Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit su*cide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

First of all, Every chapter = 2-3 normal chapters so currently its like they have 18ch. Its been an amazing read so far, it has a very interesting revenge plot, is translated really well, and it feels very unique.

Edit: CH 8. Welp.. The genre suddenly changed to ecchi and harem, it is a awesome novel translated by amazing people, but I just dont read this genre of novel..

I put off reading this for a long time because the premise sounded a bit too overly complex or edgy. But I'm very glad I decided to pick it up. In the 2-3 weeks it took me to catch up with the raws, I couldn't put it down for a minute. It's rocketed straight up into my top 5 favorite web novels.

For one, there's a lot of basic stuff that many WNs do wrong but that Death Mage does right. Most characters have personality traits and quirks that make them... more>> unique, likable, and memorable, so that even as the cast grows to a huge size, you can still keep track of who's who without much difficulty. It seriously considers the backgrounds and consequences of events, rather than just having everything come together in ways that are convenient for the plot. It has twists that I never saw coming. It even has honest to god proper worldbuilding- something that's important for fantasy novels but that many WNs neglect, instead keeping close to a very vanilla Dragon Quest stereotype. We're commonly treated to stories about the history of the world, or side chapters featuring things from the perspectives of the gods who are looking down at this mess.

The MC's growth in particular is fun to follow, because "growth" for Vandelieu essentially equates to throwing away even more of his humanity. Whereas most MCs would grow stronger by learning a new sword technique or magic spell, when Van finishes a big fight it often results with stuff like him learning to flail his tongue around like a whip, or growing antenna or spider legs or tent**les or what have you.

A lot of these novels will have an arc or two that just really seem to drag, but I haven't hit anything like that in Death Mage. My only regret is that now that I'm caught up with the raws there's no more to binge-read. Upon finishing what's out there my first instinct was to turn around and read through it a second time, something that I've only thought about one or two other series.

If I were to compare it to something, I'd say it's similar to stuff like I Was A Slime When I Reincarnated, or Maou-sama no Machizukuri, where you have the MC building a nation of monsters that is far more advanced and pleasant to live in than any human country, and putting down the forces that come to subjugate it.

You can tell the author's preferences. If you like 2-3 meter tall monstergirl muscle waifus, you'll like this series, because Van gathers an impressive collection of them. I really wish there was a manga version or some fanart. The LN illustrations only cover the first couple arcs, before a lot of the cast is introduced. <<less

I binge read it until I fell ill (my bad).... I wouldn't say it's just that good but it can hook you up making you crave for just one more chapter before bedtime... It's that kinda novel, the story premise is about a very unlucky protagonist whose luck worsens because of a certain dumb God making his second life worse than hell....

But the story is pretty interesting, it's like a typical isekai story but the villain is the MC himself and also some added elements which gives the story more... more>> depth.... Also one of the best things is the game elements like stats growth and skills that just keeps growing in number and also the badass moments of the MC at some points are also worth looking into.

Now I've been seeing ppl complaining about lots of stuff so let me clear them up

1. In his second life MC experiences lots of cruelties that ultimately leads to him swearing revenge on the ppl responsible and after he reincanates second time he experiences a little character growth that leads in slightly altering his objectives.

2. In his third life the MC whose luck is at its worst gets his important connection taken away from him........ Now some people expect him to turn into a mass mu*derer but he only retaliates against "appropriate targets" who are the main culprits. The MC doesn't hesitate to kill people but at the same time keeps his sanity for various reasons.

3. There are people who are complaining about mc's harem sleeping with other dudes..... Let's make one thing clear this novel is for "Mature audience only " that's why there is no "shounen" tag but instead "mature" tag which could also mean the heroine might not be a "virg*n"..... It also means it has a broader and more mature perspective over male female relationships. Besides there are explanations on why it happens that's also a reason why there is no "NTR" tag.... I can understand their feelings since I myself got stumped (bc of all the shounen stuff I read and saw where heroine's v**ginity is only for the mc) but after a few chapters I got used to it....

Also the harem expansion is less romantic but more of a going with the flow but not so bland either.... you'll get your harem cliches here and there....

But the point is it's more than just these and by only reading it yourself that you'll find out what's so good about it.... I might not have been able to give the full perspective of things but do give it a try.... Enjoy your read <<less

Long chapters and we love those, I hope the Translator wont pass out.

first few chapters are a bit dark and down at the bottom. 14 chapters in the story (ghoul nest) starts to pace itself and slow down the tempo without inpacting the quality.

i also saw that the author has started some world building lore and behind the sceens puppetmasters, indicating the world is more "alive" than the usuall WN.

MC being a bit op is still not making him brezze over the setting. For I can say now he will... more>> forever be enemy og someone or something in the grand sceme of things, not like the usuall OP MC that are just bumming arround picking up s*aves like a hobby.

this novel is not up to but getting there, to the standard of fine novels like "the girl who ate a death god" <<less

I've come to read this due to manga adaptation (which is pretty short, I read something like 17 chapters which correspond to like 13 chapters of the novel). I was disappointed a lot, but decided to go on due to reviews here, but as I continued, I realized the reviews here are biased as hell. I don't know if you five-star people have never read a decent novel or what...

