This may not be everyone's cup of tea since it emphasizes heavily on unfair power dynamics between the FL & ML on a regular basis. Until he starts to realize his feelings, we are reminded of it almost every chapter/encounter between the two. Arvis truly sounds like a magical place ✨️😍 & Leyla really does stand out in her own right as the FL. I wish she had just a bit more confidence in herself, but again with the power dynamic it probably wouldn't work as well. Matthias being tr*sh... more>> most of the story makes you absolutely loathe him through & through... and while he has few redeeming moments of clarity about himself I still absolutely find him to be the most interesting character in the story... & the one who has the most growth (potential to) out of everyone. Give it a chance & decide for yourself. I am greatly looking forward to the serialization into a webtoon in the future! <<less

This is my first review on this website, im actually contemplated to reading this or not because there are so many review with 1 star, but there are so many review too with 5 star, and im gotten curious.

i tried reading this until 3 chapter and I think its okay, but in ch 4, I feel a goosebump, when I saw matthias pov "Nothing had ever sparked Matthias’ desire. Since everything had already been put in his grasp before he even knew it, the desire was a far-off feeling that... more>> he discarded as fictitious." I know with this thought that he will be the one who crash and shatter the women's life, in the further chapter. I checked back the tags, and apparently I saw "tragedy" tag there. I hesitant to read further. But I convince my self and read this.

Actually the first 40 chapters is so torture for me. I feel so afraid and anxious about leyla's life, as she is should to accept all this hurtful and humiliation from all aristocrats there. And I wondering why the author making a ML that as cruel as villain? But I don't stop, because I actually always love the sadistic kind of ML (in so many story), so it is weird to me if I don't like the ml, I feel curious of what if in the further chapter there's somewhat in the ML that make me love him?

And when the story continue, I start to realize why there's people that like this story, and I start to like matthias too, even though he is cruel. There's something on him that make us hate him but love him in the same time. As if for me, I like that dominant, authoritative and sadistic side of him, and he is that kind of ML that can give the world for you, unless Kyle who is so powerless, mathias is so powerful that there's nobody that can't stop him from gain what he want, and there's no one will dare to hurt you when you are with him. And his relationship with leyla too is so alluring, they have kind Love-Hate relationship. I always like that kind of relationship, you kiss him, made love to him, with so much hatred, but at the same time you cannot stop yourself to not drowning on in his charm. He is what people say by "sweet but psycho." <<less

I have been reading this translated version for quiet awhile but I have seen that the translator is adding up the scenes?? That even author hasn't written....

Adding up scenes would make this a fanfic.

The raws are easily available so readers can compare it or ask any other translator whom you know and ask them to compare it for you. It's a good novel but it would be better if the translator does not add scenes which were not written by the author and translate the lines close to the raws.

Other... more>> than that this novel extremely beautiful, what I love about this novel is the female lead, I really love how she handles the situation and is logical. <<less

I really like Leyla. She is naive, but not dumb. She loves birds and flowers, and curious about the world, I find that really lovely. She is also considerate and kind.

The duke is the type that dominates. I find him quite a sadist. He is obsessive and just... Crazy. And hot and perfect type of man. Typical character in novels but I like how the author writes him. Not that usual yandere who spoils rotten only to someone they love and cold towards anyone else. I'm not sure what he feels toward Leyla is love or just obsession. Honestly, I kind of hate him but I love the story.

Ohh and my favorite character is Uncle Bill! He is such a tsunderee I love him.

Loved it.

It reminded me to a certain extent of the love story between Takumi and Nana (Hachiko) from the manga NANA, my favourite manga story.

Neither Layla nor Matthias knew how to love or be loved, but they chased or ran away from it with their whole being. I ended up cheering for him way more than for her. He was a very interesting character and his character growth was awesome to follow.

This book is not for a snowflake auditory, it's not fluffy, at least for a good chunk of it.... more>> There were times when I was frustrated with the FL and ML, but I was rooting for them wholeheartedly.

