I MTLed this but also read the raws.

Firstly, I feel a little misled by the many good ratings this novel has and felt that I needed to leave this review to balance out all the positive ones that have neglected to mention some of the issues with this novel.

About the plot

It's about an MC from a cultivation world who in a tragic fate somehow is transported to a post apocalyptic world. She is pretty new to modern technology and common sense of the world as she tries to live quietly... more>> in a base and but finds herself involved with people that make it impossible for her to hide from the world and live in seclusion. This novel follows her journey to come out of her shell emotionally and to believe in herself as she has never done so before.

About the MC

Probably the most difficult character to read in the novel is the MC. The author writes little tidbits here and there that make me feel empathetic towards her past but at the same time the MC's general apathy for the world makes her a very difficult character to connect with. Probably I see a lot of my past self in her that I find the author's depiction of her lacking. Just because someone has high emotional walls does not mean they are emotionless. The author probably does not understand what it's like to feel constantly defensive against the world and ends up writing a wooden, cold and emotionless character rather than what is in reality someone who has been hurt by her family in the past, lived a very lonely life for a hundred years and doesn't believe in people or want to connect with people. There are ways to deliver this and still draw empathy from the reader. The author just writes a few lines of background and doesn't really go about showing or telling her emotional state making character development very action oriented with a few moments of "epiphany" which I find a bit heavy handed and happening too quickly without much build up at all. MC's interaction with ML is quite artificial and honestly their emotional development is not very believable. There's no reason for her to like ML and plenty of reasons for her to be defensive against him. Her change of heart seems a bit contrived.

About the ML

The ML is a very calculating person who bears a great responsibility to the base he supports. His emotions as of how far I've read have not been dealt with at all. Author does not really give much insight into his character. He calculates MC again and again to try to get her to give more of herself to his cause. It's really manipulative and yet he's decent enough to admit he did all that on purpose. I can't really see why he fell for her but I guess you can chalk it up to love is illogical for the both of them. Honestly the romance is barely lukewarm at this point. I don't feel any emotional depth whatsoever in their interactions.

About the world building

The author did not provide any such world building relying on reader's collective past understanding of apocalyptic novels and cultivation novels to give the world depth. I mean if I had never read any apocalyptic novels, how would I know what the heck crystal core in the head was? It was never defined at all. And or any of the cultivation powers and spiritual roots. How would a reader know about it without having read any? It's very shallow to almost none world building. Not even much to build up the so called radiation that happened 50 years ago and or what starting the apocalypse. It leaves the world feeling very devoid and lacks in a solidity to tether the story. It makes the world, the people, the base and the danger matter less because the world building was almost non existent.

Why I rate this novel only a 3

While I wouldn't say this novel is badly written, It really comes down to the fact that the author leads the plot by the nose with action after action without personality and or much character development, letting only a sparse few moments shine through the slog. There's not enough substance to any character encountered to make me as a reader care about anyone so that even tragedy when it happens has not much weight. The MC could have used a lot more personality and inner thoughts being shown. It's enough that she is cold and wooden to the world but it's not to say she is devoid of emotions on the inside. In the 45 chapters I've read, there are only a few paragraphs truly devoted to her inner thoughts and it's really not enough to convince me to empathize with her rather.

She uses her tragic past as a reason for her wish to live in seclusion but the crux of it is fear. Fear of the world around her, fear of the people who might hurt her or betray her. She's not had good relationships ever and doesn't know what it's like to have people she can trust. She feels inferior because she's been mediocre all her life and believes she's weak once again and uses the past as the reason that she should hide from the world until the world knocks on her door and she can no longer ignore it. She doesn't feel like she's like the people in this world, constantly calling them "Earthling" roughly translated in her mind. There are ways to write this that would have made her more human, than to make her seem like an emotionless robot just like those who criticized her for living at the base on the blood and sacrifice of others. The author did not make her likeable because they could not express her humanity.

I'm sure this novel will have an empowerment arc and all that but I'm so far in and I simply cannot tolerate the way the author writes. There's really so little emotion and care to any character at all honestly it's here are some people and stuff happens. This is simply not my cup of tea but with so many good ratings I assume other people found this novel good and maybe it gets a a lot better later but I'll be damned if I had to read 45 chapters of bland character writing with little to no world building.

TL:DR A very emotionally shallow novel with weak world building, a highly defensive MC, and a manipulative ML. There's enough ratings from others that I'm sure some of you will find this novel a good reading. It's just not for me. <<less

A better title would be "The Cultivator's Slow Life In The Post Apocalypse". It's really a great concept. The MC is a cultivator in a cultivation world, that suddenly finds themselves in a Chinese post apocalypse kind of world and is just looking to live that Japanese slow life/Chinese salted fish life /American Slacker life. The author just makes it all work.