I know I only read 47 chapters (I will return to edit if I manage to read on and change my... more>> mind), but I really forced myself to read most of the chapters I did (that is starting since chapter 25-30, somewhere around there, and those chapters are long for a webnovel). Since everyone already listed a bunch of pros of the novel (be they correct or not), I will focus on cons instead. This will be a rant, but I think I'll make you see that it isn't such a great novel as others claim.

The revenge-driven aspect of the protagonist is bullshit. When he has an opportunity to take revenge on the village, it's very half-assed, and like someone mentioned in his/her review, doesn't really hurt the true culprits, and instead harms the innocents more. It's like the author wanted MC to change from vengeful to good, and instead of using a lengthy process where, say, it takes a lot of pleasant interactions and persuasion with side characters and MC mellows down, he just goes and does it. Remember Arifureta? Well, yeah, this feels similar, but way faster.

Also, the protagonist is shallow as hell. Don't get me wrong, the backstory more than excuses it, but it doesn't mean it's interesting to read in the long term, and he doesn't seem to grow at all (unless we're speaking about growing more apathetic). And there are worse aspects of it.

One of those is harem. I won't describe how 1D all of those female characters are, but something else. MC lands in a village of so-called ghouls (just treat them as some sort of long-lived beastmen or hobgoblins, and there'll be little difference) that have no concept of marriage, so they sleep around randomly and see nothing wrong with it. Now, it's perfectly normal if some love interests aren't virg*ns, especially if they are old. However, the author goes way too far:
Spoiler

one of the female ghouls says she wants MC to imp**gnate her, but instead of waiting for MC to grow up (he's a 3 year old, but over 20 mentally since he's reincarnated), she goes and gets done by another guy (who doesn't even appear in the story).

[collapse]

The best part is:
Spoiler

MC is like, sure, I'm cool with it. I don't feel anything for you, but I'm cool with making children with you when I grow up too. Then, he even goes and helps her treat her infertility and become pregnant by this other guy. He's like one of those guys in cuckold p*rn where another guy f*cks his wife in front of him as he reads a newspaper calmly. My God.

Sure, it is okay for her not to wait for him, but why is he so apathetic about it? Why does he agree with her self-centered plans? If I were him, I definitely wouldn't want her with this sort of attitude. Sure, ghouls have the culture of open relationships only, but the protagonist is from modern Japan, so he doesn't. Unless he's from those p*rn movies I mentioned. Damn, like, really?

Some people will come up and act like ret*rds, saying that ghouls' appearance will age until their first pregnancy, so she did it to stop aging. Sure, that's right. However, the protagonist literally has an ability that let's him reverse aging. He can simply rejuvenate her by those 10-15 years she'd have to wait for him to grow up, and voila. The author is a dumbass, and his setting is imperfect, while those readers who happily accept it, no offense, but you may want to train your critical thinking a bit.

... Apparently, the Japanese readers must have told the dumbf*ck author off too because I read in spoilers (was it another review here?) that those ghouls are later being taught about marriage and stuff, so the author must've realized how ret*rded it is (or was under enough pressure from the readers to change it, but the boat has sailed, and this random waifu that wanted mc's children gave birth to a child by that random who didn't even appear).

[collapse]

Also, the author has some fetish for trauma. The protagonist is one thing, but like at least half of female characters in the novel are those who
Spoiler

are r*ped by either goblins or orcs or something. Then they're rescued and they're completely alright soon after, the author only bothered mentioning some mental scars for several chapters, and then the said traumas silently vanish from the story, and those characters are normal afterwards as if they'd never suffered. Moreover, they were also added into the harem, apparently, though spoilers I read on the internet indicate that true harem later consists of three monster girls, and I really can't stress the word monster enough (insect girl, spider girl, and I think tentacle girl).

[collapse]

I swear, there's some heavy netorare fetish on the author's side, and he should treat it at this point. I mean, one of the love interests is even a
Spoiler

lvl100 prostitute lmao

[collapse]
(though she changed her job and race long before meeting mc).

Side characters and the protagonist are shallow in general, and so are their motivations. There was some sense of crisis at first, but then the rest goes smoothly despite the author putting up appearances.
Spoiler

The vampires that came after chapter 40 were randomly defeated by protagonist (with small assistance) despite being introduced as if they were really something, for example.

[collapse]

The side characters' motivations are shallow like I said, and so are the reasons they revolve around the protagonist. If those reasons are even hinted at or stated at all (some seem borderline believable, like how MC is liked by the undead, but the extent to which MC is liked goes way beyond logic).
Spoiler

A good example is one of those vampires I mentioned above, she was the strongest among the group, and should be a challenge for MC, but she just got scared when MC got angry, and he randomly let her off, and she randomly joined his happy little group.

[collapse]
I literally stared at the text I was reading with disbelief, wondering wtf is going on in the author's head.

Something else I appreciated at first but started to despise later on was the way the author likes to explain parts of the setting (eg. the various species and so on) at the bottom after each (?) chapter. It was a bit refreshing and nice that he put in quite a bit of effort, but then I realized it'd have been much better if he explained those things through action/dialogue in the novel...

Anyway, reading this is boring; it just doesn't feel interesting (you know what I'm talking about: the feeling where you just can't stop, and have to read on to see what happens next; this novel doesn't have it at all). It pretty much copies the common favorite concept of Japanese authors: interesting premise with boring execution that just keeps droning on and on after perhaps an interesting start. I wanted to read more because I don't have the custom of writing reviews early, but I was just so infuriated I couldn't hold back. Phew, good rant, I vented well.

