Slow moving but very expressive - you get points of view from many characters - not just the MC and her bestie. At this point, a second lead is shimmering on the far horizon and he can't get there quick enough.

Even though there are only a few chapters, this novel seems really promising! The mc's seem sensible and likable. I'm looking forward to how they interact to see if they can change the past.

It's one of my favorites! The writing, the action, the pace of the story and the roundness and realism of the characters are pretty good.

If there's one thing I can't understand is how in the beginning ML and his family can't see the 2nd female lead's vile character. And, even so, they're too indulgent of her.

Also, when I think that the male lead was so indifferent and cruel to her in her previous lifetime that he didn't even call a doctor for her and she died all by herself -... more>> it leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Edit: 3.5 stars
After finishing the novel I can say I dislike the ML and wish she ended up with the 2nd ML. Even in the 2nd life, he kept pushing off fulfilling his promise and getting rid of his evil cousin who was targeting MC (he did this for his mean mother, who also mistreated MC). After she already forgave him before, she still forgave him again and didn't leave him this time either... He's not worth it, if you ask me. I'm really disappointed with her, this man already caused her death in their previous life, and this time he put her through sh*t again, he owes her too much. She initially seemed to have changed and gave up on him when she regressed, but later became the same doormat she was in her 1st life.
The novel really is well written with well developed characters, I just don't agree with MC's poor taste in men.

My character list:

This is undoubtedly one of the worst novels I’ve begrudgingly read in my life. Seriously. The tr*sh mother in law, sister in law, HUSBAND, cousin the whole tr*sh family, and the s*upid tr*sh MC all deserve a plentiful beating (preferably from me). There’s no substance to this story and nothing going on besides the pattern of mentally insane MIL having her mental issues, and every other family member that’s ever been added to the story causing the MC grief... seriously save yourself and your time... read something that won’t make... more>> u lose brain cells <<less

Although Chinese people say that there is no pill for regret, Chinese writers love to write fantasy novels such as this one, about redoing one's regretful past by being reborn and doing it properly this time.

I like novels about arranged marriages or starting from unfavorable circumstances and winning in the end, because even in long term relationships people change and circumstances change and surprise us and we have to start over so to speak, so I like this novel as well. It combines both themes.

It is a story well told... more>> and well translated and a lesson to us all. People, places and things are not supposed to love us or even like us right away just because our eyes have such and such shape or our skin is such and such color. They are also not supposed to forgive us our mistakes or missteps and our egocentricity (the FL knew he was in love with another woman and she was the third wheel re: their relationship and she still married him, imposed herself on him, got into his bed and into his life!). But there is always a chance. If we behave decently and care about people with dignity then there is a chance for harmony, wellbeing and even love, mutual love.

In this novel, a bride is reborn, a bride to a groom whose heart belongs to someone else. (Apparently, not entirely, not wholeheartedly, since he did agree to marry someone else after all!)

She is poor, he is wealthy, and in the past that marriage destroyed her. Now she is reborn and decides to start from
Spoiler

one point they both agree on - neither of them wants to be in that marriage and consummate it on their wedding night. That sets up a stage for mutual cooperation and good will, let alone a common goal, where both will shine during their first year of marriage after which they agreed to divorce since that wedding night. But lo and behold a fake marriage is still a marriage and that influences things and people, the spouses fell in love with each other in the end. Well, in the middle. By the six month mark in their marriage, by ch164 whoch is the middle of this story, they are r e a l l y married, together in body and soul and are enjoying their union immensely.

The author loves that trope of a decent woman being in arranged marriage with a man whose heart is already occupied so much that she created a side couple and described their disaster and resolution as well. It's about that young man who is in love with a tavern waitress, but his parents forcefully married him to someone else. So he abandoned his wonderful new wife and escaped with the tavern girl, disappeared. Later on in this novel, the author will tell us the story of his marriage to a great woman after their rocky start.

She also uses this setup to describe the feelings and behaviors of the third wheel. Once a man is married, another girl/woman is not supposed to approach him, hug him on the morning after his wedding night and vie for his attention, or try to destroy his marriage, unless she is a s*x worker or his kept woman, I guess. But things are rarely that ideal and easy if ever. The heart wants who it wants, so we read about the third wheel's feelings and behavior a lot in that novel.

This same writer wrote "Picking Up a General to Plow the Fields" which I highly recommend (if you like this one) as well. There are dozens of unbelievably difficult relatives and difficult third wheels in that one and the FL is the force of nature, so amazingly skillful in her dealing with difficult people.

