Inevitably stained by the madness of the battlefield, Walm awakens unusual talents that he never knew he had.

Worn down and mentally strained, Walm struggles to maintain his sense of right and wrong, often resorting to alcohol and tobacco to escape the harshness of his situation.

As the war nears its bitter end in the Highserk Empire, a major disturbance looms, promising to forever alter the destiny of the entire empire.

The story had a great start, the writing is good although I'm unsure of what MC's real motive or goals are. Probably just became stronger and have a successful life.

MC is mindset is nearly the same as Tanya from youjo senki, except for the atheism thing. They are both kinda Workaholics and see killing as part of the job as a soldier (until his eyes became dark and muddy just like the synopsis said, probably depicting his ignorant to the craziness around him).

MC indeed is skillful probably above average if... more>> not talented. The setting is that he was a soldier of a country that has based on military and expansion ideology, so expect many wars and battles. <<less

Read the latest chapter

Rating 3.8 - 4.0

The MC now lack 'life' as opposed to the first few chapters and I cant see where the story is going.

Yes it is aimless, but not destructive at all. No bad, and not amazing, but still an acceptable read.

Spoilers for myself:

For real, spoilers incoming

War between MC country H and 4 country alliance

4 country alliance send heros and killed Mc's squat

MC revived for some reason and destroy the almost-winning-4-country-alliance from the back

kidnapped the healing hero, ayame

some things happen and gotten a bit closer to ayame (friendship/fellowship)

Demon tide with dragon, giant worm and demon army attacks the H country

MC almost dies, ayame transplant demon king eye into MC

MC sacrifice himself

after MC wakes up from the giant worm stomach, H country is dead, everyone dies and turn into undead

half crazy, half suffering from the rejection of his demon eye (no special power) MC drunk himself away for a year

becomes mercenary to fund himself to cure his eye

kills someone important in the war

travel by the sea, meets kraken

go to dungeon and conquer it to find magic plant

the brother of the 'someone he killed in war' is a noble and wants him killed

conquers the dungeon with 4 other people

war or demon tide happen

saved the adventurer group member by giving them the plant

H country is not completely destroyed, someone important went to MC and invite him back, ayame is alive

MC brother is alive but have family in 4-c-alliance

4-c-alliance Prime minister ask him to recruit MC or kill MC

Current chapter, MC gotten news brother wants to meet him and will meet next chapter

[collapse]

I just cant describe all emotion MC went through, not suddenly forgetting his sorrows and turn into a new person but just like a more realistic person, dead emotion with occasional smile and sorrow, but mostly dead emotion <<less

Decent novel, you can ignore some of the bad points others mentioned because they simply have no understanding about that. There is r*pe in the novel but not that much taking into account that it's a medieval setting and it depicts war (r*pe was extremely common in our history and even encouraged by commanders to both boost morale and also to reward soldiers, thats not taking into account the emotions and urges war/near death and brutal close combat brings.) Another criticism they point out is why he chose... more>> to be a soldier. Simply your lord or recruiting officer came and took you, it was very common for a long time to conscript people, so unless your rich and can bribe yourself out or valuable enought to not be recruited. And as for why he didn't stop being soldier or run away or why can he do that, humans can adapt to many things that are uncomfortable or even loony if you look from aside. And even nowadays there are people who join and stay in the army because they have nothing else or too afraid to try it.

It is a relatively slow novel but good a good one, I have high hopes for it. <<less

The tagline I'd give this story is "Imagine following a story from the point of view of a soldier from the Final Fantasy Empire". His faction aren't "the good guys" but they aren't bad guys either. They are a small country who has been fighting non-stop for a generation, and every time a conflict is done, another seems to come up. It reminds me of the Rome Republic, in how they seemingly get trapped in an endless cycle of wars which all feel like they are being done in self... more>> defense.

Our main character, a reincarnation, isn't insanely talented or strong by any means. He's the son of a farmer drafted into the war who finds he has some talent for fighting. He doesn't enjoy it, but he doesn't shirk from it either. This is a man thrown by the current of his time, and dragged by it. As he fights he starts to grow the relationships with all the people around him, people who in any other novel would be nameless soldiers, just cannon fodder. Over time, our main character obtains a skill, and steps into the path of becoming one of the strong of this world.