By the way, the translator is doing a good job (at least in early chapters). The quality is decent, and he (she?) goes out of his way to explain various stuff to the readers. Good job, translator. <<less

This is an amazing novel with well thought out plot progression and character inspirations. Each character feels real and you understand why they are what they are, even while hating their guts. The main "villain" of the novel is not so much a specific person, but the ideal a select few continue to push like it's the only truth, religion being the great evil if the God running it is incompetent and all that. To address some s*upid previous reviews:

1: The author has a back catalog of chapters that they... more>> are working towards translating since they have a full time job and the donations pay for their spare time that they could be using for themselves and the website that doesn't stick ads in between every other sentence. So if you are entitled and think every translator should translate faster and for free then this novel is not for you.

2: The MC not going on a mu*der rampage like some of the psychopaths in these reviews would. The people posting this most likely would fail any empathy tests. The MC mu*ders those who deserve it, not every Tom, d*ck and Harry who happened to live in the same town or in the same religion. The author and by extension the MC understand the difference between malicious acts and willful ignorance. So yeah, this isn't for you if you want to see a dark anti-hero mu*der everyone even slightly related to their target. It is for you if you like seeing well planned destruction carried out by an anti-hero that cares more about how he does things and damn to anyone else trying to tell him that his morals are wrong cause they don't match theirs.

3: And finally, to the few reviews that read like 100 chapters and seem to think that the author forgot this or that in the story. Not every plot point needs to be mentioned every chapter and every plot point left hanging thus far has been tied up neatly eventually, when the time was right for it to be done, instead of shoe-horning it into the worst spot just to get it out of the way for those lacking an attention span.

So yeah, if you are looking for a brainless set of fun where the MC and the author forget important things all the time, then go read Smartphone or something. (Which I also like, for it's pure ability to let me turn off my brain and enjoy robot on monster action.) <<less

There are a few reviews which mention that this ln starts off with a revenge plot but the author quickly ditches it and the MC turns into the typical goodie two shoes isekai character, a sentiment I disagree with. I think any magnanimity which he shows is a result of him not wanting to hurt those who did not directly hurt him. Those who have hurt him he desires to kill with the rationale that if they're dead they can't hurt him anymore.

Otherwise, this story is one of my favourite... more>> isekai lns, it has very realistic character growth and explains things even when they don't necessarily need an explanation, for example, the author explains that the skill mental corruption is a skill sought out by underworld organizations (as it has the effect of resisting mental attacks) and it often indicates someone is insane. Details like these make the story that much better.

The only nitpick I have about this ln is that the food sections are rather irritating, though they still aren't too long and they're fine to skip. <<less

Alright so this is how I feel about this novel kinda just splurged onto the pages. In fact I even made this account so I could say how I felt about it, because I found the descriptions lacking, so buckle up this is gonna be long. I will try my best to dance around spoilers and be as vague as possible so as not to ruin a moment for anyone while also giving out info I think is needed to understand what I'm saying, but I'll nontheless put it in... more>> spoilers. Also even if I do summarize something I still urge you to read that part, because I gloss over so many important things. This is basically a really long ramble.

I really love how this novel portrays emotions, because it's one of the most realistic displays of emotions I think I've ever seen in a Isekai LN.
Spoiler

A good example of this is when the MC is driven to a vegetative state, and at this point he's gone insane, the author doesn't hold your hand and tell you but when you think about it from the perspective of a normal person he seems quite insane. He escapes from the vegetative state after dying and coming back as an undead being, then destroys the facility he was held in. A team of other reincarnated beings that he knows before he died appear. He is killed by them, because they don't recognize him and just think he's a monster. He ends up in the realm of the god who reincarnated him. He understandably lashes out at the god for screwing him over, but remember he's unstable, so he gets a bit too angry and says he's gonna mu*der everyone who's going to the world he's reincarnating in next and the god. The god reacts by cursing him to the point of where he'll hopefully commit su*cide. Instead he only gets more angry. He reincarnates and gains his memories at 3 months old. Being a baby gives him a lot of time to think over how he got to this point, and like all emotions in life his hatred lessens, more so becoming bitter at his circumstances. He thinks it over and regrets his actions thinking he wasn't really right in the head then. So he doesn't really hate his fellow reincarnators anymore after realizing they didn't recognize him, but he's still pissed at getting shafted by a god. Now you may be thinking what kind of god handles a situation like that, isn't that unreasonable, I thought he was a god? Well you see gods in this all operate and act differently, they are not omnipresent, think greek gods. Some gods lack emotions, some have different perceptions of reality, some are quite human, and some are straight up insane. The god that shafted the MC falls into the category of being really inexperienced with human interaction, and also lacking an understanding of emotions. So when the MC says all that stuff he's like, "Oh he's definitely gonna do that." Instead of just letting the MC cool off or talking him out of it. Anyways so the MC's mom gets burned at the stake for giving birth to him, cause he's a half-vampire (In the place he was born in half-vampires are the most persecuted creatures and equivalent to demonspawn) The town that she was burned in, some old church guy, and a party of adventurers all have a hand in what happens to his mom. So he gets strong and avenges said mom by messing up the walls and farmland of the town instead of killing them all, because he knows that not everyone one there is guilty for persecuting her and his mom wouldn't want him to do that, also that they've sorta been brainwashed by their religion into thinking she was evil. He violently mu*ders the old man cause he's a crazy fanatic, who's a repeat offender for mu*dering people who gave birth to half-vampires and half-vampires with not a chance of his beliefs being changed because they've only been reaffirmed over time. Then with the adventurer party-ha not telling, you'll have to read for that one but trust me it's well done and still going.

