At eighteen years old, Lin Qingyu was married as part of a Chong Xi into the Nan’an Hou Mansion, becoming the ill Lu Wancheng’s male wife.

On the eve of their wedding, Young Master Hou lay lazily on the bed and said, “Beauty, to be honest, I really don’t want to engage in domestic struggles. I just want to drift along, eat and wait to die. I want to be a Salted Fish.”

A year later, Young Master Hou became gravely ill. He took Lin Qingyu’s hand and sighed, “Wife, I’m going to die, but I think I can continue to transmigrate. In order for you to properly recognize me in the future, let us set a secret code.”

After the death of Young Master Hou, Lin Qingyu was prepared to stay a widow all his life.
Lin Qingyu would rather die than remarry.

Unexpectedly, after only 1/2 a year, …xoxo… actually came to propose marriage & said “If odd, change; if even, remain the same?”
LQ: “…I will marry you.”

After two years …

Lin Qingyu knew that although his husband was a bag of lazybones, no one was his equal

There's so much to say but I won't spoil for others, just that this is so so good, the way they fall in love is so natural, not rushed and lovely, their feelings, , , are true and personal it doesn't feel that they're characters in a book but regular people, their hatred, their jealousy, their love, their sadness, their happiness, it's so real and so goddamn good to read, damn I really wanted more of them, 140 chapters are too little ;-; If you want a nicely paced and... more>> good story with lots of love then this is for your. <<less

This novel is beautiful. I think I read it twice and is one of my favorites together with Little Mushroom.

The story started with the MC marrying the sickly ML as decreed by the empress. The ML is a transmigrator who died saving two people in the real word. He transmigrated into a novel his cousin made him read. From the start of the story, they were already married. They go through their married life plotting and trying to survive the machinations of their enemies.

Spoiler

The MC is an amazing character. The author did a great job on the MC's characterization and the changes in his feelings for the ML. He started as this reluctant husband who's planning on offing the sickly ML during their eedding night to being this person who fell deeply in love with his smart but lazy husband. As a warning, he is not the kind, gentle, white moonlight MC character. He's smart, ruthless, and, as he was described, full of malicious feelings. He's like a beautiful but very poisonous flower. He can off anyone who tries to do evil to him and his loved ones. He's also very protective of the people he cares about, and one of those people is his salted fish of a husband, the ML.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The ML is, well, I really love the ML, he's enjoyable to read and the main source of joy in the story. When he transmigrated at the beginning of the story, he was just 17 years old, a high school student. Sometimes his age shows and it's such a contrast since his soul is in the bodies of grown men. His character is basically a salted fish, and just wants to live a lazy life. He likes fishing and laying down, just living with the MC, but he's a great character. As much as he is a salted fish, when push comes to shove, he's there for the MC. I love how very human the ML is. When his soul was in the body of the general and he was about to lead the army to battle, he showed weakness to the MC the night before he's about to leave. He admitted that he was a little scared. But when he rode to battle the next day and fought, he gave all he got. That's basically the personality of the ML, he's a salted fish but a very dependable, kind, and smart one. He might even be smarter than the MC who's a cunning and a Machiavellian character

.

The ending was completely well done. There were no lose ends and what ever plot lines need to be finished were done well. I felt the author did a great job with the extras too. Overall, I like the story and how the characters were written. Even the evil guys, as much as how well deserving their comeuppance were, were 3 dimensional characters. <<less

I love this story so much. It made me laugh and cry at times, even while knowing the spoilerish title and summary. The writing is so good and I felt like most charakters were quite well fleshed out and not too one dimensional.

Yes, we have a questionable MC and ML, but I honestly don't think they went too overboard considering the context. Ancient China just has a lot of scheming and killing, but I also don't think our couple went too far: ... more>>
Spoiler

I think they killed four major charakters.