I quite liked Riette, the duchess dowager, and Elysee by the end of the novel. <<less

I liked the novel at first because it was my favorite type of “obsession, escape, etc., ” but the relationship was so toxic that I could not bear this amount of poison! However, I continued reading, hoping that I might reach the point where the female is liberated from the male and ends up with a happy ending with her children and her childhood friend Kyle, but the shock comes when suddenly the female confesses her love for the male and that she has been in love with him all... more>> along! Despite everything he did to her! And at the end of the story she falls in love with him? This doesn't make sense at all, and I couldn't bear this scene, so I have already left the novel... because the female's behavior only indicates that she has become mentally ill after everything that happened to her because of the male! No sane woman would love the man who hurting her like that, ever. <<less

Great writing I must say the feel is very reminiscent of old victorian books

Romance to me is nonexistent you’ve a very obsessive man and a strong headed yet weak female lead, although it seems amend were made towards the end and the side stories are somewhat wholesome it’s hard to accept that somehow that’s an happy ever after

I enjoyed reading this solely because of the writing style and concept other than that the plot itself wasn’t worthwhile it’s a very typical romance

i came looking for some decent yandere/possessive love, but instead found a psychological... drama. with a significantly greater emphasis on the psychology part. I don't think I could consider this a romance, and as interesting as it was to see such a new and complex character in the ml, the lack of real romance didn't appeal to me. it might have been inferred from the synopsis with the line “If I am to lose her forever and can’t get her back, I’d rather kill her"---but I didn't expect this line... more>> to be so... literal. there is no romance, no obsessive love in this novel, mere obsession and psychotic behavior (and some s*xual lust). in the least exaggerated way possible, I am so sure the male lead has something wrong with his brain. I'm no professional, but he's either a sociopath or psychopath. he's not entirely capable of being your average yandere ML (and that's considering that most yandere mls are not right in the head; this one is just that much more abnormal).

mind you, the storytelling and depth of this novel are exceptional. there are so many intricate parts of this, from extended metaphors to story flow, that will undoubtedly intrigue countless readers, and would be fun to dissect and analyze; it's just that it wasn't what I was looking for at the moment. I also want to point out that the pace is rather slow: i've read 47 chapters and so far have learned little more than what the synopsis implies.

also, this is a random tmi, but while reading this novel, I was continuously reminded of The Great Gatsby (the classic novel) and Cheese in the Trap (the webtoon). if you've read either or both of those, I hope you'll get what I mean if you choose to read this novel :)

As a fair warning, DON'T expect some lovey-dovey cute love story. As from the TITLE itself, you can have an idea what kind of story this is. The author's writing style is just amazing. The scenes are written in a very detailed manner that let the readers immerse with the events and understand each character's minds. I love how the author took her time to describe Arvis, with its forest and the garden, as if you can imagine yourself there where the MCs grew up and where most of the... more>> story arc took place.

All the characters are wonderfully written and interesting. Their depiction was very realistic as they are flawed human beings. They have so much depth because you can analyze the complexities of their mind and action, based on several things (their personalities, social class, upbringing, trauma, etc.).

My favorite character is actually the ML, not because I found him endearing (oh no, you would literally hate him... to put it bluntly he's a piece of sh*t), but because of how intrigued I was about how his mind work. He is emotionally abusive and manipulative. The author's portrayal of Matthias' psyche depicts how much he lacked empathy and understanding of the difference between love and obsession. He was in his own little bubble growing up; used to a routine and high expectations growing up, obsessed with his reputation of being the perfect duke. But that bubble gradually began to burst ever since he met the FL. On the other hand, I truly adore the FL, especially on the later chapters involving her diary as a child as you can tell how much innocence and hopes she had as a child, optimistic despite always being abandoned and abused. But such carefree and idyllic life will change as soon as she meets the ML. I'm trying my best not to spoil but all I can say was that the tags 'psychology' 'dark' 'drama' perfectly described the novel.