[collapse]
Now while you're reading this I bet you had a lot of why's or a that doesn't make sense moment. Now, trust me when I say all of those are answered as you read, are they all answered immediately? No they are not, all things that don't make sense are revealed over time at good points, while not dumping info all at once. It's more like a steady stream you could say. I highly recommend not skipping the side chapters, because they all contain important information and are the main source of understanding any questions you have. If your question hasn't been answered while reading the LN it could end up being a plot pursued later, it could've already been answered, or it was a s*upid question (Don't worry, happens to me too). Moving on to another reason to read this LN. It ties just about any detail I can think of that was mentioned while reading into the story later on leaving no loose ends, it's very good at that to the point where you just sorta marvel at how much the writer thought about the story. I realize I'm kissing the story's ass to an unreasonable degree, but I thought it was just that good, and honestly the beginning plays out arguably generically until around chapter 30. Also I get some people wanted a super revenge fueled MC who lacks any sort of modicum of common sense (like the punisher), and it can be pretty fun and interesting to read at times, but the problem with that is that it's only good for a short time and eventually just becomes comical, it isn't suitable for something like this where the author is trying to make a very long story with an occasionally in depth serious plot, because it'll eventually just seem out of place. Now this isn't to say there aren't moments where the MC doesn't have fits of anger or he's just out of control, it's just that the author doesn't have that be his main trait. Alright I think that's enough rambling, I'm really tired and I've just about forgotten anything else I was gonna say. Plus when I think about it, this was way more for me than it was for others. If you actually read this behemoth of text you're a trooper and I thank you for sticking to it. <<less

Spends superb amount of time adding motivation, and depth via characterisation, fleshing out the 'hero'; creating the perfect background for vengeance, and revenge. And then suddenly, and rather erratically, the entire story seems to forget its entire purpose. What everything was leading up to. Redemption occurs, and he becomes typically Japanese.

What do typical Japanese men incarnate in novels?

WEAKNESS.

Very good and thorough novel.

The World Building and Characters are well built. Chapters are long, Author doesn't leave characters out. Once a new character is introduced they will eventually get a chapter or a section of a chapter to themselves.

One negative is...

There is alot of characters. I find my self forgetting which character are which sometimes.

Disappointing, it starts off with such a strong indicator of what the story would be and then devolves into a little kid territory building and living a pseudo slice of life, which is fine if thats what you want but its not the revenge story it indicated early on, the MC does a complete 180 from the first few chapters and just decides "eh if they leave me alone whatever, I hope I don't have to fight them"

If you're looking for a man vs god revenge story of an OP... more>> anti-hero, look somewhere else.

If you're looking for death march with a much weaker protagonist no interesting side characters and a pseudo-harem with no real romantic element, you've hit the jackpot <<less

It definitely isn't bad, the MC is smart and uses logic to solve his problems, he is a bit OP but he doesn't solely rely on his "cheat-like" ability.
But despite all that, I can't help but feel creeped out. I've read many reincarnation novels, so I've started to take into consideration the "ethics" of the story. I mean, doesn't that feel creepy when your child is a reincarnator with memories of more than 20 years of living ?? It's seriously gross when you think about it. And not only... more>> that; in some stories like this one, they are just born out of someone's womb, which is equal to stealing someone's life, the original owner of the body. I can't focus on the story when the mother tries to show her affection on a totally weird baby, no matter how you view it. And besides the story has nothing new, just generic story about reincarnation and levelling up to become OP, the only merit it has is that the writing style and the story are slightly better than the others. <<less

Here’s a tip for everyone who uses this site simply to look for novels: 90% of the people who write reviews are complete and utter f*ckin’ morons, just don’t look at the reviews here, they’re s*upid. Rather, the review bar is accurate, but all the actual content of the reviews? It’s typically completely inaccurate, find somewhere else to look at reviews about these story’s. (Know that any and everything offense I say from this point on is purely satire)

That said, I will now get onto my own damned review.... more>> The story starts is slow, and I mean genuinely really slow. It’s about a guy who’s lived a lonely life of abuse dying with a whole bunch of other people on a school trip, getting sent to a (intentionally, I must add, since some moron didn’t) incompetent god of reincarnation who’s decided to run and experiment using the current batch of people. He reincarnates them with memories and literal superpowers rather than magic, however, because the mc’s name is fairly common, there is a duplicate name. Combined with our MC staying in the very back of the crowd, he’s completely overlooked and thus, the powers all go to the other guy with the same name, giving him double the power and our MC none, and even takes the mc’s “fortune” or good luck with him, making the mc’s life hell. The only good thing out of this is that the MC is now empty, and thus, has a huge mana capacity. The god, being a total a**hole, just shrugs it off and doesn’t really do anything to fix it, again, that’s intentional, as is proven later in the story many a times. Now then, I will be rapidly summarizing past this point.

