Forever and Always, My Childhood Friend is the Cutest Girl in the World

Description

I’m a second year high schooler, Tohru Yonekura. I have a childhood friend, Rin Asakura. She has good grades and is quite the athlete. Admittedly, she has a bit of an attitude and is tough to deal with sometimes.

I’ve always had unrequited feelings for her, but she always seemed so distant. Every day I would constantly mull over how to shorten the distance between us.

However one day, I noticed a change in Rin. She would invite me to the movies, treat me to some homemade cooking and hug me tightly when we hung out at home.

With every passing day, I could feel the walls between us starting to break down.

Me and my insincere childhood friend: this is our story, our bittersweet romcom.

Translator here, thought I would give my (hopefully unbiased) thoughts.

I find that this type of story is pretty rare in WNs nowadays, one that take in place in a realistic setting and focus solely on the character and their budding and ever-growing relationships. Stuff like this is refreshing and definitely makes for a nice read since it directly appeals to what I like. The dynamic between Tohru and Rin is a strong and seeing it change and grow over the course of the story is an emotional one to say... more>> the least. Both of them grow as they learn more about each other and their circumstances.

The romance is a simple one, but well executed. It plays hand in with the theme of reaching for your dreams and seeing how the romance plays out with that in mind is heartwarming. Both Tohru and Rin go on their own journeys and come out stronger by the end.

The prose, at least on the Japanese side, are simple but effective when they need to be. While the author tends to enjoy using a lot of analogies and metaphors in his writing, I think it generally conveys all the emotions pretty well. When the story needs to be emotional, the writing conveys that to a tee, with short lines that are concise and deliver a lot of punch. The more detailed explanations about writing are pretty fascinating to read through and I love the technical aspects thrown in. I hope I was able to convey at least a tenth of the emotion of the Japanese prose in my translations.

Anyways, this is a nice solid romance read and I definitely recommend it for anyone interested in romances stories of this sort. <<less

I collapsed on the ground several times and had to be taken to the hospital from reading this novel. The doctors said it was the worst case of diabetes they had ever seen. Read at your own risk.

It's so sweet...

Read up to and including Chapter 54, which seems to be the end of the main work, plus the Author's Afterward right after. I will not be reading the sequel/continuation later and stopped reading at this point.

Overall, it was just okay, but it's not my kind of story. I've seen comments and such that it's a really sweet story focused on two childhood friends, and that is true. It is sweet, there isn't much actual conflict or drama in their present time, and the story doesn't stray from that. But... more>> it doesn't do much more than that.

As I said, there isn't much conflict, drama, and actual things going, and the "progression" is a very slow burn. Many chapters feel overly lengthy or just repeat things like the MC's self-doubt at times or just lots of descriptions of food that the FMC makes. Chapter 54 is

Spoiler

essentially the two getting together despite basically knowing each others' feelings near the start of the story.

[collapse]

The flow of this work felt a bit repetitive honestly:

Spoiler

Morning has little sister eating something sweet, MC being FMC, school and/or flashback to when they were younger and meeting/getting closer, FMC gradually doing things to get more proactively closer to MC like making him food or hanging out, MC writing novel later or so, and just rinse and repeat that for pretty much the whole work.

[collapse]

I get the reason for the MC delaying the

Spoiler

confession despite basically guessing and knowing Rin's feeling, but I don't particularly enjoy it since there really isn't a guarantee that he'd ever be published. Yes Rin believes in him and he does get the offer at the end, but I also found it really convenient timing how timely the publisher sent that novel publication offer the week just after his 10 day writing spurt.

[collapse]

I think I would have enjoyed it more if the story had some actual drama, faster development, or something else. I kept wanting to drop it and almost did multiple times, but since reviews praised it so much, I grinded through it hoping it would get better, but it just did the same thing for all of its length. The few side characters mentioned are completely uninteresting, like the mother, the little sister, etc, and I think flashbacks tend to grind stories to a halt when they're emphasized this much (too much in my opinion - I prefer more present-day storytelling, and stuff like Rin's PoV basically just rehashed it all again, which was annoying). I did actually find some interest in their flashbacks like being curious how they met and such, but most of the flashbacks weren't very enjoyable for me.

Overall, it wasn't completely terrible, but it was just okay. Has a happy but simple end, but I think it could've been told in a lot less chapters. Some monologues felt ramble-y, and some moments when they got sentimental over each other or recalled the past didn't contribute or just repeated moments a bit more than I like. <<less

This novel is purely wholesome and sweet. I just randomly found this at the middle of the night while novel surfing, and I did not regret reading this. As of now this is one the of best romance novels I've ever read.

This is just a fluffy story with a well written plot of friendship to romantic relationship.

We have an adorable FL, a caring but a bit ignorant MC as well as fantastic support characters.