Also, shout out to the translators who did amazing with the translations from start to finish. <<less

He'd bullied her, blackmailed, and r*ped her. Coerced her forcefully or willingly to be with him. It was obvious he didn't love her at all. Everything was just an obsession and desire thought to be love.

But it wasn't.

Love shouldn't have to hurt.

This line was taken from Chapter 139 (translated version from woopread. Com) and I find that this part perfectly sums up the story. The male lead did not know what love was, and the female lead was naive about romantic love. She was overwhelmed by the male lead's obsession and convinced herself that it was love-- that it could be love. It clearly wasn't.

This one of the few novels I've read where the Psychological tag is used perfectly. You may still call this a love story, no matter how twisted and dark it is. But I advise young impressionable readers to never romanticize love that is manipulative, vindictive, and cruel. That is not love, and it can never turn into love.

They said that Uncle bill will die😭 this is my first reason that's why I dropped this. They said he dies in war I'm not sure about this reason because it's been a while since I've read that in novel spoilers but I'm sure he'll die. My second reason is that the second Male lead (Kyle) is not the end game and we all know that because 2nd ML never win, I've read a lot of spoilers and I haven't read any about Kyle's marriage. I think I'll continue reading this if he married someone he deserves because in the end it doesn't look like he moved on from FL and it hurts me that he sees someone he loves got pregnant by another man, yeah the female lead is pregnant and the father is the Male lead of course.

Kyle became the doctor of the Male lead when the war happened and female lead is pregnant that time, I think that Uncle bill died that time too.

And for the 2nd FL (the girl who's fiance is Matthias) I forgot her name because it's been a while since I dropped this I just came here to put my review. Anyways about the second fl, she have someone she really loved and sadly he also died at the end.

This novel is just so depressing so I choose what will be good for me which is dropping this. Lol

Absolutely in love with this novel. I went ahead to read spoilers, and my heart is hurting for Leyla & Uncle Bill.

ML is a tr*shy character in the novel, but he is honestly written so well. He is an aristocrat through and through. He is selfish, he knows he has powers/authority over FL and he uses it so well.

This is the first time I'm writing a review in this site and for a story. Cry, Even Better If You Beg, gave me pause before I started reading it. The title is pretty telling but that’s how I choose what to read. I want all my emotions engaged and so into a story it would be very hard to get out of it. This story is not for everybody. The ML is truly despicable but how the author portrayed him given his circumstances is understandable although very unreliable if... more>> such a person can truly exist. He has everything presented to him in a platinum platter and he takes what he wants unmindful of feelings and consequences and in his status, these thoughts would not even enter his mind at all. The FL given her different set of circumstances tries her best to deal with adversaries that come her way, mostly due to the ML. I love these 2 flawed characters and the story telling style of the author. Even when I have such mixed emotions with these characters, there’s no question how quickly I became invested in their story. There’s anger, frustration, moments of sweetness along with feelings of high blood pressure rising - but despite all the roller coaster of emotions, I am rooting for the characters. I love all the supporting characters, the 2FL how she deals with the situation, all of it. I have been recommending this story to others but I understand that some will not be as invested as I am. I look forward to days when new chapters are updated. The translation team or person have done an exceptional job in doing so. I was very happy to read this story will soon have a visual representation... OMG.. that news just made my day. I am a speed reader so I try to wait until I get 6-7 new chapters before reading the updates. Now it’s saying it’s on break and will be back in 2 weeks, this will be the longest time I’ll have to wait. But since I like this story so much, 2 weeks is nothing compared to the joy and sorrow I experienced when reading new chapters updates. Thank you for the author, for writing such a unique love story, thank you for the translating team for doing an exceptionally great job and I can’t wait for more when new updates will be resumed again. <<less

Since Matthias is an a**hole and the novel so far involves non-con (or perhaps dub-co if you're really, really lenient) I understand the low rating, but hear me out. If you can tolerate or enjoy twisted situations and a sadistic ML this one is SO worth it. Leyla sure is pitiful but she's also a strong FL and yes her circumstances suck but she's just trying her best. Every single important character is tridimensional and I simultaneously love and hate them, Leyla being the exception because 98% of the time... more>> I'm a stan.