To continue on, our main character is first born in a modern day earth copy with an added bit of magic. He is born to a prostitute who sells him off for money to a research facility, and said research facility learns that he has a special attribute called the death attribute. To explain attributes, you have the stereotypical fire, earth, wind, water and life, as well as their variants space, time, and light. This new attribute, death, was entirely undiscovered before, and is actually brought about as a result of the MC not having a fortune, otherwise known as a fate. It made him be born without any of the normal attributes any other human would be born with, so this was more of a filled in void where the attribute should have been. Moving on, due to the experimentation, MC loses control of his body and mind, basically grows up tortured and eventually dies, only to use the death attribute to turn into an undead, escapes for 1.5 seconds before the worlds “hero’s” otherwise known as the other reincarnations, cut him down. This is where the real story starts.

Following all this, our MC once again meets our bastard of a reincarnation god, Rodcorte. Rodcorte is a self centered, incompetent being who only sees living creatures as a means to keep his little reincarnation system going, hence why he’s oblivious to why he pisses people off so much. Anyways, MC, upon getting KO’d again, comes into Rodcorte’s divine realm furious, claiming he’s gonna kill the bastards who killed him the moment he got out, and Rodcorte just makes it worse by being an a**hole. We learn MC is yet again gonna get reincarnated as Rodcorte set the reincarnation to automatical, however, this time it’s in a more medieval world called Lambda, and the others will be following when they die. Rodcorte, deciding our MC is too much of a threat for his violent comments, tells our MC to off himself as quickly as he can when he revives so that Rodcorte can just reincarnate him on earth. MC says f*ck no to that and then the reincarnation goes through.

first true arc coming up! Gonna make these next summary’s quick, short sentences. MC is reincarnated into lambda as a baby half-vampire half dark-elf, one of the species people are most racist towards, basically, everyone’s the KKK towards him, next he finds out what motherly love is like, finds out he can still use death attribute magic, finds out he’s cursed as a additional measure from that bastard god to make him kill himself, so he can’t level up without help and thus he needs undead. Mc’s mother must leave for grocery’s now that he’s a certain age and can’t drink more tiddy milk, Mc’s mother doesn’t come back for about 3 weeks, MC turns his meal, which is a pile of bones at this point, into a sweet mount, he rides the mount to the nearest town and finds out his mother was whipped (not r*ped, just tortured, some f*ckers gotta stop assuming the worst) and then killed. MC, from this point on shall be called Van or Vandeliu, finds her and shoves her in a bone to make sure she doesn’t disappear, swears to get revenge but his mother says killing is bad if they’re innocent and the ones who killed her already skipped town! So, he decided the town needs a little redecorating and shoves a whole bunch of spirits in the walls, farmland and anything important and has them run away with the literal town itself so everyone must move or die. Time to move on! Van has his bone henchmen kill bandits for exp for a while but it turns out this was a dumb move and now Van must run and hide because the magical KKK (the church) is here to K-K-Kill him. He hides for like 3 months in his old, now collapsed cave before setting out on a grand journey, first killing some bandits and adopting some cool ghost, some as armor, one as a carriage, and now it is time to move on. He sets course for a new settlement on the way hears a scream! He’s still got some humanity left so he sets out to find the source and finds a really blue girl, literally, her skin color looks like she’s been dead for weeks yet is still moving, and turns out she’s about to be assaulted by some hunters. He hates people like these after his mother death, so he orders his bone henchmen “off with their heads” and now they’re all dead. Turns out the woman’s a ghoul, a type of “monster” or more specifically, something like Van, a race made from Vida, another god, but this one seems rather nice.

Quick fast forward, Van’s at her village, they like him, turns out his death attribute charms all things undead, and ghouls fall into that category. He learns some no attribute magic from them, something that’s basically just reshaping plain mana, and in return ups their declining birth rates using his death attribute magic.

alright I’ve decided I’m bored of writing this and thus I’m gonna stop here. Whoever read this shitty review this far thanks I guess, though I’m pretty sure you’d have to be insane or bored out of your mind to have actually enjoyed reading this terrible piece of satirical shit. <<less

Plot (5/5)

The plot is, so far, well thought out and has developed well and leaves plenty of wiggle room for the author to manoeuvre. It flies in the face of regular "good guy" archetypes and shows teaches that one's perspective is highly influenced by one's environment. It is interesting and, despite various plot-armoured characters, remains exciting throughout.

Pacing (5/5)

Fortunately, unlike various other isekai stories, the plot doesn't go straight from daily life in a school to endgame war between gods. There is a definitive pace to the series and... more>> the MC and other characters power up in a meaningful amount of times, literally decades which makes more sense than other series where they're reincarnated, overpowered and victorious within a single year. Within this time frame the characters are always looking forward with an objective and we as the reader do feel like we've getting somewhere. Additionally, due to the skill, level, rank and job system we feel the characters getting stronger and more experienced with each passing year, it is both satisfying and realistic within the given universe which makes the story believable.

