Qi Leren had just cleared the bad ending of «The Nightmare Games» when his laptop died well before its time. His luck seemed to follow him as he was transported, along with the other passengers, to a hospital following an accident between his bus and a truck. Upon waking in a transfusion hall rather than a ward, QiLeren felt a familiar sense of dread as he took in the hospital that held no trace of other people…

This is a series very dear to me. Its romance is tortuously slow but so, so realistic as the author spins a tale of two people whose love for each other perseveres through the trials of hardships and time. People who are in this purely to see some gay action are advised to turn away now because this is not the novel for that, mainly because they don't even get together until the second volume. If you choose to take the ride, however, you might find yourself loving every second... more>> of this turbulent journey that the characters embark on, because they actually have a life to live outside of pining for their love interest. It's a story of adventure. It's a story of people. It's a story of ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances.

It's a story of romance, interwoven into the events that shape its world and by god is it deliciously satisfying to experience.

Despite the five star review, this series is by no means perfect - nothing ever is. It is, however, charming nonetheless and deserves every star I can ever bestow upon it. You might think I'm biased because I'm the translator, but no sane person would take on a 300 chapter unfinished series if they didn't love it from the bottom of their heart. <<less

As of Chapter 35, I'm pretty invested. Honestly, I love stories that focus on character and plot before romance, and when talking about shounen ai or yaoi, you may as well forget about it. The MC is a great character, neither overpowered, smart, lucky, or pure. He's the perfect amalgamation to feel like he might be a real person. As for the ML...I'm still not sure who that is, actually.

Spoiler

The obvious choice was the guy from Aurora who helped him through the trial village, but he's kind of shady, and now that there's the MC's 'Goddess', who is so clearly a man who was forced into a female body just like the MC was for a certain quest (long story, you should just read it), I'm not so sure. The quiet cold beauty type who's actually secretly shy vs a guy who is frankly Shady McShadester, who would be a better male lead? Really, though, I could be wrong entirely and it's neither of them. Doesn't really matter, as the romance is secondary.

[collapse]

I also like how even female characters are allowed to be characters who are tough, have flaws and good points, and can sometimes even save the day, when they're usually written off as cannon fodder and cheap villainesses in stories like this.

Basically, this is a compelling story with good characterization first, and a shounen ai second. <<less

I just finished the first book. I haven't finished this novel yet, but I am here to curse the author.

gOD DAMNIT I CAN'T STOP CRYING!! IT'S 1 AM IN THE MORNING AND I CAN'T STOP BAWLING MY EYES OUT. CURSE YOU, BMBL FOR PLAYING WITH MY EMOTIONS. WHY ARE YOU MAKING MY PRECIOUS MC AND ML SUFFER SO MUCH?? I HAVEN'T CRIED THIS MUCH SINCE MDZS!!

I'm sorry, but I just have so many emotions right now.

The relationship dynamics between MC and ML remands me of Wei Ying & Lan Zhan.... more>> I highly recommend this novel to anyone who likes MDZS or danmei with horror elements. Or anyone with a slight masochistic tendency :')

Hell, you don't even need to like BL to enjoy this novel. Just a warning - if you are here for that sweet romance, you should know that this is a slow-burn, so even if MC & ML had a instant connection, they are not going to get together until the 2nd book. BUT believe me, the pain and angst are worth it. <<less

This is hands down one of the best stories I've ever read. The plot is great, the characters are likable and the romance is AMAZING!!!! I've finished the two volumes in a span of 4 days AND I still want to read more! The story is so great that whenever I read other stories, I can't help but be disappointed by how it can't compare to it. Now, I'm desperate to read the last volume.

If you're a person who loves horror and danmei/bl then you should ABSOLUTELY read it!

The second arc is when you decide if you wanna drop this or push through and see.

The first arc was pretty good, albeit a bit long-winded. Then came the second arc, where the established character of the MC gets blown to pieces and he becomes an annoying fangirl (yes, fanGIRL). The author's note reads, 'I just want to write about a beautiful girl fighting monsters and levelling up while her fangirl follows her around (lmao), let me get my fill of excitement in this instance, alright?' Uhh, sure, but only... more>> if it doesn't destroy whatever you have written in arc 1? In the first and introductory arc, the author wrote the MC as someone who's level-headed, he might be a bit naive and new, but his actions are reasonable and even when there's a very pretty guy nearby he's still alert--that's what made me like him and sold me to this story. Then I kept reading, and he meets a beautiful girl and his iq becomes -100. It's literally a very hard survival mode instance filled with veterans but he keeps being all 'how can I talk to the goddess? I need to strike a conversation. Omg she's so pretty' and keeps being distracted when he's the only noob and can die any minute. And yes, while he's being all h**ny said goddess comes to save him probably four or five times, he's totally being carried.

