fillers to make the story have variety of short arcs.

What I didn't like about it is the part where ... more>>
Spoiler

Ji Yunyun got rebirth or when she got to know about her original ending. I didn't expect that she will turn bad, I hope that she will change, even before her rebirth, her character is so tr*shy.

this just makes my blood boil.

I am very happy for the other characters and all, they got their lives changed and now so happy.

Some parts of the story can't be understand by normal human thinking.
Spoiler

Like when Lao Zhang accepting Jianyun as a god-son after meeting once???

[collapse]

But over-all I like it, t, it has its own charm as a rebirth to the times like 80'ish.

Disclaimer; this is just my opinion based on what I read. It has its own pros and cons. If you think this book is worth it- then read it. <<less

An absolutely cliche, Mary Sue novel... but one that’s very written well enough. You know this story. You know every beat, you know what will happen, and even if you didn’t there’s no tension, but it’s still enjoyable. It’s a fun read instead of a slog to get through, it flows well, it has a good translation, and sits easy in the brain.

It’s like junk food. Yes it’s bad for you, and yes the bones of this novel are bad, but the packaging and the flavour are spot on. Sometimes... more>> you want to curl up with a bowl of chips, and if that’s your mood this one seems to be worth the figurative calories. <<less

The beginning of the story is really good. I read up to chapter 300+ without skipping a chapter. But I coutake it anymore.

This author has one FATAL flaw. It is the same with their orher story "Back to the sixties to farm". In my opinion, this author doesn't know how to write good female side characters.

Everyone you meet in the story either follow the MC and prosper or be jealous. Nothing else. You never see a man like this in the author's story it will always be a problematic woman.... more>> After reading BTTSTF and after reaching around chapter 200 of this one I just started to think that the author has something against women in general with the way they write them. I'm not even a woman myself but damn I felt like I should be offended.

Anyways I got so fed up with the writing and character development, like out of no where the mother in law becomes an antagonist, made no sense and was so s*upid, soured the already mediocre story even more. So I started skipping and only reading chapters with interesting titles.

And one more funny thing is that I think the author really likes sons cause bruh in both this story and BTTS the main character has 3 boys <<less

I've read 200 chapters and I don't understand what can be stretched for another 500. A lot of water. This writing can be cut at least twice, it will only get better.
I understand that the female character builds life and relationships in the family based on the upbringing of his time, and in the outback it does not even cause dissonance, because in the wilderness, and even in a closed society, and even such a bone as the village, mores change at times slower than in cities. But. The... more>> eighties. This is just a strong scrapping of a large part of the way of life. The eighties in China are very similar to post-revolutionary Russia, which became the USSR. (by the way, it is interesting that in China, the country of victorious socialism, the system of state free education and free medicine is much less developed than in Russia, as far as I know... I am shocked, there is a "medical policy" in Russia, in the presence of which you can cure your teeth for free or almost for free!!!.. when my cousin was in the Israeli army, he went to the hospital, because you can't let a free army doctor near living people...) OK. The eighties of China - birth control, industrial boom, recovery of the country after famine and war, large migrations of young people across the country. The heroine should be in a stupor from the difference in the way of life in the city and the village, plus a bunch of things ALIEN to her consciousness - the same technique. All the nonsense with the "spiritual source" is trite and boring cheating. The embroidery skill was used at the very beginning and abandoned. And the calm attitude of others to how much a person's behavior has changed overnight... three times HA! This is complete nonsense.

I feel like an Incomparable Cucumber, but - squeeze out the water and throw away the mud! <<less

It's annoying me the MC was just so submissive. When she's bullied by those people didn't like her, she'll accompanied them or give things to them. Sheyet.. What did she said in early chapter like "she won't give any to her sister-in-law" then what the hell was that? When her sister-in-law what some meat or eggs, she gives, if wanted some fruits, she gives, then wanted money, she give. Then if someone bullied or had been taking advantage from her, she didn't even told her husband or In-laws, she just... more>> let herself bullied. That what such a sucks.. It's annoying to hell. MC acting so hypocrite, what I like was if it's hate, then hate. If it's like, then you like. Not something like this. Not acting like some saint.