Characters (3.5/5)

Despite the original tone of negativity and evil that the character begins with, most of the side characters, especially those in the *harem* are pretty interchangeable and most of the negotiation and bargaining to bring people over to the MC's side is done for him and thus colours all of his allies with the same attitude and outlook, making them a little dull. I do like the fact that the characters are all noticeably different in construction and strength however I am never in any doubt that any of these characters will die due to their plot armour which is VERY thick. That said, the motivations of the characters who are in different factions and the reasoning that they follow due to their different motivations and different levels of accessible information are well thought out and developed. I very much like the fact that characters, when presented with the same information can reach different conclusions based on their standpoint, this derives personality and makes characters *human* for the reader.

World-building (5/5)

I am a huge fan of the world-building, descriptions, sheer volume of characters and detail in this series. The fact that the characters don't overcome obstacles due to the "power of friendship/emotions" but due to a thought out plan created in advance is great. Scenes are set and even fantasy elements become believable when explained properly within their own logic.

Translation (5/5)

I have come to realise, after reading other novels that aren't this one that translation plays a huge role in the enjoyment of the story. Poor translation can destroy even the best told stories to the extent where I, as a native English speaker, go from being immersed and staying up late to read chapters, to having no idea what is going on and dropping the series. Although the amount people are paying per chapter seems like quite a lot to translate a few pages, it does appear they are 100% getting their money's worth.

End Result (5/5)

I am fully caught up with the series as of 03/06/2019 and have enjoyed it thoroughly so far, would recommend it to anyone. I do, however, have nervous premonitions about what may happen and my doubts about the characters who, at present, are making some very unreasonable conclusions even from their perspective. However this is subjective as others, especially in the comment/review section are saying the characters should be going further in the opposite direction to where I think they should go. Therefore the only conclusion is that the characters are developed enough to cause division about their true nature which for me is satisfactory. This is one of my first reviews so I may end up regretting giving such high marks at the start however I enjoyed this greatly 5/5. <<less

Amongst the best novels out there.

The MC is legit insane and is twisted beyond belief physically, he comes off physically like an uber edgelord with a heavy case of chunni... but the funny thing is he didn't chose this, it was forced on him and he plays it to the hilt.... unintentionally. That being said, he might look the role but his actions are the antithesis of this (for the most part... like there are instances of being a straightup psycho but it's earned).

BUT this is not the tail of... more>> an edgelord playing out his revenge fantasy! It's the complete opposite.

The MC was divinely screwed over by an incompetent tr*sh of a god (s). Suffered unspeakable acts of cruelty... then reincarnated and forced to do it again by said tr*sh god! Surrounded by the worst of humanity in every instance, you'd think he'd turn into the the perfect edgelord worshiped by revenge p*rn lovers right? Nope, this novel is NOT a tale of vengeance (even thou the MC has probably the best excuse of any isekai MC to do so), this novel is the tale of acceptance and connecting to other people on a fundamental level. Going into details will only spoil all the fun parts :)

In world full of monsters of all stripes and demeanor, the ones who demand the moral high ground accuse the MC of being a twisted monstrosity of a creature, cursed by the gods. The MC does not deny this, he accepts it. Yet... the MC has ten fold more humanity than all those that hate him combined.

TLDR the MC is like an epic level Dexter and lives the core value of transhumanism. A must read. <<less

First, let me address the hate for this novel coming from those who only read a little bit of the story. They call the MC (main character) generic, which is completely incorrect if they actually continued reading into the story. The MC kills a lot of people and a lot of those generic OP characters you see in isekai novels are actually gunning for him because he goes by his own rules.

Now, the pros of this novel are:

  • OP MC
  • MC who isn't easily led around by his nose or controlled by those around him
  • Steady revenge (aka the MC doesn't kill people until he is stronger than them or he hurts them in other ways as a source of revenge)
  • An MC that is cunning and meticulous in not only his revenge but day-to-day life
  • An MC who actually works to become OP rather than ones who just have power
  • An MC who doesn't push his ideology on a boatload of people
  • Battle scenes later that progressively get more and more intense
  • There's a harem (that doesn't all fall in love with him at first sight but actually get to know him more and love him for who he is)
  • Dependable subordinates instead of weak people surrounding the MC
  • Growth (of everyone involved in the novel over time)
  • Chapters are long
  • Translation quality is phenomenal
The Cons:

  • Some parts are a bit slow
  • You have to read the 'side-chapters'. They aren't really side-chapters due to how much influence they have on the novel and the insight it gives to everything going on with the world (s)
  • Despite there being a harem, romance is still not a part of it but there is a good reason why
    Spoiler

The MC is still super young. They are waiting for him to get older and for him to actually have a s*xual interest in them along with a romantic interest. It is explained repeatedly that the reason some really like him is is strength and the way he protects those he cares about. Strength to the girls who fall for him is important and they are also all long-lived girls. Thus, age doesn't really matter to them. They are surrounded by monsters that have kids when they are a year old (goblins) and more and have a different sense of these things than 'people'.

    [collapse]
  • Revenge is slow (but the build-up makes it worth it so is sort of balances out)
  • MC is underestimated a lot, which can be a bit irritating but it gets better over time.
Overall, I love this novel. Give it a chance. The MC isn't generic if you read further and see his slow development and
Spoiler

growing insanity.

Honestly, I must say this isekai novel, like many other isekai novel, start off perfectly, only to gradually turn into something that I decided to drop

And I always keep coming back not to this genre holding expectation that I can find something that at very least make sense...