  • First the brother who mainly humiliated the MC, but he was only actually killed when he tried to take ingredients of MLs life-prolonging medicine and confronted ML, which resulted in ML throwing up blood and aggrevating his condition.
  • Then we have the crown prince. ML wants to kill him because he knows the original ending for MC and that the crown prince would force himself on MC and cause MC to die in the original book. He is just too powerful, so MC and ML can only deal with him that way.
  • Emporer (?). Well, they mainly play with the emporers health and manipulate him, but he was already sick at that point in time. I think they did have a hand in his demise, but he was already dying.
  • The eunuch half-brother. Well, that one was the most justified imo. They tried to kill and scheme against each other and well kind of did. The eunuch pretty much killed the general.

Aside from these I don't think they killed any major characters or did anything too bad. And well considering the time in which the story is set, I think they are quite okay and humane.

They did spare the younger prince brother, they did not touch anyone in the Lu household besides the brother (and the trap for the servants) and they gloated over other peoples misfortune. The rest is just a bit of scheming which is absolutely normal in this setting. We also see that the MC will not go overboard in the extras where they are in the modern world. He is just behaving according to his setting, which is fair imo.

[collapse]

I also love that we don't have a transmigrator MC but a transmigrated ML instead. Seeing him through our MCs eyes is so well done and I also love the character of our ML. He is just such a respectful ML and so mature despite his rather young age. Both MC and ML are just very likable charakters and I really really enjoyed reading about their journey and immersing myself in their world. <<less

how the MC retaliated disproportionately to the ppl who "provoked" him. Or maybe such retaliation was justified but I just don't like that unapologetic evil part of him and the ML's condonation of it.

He brought disaster to the ppl who's not on his side and was unnecessarily cruel for the slightest provocation. Lyk we get it, you're a heavenly beauty but not everyone who covets you deserves to die, you know. He also acts as if he has no family to worry about. There are crimes that not only calls for his own death but for his whole family but he has no hesitation to do it. Tho ofc his plans always worked bec he's a genius and has a halo! But the lack of concern to do "bad things" when they're not yet at the point where he has to do such things, it's a bit of a turn off for me.

[collapse]

My fave character is
Spoiler

Xi Rong, the eunuch. He's so much lyk the MC in terms of ambitiousness, the scheming. When he delivered that last speech while being waterboarded about how the evil things he did will come back to him as a retribution, he kinda gagged our MC. But at the same time, why was the MC upset abt it when everything XR said was correct. When he was planning those things he had no hesitation but when someone laid down that those might cause bad karma, he's suddenly upset??? Gurll if ur evil, have the guts to admit it and not be upset when ppl mention it.

The only difference between MC And XR is that XR has no halo so during their (XR and the MC) confrontation, he inevitability lost, was tortured, and forced to kill himself in a garden he and his half brother is fond of. So for the readers who hated XR but loooved MC, they need to reflect on it.
So between these 2 evil characters, I like XR more because he knew what he was doing and the only reason he's in that situation is bec he got outwitted. No hypocrisy and he accepted its consequences. That tragic ending and his concern for XL also gave a delicious conclusion to his character. I loved it so much that I decided to end things there.

Despite my ramblings, it's undeniably a good novel that kept me entertained for days. <<less

I now fully understand why this deserves its rating — and then some! When it comes to complex characters, this novel has definitely got it. Even the plot is so unique OML despite the common historical setting. Ack. IDK what to say outside of its tell worth reading.

Summary: As stated in the summary, the MC (Gong, first introduced as Lu Wancheng) transmigrates into a novel as a sickly cannon fodder that didn't have much to do with the plot. He drops into the role on the night of his... more>> marriage with the ML (Shou, Lin Qingyu), who really despises the fact that he was forced to marry him. The two start off as adversaries, of a sort. The ML refused to like him, while the MC is just so likeable it's almost painful T_T.

Ahhh this novel is hard to describe. It's filled with ups and downs. Even though you're told of the ending of each version of the MC early, after getting to know the characters, you still can't help but care about everything. It's just... really really good at making you care. And well, that's what novels are supposed to do! (BTW, the translation was still unfinished when I read this, but the MTL was 80% readable, so I was left hanging!)

CHARACTERS: 10/10

When it comes to characters, this novel is definitely a winner. Not only is each one (at least the main characters and the important side characters) so real they're about to jump off the page, but each one also undergoes slow development along the way.