I'm gonna drop it. Even though I like to continue reading it but with this kind of MC it will be a waste. <<less

(2nd Reread) I just wrote up a long-ass review and it got deleted DX. Oh well, what can you do. Let me just say that the first time I read this, I read the first 150 chapters and gave it a 3 star rating directly. My impression has not changed, even if I read it till the end this time (well, by the end, I mean reading up to c200s or so and skipping/skimming the rest). As for the rating, I decided to stick to 3 stars, but... more>> more specifically, 3.35/5! Not quite enough to level up to 4 stars, but it's still not a bad rating.

_________

SUMMARY: This is not really a story of an FL and ML. The main protagonists are not the focus, but literally just getting rich in the eighties --- with a transmigrator from ancient times (the FL) and a hardworking retired soldier (the ML) as background characters to support the development. I initially thought the a transmigrator from ancient times was pretty interesting, but the FL's lack of ambition made her too passive as a character. She really didn't do much outside of fixing the relationships with the ML (who had been married to the original owner for three years prior to her transmigration) and her in-laws (who disliked the original owner because she was shrewish and selfish). Afterwards, she was first an embroidery-making machine, then a chemical fertilizer provider XD (her cheat, the spiritual spring), and a baby boy maker (seriously, she was pregnant most of the time. It's the ML that did most of the work, but he doesn't play a part outside of that. So yeah, in short if you want character development, this is not the place to look for it! This is strictly for slice-of-life, pastoral-life, business management, etc.

_________

THOUGHTS: I lost interest after a while because I wasn't really all that fond of the characters. In contrast, BTTS (back to the sixties), the author's other work, was a lot better rounded. I mean, At least there, there was development for the main characters in the beginning. The FL of that novel was also very active, always moving around. Unlike Su Danhong here, who maintains the virtues of an ancient woman very proudly. I mean, I don't dislike her, but it's definitely a bit boring. As for other things, well, after a while, without the MC's propping up the story like they should, it devolved into one petty drama after another, and the poor-to-rich aspect became more and more meaningless. All of this sounds so negative btw XDDD. But, well, I think the story is still worth the read. If you're looking for something casual, and nothing too deep. This is not bad. At least, you can really experience the life of the people back then, even if it may not be the most realistic. <<less

I got fed up chapter chapter 124.

The story drag in so so much, I could not take it anymore. A lof of the character were either too dumb, s*upid or had absolutely no redemption.

What really upset me was the fact that every bad things that happened had to be woman ! Does the author think we are the bringers of discord ??????

I understand how FL was born and raised in a time where woman had little to not right but she was reborn in the 80's and had some of... more>> the borrowed body's memories why is she still acting this submissive ? <<less

Binged the entire book in less than a book. I knew I would enjoy this book because I liked BTTS which is also by the same author. BTTS was better though because the MC played a bigger role in changing her life. The MC here was more passive.

Spoiler

Did not like the writing style though for this book though. The author would drop that something would happen but that would be years down the road, which made the narration seem very detatched. Also, I was waiting for the pay off and retribution experienced by the MIL and fifth daughter but it was so abrupt and the author went into so little detail.

This was an interesting read, I read quite a lot of it, but I just think it's a bit too long. She's already living a great life at chapter 80 so I don't see the point in continuing reading so many chapters. Specially since I've been reading through MTL is just too much of a headache for something that's really not exciting. Don't get me wrong I love slice of life/ farming type of reads but this one in particular feels a little too uneventful. The main character is also... more>> a little but too passive for my taste and there isn't much character development for any of the "villains" they feel pretty s*upid and 2d for me. Not bad, but not good either. <<less

Annoying to read. 2.5. Just go read BTTS by the same author for a way better experience, this kinda sucks major dick.

It's long and the writing has so much water you might as well be in the middle of the Atlantic. It's done in such a repetitive way that it's immensely obvious; by the middle, it makes you feel like 20 chapters could be shortened into 2. What a waste of a wordcount. What a waste of my time.

(And the thing is, I tend to like long novels and... more>> novels about farming, cooking, and business management, and can generally accept some repetition there. So, like, this is really bad on that part, lol.)

I don't have much of an issue with the misogyny from the rural setting, because it's a rural backwater setting. Yes, the slogan goes "woman hold up half of the sky", but it's still a rural setting and it makes sense for people living there to still hold bigoted views.

What's annoying is when it comes from the plot, and not the setting. Does that make sense?

I'll explain it like this.
Spoiler

It's fine if it's a rural backwater setting and all the elderly people still hold views like "married women are tossed out water" or "it's the woman's fault if they can't give birth to sons", because it's reasonable enough for their setting. They aren't going to change the mindset they've grown up with that easily even if feminism and gender equality are getting promulgated alongside socialism. It's fine if cheating/promiscuity has more impact on the female characters and their reputations; after all, society's always been harder on women in that way. It might not be pleasant, but stories don't have to be pleasant, and it fits, yes?