You can pretty much trust this author, she understands human heart and is superbly talented in describing people realistically in slowly moving slice of life narratives. Every novel of hers including this one will show situations that would make your blood boil with indignation and your mouth vomit blood, watching seemingly normal people believing in and doing terrible things, but all of them will be beautifully resolved in the end. That is why this novel has so many low ratings: there are disgusting and nasty things done by various characters on every page until the very end. It is very unpleasant to read about it. It is so dark, there is barely a speck of faint light seen now and then in this narrative, too many average to bad people. So, if you are not into such kind of survival drama in a huge and malignant Chinese household, then no, this novel and this author are not for you.

This is as interesting as watching paint dry. The premise at the beginning 8s captivating buy from there, it goes nowhere. What is the end goal of the MC? I'm not sure.. It's just her day to day life of mundane repetitiveness. Personality wise, none of the characters stand out. Worse, the story drags on and on, the exposition is terribly uninteresting. The scenes drag out unnecessarily even after the main point has been made in a short paragraph at the beginning. With each new chapter, Therese other nothing to... more>> look forward to or another low IQ repeated plot. <<less

I have never read a novel that gave me as much frustration as this one (probably because I tend to avoid frustrating plots). I liked the beginning because it showed the slow transition from playing husband and wife to becoming a real couple. They did an excellent job of describing the developing emotions between the two. While it started off well, it eventually led to the plot becoming very repetitious and the treatment of the MC becoming very egregious. I understand that in this time period women didn't have many... more>> rights and they were often told to endure hardship rather than confront it, but this novel takes it to a ridiculous level. For example, when the ML's sister moves back in, she literally tries to physically assault the MC and regularly diminishes her by bringing up her family's lack of wealth or something generally negative. Rather than being punished for her ill manners, she's only given a verbal tongue lashing from her mother and brother, that's the extent of it. She isn't even forced to apologize to the MC for acting like a disgusting shrew. There were so many times the MC was wronged and the only comfort the ML gave was that as the Madam of the Shi household it is expected for her to endure insults and situations like that and that she'd just have to deal with it because nothing can be done.

And don't even get me started on the mother-in-law. She is literally the most childish, naive person in the novel despite her age. She's quick to anger and this forces the MC to grovel in order to get her forgiveness, even for situations that are honestly not her fault. For example, later in the novel, the ML picked up the MC bridal style because she tripped. The MIL called the MC over and yelled at her for her son picking her up bridal style. She's also incredibly impartial to her daughter and to her niece (ML's childhood sweetheart) even when she knows they're clearly in the wrong, but if the MC makes a mistake she forces her to kneel in forgiveness or apologize over and over again. Despite this clear abuse of a MIL toward a DIL, the novel still tries to portray her as an amazing mother-in-law who dotes and cherishes the MC. Even the MC says that the MIL is a great person after she's scolded for no reason other than the MIL needing to vent at her.

The main antagonist in the show is the childhood sweetheart and she's like an annoying bug that doesn't go away. She made schemes to dismantle MC's power and reputation in the family over what feels like a 1000 times and it's crazy how hard she is to get rid of. Literally, all it takes is the ML putting his foot down and expelling her from the family.

For me, I'm not comfortable reading something that keeps hammering home that women must be gentle, graceful and obedient in order to be great wives. While I know this is something I should have expected reading a period novel, I'm also read plenty of period novels that remain authentic but at the same time do not portray the MC as someone who simply can endure when ill acts are taken against her. The ending is also crazy when its up to the MC to get rid of the former childhood sweetheart (I still could not believe that she was still around then) after the childhood sweetheart tries to kill her when the MC's pregnant. The MC is then threatened with jail time for killing the childhood sweetheart. I tried my best to like it since I enjoyed the beginning, but I honestly can't stick with it. Overall I don't really recommend reading it. However, if you enjoy plots like that, then give it a shot. <<less

I personally think that the FL deserves better. ML is a good person but— I believe there is a better guy for the ML, such as ML's friend.

I dislike FL's mother-in-law, she really cannot distinguish right or wrong.

The incompetent MC and ML had one job ONE JOB!! And they took for freaken ever to do that job with all these excuses that caused me to want to pull out every single hair on my head because that would be less painful. Okay I'm done ranting.

