Xia Xingcheng, with average acting skills and appearance, had been a small star in the entertainment industry for six years. But one day, a famous director invited him to act in a gay movie titled “Gradual Distance” with numerous award-winning movie emperor Yang Youming. In the movie, they had a sweet love; out of it, there was polite coldness. In the movie, they had a sad ending; out of it, there were ambiguous feelings. The contrast between what was in the movie and what was outside of it often made Xia Xingcheng unable to find himself. Because of Yang Youming’s guidance, he had stepped into the ranks of actors, but also because of Yang Youming, he couldn’t distinguish between what was reality and what wasn’t.

Xia Xingcheng didn’t expect that the movie would finally push him into the abyss of pain and happiness.

Both the main story and the extras were very well written.
Spoiler

I actually almost forgotten about the main story after reading the extra chapters especially the ABO edition, lmao!

[collapse]

The story is simple, nothing complicated. When they finally recognised their feelings, it's really sweet and fluffy. I also understand the MC's family reaction, so I can't really blame them.
Spoiler

Good thing it ended really well and accepted their relationship.

[collapse]

I love Dong Dong so much aside from the main CP, he's so adorable! Lol.

I'd also like to thank the translator for the effort and time translating this novel.

Honestly speaking, I agree with others opinion about MC becoming a lovesick idiot later on in the story. It's too much to the point you question where his previous rationality went.

But still, I gave this story a five star for various reasons.

1. ML's character build up made me uncomfortable at first but later made me so much more appreciative of him. Maybe it's because I was too used to reading about OP ML's who can resolve things easily for their lovers. Our ML here isn't entirely like that. Sure, he... more>> has connections and title as a film emperor but he's a close portrayal to a much more realistic direction as compared to other ML's. Even I get frustrated and helpless to the fact that he can't sweep every worry away with his standing.

2. ML's maturity, I loved it. While MC did lean towards being a love sick idiot as they say, fortunately, ML didn't have an 'impressive' brain hole that I got too fed up with after reading various novels.

3. It gave us an in-depth view of how filming a movie works and it's toll on actors. Even I was immersed. In other novels, they rotate mainly on the protagonists---well, it did here too but there's also the movies that are immersive for me. I just got glimpses and brush overs from other novels with how they describe the characters that the protagonist's portray like how 'handsome', cold, like a concealed blade etc etc. I just loved this.

4. There isn't excessive drama. Sure, face-slapping scenes are satisfying but really, just how often is another person from the entertainment business get dissatisfied with you enough to cause you trouble for some trivialities? Sure, there were some here too but I find it excessive in other novels sometimes as they seem to offend people left and right intentionally or not.

To sum it up, I really liked this story and enjoyed it. Someday, I'll probably come back and read it all over again. <<less

This novel feels very complete, meaning it has a little bit of everything that makes a novel good... everything well measured and at a good pace. No worries about angst being dragged out too long or an overload of fluff, s*x or s*upid villains. It's all quite realistic and coherent. The POV is heavily on the MC in the main story but look forward to the ML's POV in the extras. Midway through, I got somewhat frustrated with ML's lack of courage that stops him from pursuing MC, but he... more>> does change after realising that he was "doomed" lol... his own words lol...
Another interesting part of this novel is the in-depth exploration of what it means to be an actor, an immersive actor, and the emotional load and consequences of such a state of mind. It is not just a questioning of what's real or fiction but the acceptance, understanding and resolution of this immersion. Of course not all actors think or behave the same. But this novel gave me a greater insight into this profession. I would not be surprised if the author has some first-hand experience with the chinese movie industry. <<less

I'm writing the review while reading the novel.

You may find the sequence wrt progression of the novel.

The slap was totally unexpected. I literally heard it in my mind. (¯―¯٥)

Poor MC, this is the only showbiz novel in which I could understand the entanglement of emotions because of inability to differentiate between role and reality. Even I, as reader, can't differentiate. (In many showbiz novels I have read the MC using Experimental Theory for a role and becoming messed up but never I could immersed myself like in this novel.)

The ending of the movie, "Gradual Distance", they acted is so satisfying.
Spoiler

FJY's decision of not giving in just because of love and leaving as to not wanting to be third party was very good.

The confession :
Spoiler

the MC confesses to the ML in chapter 64. His pursuing and confession seems just a little bit similar to MC of "Green Plum Island"

MC was not the only one too immersed in the act. It also affected the ML as well.

There is no angst as such. Just some time apart to sort out their feelings properly. Good novel

This is really a nice and great novel with a brilliant story line. Although the end seems a bit off for me but it really describe how entertainment industry work like. I just encounter this novel a couple days ago and decide to read it since it already completed. All I want to say is I'm not regret.