The move from friends to lovers was very well done, it wasn't rushed nor was it to slow to come. You got to know how and why they came to love each other which was a nice touch, since it'll make you all the more emotional and cheer them on harder.

The speed of progression was superb! There was... more>> no useless drama everywhere nor major understandings. Just friendship to lovers with no stop along the way~ and once you start reading you will get captivated by it and won't let go as you reach the ending, even then you'll still want more and more.

The writing has the perfect balance between talking and descriptions, and none of it was boring. The interactions were fun to read as well as touching at times and the descriptions are kept short and simple but still gave a clear image, tho part of that might be due to the amazing TLs.

Overall I give this story a 5/5 on everything~

This is an excellent childhood romance story. It made me cry a few times. Was truly a pleasure to read. I really love it and can't recommend it enough! I really appreciate the passion in the story.

The organization of some of the events and the writing itself are both are fantastic. Just a really solid work all around. I agree that this is a hidden gem.

A hidden gem, that is what I can call this series.

It's short compared to the pther romcom novels out there. Even so this series is good enough with the backstories of MC and FMC being told in between the chapters you can easily see the emotions put into the story...

Well, I'm looking forward to the afterstory or sequel that the author is currently working on. 🤗🤗

Wow! An honest, sweet story about a very cute childhood friend and a determined fleshed out boy. The flow of the chapters are easy to understand and the translation is top notch, which makes it a very easy read. The conflict and reasons for the characters are presented in a good manner and not your typical unrealistic cliches.

Why only 4 stars?

There are no side characters or true conflict. This novel showcased to me how important actual side characters are in a romantic novel even if they are not completely fleshed... more>> out. Some chapters felt a bit too samey due to the fact that there were no side characters.

Another reason is that it can be jarring the way flashbacks are inserted into the story and again, felt unnecessary (not talking about fMC POV).

At the end I have a feeling of being satisfied after a meal and not wanting to eat dessert (the side stories). <<less

It was a really great story, I didn’t have huge expectations or anything when I started cuz I’ve just been binging romance recently, but it was really ducking good, as others have said, it’s super wholesome and finally getting to the point where they convey their feelings it’s very satisfying. This is the last chapter I’m reading cuz it’s a very good conclusion for the story, and I don’t want to ruin such a good ending by having to wait for updates lol.

It was a rough start, something about their interactions and the FMC really put me off, but I'm glad I kept reading. Good fluff, but the MC is annoying. It's the standard japanese "I like you, you like me, but lets not be in a relationship because I'm not good enough" tropes.

So I just finished this earlier and all I can feel is satisfaction upon the end of the story, everything from the characters, their personalities, personal stories, sweet moments, mundande but precious interactions, struggles and inner turmoil makes it seem very real to me hahaaaa... I feel really fuzzy and warm all the way through the story its really satisfying to have found this one (i was looking for a different series but this one popped out instead!) Anyways for those who come across this work I recommend you to... more>> read it! its worth the time.

P.S although you may get a overdosage of saccahrin∩˙▿˙∩ <<less

Fluff, fulfilment, wholesomeness, all you need. Clever protagonist, no drama, no dense behaviors, everything is simple, straightforward. She knows, He knows, they only waiting for good moment.

Geez, that was true antidote for dense romcoms full of misunderstandings.

Really enjoyable and cute love story. Short and sweet, without too much or rather any drama. I struggle to find gems such a this and it’s been a while since the last, so I’m very appreciative of this. Both the MC and FMC were very well fleshed out and I found myself getting emotional, on the verge of tears on several occasions. Only a truly good novel can evoke such emotions from me and I’d like to give this a 5* if only for the main story alone, but the... more>> side stories felt unfinished and a bit lacking. Definitely a must read. <<less

Imma get real to you, the story peaked at ch 50-ish. It's a slog reading at that point onwards. It's a good read, yes. But let's just say I'd put this on last of all the other fluff stuff you can read.

Let's just say I want my vanilla with a dash of citrus or spice and this have none of those.

This novel does romance very well until you reach the after story where the author just dissolves into generic fluff romance. However, I will rate it five stars for the main story, which was quite emotional and executed well.

damn bro it should be illegal to make such a diabetes-inducing novel!

Very corny and sentimental but in a good way. In my opinion, it's a fluffy novel in which the characters' inner monologues – the slow unraveling of their past and their motivations – are the main driving force of the plot instead of external conflict like a villain, for example.

Sometimes that sappiness is a bit too on the nose as if the author were trying too hard to pull our heartstrings. Also, most of the story's runtime is spent... more>> solely on the main characters and their flashbacks while leaving some other potentially interesting characters aside, like the little sister and the mom.

Still, it's okay, the use of foreshadowing was pretty good, although obvious, it kept me hooked enough to finish the story, so I guess it's good enough for me.

hard recommend.

and yes, the ending is the sappiest part of the story <<less
