The tens of thousands of universes have merged. The disintegration of spiritual force led to the momentous collapse of the great Cultivation World, a mighty era that had endured through millions of years of history. In the wake of the large-scale invasion of the Wilderness, the Avalon of Five Elements has become the practitioners’ last stand.

After a thousand years, a lowly youth, who hailed from the Old Territory, toiled as a laborer for three years in the depths of the Wilderness. He then became an exception and obtained the opportunity to enter the Avalon Of Five Elements for further studies.

Bearing beast-like fighting capabilities and driven by the desire to take control of his life, the youth strived for greater strength and power. Little did he know that he would set off a majestic upheaval.

It bothers me that the elemental cultivation, which has a 10000-years-old foundation, is surpassed by the martial musings of a teenager, supposedly untalented. Sword embryo, such a cliche...

Just how on earth did people survive for so long with such an inefficient method of cultivation?

Well, as far as xianxia goes, this one is awesome.

important information: this novel is not complete. It should be marked as dropped.

The author drops a sentence saying he is sick for the last 2 years and have to finish the story there but at least 15 chapters before that point is nothing but fillers. And the story was in a good spot to be finished if he really wanted to be done with it.

Anyways the start was good but towards the end the upgrade/evolution of power bits started to get too long and boring.

Pros: Starts off with real promise and fresh ideas. The author also does a decent job with character depth.

Cons: The author constantly writes long pointless narrations and descriptions (after c70) . He'll write a few paragraphs about a city or character in a chapter, just to never mention or kill off what he wrote two chapters down. Additionally, his ultra long descriptions of world mechanics will drive you crazy making you have to skip half the chapter. -Annoying! Move the plot! Later as you read, the fights become incomprehensible and... more>> uninteresting. <<less

Amazing novel, it felt a bit slow for the first 10 ch or so, but then it started to pick up and became something amazing. It has alot of potential and overall really well written. The translator Has done a great job of tralslating and the story flows really well, had no problems reading it at all.

Only big problem I see is that the novel isnt being given enough attention by the translator and is being translated at a snails pace. Dont get me wrong the translator does an amazing... more>> job at translating but it takes a month for each chapter to come out.

Edit: At "ch 42" The translation has finally picked up, which is really nice to see. As long as it doesnt go the harem route or slows down its going to be a great novel for me at least. <<less

While its good in the starting, it started to go downhill after chapter 600 with no apparent reason.
The author tried to revive the chapter again after chapter 700 by introducing a higher realm but in the end still it too late.

I know that the author is not exactly proficient in ending the story as we can see from his previous popular work World of Cultivation, but the end for this novel is just simply miserable with too many loophole. It's not an ending, just probably this novel is not... more>> making him/her money anymore so it abruptly had to end. Even so, a proper closure of probably 5-6 chapter should be enough, not 1/3 chapter ending.

With this kind of dedication, any new novel from him should be steered clear far far away.

Once is fine, twice is pushing it. Alas, hope your health condition improves, dear author. <<less

Tbh, although ppl say the early parts were comparatively boring, I find them more enjoyable to read than the arc where I'm at. Back then, I pretty much put this novel on par on Ze Tian Ji, although I kinda take that back now. Both of them are slow paced, but at least in Ze Tian Ji, chapters were longer so it can get away with paragraphs of infodump. In here tho, specifically on recent chapters, battles are long winded and boring. It really can't be compared to ZTJ's heart... more>> stopping battles. The fact that author adds in fillers doesn't really help much in making it better, altho I have to say those fillers were more interesting than the actual battles. There were a lot of things I was disappointed, which I'll be going to list down some of them.

Spoiler

What disappointed me the most was how the MC still ended up getting trapped in the deus ex machina powerups despite showing promise early on with him training the hard way and all. I thought he was going to get OP by using his ingenious training methods. Welp author goes screw that, Imma give the MC all these impossible things multiple times in a row. I'm to blame for getting my hopes up.

The rivalry part was pretty cool. There were lots of geniuses stronger than the MC. It was showing how the MC is not the strongest person in his age and that was really my jam. But then the author gives ridiculous powerups to the MC. He just somehow catches up to these geniuses in a matter of month. I guess I am to blame for getting my hopes up on this one too. I'm just tired of this MC is the strongest thing. I was kinda hoping for MC being very exceptional because of his experience while still being weaker in other areas.