Good luck if you decide to read this

It was nice and all but the ML backing off of his word, that is divorce after a year, is OOC for ancient China. If he can't even stay true to his words, how do I put it, he deserved to be mutilated by a thousand cuts. The ML does not conform to how people from ancient times should be. From this point, the author, to force the romance this way should have researched more. The ML can be considered as a scum through and through. FL, getting divorced and... more>> finding someone else would have been a better outcome. <<less

I like the novel it's pretty entertaining. Not super dog blooded but smaller tense, realistic situations which I appreciate. For everyone saying the ML sucks because of how he fell out of love with his cousin, it didn't bother me because her character doesn't match up with how he thought it was and that's why he lost interest. If the FL and the cousins positions were reversed im sure she would have just waited for him without setting up his wife for failure because her character isn't scheming. I dislike... more>> how alone the FL is sometimes. The ML is literally the center of the universe for so many people in the shi household, even when they admit that the FL has been wronged they don't really do much to atone for it. And of course it takes the ML forever to get how badly screwed over the FL is all the time because everything favors him so much. He's only helpful and decisive when the problems are not directly affecting his household. I'm only halfway through the story so hopefully this changes. <<less

I’ve read up to chapter 78 and I officially realize that the FL is going to end up with the a**hole husband!!!

He’s TERRIBLE! He is so completely selfish, inconsiderate, and oblivious of her as a person with feelings. This guy has not been redeemed in her rebirth at all. The worst part is that the book introduces another male character who I feel is a second male lead. So far he has only appeared twice but both times not only is he 1000 times better than the ML, but his... more>> rational thought fits with the FL more. Yes, this means that the ML is an idiot whereas the SML is smart. How does that work?!? Damn.

I’ve read the comments and I know how this one ends now so I’m dropping it. To be honest, the FL deserved so much more! It would have been preferable if she got her divorce and ended living a peaceful life far away from her crazy husband and he’s crazier mother and concubine!!! The second option would have been the SML. I’m so upset right now because this book had so much potential. I actually love the FL. The only thing I hate is how she chooses to stay with her douche husband. <<less

I loved this novel. Kudo to the translator !

It's a slow romance novel, but it's worth it.

ML and MC struggled, and ML isn't head over heels - I dote on my wife immediately, but that's what makes the journey enchanting!

I've loved reading it.

The summary hooked my interest and honestly, wanted to see how MC will escape her fate especially since I am an avid reader of rebirth tropes. However, as much as I want to like this series, I finally decided to drop it thanks to the ML. His efforts of trying to win MC, is full of inconsistencies and contradictions, adding the fact how his mother treats the heroine. It makes me frustrated and can't help but want the MC to fake her death and escape the family to live the... more>> life she deserves. I really couldn't like them no matter how the story plans to redeem them in further chapters. <<less

Amongst all those rebirh/transmigration stories I've read, for me this one is a little bit bland. I was hoping for some awesome face slapping and counterattack but yeah. It got so boring because the plot was repetitive. Villain throws tantrums, ML despises her, MC does nothing and it goes around and around in a vicious cycle.

I do like calm and composed MC but this one seems too 2D (¿) I didn't feel fluctuation of emotions when reading this book. ML is kind of weak or maybe I'm used to OP... more>> ML. But he just didn't do ANYTHING. Even when he knew his cousin's true face, he sat there and do absolutely nothing. His love was so fickle. I meant, in the first 50 chapters, he was so annoying with all stuff like my childhood sweetheart and such. When he realised his feelings changed, still he kept his cousin around and didn't get rid of her until the very end.

Anyway, surprisingly the ML is not my least favourite character nor it is the villain. It's the Mother In Law. Cannot describe how awful she was in a few words. She changed her mind as fast as a flick of hand. Sometimes she was on MC's side and tomorrow when the cousin said a few words, then she hated MC.

It's a relatively good book if you have nothing to do. <<less

A gentle story. The face-slapping situations here aren't too excessive and quite plausible.

It's great that the ML gradually becomes more enlightened as well and isn't the typical overbearing type.

I give 5 star for translator and to encourage y'all to try to read this novel.

Storyline: 3.5

Character: 3

It's an okay romance novel. All in all is pretty generic, your typical rebirth and woo the ML story. MC was weak and didn't have strong will to revenge her past life. All she wanted was to be happy so there weren't many face slapping scene. ML was... s*upid, bastard, idiot (you name it) and didn't deserve MC at all. But

This story is written to make the second FL (Shi Fengji) seem like the villain, but the more I read it the more she just seems like another victim of the scummy ML. Yes she might have schemed a little to be with him and improve her circumstances, but who wouldn't in her position and actually she hasn't done anything terrible (yet).

The ML however is toying with 2 women feelings and acting all disappointed in their behavior, but he literary doesn't even seem worth it, he has a wooden personality... more>> and if he wasn't rich I doubt any woman would look at him twice. I'm sure he has a redemption arc at some point, but lets be for real, this guy is tr*sh. <<less