I'm looking forward to whatever comes next out of this novel. Give it a shot! <<less

3.5,

it's an alright story overall especially the first few chapters, though I wish there was a section that showed his life pre-war in the new world, as we just get thrown into the battlefield as soon as he dies, this wasn't so bad because the action was well written as was his inner monologue, both had lots of visceral description and conveyed the author's interest in the story.

however, the story really went downhill after he learned magic, if it's so easy to learn magic why aren't all the soldiers... more>> taught it, minor plot point aside, the thing that kills the story for me is how it suddenly becomes an op power fantasy, he learns 1 ability and then all the cool descriptive writing goes out the window, the synopsis is kinda a lie because of this, he doenst slowly earn skills and build himself into a warrior like the manga 'kingdom' no he gets access to special magic that's so op that he can kill 1000 soldiers on his own even though he only learned magic a month ago.]

its just kinda disappointing, but saying that its a bad story would be a lie. <<less

Damn you moneng85 I knew it was spoiler but I didnt expect that many

Okay uh im sold I like chapters 1-32 they were great had more substance and felt they were going places fun to read lots of expectations chapter 33 and now im stan this is great phenomenal even it feels the first time I read ln all over again uh yeah pretty good minor issues but im literally every thing has an issue or two 4.8/5 not going to round up since 5 stars are for godlike, perfect,... more>> fits my taste exactly, just the novel.

This is better than 85% of all novels here without assuming your taste as in just its quality and if you like war stuff if you like the saga of Tanya, probably overlord two but their arent any pararels besides being well written, I fyou like intrigu8ing protagonists this is for you if want a fill in this is me power fantasy thingy this isnt for you if characters dying is turn off this isnt for you since I mean its war setting characters will get killed, if you dont like skills or magic then no good for you. I like this story cause what if instead of the MC being the political machine strategy guy and good at fighting what if he was pawn?? I mean thats kinda cool really novel even and really feels fresh it's honestly plain old good not bad uh id write a thesis statement and the such but this isnt exactly completely translated so just take my word I guess

looked at the reviews and I cant think of one reasonable reason to rate 1 star since for a novel to be one star it has to be god awful in every aspect and frankly thats wrong since 1 and 2 star reviews mean that novel lacks some sort climbing action cartharsis basically cant be called a story or is missing stuff that makes a story readable and platable I can understad 3-5 based on preference but 2-1 stars just no <<less

This novel is amazing for what it is.

There is no end goal, it's a travel, it's a true adventure.

There is no great purpose waiting for you in the end, but there is an action filled rollercoaster of emotions on the way there.

... more>> MC is lost, he wakes up to fight, march and fight again, each time losing those dear to him and unable to break this cycle of constant tragedy.

But why struggle, knowing there is no end goal and everything is meaningless in the end no matter how much you try? You might ask.

It is because that is exactly what being alive is; you struggle and fight even though you know it's impossible. <<less

There are not enough words to fully describe how good this novel is.

It is not your typical Isekai/otherworld strory. It's dark and gritty, yet warm and heartfelt, I've never read a novel that portrays the duality of humanity so well.

The topics of life, death, purpose, and dreams are really well written and delved to in depth through many different perspectives.

The author has really put time and effort into fleshing out the world, making the fantasy world seem quite real, Walm is strong, yet weak at the same time, he's not... more>> so overpowered to the point it becomes unrelatable and boring, but he's not so weak that he becomes annoying and pathetic. Every character has their own unique personality and motivations, and the way Walm interacts with the people he meets, slowly changes his character and growth, his character is slowly developing like any normal human and his perspective changes from it. <<less

It's well written although it drags at points. The author is talented although the story and characters themselves aren't overwhelmingly compelling. The battle scenes are very detailed and make up the bulk of the word count. The character development is slightly less. They're realistic characters but the story rarely explores their motivations and the dialog is rather brief. You'll like this if you enjoy realism and action scenes. The main character is powerful but it doesn't feel gifted to him.