First up, the MC is great. She is OP but just OP enough. She is left with plenty of room for growth both in therms of personality and... more>> power and it's a pleasure to watch her grow. The ML is such a black belly. He is so manipulative rooms darken when he walks in. What's more he really brings out the best in the MC. They are just a joy.

The writing is incredibly lucid and readable for a CNovel. It's just a joy to read and the pages fly by. Both the translation and the MTL are easy reads.

There are some problems. The side characters aren't well developed and mostly are there to Mary Sue up the MC. She also deals with her problems a little too easily. Not from being OP but from the problems being too small.

Bottom Line: It's a fun read, give it a shot. <<less

Satisfied! Very satisfied! I love a queen MC and Gu Fan is an Empress.

I was very dissatisfied with ML for the first while, but when MC faced his challenges and strengthened her own self belief, he began to respect her and eventually put her needs first.

Another good read here, I like the character building of both leads, not too slow or too fast in my opinion.

The MC is not OP at first but eventually OP at the end. Meanwhile, ML is OP from the beginning but his character growth lies in his views and behaviors toward MC.

There's so little of jealousy/ dog blooded moment here, mostly nust face slapping + fighting monster.

The only thing I disliked is that the ending is a bit rush, I still want to know what happen next.

I'm really surprised about the ML at the very end as well. The writer kinda hinted it many times but then distract reader with something else.

I actually read this a while ago.

HIGHLY recommend this one. It's been a while so I don't remember too much unfortunately. But I just know that I loved it.

Also this story does have good character development for everyone. Even the side characters were somewhat memorable.

... more>> Also, there's a tragic scene in the mid to late part of the book where something happens to the base. Oh boy the story was so good and unpredictable. Go read it NOW.

The ending had a nice twist too. The truth of the world and the female protagonist comes to light. So sit back and strap in for a wild ride. <<less

Great novel! The FL is non-typical, and there's a clear character development script. Well, it can't be said that the FL really changes, but she undergoes a comprehensive character evolution of sorts, which is very rare in CN novels (though, I noticed, not as rare in stories that are 60-100 chapters long like this one LMFAO). Paired with the provoking complex characters is a relatively unique take on the apocalypse (this is not a Zombie Apocalypse, but a beast-related Apocalypse where most of the animals on Earth have mutated and... more>> become supernaturals while the humans are forced to hide away in their bases.) The story is short, but the plot is very satisfying and the worldbuilding is relatively comprehensive. SO, the novel really deserves its high rating!

__________

SUMMARY: The FL, Gu Fan, is a low-level cultivator with no determinable talent. However, after falling into an Apocalyptic Earth where there are dangers everywhere, her lackluster five-spiritual roots and her low-level alchemical talent become the beacon of hope for all humans. The heroine of this novel is not your typical heroine, she's not a virg*n mary. Far from it! She's very selfish and self-preserving. Also, she's very self-aware of her capabilities. In this way, her preference for hiding behind strong backers is really unsuitable on a planet where there's a strong sense of collective consciousness. It's thanks to the ML (Lu Ya), that she gets pushed out of her comfort zone and refines her own character.

________

THOUGHTS: I think I already said it all in the introduction LMFAO. But, let me say a bit more! This novel is surprisingly pretty good. It's a bit short and the romance can't be said to be overwhelmingly amazing (though it's still pretty cute), but there's no denying that it feels complete. To provide a comparison for reference, I read a novel with super-fast pacing just yesterday, where everything seems like it's happening in a blink of an eye. This novel is different. Although the story is very short (in my opinion), it feels very long because of the author's handling of pacing and plot development. ANYWAY, all in all, highly recommended! The MTL is also pretty readable (though some names are messed up, as per usual, the readability is still around 75%.)

________

RATING: 4.3/5!!!

I think its current overall rating is very proper. I was tempted to give it a rating that will allow it to round up to five stars directly. BUT, I think I'll wait to do so until the second re-read. Hopefully, the TL will be further along or complete by then and I can enjoy original text style. <<less

Good for a 1 time MTL read. It's relatively short with a happy ending.

My main beef with the story is that it's not very inspiring either emotionally, romantically, plot wise, world building, or character portrayal.

In fact, the FL is extremely timid and cowardly. For a majority of the plot until she gets stronger, she remains stubbornly timid and refused to go near any danger even though it accelerates her cultivation when she does so. For a hundred year old cultivator, her character is a combination of naïve and cowardly at... more>> the same time. Not quite a female heroine that is that likeable.