The romance.... Well, I mean it's not bad but... That's that, it's just not bad. I mean I shouldn't be complaining, but the author spends so much time on her, but I'm just not interested in her. I find the embroidery seinor more attractive in aal honesty. I mean like, the girl is starting to like the MC because oh he's so strong and dependable and mysterious. Like, it's just not interesting. Idk, there might still be chance that she won't be the main heroine, but I doubt it.

It was highly, and I mean very highly, stressed out that it's very hard to revive swordsmanship because of reasons. But then the MC can do it because he has like what, a sword embryo? Like has no one seriously thought of that before? It's been thousands of years, but no one thought of it? It's kinda ridiculous. You can spout paragraphs of reasoning to refute my statement, but you can't say it's not ridiculous.

Plot convenience is way too strong. Any strong points of the MC can just be shrugged off as he's been to this Wilderness we've never seen before, it's starting to get on my nerves. Like, the author is making out the Wilderness as this very dangerous area to the point of questioning how the MC even survived in the first place, it's ridiculous. I've read the line "I've seen much worse in the Wilderness" so many times it's sickening. Wilderness bullsh*t out of the way, there are still a lot more plot convenience. He happens to help this very OP sand puppet with a master that just happens to be very old. You can guess what happens next. He needed money and this training hall just happens to be having a competition for the heroine (same girl above) who happened to be on that city that day and the she happens to be wearing those restraining stuff and gets beaten by MC and I forgot to mention it was awas blind battle so she couldn't see his face. Later on they magically meet each other on a noodle shop and some stuff happens and then sse asks for him to look for the guy that beat her, which was the MC. I mean, like, that's some multi-layered bullsh*t there, maybe they're fated for each other after all. He happens to receive this blood bandage something which was an OP item his mistress gave him. And then an apocalypse happens and blood fiends start appearing and it happens to be their outing. And then his bandage happens to counter these blood fiends. There's so much more, this novel can't progress without having coincidences every 10 chapter, which is mostly where something is happening. Nothing happens without coincidences.

The adults are way too irresponsible. It's like pokemon, they just let the kids be on their own. I can't be bothered to give an example tbh.

[collapse]

Now after all that rant, you might think I'd say that you shouldn't read this novel. I won't. Because even though it has many flaws, it has its redeeming factors.

Spoiler

Altho I made it ssound like it glaring flaws, you actually won't notice them if you don't think hard on it. I only noticed it now that I'm writing this really. The mood is sometimes comedic, so it can actually get away with the ridiculous plot convenience.

All of the characters are well fleshed out and relevant. They don't have just a one time appearance and then disappear. I like this bit about it.

I really appreciate the the fact that relevant people do die in this novel, and that the author portrays it really well.

[collapse]

Probably a lot more things to say, but I'm kinda tired now. Conclusion is:

Is this novel perfect? No, not at all. Ze Tian Ji is definitely a better alternative to this novel. Don't expect this to be flawless.

Should you give it a try? Yes, you should give it a try. I know I complained about the part where the heroine meets the MC in a blind battle, but that's what actually got me interested in the novel. You should read it up till there first before deciding to continue or not. This was actually mm second attempt at reading because first time I tried, I got bored by the first 3 chapters. It picks up from there on. <<less

A short summary so far: In a relatively peaceful world, a young, battle-hardened protagonist enters an easygoing academy for cultivators. This leisurely life continues for only a short while until a catastrophe befalls the world and the academy becomes a place where everyone must struggle to survive.

This novel is very well written. It starts off like World of Cultivation but now is closer to Terror Infinity with well written thriller/horror aspects.

Amazing novel. The author make an amazing world building. The plot is good and so far not forced. The MC is very likable in my opinion and so far the side character also good. This really amazing and unique story!

Though I admit the first few chapters is kinda boring but if you continue to read this novel, I'm sure your opinion would change.

Above average by the standards of this site, which earns it a 3/10 from me. Tapers off near the end leaving much to be desired. Is it worth your time to read? No, not at all.