I mean, I don't really mind if he gets weak considering he's thrust into a place full of experienced players when he's fresh out of a tutorial village, but it's his happy-go-lucky in love attitude that makes it very painful to read. It got so frustrating I came here to read the reviews again and sure enough, some have mentioned the atrocious second arc. I really hate it when authors do a complete 180 on what they've established like this, it's very jarring and disappointing. And it had so much potential to be a 5-star too, what a shame. <<less

Honestly, I really wanted to like this novel, but it was really just all over the place especially after the second arc. The first arc really hooked me in, and I really liked the MC because of how unique his personality was compared to other novels. He's not incredibly op or super smart; he's just your normal average dude who got accidentally pulled into this weird video game type world. I also really liked his skill card because it had added some good angst to the novel every time he... more>> used it. But, he ends up relying so heavily on the card; he literally just sacrifices himself as part of his fight style and it's kind of getting old. It was also hard not to cringe during that second arc where he was basically drooling over the ML. Then after that arc, everything became super confusing. Because the MC then ends up being caught up in some sort of demon thing and has to train for who knows how long and then has to act and really, it was just too much. They didn't even show the training, it just skipped over and was like, the MC can only do this because he received training. What type of training was it and how did you train?!! And just how much time passed before your character had to be this other character?!! I want to know!! I guess I was just expecting the focus to be more on the system and the "games" he has to play to get more days and didn't expect the story to be more focused on the world they're in. I didn't expect the world they were in to be so rpg like too. I kept on reading until literally almost the end of the book, because I really wanted to see what all the good reviews were about, but ultimately dropped it because I couldn't handle how sudden the transitions were. Ahem, the training time. I did also have a somewhat hard time following the translations after the translator changed, but it didn't affect the story too much.

Overall, if you've just finished global Examination or The earth is online and are looking for something similar, this isn't it. <<less

Just a quick warning for anyone who's thinking about starting this novel: You'll also encounter religious h*mophobia in this novel.

The worldbuilding is great and interesting. The MC is okay for the most part; He kept on losing brain cells over a pretty face though in one arc and that was pretty painful to read through.

Edit: Finally pushed myself to read the rest of the novel, and I'm still interested in the overall plot. The final arc was pretty good. I'm just not particularly attached to the MC though and his... more>> relationship with ML. Or MC's doctor friend either... <<less

Okay, this one really makes my heart race-- not because of the romance (yet) but because of the heart-racing, hair-rising and thrilling events of escaping ghosts and other events soon hahaha. Anyway, set on a modern era, our protagonist is actually just quite a normal lad (or is he?) who occasionally plays horror games and BOOM here comes the Nightmare Game.. (Read the rest of the chapters by Taida Translations xD) seriously, this is BL so yeah ^^ Happy reading!~

I actually really enjoyed reading this novel. It was a bit long so I didn’t get to finish it yet, but I definently like how it’s going so far.

The horror aspect is quite prominent in the story, which is to be expected, but horror isn’t the only thing that makes this novel interesting. The author has considerably detailed world-building that adds to the mystery and suspense in the novel.

The romance is actually a bit of a slow burn. They only get together at the end of the first novel/beginning of... more>> the second novel (I think), but there are quite a few cavity-inducing moments on the way.

MC may seem normal at first, but he has a stronger willpower than most people (protagonist syndrome?), and has some hidden skills that are revealed later on in the story. ML is more shy, but comes off as cold. In reality he’s sOfT (uwu). He’s a person that can be considered strong, and has a developed backstory. Both characters go through considerable development through out the series, and even though their personalities are different they have a strangely harmonious relationship.

I’d recommend the novel if you’re looking for horror or thriller. If you’re looking for the romance, I’d still recommend it, but be ready to burn away your time.

//on a side note, this novel is really scary. Just because I like horror doesn’t mean I’m not scared QAQ

Spoiler

MC shou (?I think) - Qi Leren, ML gong - Ning Zhou. 1v1

hmmm... it was good, I wontnsit here and say that this wasn’t extremely intriguing and even the confusion over who the ML was made me want to continue reading... however, after sigma stopped translating, the translations got increasingly more and more confusing.

I’m a visual person, but with the latest translations, I don’t understand what’s going on at all. it’s extremely skittish and jumpy and one minute he was in a tree and the next he wasn’t or he was but something happened that’s confused me further. I’m mot... more>> sure. maybe it’s me. maybe I’m just picky or spoiled whatever I don’t know, but it’s hard for me to read certain translations styles and this is one of them.

it’s unfortunate, but I know that if I tried to force myself to continue reading knowing that this translations style doesn’t suit me I’d end up hating this book and I don’t want to do that because it was definitely interesting and maybe one day I’d like to pick it up again.

don’t take my word for it tho, because it seems that many people were able to read the later translations and were happy with it, so it would be best to see for yourself. anyway, I’ll bookmark it in hopes for more later. <<less

When coming into this book, I didn't have many expectations. Something light, funny, maybe a bit of angst, eh just a read to pass the time. I've read a lot of books and been around for a while, so I always keep my expectations a bit low.