I actually have a lot to comment but I choose not to, because you definitely come back again later and re read this novel, and that's is what I'm going to do.

Give it... more>> a try, you will sees the dark side and consequences which every actors and actress feel. <<less

I think this is the best modern danmei I've read so far. The romance was sweet, the MC had compelling journey of growth, the ML has a personality and isn't there just to be the love interest, and the plot/film stuff was actually really interesting.

I want to point out some of the things that were unique in this novel/ stuff that was great that usually isn't done very well in other novels.

The films that the MC acts in are interesting in and of itself, which I think creates layers of... more>> intrigue. The romance/tension between the ML is engaging, the MC's journey in becoming a mature actor was engaging, and even the plot of the films he acts in are engaging. Usually, in other novels I get pretty interested in the romantic plot (ie: how the MC and ML slowly come together) but the plot and other stuff that goes on falls pretty flat. The author does an amazing job of making the non-romance related plot stuff interesting by weaving in the romance with the movie stuff, if that makes sense.

Antagonist isn't one dimensional. I think there might be several antagonists in the story but the one that I really liked was the one at the end. The antagonist wasn't painted as this person huddled over in the corner scheming and rubbing their hands together. It was a little more subtle and this person's motivations are interesting. Not saying they were good motivations/reasons, but it was just a lot more interesting than usual danmei antagonists that are like aRgH I'm gonna Mess with the MC for no Reason followed by face slapping. The point I'm trying to make is that the antagonist isn't one dimensional, and this made the drama more compelling. And of course, the better the drama the sweeter the romance, at least I think so!

Interesting side characters and female characters! Some of this ties into the point I made about interesting antagonists. The author doesn't go that far into fleshing out every side character's backstories, but was effective in making them interesting and they weren't awkwardly forced into scenes just to move the plot forward. This includes the director, the MC's manager and the assistant (I think her name was HuaHua), ML's ex, MC's brother and sister-in-law, etc. Just an interesting cast that did do the job of helping push the MC and ML together/progress the plot, but they also had their own thoughts and feelings, they weren't static, they were their own people. <<less

okay, i’m not a big fan of actor stories generally but I was interested in this one because well... okay, i’ll admit. I got art baited.

BUT FCK MAN IT WAS SO GOOD!!

the starting is kinda slow paced, but it sets up everything, and in the beginning I was just like “meh”.. but and when they first got together I was like “hmm something is wrong” but now look at me, it’s become one of my fav danmei novels! THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS STORY is to read it as a... more>> whole story. because only then can you see the character growth and development and how the two actors improve each other. plus, their relationship is really healthy and dynamics so goddamn cute so. patient, doting dilf and his impulsive, mischievous boyfriend, INNIT GREAT

also wtf YYM.. YOU FREAKING HOTTIE-SEXY-MF-DILF!!!!! grrr bark bark. the true sexy part of this story is when he told everyone he was gay and accepted that he was... way too sexy that scene was. hoho yoda lines! anyways XXC is my and YYM’s baby boo and peace out <<less

Let's face it, if I was in MC's shoes, I'd fall for my undeniably sexy co-star too...

I'm biased because showbiz plots are my type of crack. Maybe I'm just superficial, but my brain cells really thrive on the stuff. I skimmed through other people's reviews & took note that the plot was somewhat realistic- an adjective I don't really associate showbiz stories with. But I gave it a shot since the whole premise of "developing longing feelings after filming" baited me in. HOWEVER, the true hook lied in chapter 2... more>> when I found out that the ML was 37 years old. My daddy kink siren instantly sounded; I was strapped in for the ride.

"The fact that you're not willing to accept it is a good thing, the thing I'm most afraid of is you not caring."—c107

If you prefer a romance that's more mature, different from your usual bouts of plot-armored, sugarcoated novels, this may be in line with your criterium. If you liked Your Distance or at least the vibe of it, then this is probably your cup of tea. ML gives me the same vibes as the magnanimous Bai Changyi (YD) & I'm all for it. As much as I love my black-bellied alpha males, I do carry an obsession for my more mature, patient male leads. For the sort of whimsical & energetic MC, he's the perfect fit- calm, doting, respectful. I really love the efforts in communication in this story. There was a lot of drama & some angst, but it was handled quite well. I understand that this story took the steeper route, incorporating themes of h*mophobia, etc. It's uncomfy, but I do like how it all turned out at the end. Both ML & MC find strength in each other & in spite of other people's (irrelevant) opinions, they're faithful to their promises. A really good, healthy relationship- not something I would typically say for an entertainment industry CP lol

Extras are what's up because they're in ML's POV & I am so so so down!