The romance is pretty low key, it's like nothing, and then a switch turns on towards the end.

While it's interesting that the FL is not some super cultivator who has all sorts skills, and she really is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to cultivation and skill level. As soon as she levels up high enough, her attitude switches.

Overall, both lead characters are very 1 dimensional. It's good that the main leads have a great happy ending, but the story was really mediocre. <<less

Ahh so good!! I hoped it was longer like 1k+ longer and just like After Awakening, I Conquered The Whole World but if it's not interesting just to make it longer. Then I guess up until chapter 68 is the best for this. It can be made longer tho. Although I'm satisfied with this. I loved it <333

I'm in the middle of reading this novel but I can't contain myself to share my thoughts. Just like one of the comments, the novel is shallow. While reading, I cannot help but frown whenever I see how the MC is. The novel seemed to be in the third person point of view between the MC and ML, hence we do not get much of what is going inside of MC's head. I cannot empathize with her and honestly I am not liking her at all. There isn't much in... more>> depth details of everything. I even thought to myself, if the author had written this in a way that I read it throughout in MC's pov then I would have leaned more on her cold and unaffected attitude. It just gives me a bad taste. That's all for now. I'll see if I can grit through it till the end. <<less

A good story. Very rushed at the end and a confusing back story. Turns out, the plot is very cliche. The ML is MC savior in her original world. Not a very surpring thing tbh.

An interesting, short novel. Honestly though the title is misleading. The MC isn't a salted fish, more like a timid person.

The idea for this story is quite novel because it fuses both the apocalypse and cultivation world which is rarely done.

I read the whole thing in like 2 hours and the ending was quite surprising.

Spoiler

I was wondering how the ML and MC's relationship can continue due to one being mortal and the other being able to live longer and the fact the ML has a connection with the cultivation world was very unexpected but at the same it put my anxious heart to rest.

I read this initially because I was craving some Apocalypse RomCom/Immortal realm story. Honestly, FL was such an annoying character with how adamant she is to just protect herself and her own interests are just money and her life. I've gotten too used to proactive or scheming characters that I was initially dissatisfied but my interest still got hooked. I wondered how she would grow as a person and yep, that was nice. I really like how confident she grew under ML's encouragement + her friends were very very supportive.... more>> Kinda sad how she felt inferior again during side stories but of course, our impatient lover boy ML is there to get rid of that lol.

I honestly was able to predict the original identity of ML once it was mentioned in passing so I was not surprised. I was pleasantly amused that his original personality and his personality as Lu Ya are quite different to the point that FL felt that her Lu Ya died lmao (though it's just the same ML, just more shameless and open haha). I've always wondered during their first few meetings as to how they'd get together because their feelings were so subtle and were not explicitly described in the novel until they got together.

Ahhhh~ I loved the story! They are such a good couple and they also had really great friends! Be prepared for a tear or two though but it's not that bad. Also, not much drama since there's barely any villain here, just mostly monsters.

Very nice~ <<less

I like it so much !

The only thing I hate (and luckily author answered the issue nicely) was the moral kidnapping issue. You can't force someone to do some work or to be humanitarian while you don't even know his/her life history. BUT even if you do, it still not good to force someone. Everyone has their own consideration which we cant really understand so please be wise.

Anyway, the overall story was good. The FL was not OP in the beginning because she always feels insecure and worthless. The ML,... more>> well.. The standard CN ML. OP from the beginning then turns to be an obedient dog beside FL.

Not much drama, no conflict of interest, and no face slapping. A truly easy and quite enjoyable read <<less

Look. I think this is a low-key a diamond in the rough/masterpiece. This was written with intention. There was very clearly an outline written for this novel - which is more than what I can say for a lot of other novels. You can tell because it is a relatively short novel - the author had a plan. However bc of that, the only con comes up which is the lack of expressive description to truly root readers into the world. The current writing does the minimum to get us... more>> into it, and in return, we do get a fairly faster paced short novel that never is boring. BTW the EXTRAS ARE MANDATORY READING. You're not getting the full romantic story if you don't read them.

When I say the writing has intention I mean the lead characters and their actions are written to be that way on purpose. How the author makes u feel about them was written on purpose. The character growth is thus written afterwards. This is imo very well written despite that one con. None of the characters are idiots; they are observant in their own right. I really feel the romance in this story. It feels like a good fantasy/apocalypse YA novel outline lol; it's just shorter and less descriptive but more concise.

This is technically fluffy but there a lot of good well written conflicts & themes in this story: maintaining your standards & needs under societal pressure, the idea of societal responsibility & everyone's role, love beyond time/social status, being incredibly good-looking bc it's fun lmao, and the balance of being generous while looking after yourself. It's not deeply written but it's there and I felt it.

