It's a pity I can't carry this book in my heart. I loved it. 5/5. No idiotic love story. Characters are well thought out. The romance progressed moderately without any *he's interesting* bullshit. Family ties were brought to light. The ML and MC had their own responsiblities, and independent thoughts. Tch! Let me go study for my exams before I reread it again.

I really can't get into it, their chemistry seemed so forced.

Spoiler

Their family is infuriating af, the emperor and Lou Jing's family, the face slapping isn't enought imo

And their couple scenes makes Lou Jing seem so shallow minded istg Like the crown prince will be thinking of court matters and Lou Jing will do or say something s*upid.

Not to mention Lou Jing already said so himself that's he's taking advantage of his pretty face to stay in favor, it just makes everything fake to me afterwards

[collapse]

Very disappointed because I really love the author's other work "Wife is First"

Might give it another try in the future but it's really not catching my attention right now. <<less

One of the best danmei novels I have read in a long while. The translation is beautiful and the author has really put a lot of time and research into the story.

The relationship was mostly healthy and there were no big misunderstandings or drama on that side which is a great plus. I would have loved to finally see a switch couple as they did have a lot of potential for that. I'd say the only negative thing about the whole romance was exactly LJ demanding to be on top... more>> without really giving his partner a chance. But well... we can't have everything good, can we?

The balance between the romance and plot was nice and political plots and intrigues were actually believable. I've seen some comments about how s*upid the old emperor was but let us remind ourselves that the story takes place in ancient times and many actual Chinese emperors are known to have been engrossed in alchemy and immortality etc, heaven's will was seen in every natural disaster plus they depended greatly on their ministers and eunuchs. Emperor's place I not always something that goes to the smartest person alive. Sometimes you're just the only suitable candidate in the bloodline, even if your IQ equals to that of a dead tree.

The same goes with alleged misogyny. It is mentioned a few times, how the crown prince was happy to be married to a man, beause a woman wouldn't have managed the pressure. It's absolutely realistic for there to be that kind of thoughts (even though we might not like it) because women didn't have access to higher education, weren't taught martial arts and their job was usually managing children and taking care of the household back then. It would be weirder to have a historical novel full of smart, literate and armed women that nobody is discriminating. We shouldn't blame the author for that. <<less

This was a feel good, simple read. There are no major misunderstandings, the CP gets together quickly, and are pretty much glued together for most of the story. I enjoyed it a lot, in spite of a few negative points.

It is established early on that the reason why Shizong emperor decided on male empresses was because of the actions of one lone female who took up a task she clearly wasn't prepared for? ... more>>
Spoiler

but then in the last chapters it's mentioned that it was because he was in love and wanted to marry his lover?

[collapse]
This set the tone for a lot of negative comments towards females in power which left me wondering if the author was male or female.

Author is insistent on bashing women in power while conveniently forgetting that there's an absolute idiot, with a dick, on the throne.

I thought that CP would take a literal minute to warm up to each other, given they circumstances of how they got together, but by the 2nd day together, LJ was already missing crown prince?

Perhaps due to the simplicity of the plot, and lack of any real intrigue, but the characters are a bit dumbed down.

Spoiler

LJ has to be the one to point out that the prince was being framed? These hard back court officials should be more versed in court affairs than LJ, yet they were surprised AF when LJ brought it up? 🙄c'mon.

At some point I thought that the east court officials really need to find other employment. A whole ass ancestral hall was built using monies slated for a dam, then that is blamed on the prince. Therefore they only thought that something was 'off' about the situation?🤦🏾‍♀️

I know there are works where everyone is dumb, and the protagonist is somehow smarter than everyone else. But, c'mon! The MC and ML are not even of age yet, they are 16-18 for most of the story. That fact actually annoyed me so I just imagined that they were 25-26 for my own peace of mind. Lol.

The dumb emperor trope somehow weakens this story for me. I get what it's trying to do, but plot would be richer if the emperor had an iota of common sense

[collapse]

The s*x scenes are what I wish The Wife is First should be. Mutual enjoyment on both sides, without one party having to put up with the other.