AND OH MY GOD this is seriously so beautifully translated?? It's my favorite novel in that sense and it's also updated very frequently. Although I don't usually listen to it they include the audio novel* for every chapter which I think is cool.

I hate everyone except Leyla and Uncle Bill. I shed so much tear while binge reading this. I feel so bad for Leyla. My poor lovely girl. Matthias is a well-written bad character. He was unlike the other psycho male characters who had a traumatazing past that resulted to their evilness. Matthias is different. He didn't came from a toxic environment, nor he was mistreated, he wasn't traumatized by anything/anyone either. He isn't crazy, but his desire to possess Leyla turn him into one. I hate him. I really hate him. I also hate Claudine and her mother, Kyle's mother, Matthias' mother. I hate those who tormented Leyla for petty reasons. The girl is such an angel, so pure. She deserves nothing but the best. All I can do is to imagine that she didn't ended up with Matthias. I'll comfort myself by imagining that Leyla successfully escaped from his grasp, happily living with her dear Uncle Bill in another dimension. This is a great read. Thank you much, translators. ❤️

Everything is just so amazing! The metaphors are just brilliantly put. The uses of birds and flowers to describe Leila! I mean the way the author has written the book is just amazing!

Even though I don't like this character Matthias Von Herhardt at all but I can only grumble about it. I'm truly at awe at the author's writing rn. The epilogue + side stories are just beautiful. The author just blended the Male Lead so well that you can't really refute the pairing in the end, and it isn't... more>> even forced or just for the sake of male and female lead being together out of the blue. But I'll be honest, I don't like Matthias at all. I'll always choose Kyle over him. <<less

(Warning: If you ain't ready for crazy yandere who made FL suffer by power-tripping & bvllying then don't read it to save you from angst)

Honestly, I'm confused on feelings while reading this but can't help but binged read it... the author got a way to write the novel interesting and made readers hooked.

The FL (Leyla) and ML (Matthias) were both flawed character. ML was crazy yandere and his obsession with "his idea of love" really scary. He's complicated character that no reason to like him. Meanwhile, FL was... more>> indecisive and weak... but can't blame her bc of her status was nothing against power-tripping nobles. She suffered alot before Uncle Bill adopted her... when her life started to become peaceful, ML destroyed the peace including the demise of Uncle Bill.

Only the last few chapters were only consolation after roller-coaster of emotions throughout the novel. Can't still can't fully forgive ML, just glad that FL final got "happy ending" after multiple sufferings (even tho it obv she got Stockholm Syndrome) and kid's sake lol <<less

If you're not in to angst then this is not for you. First of all I like how the story first started author has used imaginary techniques in the through out the novel. It did help to imagine everything vividly, from characters to background. And this novel clearly shows the complexity of human nature. Contradicting and twisted personalities, greed, selfishness in humans. Yes this love story between the couple took the wrong start. I don't justify the sadism of the ml. And yet this shows clearly heart wants what it... more>> wants. Their story is quite similar to that of Persephone and Hades's. The constant metaphor "the bird in a cage" in this novel is really awesome and a clever idea not gonna lie. I read this in the woopread. Translation was really top notched. Author and the translator has done a great job. So far one of the best web novels. <<less

This is a VERY TWISTED story of abusive and obsessive 'love'. It's a psychological mindgame of a cold, manipulative, possessive and powerful aristocrat FIERCELY OBSESSED with a women, whom he torments endlessly.

Matthias carries ALL the traits of a psychopath, where Leyla is a compassionate, kind and loving woman. Matthias uses Leyla for his own twisted amus**ent, but gets burned in the end.

They both learn the hard way what love is really about. THIS is NOT a romance novel in the typical sense because of the abuse that occurs throughout, but... more>> it is one of the BEST books I've read that forces you to evaluate human behavior through all of the emotional upheaval caused by abuse shrouded by obsession. <<less