It's truly a comfortable read with a romance that feels nice but is also not boring. I would actually recommend this more for soft romance lovers and people who like cultivation novels low-key. It's not like ascending don't disturb in its plot, but the leads here are just as likeable as those leads. Theres also no internalized misogyny as far as I can see either! <<less

A short and sweet read.

The FL doesn't experience many hardships and deals with her obstacles with ease. So there's not much action or suspense and it reads mostly like a slice-of-life. Nonetheless, reading her growing as a person and getting stronger was very enjoyable.

I like that the FL is aware of her shortcomings and weaknesses and always puts herself first. She is cautious and always prioritises her safety. I love that she's not reckless or heroic- it makes it more realistic as she was considered very weak in the cultivation... more>> world. I was also really glad that she ended up telling the ML and her friends where she was originally from.

I admittedly hated the ML at first- he was rude and his cold personality was off-putting. However, he grew on me and I loved how understanding and patient he was with the FL in the end.

Overall a fluffy read that doesn't require much thinking and will leave you happy. <<less

This is a light read novel. I love the character growth of MC from being a weak timid (coward) chicken to a proper cultivator.

I also love the character growth of ML.

Overall, this is a light read feel good novel. Quite realistic on how MC doesn't want to be a hero since she's basically living within her means which at the same time limits her greatly. ML aids MC in breaking that barrier.

Damn the novel is too short. I want more!!

Very easily MTL-able. This has two of my favourite settings- apocalypse and xianxia, all in one novel. Amazing.

I like that MC and ML don't immediately fall in love. Also, MC isn't a saint or goddess and refuses to sacrifice herself or put herself at risk just to save others, which I think it rare. She gets shunned and judged a bit for this however, but it's her life and not theirs to risk, so they can all go to hell. She does still contribute her skills to help people, but... more>> she knows herself and when to draw the line. This puts her in a bit of conflict with the ML initially, who is trying to discover her secrets and get her to help mankind in the fight against the mutated beasts. They are a loggerheads initially, which I loved, and eventually they become friends and see eye to eye. ML is such an ice block face, but he discovers that she has a sweet tooth and is always feeding/bribing her with desserts.

Spoiler

ML is actually the "senior" who rescued her when she was about to be r*ped by one of her sect members, but he is undergoing a tribulation? The MTL wasn't so great at this part, but whatever. Because he is super powerful, so they are able to return back to to their cultivation world. MC actually doesn't want to continue her relationship with ML at this stage, as she doesn't think he is the same person. When he regains his memories and powers and reveals his identity to her, she starts crying and wants her man back because to her, they are not the same. But eventually he breaks down her walls and they do end up together, she joints his sect and they have a son.

I was craving to read a xianxia inspired story these days that has the double cultivation element in because I'm curious about it. So I found this story so I read it and I became intrigue with it and finish through MTL. So this my review about it,

I rated it 4 stars.

*Spoiler Ahead*

First, the story starts by telling that 50 years passed after the 'global radiation' that starts the 'doomsday' which I think normal and they ended it after another 5 decades or more? I'm not sure because I'm... more>> quite confused with the timeline of the story. Also this story is quite different from the 'apocalyptic' and 'doomsday' story I read. In a sense that it's unrealistic to overcome this kind of phenomenon in just duration of 5 years after it started like in another story, atleast it would take decades or century to do so.

Second, since it says that it was 50 years since the start of doomsday then everything (infrastructure, buildings, and many more) that was abandoned for years shouldn't stay intact after all those years especially if it wasn't maintained for 5 decades. I mean atleast it should eroded or destroy because it was possible that earthquake won't happen. Anyways, I wrote this because I notice that there were some building that stay the same for 50 years of being abandoned in the story.

Third, I loved the fact that the author explain the phenomenon in the story like why did the MC transmigrate, and some of tge mysteries unfold throughout the story. Except the 'earthlings' as MC called them having powers.

Lastly, the twist at the end (the fanwai?) I actually am expecting that except that I expected that ML to be transmigrate into the cultivation world instead.

Spoiler
[collapse]

I rated it 4 stars because I'm quite disappointed and sad about what I happened at the ending. Atleast, I am expecting that the one would stay with MC is the ML that is with her all throughout the story and he (and their friends) would come back to his youth in some ways. Also, I expected them to be happy and stay in Earth though. In the end, I understand why the MC act that way when she realized that her savior in the cultivation world and boyfriend in Earth have the same soul and person. I mean they are the same person but there were some things that just differ.

Anyways, this is a memorable story for me. The way the author manipulate the story is amazing. <<less