Came here from the manga and so far I'm liking the story. The war situation is well portrayed and MC really shows how he kind of suffers mentally cause of all the killing he has to do.

PTSD aside, MC deals with death on the battlefield by treating it as his job so the visceral description in his monologue makes sense.

The one thing I didn't like is that it becomes a power fantasy after MC starts learning magic.

Overall 3 stars

No spoilers, just want to say if anyone is interested in war, fantasy and politics, this is it. The cruel and harsh reality that the main character face, having taste both victories and losses, gives off a sense of realism of during war-time. A struggle of both individuals and a nation, the author relays his story flawlessly. Though it might not be the cup of tea for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed it. Again, I elaborate my opinion in such a general manner as to avoid mixing up... more>> the story as much as possible and hope that you people who chose to read Record of Highserk War would be satisfied with the eloquent and elegant story telling by the author. Much praise for the author and Kinokuratrans for translating this story. Much is apreciated.

Give it a read and don't rely on the comments too much, because it is YOU to decide wether this is a masterpiece or not. <<less

So far the novel is pretty good, the MC is somewhat portrayed realistically, in the beginning he just does a cycle of killing and saying it’s because he’s a soldier (probably because he’s literally dead inside), he never really had a specified purpose after his reincarnation, as he just went to war in hopes of earning money to feed his family.

Spoilers ... more>>
Spoiler

As the story develops, there’s many changes through the MC’s personality, in the first Arc he loses his whole squadron which resulted in him going berserk, and being very depressed and pessimistic, he would later fight in the Great Outbreak, but in the end he would be the only one surviving, (He wasn’t actually the only one that survived, his comrades thought he died so they went to the other country), feeling dead inside after failing to protect his friends, family, and comrades, he becomes a drunkard for a year (time-skip) in Arc 2, but then he finds a purpose again, he ventures with his party members, enjoying life again, but then there would be a incident where many people would die, one of which was close to MC, after the incident the MC resolves himself to protect the people he cares about and to rebuild his former empire, which then leads to the current Arc, Arc 3 which I am currently on.

[collapse]

This novel was good, the only thing I didn’t like was some characters dying, one of which I liked very much who also had romantic feelings for the MC, but still a good read, 4/5, should’ve kept at least Lisi alive. <<less

First thing first, I must say that I truly appreciate the author not pulling any punches when it comes to killing off characters. Other than that, the author also makes a good attempt at characters building what with the P.O.V changes giving us readers a chance to understand the side characters' thoughts and motivations. The flow of the story also isn't that bad but it can be better without the unnecessary time skip. Next, it must also be noted that the combat is a bit too detailed, such a thing... more>> really drags out the story and makes it tiring to read. Finally, my biggest complain must be translation, it's not the worst out there, but it comes close, what I mean is, most of the story is readable but certain parts make no sense ("muscular bone" might be the most memorable, but the descriptions of nearly every single large-scale battle come close, can't make heads or tails of their developments because the translation is just that bad). <<less

Wouldn't say it's a tr*sh novel but I can't say I like it either.

The main character is just a blank page that kills people for no reason other than that he is a soldier - why is he a soldier though? Why choose this kind of life when there are many other better things that he could've done.

Basically, we know nothing about his motivation. He's just killing, fighting, killing again. And then the author introduced scenes where he feels "guilt". Yet the MC has 0 intentions to give up on... more>> his shitty way of living. He is just a hypocrite.

Also, there's too much r*pe in this novel. <<less

I came from the manga and from a first glance without the excellent facial expressions, artystle the translation quality stands poor in comparison.

I enjoyed it when it was a more grounded take on warfare, but lately MC seems to have a too much plot armor.

Really it's kind of hard to sympathize with the MC when all he does is bitich and moan about killing and war. When he has an opportunity to leave, for some reason he chooses to stay.

I had hoped the author had the guts to stick with... more>> his original premise and have him die ignominious death. Pretty typical fate of a grunt being sacrificed by strategically poor commander. In short he should have died in the earlier chapters. <<less