Okay, if you are reading this review and you are disagree with me, that totally alright, everyone have different tastes and opinions, but I will try to point out why this novel doesn’t live up to how it should be or at least... more>> how it try to be
Very first few chapters in this novel are likely gonna hook you, it started off with potential, you got a so shitty life MC who many will feel sympathy for now he got a chance to reincarnate into another world with cheat abilities and forture... then BOOM, the god mistook his name for another guy and gave all of his power to him. The MC then unfortunately get f*cked up in second life too, living as a guinea pig for a fk 20 years only to be freed and then killed off by his fellow friends from earth, apparently he was very furious that he said to the god that he will killed them all, so the idiot god decide that he was a threat so he even put curses on the MC so he gave up his life on his 3rd life and killed himself, despise this god himself who made no effort to help or give him apologies at all

Okay I understand that this is a plot to set up the story, and I actually don’t mind that much. Now MC born again in his 3rd life with typical caring dark elf single mom who lived in a cave and doesn’t really care that her 6 months son didn’t cry and was too clever for his age, then the author decide to kill her off by a group of strong adventurers and lunatic priest, so he take revenge by turning the village wall into golems and let them ran off, realistically speaking.. this doesn’t make sense at all, if you want revenge, burn the village or kill the people responsible, removed the wall doesn’t make anything better, the guys who suffered are villagers, not the adventurers and priest who came by a few days and left.

And that was the most interesting part of this novel, after that it turn into a harem dreaming story, with overpower MC that make the curse the god put on him useless. He also possessed a unique death attribute magic from his second life that make his life so op with his 100, 000, 000 millions mana that the god even feared him. Apparently the death magic make the people he met became his followers and make them his puppets with no goal but to become his ally, now everyone want to have babies with a 3 years old baby omg

This is how the story progress after chapters 10ish and it will continue like this on and on

Hollow characters, no character development other than the MC sh*t life for the first few chapter, weird conversation, contradiction MC, poor characters thinking and judgement, op and harem MC, unclear MC personality, 2D characters, super s*upid god, so on and on

Incidentally the good things are the world building and world lores, even the characters and common sense are severely lacking, it makes up for it with details game like abilities and systems

The novel isn’t bad but not great either, like how other generic isekai novel should be, it aims at a niche group of people and if you are in this niche please go ahead and read it immediately

But if you read this review and strongly dislike some aspects of the novel then maybe you should find other things to watch/read <<less

Best story telling ever. Best character improvement ever. Some read a few chapters and gave less rating but you need to read it atleast until he gets companions or allies. You even have side stories about the other 100 reincarnated individuals in another world and they are not irrelevant to the protagonist story.

You just have to keep reading. You will definitely love it.

Those who waited for revenge, I can promise you, you'll have some epic revenge plots with new characters as well as old characters as you go along with... more>> the story. <<less

I decided to redo my review explain what is different and unique in this.

The original idea, by the author was to have a story where the main protagonist has multiple lives, and his powers are that of a villain (Hence the title), and this is what we get. When we say that he is in the Villain side we are not saying that he is a super moral character that is being misunderstood as evil, nor some sort of edgy anti-hero, we are talking about a character that went insane,... more>> and clings to his ideas of humanity to remain human, without noticing how abnormal he already is: Walking on the walls? Using tent**les to reach somewhere that he can't with only his height? A constantly emotionless face and monotone voice? All check.

This is not a protagonist that enemies fear because he used some ridiculously overpowered spell to show his strength, or because he looks hideous, this protagonist is one that, the moment the enemy sees him, he is already disturbed, not by some ugliness or power, but by his lack of presence, by his lack of facial expressions even in the middle of a fight, imagine an isekai enemy having to face an horror character, like Sadako, or that weird pale white child from some japanese horror movie.

Now, this is not to say there are no tropes and cliches, although many are played with.

-=-=-=-

Is this a revenge story? Yes it is, however, this is not a revenge story about betrayal, and you may not have noticed it yourself, but this is actually a rare topic.

Most revenge stories make it easy to select the target of revenge because of betrayal: The pretty but evil princess betrayed the super nice protagonist, the party members betrayed the hero, the trusted god betrayed the reincarnator, or the main character found out the king who summoned him/them was the evil guy all along, and the supposed evil guy was actually good all along! But here, we actually have no betrayals, or at least, no relevant ones.

Rodcorte, the god at fault for everything, was never his ally, he told him straight that he wouldn't fix his own mistake? The Priest who killed his mother did so because of the church's laws? Both cases cannot be called betrayals, but at least, they are easy to hate, and shall forever be hated.

But then. we get some in a more of a gray area of reasoning, for example, were the reincarnators in the previous life wrong in having killed the MC, who was a rampaging undead who was killing everybody in his path?

Do they now deserve death for having stopped a natural disaster?

Sure, at first MC was pissed and swore to kill them, but then again, would he have been different if he was in their place? Yes, when he heard that they had appeared, he thought they were coming to rescue him, and in that regard, his expectations were betrayed, but that was all it was.

Of course, it's not to say Van will ever forgive them for having killed him like that, but, do they deserve to be killed? Some (if not most) would argue that's not the case.

-=-=-=-

"Oh, but there is the other guy who STOLE his stuff!". Let's be clear that, nobody knew of the mistake until the protagonist was the last one, the other guy is the one who got double gifts from the problematic god, but the guy himself had no intention of taking something that was not his, in fact, he didn't even knew about the misunderstanding. And of course, the cheats were not his or MC's, but the God's, and he could give it to anyone he wanted, so in this case, he gave double to one guy, and left MC with nothing.