Update: Yooo wtf these extras are spicy <<less

a rare find. that I had to mtl the rest even the extras but I went back to it once it's completed because it's soooo hard to move on. also I can finally write a review because the main story's done....

i don't usually read stuff revolving around entertainment business. it's always the typical, clichéd, superficial elements we see. let's face it, showbusiness is already boring enough in real life. not to mention how media exaggerates celebrity scandals. and the 2D/novel depiction of this world is not an exception.

but mingrixingcheng was... more>> different. not only the writing style is goddamn good, but also id like to say that the author has respect to the craft that is film/acting. they either have done extensive research or is highly involved in the industry. honestly, we'll never know.

the only thing that's ugly about it is censorship. but characters? the supporting characters? couple dynamics? writing style? and how balanced all the elements are??? the build up??

chef's kiss.

the way we can see not only the main character's point of view but also the characters they play. the way we see the starting point of them falling in love with each other... when the characters they play start becoming real. this isn't new. a lot of artists in real life have fallen in love after being in a project together.

but what's the significance of the characters they were playing to their real selves? what does the director aim to convey by making this movie?

the film has bad ending. (yes and that will be mentioned early on in the story, don't be surprised.)

but does the reality have to end the same way?

anyways I hope this novel gets more attention! and thank u so much for translating this novel! owe you my life because I got out of slump fast thanks to it :) <<less

This novel is so beautiful. This is a novel in a modern setting, where MC (XXC) gets invited to play a lead role in a same-s*x movie with the older established actor ML (YYM). The first part of the story focuses on them acting together (and developing feelings). After that the story pushes forward to them working those feelings out and XXC growing as an actor.

The characters:

XXC and YYM and truly fleshed out characters, and their relationship is realistic. Their relationship doesn't start off perfect and they have their difficulties.... more>> But their romance is super sweet and you can truly see they love each other. There's a good amount of (slight) angst and drama in this.

The translation:

Perfect. Frequent. 5/5. The translation is very good, very understandable, flows smoothly, and has little to no errors.

Overall I strongly recommend; read for realistic characters and relationships. (Also, go check out the manhwa. The art is super pretty, although tapas westernized their names). <<less

Okay, I don't identify as straight. As someone who identifies as such, I wasn't offended by some danmei tropes used prolifically in this context because... almost ever BL written in Asia is like this. They are usually written by straight women who know little to nothing about real gay relationships and make poor assumptions about things like s*x and love between men based on their fellow rotten women's writings (delusions). They almost always make an assumption about top versus bottom in terms of personality, age, looks, finances, etc — because... more>> it's simpler to understand gay relationships that way. Let's not mention all the erroneous nonsense that pops up when they write smut scenes (a gay guy's hips won't hurt after s*x, but their a*us might! rotflmfao). But face it, people don't read fiction because they want to hear a true story. If we really want to read a BL novel by an extremely competent author, we'll deliberately choose a gay male author who actually knows what love between men is all about, or at least something written by a straight person that has won an award. Most people reading this stuff are too lazy to check the author's orientation or even care about it. So if you write a review about how homophobic this novel is, you really ought to say the same about almost every other BL story (these nonsense tropes extend to Western BL literature, but usually Western BL authors are more open to s*xual relationships with less restrictions or the so-called "reversible couple" dynamic).

About this novel: I did really like it, given the limitations and cliches of most popular BL. As a queer person, I can empathize with characters who insist they are straight, because that's called "internalized h*mophobia" and it happens to many gay/queer people who are raised to believe that loving someone of the same s*x is wrong or immoral. As someone who has read many Western BL stories in the theme of "age play" or the "daddy/little" kink, I don't find anything wrong with the ML treating MC as a child. This is a completely normal way of interacting with your same s*x lover, especially in gay male relationships where there's an age gap. I think that the author wanted to indulge in writing a daddy/little kink novel but knew that such a topic would make it impossible to sell the book within China, so they resorted to censoring the majority of that part of the characters' relationship and personality quirks. I firmly believe that between consenting adults, there's absolutely nothing wrong with indulging in some age play (called DDLG among the BD*M community), which is a kink that can enliven relationships in terms of both the emotional and s*xual connection. Please don't shame others who enjoy this dynamic, or belittle an author who enjoys writing about this kind of dynamic, even when that author doesn't have the courage or means to write about such a taboo topic in a region where it's censored. Thank god that nowadays, if a Chinese author wants to publish a taboo BL novel, they can just go to that Korean online publisher (I think it's called myrics) where they can skirt the limitations of censorship. I don't know if that gets them in trouble... Anyway, please don't skip reading this novel just based on a few negative reviews here. If you try it and like it, you'd probably regret skipping it before, right? <<less

This must be the best mature romance danmei I've ever read so far. I love how their love developed from start to end. I greatly admired how the author showed how their budding feelings were intermingled with the characters they're portraying for the movie how they eventually accepted both feelings as part of them.