MC (Lu Wancheng)

Our MC is the opposite of your typical Gong! In fact, he's my favorite type. He's still very responsible, confident, and competitive. It's just that his personality is not stoic and abstinent. Quite opposite, in fact. He's very talkative and very casual. Ahhh he's just super charming DX (BTW. If you're usually not into Gong!MC's you shouldn't have a problem with this one, because it's a dual-protagonist kind of book.)

ML (Lin Qingyu)

Our Shou takes on the role of the cold beauty of this book. He's truly quite cold, even cruel. His main goal in life is to comprehend everything he can about medicine... and poisons *blushingface. jpg* LOL. As mentioned, he really hates the MC at first, but he couldn't help but fall for the other's salted-fish charms.

ROMANCE: 10/10

The one sided enemies-to-lovers was interes LMFAO. The ML put through so much resistance, and it made everything feel worth it. Their overall journey to falling love was a bit tragic, but ultimately very sweet.

SETTING: 8.5/10

As a character-driven novel, the setting plays second fiddle most of the time, and is just an amusing playground. As with was based on a novel, some world settings and character settings, despite being based on the culture of historical China, were skewed so that the plot would fit in. I didn't mind this personally, cause what I really cared for was the characters. But yeah, it's true that the setting wasn't as important here as it would be in many of the other Danmei (which are more plot-driven).

PLOT: 9/10

When it comes to plot, thinkingface. jpg. It's a bit mixed. The internal plot was really great. I mean the MC dying multiple times LMFAO and the external plot (political intrigue), while not as interesting to me, did a good job encouraging the development of the characters. So, all in all, I think it was well done.

RATING: 4.69/5

This is a story I really don't regret reading. I held back on reading it for so long because I wanted to wait for the TL to finish *big sigh* but in the end I couldn't hold it anymore DX. Glad I did! I was almost thinking that I was running out of stories to read LOL. Turns out I just wasn't looking hard enough! Anyway, definitely worth it! If only for the Gong!MC mannn he's so charming! <<less

Honestly this is definitely at the top of my underrated series list!

I picked this up on a whim, but I couldn't put it down after! I'm not great at expressing my opinions, but Qingyu is so obviously an amazing and fierce character, easily one of my favourite danmei shous (I love a fierce, smart and nerdy beauty). The gong is also very likeable, he's funny, but he's not a fool. He may be a lighthearted and a lazy salted fish, but he's smart and strong when it comes to something... more>> (or someone hehe) he cares about.

If you like danmei that focus largely on relationship development (like I do) then you'll love this! The summary basically tells you what you should expect, but even knowing what would happen (in a sense), I found this story so emotionally impactful. Overall it's so funny, moving and a little morally grey. I have a soft and squishy heart, so I admittedly cried a few times.

I should also say, I loved the extras on this one!! <<less

Beautiful story with one of the best relationship developments I’ve ever read.

It ever so rare that both the MC and ML are compelling characters in their own rights, and managing to achieve that shows how good this book is.

it made me cry then laugh, eliciting more emotions from me than a book has in a while,

5/5 from me, will read again

I read this in the raws on JJWXC, and it's such a good novel!

Even if the outline of the novel is sketched out in the summary, the characters are so vivid and endearing, and you'll be invested in their journey. The novel is all about the romance and character growth of our dear salted fish and his petty, vicious (lovable) doctor.

Such a great read. Gets you choked up with a few gut stabs, but then gives you really sweet candy right after. I cried and laughed and shouted into the nearest pillow at different points of the story.

Something I can reread in the future with less pain because I know that the happiness will be worth it.

I came across a recommendation for this novel on X (twitter). This story does not disappoint. I did not expect to like it this much.

The story focuses on the main couple deliberately leaving all sorts of loose ends on the side characters. However, I liked the story so much that this didn't really get in the way of the story for me.

I think what stood out the most to me in the story that I really liked was that the main couple was not a stereo typical all bad or... more>> all good type of characters. The ML and the MC were two people that did both good things and bad things because they needed to do to stay together and after because they wanted to be together. What started off as a forced marriage ended up turning into a love that lasted three lifetimes plus a trip into modern times in the extra snippets at the end.