This book... No, this series blew those out of the water. It surpassed all I thought it would be.

This is a slow burn novel. I feel like it doesn't really hit its stride until around the second book when we get to know everyone... more>> and can connect to them.

I think the author said, in the notes actually, that she first started writing without a plan and just based on inspiration so that could be why lol.

It's light hearted and slow at the start. It stays very humorous throughout, and as you continue through the book, the plot starts to deepen.

When the book really started getting good, I couldn't stop laughing and... also crying my heart out.

I want to say, I'm really not someone who cries a lot. Like I said, I've just read a lot, for most of the books, I'll cry for a page or 2 and then done.

This book made me cry for chapters. And it's not just a sorrowful pain. In fact, it's a pain filled with love. Most of the sad events have to do with love and strength: people who are loved, have loved, and are willing to give it their all.

It makes me bawl like a baby because I am both absolutely heartbroken and absolutely in love with these people. I'm actually tearing up just writing this.

Spoiler

HUGE SPOILER:
I just lost it when the author wrote about the goddess of fortune weeping for Lu, for a timid hero, one moment is enough... (Bursts into tears)

And Anna, her letter. I want to cry so much just thinking about her.

[collapse]

In a genre where the main character is frequently the only one illuminated, this is a world with many people. Some of which we don't even meet until they are already gone. They have stories, backgrounds, hopes and dreams. They feel real and vivid, that's a very beautiful thing.

Although the main focus is on the love story of our 2 main characters (my babies!).

I think I should also say this is not a sad series. The most apt description is that it's like a box of chocolates, bittersweet.

It's so funny when it wants to be funny. It's warm when it wants to be warm. It's sad when it wants to be sad. In other words, the author has a leash on my emotions and also should reimburse me for my tissues.

Even the villains are well written, they are more than just bringers of doom and despair. I've laughed at their antics, and pitied them.

No story is perfect and this one isn't either. The beginning is a bit slow, and it can feel laggy and confusing at times. However, to me the good outweighs the bad. It's a story of love and hope to me, and I wholeheartedly adore it.

A FINAL SPOILER
Spoiler

Ok, maybe I wouldn't be so calm and full of peace if I didn't know this was not a tragedy. I read in the notes, the author promised the last part of the novel would be a HE. Woohooo! canceling plans to isekai and save my precious characters

Do you read the genre? Is it your liking? Then you will love this story. Great plot, great world building, great pacing, great characters.

I adore the MC, he's just an ordinary guy, who have average luck, normal body, normal IQ, not an OP at all. But he's not a coward and strive to make himself better, and I love that about him.

And ML, how I want to hug him. He's such a cold beauty with warm heart.

I'm so interested to read the next book.

Urgh, the game-plot is good but I don't like MC's character...

MC is.... a very normal guy with lower than average luck, average desk-worker strength and stamina (which is not too great), pretty good courage, kinda-okay IQ but not too smart

*) at the very least - at first game - he rely on the 2 other guys brain and doesn't contribute any meaningful information/clue

Then at 2nd game he did something that I consider "very s*upid"

Spoiler

He know the other player is a veteran and very good at killing - an information broker specifically told him to not have plan against the killer player - but because the killer looks great, he asked "beauty whats your name?" - then after being throughly ignored - which should've been a glaring sign of "dont talk to me" - he dare asks again - which is, bro, really, it's a deadly game and you're trying to hit on a killer?

[collapse]

I cant rate this fairly since liking personality is, well, personal preference, but plot-wise this story is good and definitely recommended (if you dont mind/like MC's "average-guy in dire want of a GF" personality) (yes GF, MC is "straight" - for now at least) <<less

I do recommend this novel! The mysteries and puzzles are enough to keep u going. It is focused on story itself and each arc is interrelated. No H scenes between ML and MC; u could even say that it is a slow burn romance yet it's not boring. Also, The love between MC and ML can be considered a sin during the setting,.. Won't spoil what will happen so just read it ?.

It should have a tragedy tag!! ?? You would really feel the calm before the storm tragedy on... more>> book 2 last arc ??

Spoiler

I even mistook the villain as an ML in the story and voted for him for MC ?? Silly me.. Only found out.. At the end of book 1.

Welp. I finally made a NU account just to review this. It’s probably my favorite danmei which makes me sad not a lot of folks have read it. It creates such an interesting story with twists and mysteries. Each arc is interesting.