So, you may think it's annoying but, the other person IS innocent.

This is the sort of gray area you will be facing in this story, but don't worry, the author is not being a sadist, even these innocent lucky bastards will have to face their own problems, besides, what's the difference between curse and fortune? Sometimes it can change depending on the POV, right?

-=-=-=-

So, another very used trope in isekai is the "no attachments" protagonist, what this means is: They have no family, they have no home, they have nothing besides what is on themselves, thus, they are free in a free world, they don't have to worry about their family and friends being killed because they don't exist in this new world, thus they have no obvious weakness and can't be manipulated.

This story however is the opposite, the MC's mother is the first one to express him love, yet she dies, so what is his first priority? Revenge? No, it's reviving her, and if he had to chose between killing a revenge target and investigating a new hint to revive her, he will go after the hint. Of course, if there is no hint to help in that regard, and one of those revenge target appears nearby, then hell yeah, TO THE HUNT!.

-=-=-=-

"OK, and the harem! What about them!? I heard he gets NTR'd!"

...

So, the protagonist starts his third life as a toddler, and slowly grows up, in current translated chapters, he is 11 years old, while in current raws he is 13+, so the passage of time is somewhat slow, as such, don't expect the little child to have s*x with adults, much less expect adults to have s*x with a toddler.

However, that does not mean there are no promises, and the first one to ask the MC for his seed later gets pregnant so as to stop her aging (Racial trait), as she is already the oldest looking woman of the tribe, so, some inexperienced readers will say she was NTR'd by some random unnamed guy, and now the MC has "used goods" waiting for him.

Jokes on them, the problem she had was that she couldn't get pregnant, meaning that she had been doing the deed since before MC was even given birth, but she never imp**gnated.

IF you are the type to think that way, do not read this novel.

Anyway, the waifus are varied, some humanoid ones, some half-humanoid ones, some are virg*n, some are not, in fact, the future is promising that not only oyakodon, we are getting a 3 generation mix here (loli-baba, the daughter buff-onee-sama, the granddaughter who is still a baby, but she will join once she grows up.)

And finally, for puritans, the MC's main divine ally is basically someone who had mated with many diverse creatures, giving birth to many children and many new races, meanwhile, one of the main enemies of the story is the one that talks about order and only does that sort of stuff after marriage.

So yeah, virg*n Alda & Chad Vida

-=-=-=-

Now, let's go to the main character: His main characteristic is being unlucky, it's not just a mere trope for lucky pe*vert scenes, his soul literally has no fortune, if he were to bet something by flipping a coin, he would always lose, even if it was a 1 in millions chance.

So, what is his super power? Technically, he got no cheat, but, in this story's concept, the soul that would usually be filled with fortune, affinities and the cheats themselves is now empty, meaning that he is unlucky summed with a ridiculous amount of space that **can** be filled with Mana, but no affinity to use magic either way.

However, in his second life, after being sold by his mother for booze, and taken in by nazi scientists as a unique person that doesn't even have any affinity, which should be impossible, the researchers found something new on him, and made use of it until this Guinea Pig, the protagonist, died, being the first one to die of the Reincarnators, and finding out about the third life.

In his third life, the sole person who loved him was killed in the stakes for being a witch (she gave birth to a vampire's child), and MC goes absolutely insane for that, however, still clinging to humanity. It's not a story about "You want revenge? Then kill the target", as he is the holder of a power of death, and has died 2 times, he is the one that understands the most about death, so, instead of being edgy and childish like some readers seem to expect from a generic story, this is one that also considers the suffering of living as a punishment method.

It however does not mean that he does not kill: He does, and a lot, in fact, he later on starts capturing some targets alive to do many sort of inhuman experiments, not to mention most of those die in the process, all for the sake of understanding more of his powers as he grows from an horror movie cover character into a lovecraftian aberration. <<less

Story is good, but for a character that had 2 horrible life before he is still too soft and naive. He doesn't learn from any of his misfortune and has a lot of flaws. He is leaving behind trails and clues everywhere. Another thing is his weird opinion of how to survive. First he was full of hatred and want to kill those 100 heroes and that God, then he turn cowardly and decided to prevent them try to kill him by using logic to reason with them. I have... more>> no problem with him letting go of his hatred and live a good life, but his thinking is ret*rded. He actually plan to become a noble in society while make sure the human countries doesn't hate him by not breaking the law. Then calmly hunt monster, criminals and bandits. Naive! He live in a world where basically humans are racist against all demi-humans and monsters. S*avery is largely active. There exist a fanatics church and his own kind (vampire) want him dead. Why the hell would he want to try to mix into human society. He is now basically a king among the ghouls and possess a whole city. Instead of trying to hide from society, grow up and amass a large army, he instead want to be a freaking adventurer and have a status to make the heroes no longer be able to kill him. The adventurer guild is more likely to kill him first for being a mix vampire. He is a kid. Cut the root before it grow.

He should just get stronger, create a nation and become stronger than the heroes. That is the best way to survive. Strength is the law. Without it, any law and rules is crap. No nation or guild can offer 100% safety. Only power. <<less