No spoilers here I highly recommend you go read it. <<less

➺ 4.5/5 🌟

i never expected to love this novel as much as I did but this is actually a pleasant surprise.

the synopsis of this is pretty much clear and straightforward. The lazybone but smart ML will experience death twice and will transmigrate three times in different bodies, and he will be married with the MC in those three times. It was constructed in a lighthearted and funny way so here I thought I was prepared emotionally and could take it lightly. But those 'death scenes' broke me.

this is overall not... more>> a very heavy novel. With the MC and ML's bickering and their entertaining interactions with each other, I sometimes forgot that this has some heavy themes. But when it wants to get emotional, tears are to be expected. I actually spent midnight reading with swollen eyes.

the characters, especially the MC, are not the typical kind-hearted, 'seeking justice' kind of characters. The MC is smart, manipulative, ruthless and a black-bellied beauty who holds a grudge even in the most simple matter. He was never the one who starts the issue but provoke him once and you'll definitely stay in his book of revenge forever and you'll never be able to live in peace. He's indifferent to most people, except his own family and people. The ML on the other hand is a young man transmigrated in this world and considered himself a salted fish. I've never encountered such lazy character in my life, lazy to point that he only tried 'jerking off' once when he was a teenager and never did it again because it was too tiring lol only the MC can pull him out of his bed. But despite being a salted fish, he's also clever and can be quite powerful when he really puts an effort. He's a little less 'evil' than the MC but he LOVES watching his baobei do ruthless things with other people who triggered him, even lending him a hand most of the time.

i swear, their character and relationship dynamic is the peak of this novel. A power couple doing bad things together? Of course i'll love it! The side characters are also quite interesting, especially shen huaishi. He deserves the whole world! He's such a precious cinnamon roll in a body of a dangerous assassin and I'm glad the author gave him a satisfactory ending. I also loved the extra chapters where the three of them transmigrated in the modern world. I want more of their antics!!

i would love to recommend this to anyone, as long as you're fine with black-bellied characters. <<less

I regret not reading this sooner...

MC and ML are a very realistic arranged marriage couple who started from a indifferent/hatred, gradually developing to mutual dependence, then to love. It's a sweet relationship where romance doesn't seem forced or rushed. MC is not as generous or noble as everyone thought he was, ridden with ugly contempt, vengeful and pettiness. He's always hid it well, that even his closest servants always thought of him as someone who could do no wrong. But ML was the only one who knew his inner self.... more>> And despite his goals to be a salted-fish, ML would always be there to cover for MC, shelter him from ML's toxic family.

I can't recommend this enough. <<less

Wahhhhhh both leads complements each other!! Our MC (our bride) can stand on his own and do bad things🤣 with the support of ML hahaha

As the story goes, we can see how they fell in love with each other and liked how MC was straightforward with his feeling

And so many twist on the story!! Like how the ML will transmigrate /go to another body. Some scenes will touch your heartstrings cause thjs novel touches the meaning of: death especially to a loved one.

Definitely worth the read!

MC and ML's relationship makes you stand on your tippy toes, never having enough of it. Their tenderness and banters with each other as well as plotting mu*ders at the same time are so entertaining.

Like what someone else said. This is a gem. Being spoiled by the summary of the story doesn't take anything away from it, but makes the experience a whole lot complex. You know what's going to happen and yet the characters don't and you still can't help empathizing with them.

I'm currently reading this one and it's so d*mn great!

The Main Characters:

Lin Qingyu (MC; Shou) : I love him so much! I love how petty he is at times (and he knows it lol) , and I love how wicked he is! LQY is smart, cold, and distant. He loves to hold grudges and will get back at you in the stealthiest way possible. ML said he is most beautiful when he's wicked and I agree with my whole heart!