The annoying thing is that the antagonists that have 0 chance of making a turnaround are almost all female, especially the main ones. Ji Yunyun is reborn but does nothing with her life and ends up in the same old pits, despite being given some opportunities to turn it all around. Most of the old shrews (annoying mother-in-laws and female relatives) that cause problems have a bad end: bankruptcy, living badly, disdain from the entire village, or dying alone. A lot of the issues with cheating are blamed on the female characters, which, societally, makes sense, but there are also so many scheming Bad Women that are trying to hitch a cheap, immoral ride. All of these female antagonists tend to just keep digging, and digging, and digging that hole all the way down.

The male antagonists, on the other hand, are mostly given a lot more room in terms of redemption. Their downfalls are also less focused on, when they happen. The two lazy, unreliable bastard relatives to the MC/ML are cajoled/beaten through reform and end up as productive workers. After they become decent workers, they keep it up and don't regress to their old ways. The 4th sister-in-law's elder brother, who cheats with Ji Yunyun and is also a general bastard, gets socially annihilated by his family... but he still winds up with a house and a decent living and a decent son. In contrast? His abandoned ex-wife (who also cheats, but only does so after she finds out he's been cheating repeatedly for ages and has been abandoning their home and 4-or-so-children to give all his money to his mistress, puts up a lot more resistance than him towards the concept, is an ignorant rural housewife/farmer type with very few ways out once she's married a bastard, and at that point is already in an emotionally abusive & wafer-thin marriage) doesn't manage to save up any money and just gets abused into a bad-end by her new partner. The first rich guy that cheats doesn't end up happy, but he chases his ex-wife to the crematorium (unsuccessfully) and doesn't end up in total destitute horror, either.

[collapse]

Basically, bad characters that are given opportunities to change for the better and eventually do so tend to all be male. Bad characters that are given opportunities and waste them repeatedly are almost all female. It's not about the backwards views that they've grown up with in their rural villages; it's about the way the plot makes all the female antagonists so much more spineless and unable to achieve redemption.

Regarding the MC, I can buy her understanding business/personnel management. She's born a proper young lady of a main household large/wealthy enough for servants, the 4 arts, and multiple concubines, and her family probably has a few shops under it; she would've been expected to learn how to manage an equally large household after marriage. I also think it's fine if she wants to portray herself as a housewife or so. The novel, unfortunately, has other really really big problems. <<less

finished the whole thing and I have to agree with xiaoliang's review. It just gets tiring after a while. Im fine with her husband getting the credit because at some point it's acknowledged that her husband and their industries would be nothing without her, she's just lowkey about it. I think it has a lot to do with modesty culture, especially since she grew up as an ancient young lady who was taught to be subservient and modest. But when she has to acknowledge her impact, she does. She just... more>> really dgaf. People could say that she's being treated like a doormat and honestly, she kinda is, but idk she just isnt confrontational (?) objectively though, there's to much build up for very little/badly executed confrontation which, I get, pisses readers off.

anyways, if a woman wants to present herself as a loving housewife then let her. Both her and her husband acknowledge her (superior) contributions to their industries anyway.

so those are the things I can get past, what really got me was the thought that if a woman couldn't find a good husband she'd succumb to prostitution? That was insane and a great leap of whatever logic.
Spoiler

i didn't like that that's how ji yunyun and other inamous women of their village ended up as. Especially for ji yunyun like she's lived a whole other life I really really dont think she'd succumb to a life of prostitution the second time around. She could have rode so many rising industries with her knowledge and capabilities. I'm not convinced.

[collapse]

all in all, it's a 2.2/5. I appreciate the portrayal of a rural life but all the other aspects + the misogyny kinda killed the vibe.

(note: really messy review I just read an mtled novel irdc about grammar and stuff rn) <<less

3.6 Very slice of lifey. The drama and angst were real. The feelings were real. The conclusion was real... disappointing. I don't know what I was expecting, mad face slapping, but it all went down quietly and with no fuss. (I mean come on, the grandma's turn around was out of nowhere. I enjoyed the extras. It answered most of my questions but I really would had liked to know the future of those two poor kids who'd been innocent pawns in that horrible woman's plans.