I don't usually write reviews but I make an exception. This novel is very well written and translator did a well good job. Character and relationship growth was wholesome. The journey of MC and ML's discovery of their sexuality and love for each other was beautifully written, the sense of vulnerability was really well written. This can make a beautiful drama.

This was really cute. I had some minor issues here and there and some parts were forced, but I really enjoyed the story. I won't go into detail as many others already have, but I really like the MC and ML, the rest of the characters are weak, but that's okay they don't matter much to this story 😁

mostly the people around the MC are annoying and I found their character set ups boring, the brother especially.

[collapse]

On a side note I decided to skim the manhua and I will give a little warning for those who are curious
Spoiler

the art is well done, it follows the story nicely but the official translation Americanized the names. I mean a big part of the story are the MC and MLs name but they changed the name to Asher and Remington. No Ming ge! He calls him Remmy.... they also get rid of 1 of the twins, only Dong Dong in the manhua 🥺

I did like how the manhua integrated the ML's thought processes during the initial filming so we see the ML falling for the MC, it basically took the first extra chapter and showed it in real time. I wish they would have shown more of the ML's thoughts. This is one story that I wanted both sides thoughts

I dont uds the bad reviews. I really enjoyed this book so much. It was sweet and real and I liked seeing how the MC grew and how the ML healed. I also love how they're so different with everyone else but can be their true selves with each other.

It was fun peeking into the world of acting as well.

Not much angst, but sufficient obstacles to keep it interesting.

Everybody praised this story.

But for me, it was interesting at the beginning, simple in the climax and plain tone deaf in bringing it all to the finishing touch. That it got a bit boring.

The real of real there was the family's (esp the big bro, his wife) reaction, and the agents' opinion and their way in wanting to handle the relationship.

This story was very well-written with realistic plot and well developed characters.

At some point, the story will make the readers think that the two MC's are just in love because they were affected by their movie characters, however the author drew a clear line of when the MC actually started to like "ML" and not just his character.

There was a clear line between admiration and romantic like, however it became blurred as one started to have an ambiguous relationship to the subject of their admiration. This is what I saw... more>> from MC's character development. He admired ML and started to like him as Fang Jianyuan, however there was one chapter that gave emphasis to the fact that while Fang Jianyuan started to fall for Yu Haiyang, the MC also started to develop feelings from admiration to romantic like because of Yang Youming's actions himself, and not as his movie character. And I think this chapter drew a clear line with MC's feelings between reality and movie in the story.

Spoiler

Some are also confused and giving bad reviews because of their sexuality etc. The ML was and is "gay" from the very start. He might be married in the past, however through out the whole story it was clear that his ex-wife Yuan Qian was the one who pursued him but he was never actually attracted. ML kept acting with different female co-stars, however unlike with MC he was also never attracted or develop any physical attraction with any woman. In the extras, it was then cleared up more how the ML entered the relationship with his ex-wife because of the idea of "trying it out" suggested by his ex-wife, however their relationship never worked and ended up being a mess where the ML became exhausted both physically and psychologically. He never felt devoted and was the passive one in their relationship compared to his later relationship to MC. He was gay, but found it out later after he developed s*xual attraction and romantic feelings for a man (MC). MC on the other hand might be pan or bi. It was said in one of the chapters that he himself know that he wasn't gay because he was also attracted to female in the past. But it wasn't cleared up what his actual sexuality is.

[collapse]

The conflicts of the story was realistic, especially the idea that not everyone around them was accepting of their relationship (since I read a lot of stories where even tho the couple quite turned out taboo, every side character just accepts it like it's nothing out of the ordinary). ML was more than 10 yrs older than MC, had an ex-wife, and a top tier actor, while MC's career can be easily crushed with some unacceptable gossip. There were people bound to reject this arrangement in fear for MC's future. The characters, especially the two main one was perfectly fleshed out. The side characters have big roles in the story, have their own personality, and not just there to be a decoration. The author wrote each drama as if you were entering a different world inside a novel. You'll be curious and sympathize with the movie's characters also, not just to ML and MC. I'm still curious what happened to Fang Jianyuan and Yu Haiyang in real life tho.

This is getting too long, but I still have a lot to say. I'll sum it up to please read this story, it's worth it. <<less