However, the rating is slightly low when compared to novels with a similar rating. This is because it was brigaded during the great QiDian war of 2017 (you OGs will remember this). Based on the standards of this site, I'd say around a 4.5 for earlier chapters and a 3.7 for later chapters. Still, not... more>> worth your time. <<less

I have pretty mixed feelings about this novel. It does have some really strong pros, which are:

    • Excellent plot
    • Side characters are a major part of it and grow along with MC, all of whom form a cohesive unit
    • Cultivation system and general power was actually pretty well thought out with decent explanations (mainly in the first half of the book)
    • Pretty intense moments where you feel the sorrow or epicness of the scene
Excluding the ending, it does also have some cons, which are:

    • Pretty awful world building, in the sense that it doesn't really feel alive or well defined. The author's other novels suffer from this, especially his Undefeated God of War (UGW), where besides a few focal cities, everything else feels flat. The number of cities, the population of the cities and the number of elementalists are all completely unknown. The rest of the world "just exists" and we never hear about much besides a few key individuals. Most other developments in the world just happen as a matter of fact. It's not as bad as UGW, but it's still pretty bad.
    • The world is pretty unexplored. I was hoping that we'd get to see the MC or others delve into the depths of the wilderness or into the upper layers of the atmosphere after we got sneak peeks of the former from Yu Mingqing or the latter from Le Buleng, but neither happen. Note: this isn't really spoiling anything
    • The MC is painted as a cool headed, ruthless individual with high willpower and is caring towards his friends and family, and this never changes throughout the novel. While we can see visible personality growth from the side characters, the MC is completely static in this department.
    • The romance is pretty lack luster and never really progresses past the point of the MC and Xueman eventually being okay with being teased by others about being in a relationship near the end, but neither ever really take a step into being in a relationship.
    • The idea that because of the MCs hard work and supreme dedication, he is able to come up with new ideas to recreate ancient cultivation paths using his limited resources that no one else has been able to do in millions of years despite how incomparably more qualified and well equipped these other factions are. This is also identical to his other novels
The biggest con however, is that the novel is completely unresolved. The novel started off really strong, but towards the last quarter, I started to get this sinking feeling that it was going to end up exactly like it's predecessor (World of Cultivation or WoC), and I was right.

The author often has short POVs from different characters, such as when trying to show an event from the perspective of a bystander, or as a means to foreshadow certain events in the story. However, exactly like WoC, the foreshadowings were ultimately meaningless because they led nowhere and instead created unaddressed expectations. One thing to note is that I stopped reading at chapter 687 and decided to peek at some of the reviews, eventually ending up reading a spoiler for how it ends.

Spoiler

Excerpt from the last page:

Initially, people were still actively searching for the Assembly of Patriarchs and Chi Tong. However, as time went by, nobody could even find a single trace of them. The Assembly of Patriarchs had practically vanished from this world. In the meantime, Skyheart City, God Nation, and Jadeite Forest seemed to have coordinated some sort of self-imposed silence.

As the major players faded into silence, so did the stories that accompanied them. It was the end of an era.

Everyone had retreated into seclusion, and the clouds moved quietly with the wind. Perhaps a storm was brewing, or the sky was just waiting for the sun to rise. Maybe the world was just waiting for the dawn of a new era...

[The End]

Author's Note: I sincerely apologise that this story has to end this way. My health has been terrible these two years, and this is my personal issue to bear. To all my readers, I'm really sorry.

To summarize, the MC disappears, and all major factions and characters we care about also disappear.

Up until chapter 687, with only 28 chapters remaining, these are all the loose ends that I can think of off the top of my head that have yet to be resolved:

    • Who is Master Shao's granddaughter? Why did he leave the Holy Emperor?
    • What is special about midnight? What happens when all the seals are unlocked? Whose Heart of God is better?
    • Who is the Red Devil? He was introduced very early but was basically never mentioned again after he was given a palace. Who is the little girl with him?
    • Who really is Heng Bingfeng and what is his current status in the world? What happens with Silver Soldier and Lu Mingxue?
    • Who is the prisoner that Ai Hui messaged through the tree?
    • What happens to the demonic armor?
    • What happens to those earth elementalists from Old Territory that Ai Hui saved and built a concentrated earth cultivation space for?
    • What happens to the Old Territory itself? During the initial pass through, Ai Hui and co notice that there are interesting resources like the rock core and there are mentions of other artifacts that Blood of God wants in there but all of Old Territory is never mentioned again.

Many of these questions are introduced very early on in the book, and are often never mentioned again. From the author's footnote, he mentions that the story ends this way because of health issues, but this feels like a BS excuse to me, given that he did almost exactly the same thing with WoC, which was written 5 years prior to AFE. Although I read WoC at least a year ago, I do recall that many side characters and plot elements were forgotten, the final battle was completely anti-climatic, and the history of Zuo Mo's parents and his father's armor were forgotten. Did the author happen to have suffered health issues then, too? He could have easily gone back to rewrite the ending and flesh it out but instead chose to start another series and leave it in a worse state. Perhaps I'm being too harsh and he had more legitimate reasons that I don't know about, but I was not impressed.