As a note, I'm reading this at the point in time that Postmates came up with a 'bottom friendly' menu, which has me now thinking.... BL novels always talk about aftercare, which is fantastic, but very few of them mention before care. Lol

Little scene of note: Zhao Xi (one of my favourite characters) was the top scorer, fantastic! He got the title because he debated the emperor and left him (emperor) speechless... ummm... not so much an accomplishment, is it? Anyone can talk circles around this brainless emperor.

In spite of some departure from logic, the story is easy to follow, sweet with memorable characters. MC and ML are bothering strong characters who can fully take care of themselves. No one is seen as the weaker s*x, though MC is often proudly portrayed as a boy toy of the MC. Lol. Definitely recommend <<less

I was initially going to write a review, but then I noticed the low rating and some of the reviews. So I figured why not.

Firstly, I thing this novel was closer to a low end 4.5 but gave it 5 stars because I do genuinely think the rating is unfairly low.

I really enjoy palace intrigues especially when it deals with smart characters thwarting the plans of their enemies. It’s my favorite, almost a guilty pleasure tbh.

I liked the MC and I found his character outline refreshing especially since I haven’t... more>> read an MC “gong” I a while. He’s got this playful, retriever puppy energy. I don’t think the authors likening him to a cat fit at all. Nor did likening the ML to a bunny, but that didn’t come up as often as to annoy me.

it was nice to see a gong that wasn’t the carbon copy of every other cold, uninteresting expressionless as*hole most people seem obsessed with. Instead, he seemed to be a tit for tat kind of person and I respect that. Like the empress, he took the phrase “do unto other as you’d have them do unto you” quite literally. Anyone that gave him grief, he gave it right back ten fold and anyone who showed him kindness or some type of goodness, he relayed that as well even if it was just by lighting incense for them.

i also loved that he never let anyone off. I got so sick of reading palace intrigues where someone has literally killed unjustly and indiscriminately and they let them off and just send them away or incapacitate them. That annoys me so much because they’d still find ways to come back. But in this, I loved how he was so decisive and straightforward with getting rid of people that needed to be gone, instead of playing at being this kind benevolent person.

anyway, the one thing I agreed with, however is that there was way too much unnecessary scenes or storytelling. Most of the time, people that read palace intrigues read it for the plot and its okay if the romance is second. But even if we ignore the fact that they quite literally get fully together by the 7th or 10th chapter, it’s the fact that it seemed like every time something interesting was happening or suspense was building the writer cut the scene and went to some love dovey bullshit. That thoroughly annoyed me. Time and placing were completely off. Every other chapter they were screwing around and it seriously bothered me that instead of doing his job in the military camp, the MC was off galavanting with the ml. The whole time I’d keep thinking “please, just go back to work, I don’t care.” because all I wanted was some interesting confrontation between him and the governor or him and one of the army soldiers but no, for a good 5/10 chapters it was all about him being in the Ml’s fiefdom and honeymooning while the ML is supposed to be working.

the other pet peeve was the constant correlation of being the “husband” or “wife” in the relationship, but I gave that the benefit of the doubt because it is written in ancient times. And if even now in the 21 century people still think like this, then even though it’s annoying, it was likely to happen.

hmm, I think aside from some little things here and there my major problems only account for that much, so while I do think the romantic scenes could have been done away with and substituted for more plot, it wasn’t to the point of completely hating the novel. So I’d recommend it if you’re interested in stuff like this.

this was really long and not very thought out but it’s 11 at night and I’m tired, spare me. <<less

I love this novel a lot, love characters, plot and translation. However it is true about sexism in the novel. Though it is not as bad as in some other bls. Unfortunately misogyny is a must have for 90% of bl novels which is especially sad cz they are mostly written by women. Anyway still love the novel and do recommend reading it!

P. S.: The translation is completed however due to the recent situation it is not updated here anymore.

But I have to say, the emperor is mad disrespectful. An emperor who can not follow the rules they are meant to follow can not possibly create a good future for themselves. You're an emperor, your behavior is a part of your position! I feel bad for the male empress.

Awww the MC and ML are super sweet together from the beginning to end. There’s a lot of complicated politics involved fighting for the emperor position which can be expected in that era but how the MC and ML were there for each other through it all and never adding a harem even when he became the emperor was really sweet.

