His name was Duan Ling. He used to be nothing more than an illegitimate child with humble beginnings. As a child he had his fill of neglect and torment until a mysterious man named Lang Junxia took him away from the Duans. Lang Junxia fed him, put him in school, and made him a new home. Lang Junxia told him that when the peach trees blossom his dad would come get him.

Then his dad really did come. He was far more impressive than Duan Ling imagined, far more dashing, far more omnipotent. It turned out that Duan Ling wasn’t a bastard whose paternal lineage was in question after all. In his veins flowed the most noble Han imperial blood, and the empire was supposed to belong to him.

But in troubled times, with the beacons of war lit in all four corners of the world, his dad said everyone had a destiny that befit them, and their destiny was the way of benevolent rule, that was why they could never remain content with their little corner of the world. They were destined … to carry the enmity of an invaded empire, to bear the pain of losing their homeland; to live as the self required.

A masterpice!

I love the fact that this story is so complete, author did not abandon any of his character, everyone played their part... Things did not happen for no reason and I did not meet any bandaids trying to cover plot holes as I didn't really find any...
Everything was so clear in the end... all of this complicated political plots were cleared well as we finish the book.
The only thing I was personally hoping for is
Spoiler

that author would reinstall Li Ruo faster and then for us to have one book dedicated to his work as a crown Prince. I just wanted to see how he would govern and how he would deal with politics when he was in power, not hidden in the shadow.

Other than this I'm extremely satisfied with this novel...
Let me tell you... Reading this you'll definitely be:
-happy
-sad (prepare a box of tissues)
-frustrated
-h**ny (wow the scenes are quite steamy... reading it I felt sometimes like it was an erot*c book...)

I came here for some romance. But stayed because the growth of our dear MC, Duan Ling. With karma looping one round, it makes hope for a better reunion with friends and family.

Not a simple novel but a coming-of-age masterpiece

I am very in love with this novel. I'm not normally interested in novels that are not yet fully translated, but for this wonderful novel I make an exception and invite everyone to give a chance to fall in love with this masterpiece by Fei Tian Ye Xiang as well.

The story is pretty interesting. I say, everything is very well balance. The tears, the anticipation are worth it.

a little spoiled

Spoiler

I remember reading it at 20 chapters first, and I dropped it for a while because the early plot seems boring, add to it that I usually seen a story that reveals MC and ML at early stage; the confusion make my blood turn cold for some reasons. Then I start rereading it again, and it's madly good. The emotion in here on the story is very well put. It feels as if you're there.

5/5 for Fei Tian's Joyful Reunion.

In certain books, every character, phrase, and relationship holds profound significance. Faustian bargains are struck, and seemingly invincible characters are brought down. Joyful Reunion is an example of such literature, where every betrayal and alliance can tear one's soul in two.

This masterpiece took me on an emotional journey through the kingdoms of Southern Chen, Liao, Xianbei, and Yuan, where I cried, laughed, and travelled alongside the characters.

Fei Tian's writing is imbued with poetic beauty, skillfully fleshing out characters to the point where their every expression... more>> feels vividly real.

Joyful Reunion is the kind of book that reveals the importance of each dialogue and interaction only upon a subsequent reading, allowing for a deeper understanding of the intricacies woven into the story.

If you haven't read this book, I beg you to stop loitering around the Novelupdates/Goodreads review page. You may catch a spoiler. Don't do yourself that disservice. Don't deprive yourself of the masterpiece that is Joyful Reunion.

Will I reread Joyful Reunion? Yes. Will I bawl my eyes out during the reread? Also yes.

Also, what do I do with my life now? Please send help.

You're now crossing into spoliery territory. Proceed with caution.