The initial Blood Calamity arc really got my hopes up and I expected this to be an epic book, but even excluding the elements above that remained unanswered, you could see things slowly devolving around the chapters in the early 600s. There were too many things to resolve and too little progression with the plot considering how much of the book was left. Ai Hui's cultivation progress goes through huge ups and downs and spends about 100 chapters in a coma, and right around where I stopped, we spend a s*upid amount of time listening to the perspective of Chi Tong (the demon god) who I really didn't care about at this point. It got chaotic and awful, with meaningless filler perspectives of grandmasters doing nothing but considering everything happening to be "interesting" and random events leading me to ultimately give up.

[collapse]

With all that said, I would rate the first 2/3 of the novel a 4.5 to 5, but ending on a 1, leaving me with a 3 as the final rating.

I probably won't ever read another book by this author again.

README: Novel has been dropped by the author due to health issues.

An enjoyable novel with a fantastic beginning and a nearly-as-good middle. Unfortunately, due to health issues the author suddenly ended the novel at chapter 715 and the one chapter ending does not tie up the story at all.

The characters of the novel are well fleshed out and its genuinely fun to read some of the interactions between the MC and his friends.

... more>> The story itself is interesting and pretty action-packed.

Overall was a definite recommend before it was dropped; I would still recommend reading the first half or so I think. But then I don't mind missing endings that much because endings tend to be a weak point for a lot of authors so think what you will. <<less

I originally typed out a long review for this but then realized that wouldn't help anyone. So here's the cliff notes:

  1. This novel, like World of Cultivation, is entertaining for like the first half, maybe 2/3 of the story. Then it goes horribly astray.
  2. At the current point of the novel, the MC is not even in half the chapters because the author has created such a convoluted mess of a cultivation path/story line that there is no true way forward that will satisfy readers.
  3. The release rate appears to be slowing, likely due to the mess the author has made of the plot.
  4. This novel is almost fully behind the Qidian paywall known as "premium".
In conclusion: under other circumstances, it might be worth reading, though likely will prove dissatisfying in the end due... more>> to either poor planning or an author that is struggling with something emotionally (can't tell which). As it stands, if you're going to spend a couple hundred dollars on something to read, rather than buying spirit stones just go to your local bookstore. In the long run, it'll be more satisfying than unlocking all the chapters in this novel. <<less

I really wanted to like this because of the author, but I couldn't. It's average at best. It was very interesting in the beginning with a modern cultivation system while the old cultivation era was gone, yet the main character trained in old era style etc. But then this novel turned into History's Strongest Senior Brother for me - it kept rambling and rambling to the point it felt like I was reading a wikipedia. I really don't need to know the history of every single speck of dust for... more>> 3/4 of a chapter.

It did feel like the author was trying to suppress the main character every time he grew strong so he would fit in with the other talents, and that's fine with me. But I had to take a break from incessant info drop or I think I'd go crazy. <<less

I have to rate this as... somewhat decent?

Not his best work, but readable enough.

There are so many negatives though.

    • Be prepared for way too many explanations on a myriad of stuff. There's the complicated five element system most people use. The Blood system that's introduced. MC has unique Sword Embryo System to start, before pinwheeling all over the place and redefining his cultivation system every 100+ chapters, all of which has to be explained in detail. Food has a rating system. Equipment has a rating system. So... many... explanations.
    • MC is basically Zuo Mo from World of Cultivation, only toned down and less interesting. No other real standout characters either. Get ready for a lot of constantly ongoing jokes with "Iron Lady" and "Elemental Cooking."
    • Not much has happened after 600 chapters, and the world feels small. There's been no exploration of ancient ruins or pocket dimensions. Nearly everything has happened in two small cities. Even sword upgrades happen from someone giving him a high tier sword, rather than having to work to find/steal one.
    • A lot of different perspectives that don't bring a lot to the story. Also a lot of drawn out fights that have no real point.
    • Also, this novel has hundreds of characters. Good luck keeping them straight. I made an effort to keep track of the 20-30 most used ones so I had some clue what was going on. Too often you'd find a chapter with one character you don't remember interacting with other randoms, and then have to try to figure out who it is.