4.5 stars.

Ahhhh this novel is so sweet ahhhhhh. The title is really misleading as both the MC (gong) and ML (shou) are very strong and either one could totally be the gong. They are both smart, decisive, and faithful. Lou Jing (MC) is a very shrew and capable general, while Xiao Chengjun is a wise ruler. There are some similarities to Wife is First and The Rich and Powerful Chang An, though I don’t remember much about these 2 novels anymore as I read them a long time ago, but... more>> there is a vague sense of déjà vu when reading this novel. However, what I really like about this novel is that both MC and ML have the same power dynamic. Because of the title, coming in, I thought it would be like a typical BL with a dominant top chasing the shou. And oh boy, was I wrong. They are both possessive of each other and both chasing each other. They have their own good qualities and strengths.

Spoiler

Xiao Chengjun is an unfavored crowned prince that struggled against a fatuous emperor father and a strong opponent that is the right prime minister and a favored Chen gui fei. This novel introduces a tradition of the crown prince marrying a male empress and that is where the fates of the 2 male leads really took off, though they have already met when they were little, which both of them remembered that memory very fondly. The MC falls in love first, or maybe they fell for each other at the same time? However, the MC expresses his love and trust earlier, while the prince has more at stakes. Nevertheless, the sacrifices they make for each other are both very heart moving. The MC gave up his family inheritance and put everything on the table to help Xiao Chengjun’s cause to achieve the throne, while Xiao Chengjun stayed faithful and only married Lou Jing and showered him with the same power (both governing power and military power) as that of the emperor’s. Taking this to the present day, it wouldn’t seem that strange, but it it quite unprecedented given that it’s the ancient dynasty. So what the title means I think is probably talking about how the ML/emperor always give in to his beloved, and breaking the rules/tradition for LJ. What I really like are that there are moments where it could totally spiral into a strong jealousy moment of misunderstanding and typical cold war, the author would sprinkle in little sweets right then and remind the readers of the strong love that they have for each other, and the 2 leads would make up smoothly again. For example, the part about the Concubine selection being approved and the MC was angry; hence, they did it in the study during the daytime. LMAO. The emperor was both embarrassed and annoyed, so they had a mini cold war for 3 days. The MC came to the imperial study upon hearing that people have been sending the emperor a lot of female portraits for the selection. LMAO, what LJ saw instead was his own drawn portrait by the emperor with every stroke speaking of the tender feeling the drawer has for the person in the portrait. Turned out the ML has been missing the MC in those 3 days of cold war too but can’t bear to come and look for the MC lol. In the end it was only to replace the palace maids and no concubine selected. What is really sweet, and a great ending is the last/third extra where they met again in present day. That was so sweet. This is at the end of that extra, during the birthday banquet of Xiao Chengjun where they finally meet again:

------

“Make a wish.” Lou Jing said softly.

Xiao Chengjun held his hand and slowly closed his eyes, wishing that they could be together forever. One life was not enough, and even two lives were not enough. He just hoped that they would never be separated.

If I make this wish every year in the future, maybe when my life ends in this life, I can meet you in the next place. No matter how difficult the circumstances are, as long as you are with me, it is heaven.

Ahhhhhhh!!!!! Sigh..... Sugar overdose. Another thing I was hoping to get an extra for was the modern day version of Ji Zhou and Xu Che, where they can finally get together and not miss each other for 17 years. Though there was an extra in ancient time of them finally reuniting after 17 years, but it was not enough. Poor Ji Zhou having to gave up his freedom and suffer in 17 years as the Empress, but still bought up Xiao Chengjun as a very capable and wise ruler.

4.3 Starts. Even though I'm not a big fan of court drama, I really like this book. I normally favor novels with early romance plots, when the characters evolve together instead of fighting with each other and this book is a good example of it. I laughed and I cried and I liked that not everything went smoothly for the characters. It was a very enjoyable read.