Lang Junxia

Spoiler

Did I forgive Lang Junxia? No. I couldn't bring myself to and I'll explain why. Would Li Jianhong or Wu Du, even in the most desperate circumstances poison Duan Ling and throw him off a cliff? No. They wouldn't. What a bargain LJX took by choosing to throw him into the river. What if he had drowned? He was unconscious, wasn't he? What if he banged his head agasint a rock? What if he fell into the wrong hands? Wouldn't Wu Du and Li Jianhong consider these possibilities? They would. This is why I did not completely buy LJX's story. I agree he had a turn of heart after a certain point, but I don't completely buy into his story of using deception to fool Cai Yan.

I agree that LJX is a layered and complicated character. I believe he raised Duan Ling with full sincerity and those years when they were together were genuine. I personally believe that LJX had a hard time accepting that his previously ruthless heart had been moved. This internal struggle manifests throughout the book as he shows up one moment to save Duan Ling and the next to thwart his plans.

Wu Du

Spoiler

Man oh man. Fetian did me a number. I had no idea who the ML was until book two. I made two wrong guesses and my mind was blown when I realized who the ML ultimately was.

I loved Wu Du and my only complaint is that the romance between him and Duan Ling takes a backseat after they get together. Yes, they have a lot of s*x which is tantalizingly well written, but the romance pretty much ends once they get together.

Yelu Zongzhen

Can I have this man, please? I loved him the first time he showed up in the book and thank heavens he remained a wonderful character until the very end.

Batu Borjigin

Spoiler

I loved Batu in Book One. Loved him to bits.
But the obsessive, maniacal dude he grows up to be really put me off.

Li Jianhong

Spoiler

Man! What a DILF.

I loved this man. Everything he said. Everything he taught Duan Ling is etched in my heart. Did I sob my eyes out for him? I did.

Cai Yan

Spoiler

What a hateful character. He deserved what he got in the end.

Zheng Yan

Spoiler

One of my favourite characters. I love how he is nonchalant, dismissive and such a dork when he's fooling around. But, no one can mess with him when he gets down to business.

Chang Liujun

Spoiler

Such an interesting guy. I loved the way his character developed.

This is an absolutely wonderful read that is woefully underrated. It is not an instant gratification kind of read and delves deep into history, war and the complexities of politics. The first volume makes you forget that it's danmei because the main character is still growing up and it's only when he's older that romantic themes come into play. The wait is definitely rewarding despite the slow burn because the romance is so healthy, so believable and so beautiful. It's one of my favourite couples and I've read so many... more>> danmei.

I've read novels with similar settings but this is the first one I've read which has been written so beautifully. The prose is so well translated (props to fox ghost) and I've rarely read a novel that is so poetic without seeming pretentious. That being said, it might take longer than the average novel to read. I had to reread many paragraphs over and over to fully absorb the beautiful writing and picture the scenes in my mind.

I won't get too deep into the story since plenty of reviews do it well enough but I would highly recommend this novel to someone who values high quality writing and a mature story with great world building. Each character and their story is well fleshed out that it feels a shame to part with them when the story ends. I am never one to overhype a novel but this one is definitely a hidden gem that I hope will bring joy and tears to many readers. <<less

I’ve read many BL historical novels, and this is possibly #2 after To Rule in. Turbulent World, by the same author. There’s not enough words to explain how masterfully the story is written, and characters are in this novel each have their own struggles and personalities. My only question is why isn’t it getting the publicity and accolades that it deserves. Absolutely must read—I didn’t sleep for days to finish this.

Before anything. Thank you, foxghost. The amazing translator who allowed this gem to b viewed by my eyes in between the bouts of uncontrollable tears.

The poems, the imagery, everything, could never have been appreciated without a very very very very very great translator. Kudos.

Anyways! Back on track. MC is great. MC is so duckin great. Favorite boi. So smart. Big brained boi. I love him so much. You want an MC that gets beat up? WE GOTCHU! You want an MC that uses his brain to the max and rises... more>> to every challenge? WE DOUBLE GOTCHU!