Edit: This is more 3.5 stars than 4 stars. What I like most about the novel is the plot and world-building. The old cultivation world is gone, along with its system of cultivation. The current cultivation system gets challenged by other forces as the MC also tries to forge his own path. Like World of Cultivation, we get a good sense of how the evolution of the cultivation world is tied to competition for resources and discoveries of new cultivation and production methods.

My main beef with this novel is... more>> with its pacing and repeated depowering of the MC. After my initial review, the kind of filler I complained about was gone and the plot finally started... Except it led to a 150 chapter-long war--and the many battle scenes that go with it--ending with an unnecessary emotionally manipulative tragedy (and power down). The next arc has too much young master face-slapping filler and again, it ends with a power down. The current arc is another long war with too many battle scenes.

Original (c77) : As much as I love Fang Xiang's other novel World of Cultivation, this one doesn't hold up so far. The switching of scenes to the comedic side characters is reminiscent of face-slapping novels where a lot of chapters are wasted on characters who exist only to tell us how angry or impressed they are by the MC.

I also suspect it is an excuse to add padding and filler elsewhere. For example in chapters 64-66, the MC gets impressed while learning some technique, followed by 4 chapters about the pointless hijinks of a side character. When finally we get back to the MC, the first half of the chapter is just him repeating the same admiration he felt for how profound and profitable the technique is, as if the readers needed a recap. It even repeats the part about how he was lucky to have memorised it or he would have missed out on it.

Oh, and every new obstacle is an excuse to bring up filler sentences about what he experienced during his three whole years in the Wilderness! <<less

Like World Of Cultivation, Fang Xiang brings excellent character development and you can get attached to a whole cast of side characters (Sand golem is a good waif to MC). The world is interesting, and the story seems to be pretty good...

If you can handle the large amounts of ramble in the book.

A big flaw for me is how the author writes a little too much and delays the story with having to fill their quota of 2000 words per chapter to make more money. It gets a little boring... more>> because of this, in my opinion.

Nonetheless, if you can endure something that's a little slower paced compared to World of Cultivation, you'll probably like it. <<less

The story of a enthusiastic hardcore man that wishes to take control of his own life, others might call him money grubbing, I however just call him poor. The MC cultivates with a lack of talent, but has rich combat experience and a unique sword embryo that he cultivated, which allowed him to survive in the harsh environments that gave him combat experience. The only true complaints I have with this novel is that the author REPEATEDLY repeats the same thing over and over again and that the author spends... more>> a lot of time explaining through words not actions, as in he will literally explain to use with 9 paragraphs worth of text how embroidery is useful for combat, however at that time the MC isn't even nearby and it is being explained in the pov of a different character, meaning we learn this but the MC doesn't, yet he knows it already when he is back on the pov. It makes no sense and really detracts from the story. <<less

The story is at the post apocalypse now is more about recovering and political struggle. Less fighting and more in depth about clans. Its very different from the first apocalypse stage, where its more about teamwork and survival. However its still very interesting to read. I can see how this arch will become the foundation and very reason for MC to build his own clan in the future.

I can see there is something that World of Cultivation have can be related in this continuation series. Some thing from cultivation era still exist in here. Especially that s*ave flower technique which originate from black guard s*ave origin. This is the first time I read a continuation series that didnt require people to read the first series to understand but still can give a comprehension to whom had read too.

the most thing I like in WoC, there is spirit advisor pu yao, that make you laugh sometime with its superior personality. Which also makes MC smarter in politic rather than our current MC in Avalon with a yes man puppet lou lan. (The most everyone love in story, but the most lifeless of all). But, we have bangwan here in Avalon, the most competitive friendship I met so far. <<less

Anyways, this novel is overrated, as per usual.

74% 5 Star reviews? HUH?

... more>> The characters are generic. The pace is incredibly slow. There is loads of exposition dumping. There is training montages, but "different".

It's your typical Wuxia. The protagonist is a hard-working lower class citizen that gets an opportunity at martial school late in age, but has no talent. Then, he gets some fortunate encounter that allows him to springboard up the levels, ruthless and cunning, etc etc etc.

It's slightly better written that some Wuxia, but I'm not going to go out of my way to say it's phenomenal or trendsetting.

Primary difference is that there is an impending crisis for the world, so it's less "MC protects village from bad clan" wuxia to "MC protects world from bad clan".

It's readable. If that's what you're looking for, that's probably a compliment. If you're looking for excellence, look elsewhere. <<less