Super fluffy, the main cp is just meant to be from the very start so... No surprice there, the trama is polítical and raltionships centered 😉 which wow, well done author! it's just really original and somehow legit, like... It is belivable cuz the empreror is not all-controlling-hands-on-op-maniac which is the tipical "ML kind of empreror", he is wise for his age and has backers which to me is what you need to get the throne... Also he trusts the MC from the begining?! Wow 👏 I'm just amaized by... more>> how dreamy their relationship is (like really healty for the tipical BL throne centered standard, where there is always some non-con undertones (just saying))

What I don't get is all that misoginy the other coments describe...?? Like I don't see it in other rather than the empreror (who is an a**hole) and the father of ML (who, no surprice, is an as*hole too) which isnt surprising, other than that I think the women on "the good side" are pretty Bad ass

Spoiler
  • Rescued from a kidnaping without blinking (new mom)
  • Marrying a súper old disgusting dude for her families sake (also new mom)
  • Givin up a son for "adoption" wilingly so he won't be a looser like his father (also new mom)
  • Also givin son for "adoption" (the sister in law who I would have liked to see more of)
  • The BOSS of the military family (eldest aunt)
  • The BOSS of his erudit husband (third aunt)
  • Even the villan was a súper Smart scheaming bit h

I think that this novel is quite good!! The pace of the novel was PERFECT, I was on the verge of a reading slump but I got back into hungrily devouring novels after this one.

What I loved the most was the CP. They’re not too sappy yet you can see their love through their words and actions. Like during a conversation, MC would be occasionally pouring kisses all over ML, and ML hugging MC’s arm, those little kinds of stuff. It’s very heartwarming, yes it’s a fast burn but it’s... more>> a well-done fast burn !!

I’m actually glad that the characters act like actual teens in some aspects when it comes to the romance and not like 9-year-olds who just had their first crush.

As for the plot, it was quite memorable and outstanding, not too complicated but at the same time, you can remember it amongst other seas of historical novels, imo. (Unless you have bad memory of course)

Although there were few flaws here and there, It’s very worth reading. If you feel an ick about the male empress thing, don’t worry, the MC becomes an empress only at the very end of the novel since the main goal here is for ML to become the emperor, speaking of, I found the fight for the throne thrilling !!

The face slapping also got me giggling in the middle of the night HAHAHA LOVE IT!!! If you’re hesitating to read this, this is your sign to read it.

About the misogyny; I personally didn’t mind it since I’m very used to reading historical novels, and we all know how women were treated in the ancient days so it’s inevitable. I just hope that the author doesn’t hold the same beliefs.

Let us follow the courtesy of don’t like; don’t read :)) I could see why others didn’t like this as much, but I recommend it !! If you don’t feel comfortable, please drop the novel. <<less

I enjoyed this novel a lot, although I expected something a bit different.

This story does not really focus as much on the progression of the relationship between the MC and ML - in fact, their relationship could be said to be completely stable throughout the entire novel. The plot is all about the political struggle to get rid of an incompetent Emperor and scheming officials and put the ML on the throne. It was executed fairly well, it didn't get too complicated or too infuriating like some other stories of... more>> this type. Instead it was very enjoyable, with just the right amount of dog blood drama that made me want to bring out some melon seeds.

A fairly unique feature of this bl novel is that MC is the top.

The setting of this story is a society that has very low opinion on women, even the main characters ocassionally make derisive comments about their abilities. If this was not a historical setting, it would be fairly upseting to me. So I would caution anyone who feels very strongly about these things to perhaps not choose this novel. <<less

I love this book, it was so unexpectedly good in many ways. At first I thought it’d be all corny and lovey with no substance then I thought it would be all political and difficult to read to the point it’s boring and tiring but it was none of that. It was a healthy balance of love, adventure, politics. The main characters, side characters, and plot were amazing too. If any review says don’t read it let my review be the one pushing you to read it. You’ll love it!!

Rating: 4.5/5- I really enjoyed this!

The political intrigue was captivating without getting overly complex and boring. I loved the main couple as they were both smart and interesting with very specific goals.

I think overall it was a very pleasant read. I did feel there were some mild plot holes here and there but it isn’t a long read so for the number of chapters I think everything did come round full circle.

Definitely recommended!