The love interest and the interesting story is probably what draws me to this the most (and my love of all things horror).

nothing really stands out here. it's a very very average read.

like it's too much of an average of a novel to have that much hype and 4.4 rating, not surprised at the general taste tho. I'm not sure what butchered my experience. I'm not gonna go around blaming the translation though I do have to say I preferred sigma's over quazar's obviously. the first arc was decent and exciting and with sigma's translation, u definitely want to keep reading. their translation style flows well and reads very nicely and it's... more>> just the beginning of the novel, so u want to actually read.

the second arc is a major make and break point, it's either u get over the incredible 180 degree cringe turn in our protagonist's personality (which goes away in third arc so yeah? lmao?) and make through it to the next arc or u drop it. I'm one of those who did the former and read to the end and I don't really regret my reading experience tbh but I sure am a lil bit disappointed because I am a victim of those hyped reviews.

the protagonist is pretty nice like he's just some guy who accidently got into the Nightmare World. he's not op, he's just some guy who is decent at logical reasoning and has a good amount of bad luck. too bad the author doesn't seem to care about the characters that much, it's like they are just there and do not have any volume? the names are dropped, they play their part and they are discarded (in the most loose sense) I don't think I care about a single person in this novel, no one has any chemistry with anyone. even tho conceptually I love their ideas. I don't know why certain characters exist and even if they do exist for future plot purpose in the subsequent sequel....i mean it's fine but at least the protagonist should have some emotional worth for the reader but um. null here, baby?

ah like yk what it was pretty fine during arc 1 and then arc 2 happens and if that amount of simping over a goddess doesn't make u cringe, the world-building should. the ideas, the plot, the instances, the writing -- it'snice. it's pretty nice, it makes u want to read and continue till the end until u are like, hold on? is that it about the world? like the instance dulls the world itself, u barely get to hold hand with the world. now I know it's unlimited flow but like it's a video game world technically. why is that element so underutilized. the juggle between delving into the world as a real demonic world vs it being a video game world is soo not done well. the heart is there, the execution isn't. so consider me a lil disappointed bc I loveee a good isekai novel. there is barely any vividity to the world and I don't appreciate that. it's a missed opportunity bc I find the heart of the novel interesting and it's a tetralogy so I might come back to it one day.

tho id say the writing does make u cringe a lot? the second arc was really hard to get through and it sort of gets worse as u go further and theres a good amount of casual transmisogyny and (religious here) h*mophobia -- which I am always prepared for bc it's an asian novel but man here the writing makes it a headache to read through im ngl. I usually drop these kind of novels with that kind of writing (the amount of times it features the phrase 'but I am straight' or 'bending a straight man sexuality' or 'a gay dude wearing make up = pe*vert' is a lot. and it's tiring to read that) but the instances here are really good and I love a good brain storming over why/how over quests. so yeah, okay-ish read but oh man, the disappointment is real bc it features some concepts I really like ;-; <<less

This is truly a hidden gem!!! It took me so long to find it and I really loved it. From the plot, tot he character growth of MC and the beautiful chemistry between the leads, how the author meticulously described the emotions and expressions of MC at every point of situation. Here I am crying right before I gym because I chose to read the final arc early in the morning

For my empaths who enjoy angst but a reasonable amount, this is your book. I'll be real- I was iffy about continuing after 30 chapters because the beginning felt really weak. There wasn't any hook that made me want to continue reading, the characters didn't stand out all that much, & it just felt like another unlimited horror.

Then arc 2 started & slapped my face not once but twice. THIS... more>> sh*t IS GOOD OK. I regret all my former thoughts of calling it mediocre because not only is worldbuilding teeming with potential but the main CP has a slowburn that's sure to boil you alive. There's a lot of foreshadowing, some missed details, but I hear Book 2 is gonna save my life.

My further 2-cents:

Spoiler

Just a few things out of my chest that I must vomit out. One, MC is very human. Thought he was super beta in the beginning & his only unique feature was his S/L skill. But he has such a killer mentality & a stronger will than I initially assumed. An S/L skill may keep you from dying permanently, but to be able to keep your sanity after dying so many times requires a certain mentality. The skill doesn't freeze up any nerve receptors, so the pain of dying is 100% experienced. It's an absolute nightmare when you think of it in that perspective. Props to you my dude.

Two, I'm super excited about the worldbuilding. I actually like the fact that it's much more than just completing missions to extend your lifespan. The tasks you complete also correlate with this new world; your actions affect the inhabitants of this land; they're not NPCs but actual people with emotions. So I enjoyed seeing that depth & weight in the nightmare missions. I'm curious to see how much further it will be fleshed out. It's three books, so there's a lot of room for expansion.