And all the other characters around MC are so DUCKIN GREAT AS WELL AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. You get attached so friggin thoroughly, it's as if with every word the author sewed the characters to your flesh and stabbed the needle through bone before coming out the other side to continue to attach u together. Yall read junji ito? Yeah! That!

I can't say much other than that without spoiling many things in my rave. So u'll just have to trust me and all the other comments that are praising this story to the high heavens. Good luck. Have fun. Cry your heart and eyes out and bring a water bottle with you. I just finished and my once-full bottle is just dregs now.

(p.s. The age difference is weird and MC is very young. But y'know what. It was a different time back then and I just shut my brain off whenever it tries to bring it up). <<less

Batu, I did not like how he became attached to Duan Ling and how he later tried to r*pe a man because he found it surprisingly pleasant ??? (Since it reminded him of the times with Duan Ling) At the end he did not entered the man, but still his principles are kinda dubious,

I don't like him.

I couldn't read the extra's after the epilogue. This is just too bitter sweet. You have to prepare yourself for the excitement, turmoil, political scheming, and betrayal.... I thought I was prepared but I'm still left with a heartache. This is so well written with beautiful idioms and prose. It's as if the author was yearning to vent from inner turmoil and this novel was its release. I recommend this as a great, but heavy read. Worth it!

I binged this novel in like 3 days and I'm amazed by the story telling. To be honest, the first 30-40 chapters do not have much romance so do not expect a lot of that in the beginning, the world building is amazing and the MC's background will make you cry.

My 2 favorite characters in this novel are:

  1. Spoiler

Li Jianhong - I loved it his fatherly antics with Duan Ling and was so heartbroken when he died....I just couldn't believe it

    [collapse]
  2. Spoiler

Lang Junxia - I think people love and hate his character. Reading his story in the Epilogue and Poppies really had me think that perhaps he isn't as heartless as he appears to be. I also bawled when he gave his life for DL...I don't think he ever stopped looking after him.... whether it be for LJH or himself

    [collapse]
I also couldn't guess the ML... maybe it's because there are so many male characters in this novel and his appearance was overshadowed by all of them. Overall, if you like palace, historical novels then you should definitely give this one a try! It is quite challenging to remember all the names, roles, factions, cities, etc. but the story building is definitely worth it.

This book is a masterpiece. I started reading this while I wasn't really into it, because it was a slow pace but it really grew on me. I fell inlove with all the characters.

Duan ling's journey is addicting. I just wanna read more about his experiences and the people he meets. The ML was unexpected to me, I really thought it was someone else hehe but he doesn't disappoint. He's actually perfect for our MC. It takes a while for him to appear though...

If your hesitant, please give this book... more>> a chance, it's very good. <<less

In my honest opinion, this is a teenager’s fantasy book written for teenagers. It’s full of lovey dovey scenes and relationships. The MC just falls from one embrace to another and easily and readily falls in love with that person. 🤦‍♀️ It’s unreal. None of the characters are true to their nature. The assassins? 🤦‍♀️. I really don’t think the author knows what an assassin is. In this book, assassins can walk around in broad daylight, play their flutes in public whenever the MC is feeling down, and the... more>> public can openly praise the assassins for their skills and looks. 🤦‍♀️ I gave it three stars because the book “assassinated” my boredom while I waited for the MLB All Star Game to start. Almost perfect for me. The only reason why I lowered this rating is the CP.

Don't get me wrong, they're cute and stuff, and I really like their characters alone! But the age gap really makes me weird reading, I feel like Duan Ling is too young?? ;A;

Stunning book, well worth taking the time to read. Emotionally gutting in the best way. I love all the characters deeply—this has one of my favorite MLs in any danmei I’ve read. Feitian’s prose is always a joy to read and the translator did it great justice. I’m sure this is a novel I’ll reread someday soon, because this type of intricate plot rewards it.

It’s not a light read, and it’s dense as hell, but I don’t think anyone can regret reading it. Honestly a masterpiece in my opinion. If... more>> you like political intrigue drama, don’t miss this one. <<less