Lu Wancheng (ML; Seme) : I LOVE HIM AAAAAA, I... more>> WANT MYSELF A LU WANCHENG. Why? Because of his personality! He's humorous and may act dumb at times but he's scheming and I love it! His personality reminds me of Gojo Satoru (JJK) and Osamu Dazai (BSD) , I mean, I'M A SUCKER FOR ENTP TYPES (or if not exactly ENTP, then, ENTP vibes lol) .

Their Chemistry:

I LOVE THEIR CHEMISTRY SO MUCH! They were like two villains, scheming and all, and I love them for it! I swear I'm not envious of that couple goal QAQ. The romance between them is slow and that's great and logical given LQY's personality. They were friends (a confidant at that to each other) at the first arc and as it's currently ongoing, they'll surely develop their relationship in the later chapters.

The Plot:

So far, the plot's great and I don't have any complaints about it! It's currently ongoing so I really can't tell but this novel is promising!

Another thing that I want to point out is

Spoiler

LU WANCHENG'S DEATHS MAKES ME SAD, SERIOUSLY. But what I'm most anticipating is Lin Qingyu's reaction to it! I'm not sadistic or what, I just want to see how he looks like when he's hurt and is crumbling down because he lost Lu Wancheng. Currently, there are 38 chapters in CG (Thank you for translating this novel, CG!), and the 38th chapter is the first death of LWC. ML and MC were friends at this point so LQY felt empty because of it but I read the MTL and he'll move on from it (?) The first time LQY cried in the novel was when Lu Wancheng's spirit (in his original appearance) came to see Lin Qingyu after not seeing each other for months (?) because LWC's soul at that time went to General Gu (who was also mentioned in the first 38 chapters) and he died in the war (mentioned in the novel's synopsis). Lin Qingyu broke down because of it, and you can see how much he love Lu Wancheng at that point! I can't wait to read all of the chapters in the future!

[collapse]

In Conclusion:

READ THIS NOVEL, IT'S F*CKING GOOD! <<less

I was attracted to this novel due to its blurb, while I can say that it did not stray from the premise timeline (in fact it hardly changed 'till the end), I feel that it was not enough. Gravity I guess? (and the changes from the blurb in terms of how they actually marry in the succeeding lives) Anyway, I want to sing praises for the peculiarity of these protagonists, having the urge to shake people's shoulders. I felt so emotional witnessing how their relationship grew. Except Life1 where the... more>> two got married due to the imperial decree, their relationship was never forced, there was no coercion or any type of drugs needed for them to decide to be together. That's what makes it fantastic. Normally you would feel awkward but the author skillfully put together the plot and at the same time, the protagonists' dynamics. They retained the ruthlessness, cunning and pettiness of the characters while balancing it with the right portion of sweetness. The naturalness of how their personality was integrated to the start as well as every parting- that's what makes it beautiful as well as heart-wrenching. Don't get me wrong, it was not that heavy. In fact, there's a large comedic tone especially when they are together. I want to say it's fluffy but it would undermine the genius of the appeal of the story.

Before I forgot, remember this: morally ambiguous.

There's no hesitation or inner struggle of trying to stay good when tackling the matter about their transgressors. They are very straight-forward: do no wrong towards us, we'll leave you alone.

  • 1-40 Sickly Young Master
  • 41-101 War General
  • 102-119 Emperor

[Male Lead] would rather would just lie around like a salted fish but fate want him to move. He's pretty competitive, the other motivation to do something he does not want to do is that he hates losing to another. Hm, he's a good guy- shy, charismatic, and bold.

Independent main character. Career-focused. Lin Qinyu is a person of his own right, he's pretty capable and would not always indulge his husband. He is strong and principled (his own). Lin Qinyu possess a clear goal in mind and would not hesitate to do anything to achieve it. Personally, I love how he slowly unraveled his facade in front of [male lead]. It was what made me truly feel satisfied throughout the whole novel it was also the one that made it hurt more.

They do feel jealousy but no drastic actions! :> What makes it funnier is that it's not people that they feel most jealous of. For Lin Qinyuan, it's the [male lead's] love for sleeping while for [male lead], it's their children he feels jealous of, the gu worms. RIP eldest daughter. (NOT MPREG, it's a wormmy)
