Kim Dokja does not consider himself the protagonist of his own life. Befitting the name his parents gave him, he is a solitary person whose sole hobby is reading web novels. For over a decade, he has lived vicariously through Yu Junghyeok, the main character of the web novel Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse (TWSA).

Through Junghyeok, Dokja has experienced secondhand the trials of repeatedly regressing in time, in search of an end to life-threatening “scenarios” that force people to act out narratives for the amus**ent of god-like “Constellations.”

After reading 3,149 chapters—long after all other readers lost interest—Dokja finally resigns himself to the story ending. However, he receives an enigmatic message from the author, stating that the story will soon be monetized, before his surroundings suddenly go dark.

He swiftly realizes that fiction has become reality and he is now living through TWSA. Although he is the singular omniscient reader of the events yet to come, his success in the scenarios is not guaranteed—but perhaps his advantage will empower him to step into the protagonist role that never suited him before.

I really like the way that the author, although some scenarios were written vaguely, made me interpret it. It's like having a literary lesson, but in an engaging manner. Some parts of the story made me laugh, some made me cry, and some made me want to slap Kim Dokja 1863 times.

I love how the story made me more open-minded with regards to how different religions, as well as ideas, are presented and used in every scenario.

This story has excellent world building, though some parts may feel a bit... more>> sluggish due to how extensive the fight scenes are/the overall mood of the scenario might be too overwhelming to read.

Overall, it was a fantastic story for me, and it truly left an impression on me. 10/10, will read it a thousand times more if I have to <<less

One of the greatest novels I have ever read. Everything from start to finish always had hints of the mysteries which start to slowly unfold throughout the story. Deserves a second read to read it from a different perspective to understand the genius behind it.

While all the negative reviews are understandable, it is important to note that the majority of these reviews come from readers who have read roughly ~100 chapters. But if you manage to get past those chapters, you'll start noticing that this story is really not what you think it is. Honestly, I don't understand how the author managed to connect everything in the end.

This story is for just that one reader. This story is your story, dear reader; believe me when I say so. You will want to see the... more>> end of this story, but you will also not want it to end at the same time. When I reached the end of the story, I was so angry. But I was also laughing at the same time. Because this story is such a masterpiece!

It's definitely worth a try. If you're debating whether or not to read it, just dive into it! <<less

Out of all the novels I've read over the years (around 340~ novels in the past 4 years), ORV is the second novel that I've ever rated more than 4, the first being Oregairu, but that's beside the point.

ORV, In an essence, a story of an author, a reader and a character set in apocalyptic world. That's it. That's the whole premise of this novel, and it is f*cking good.

I could give you a long winded tangent on how great Kim Dokja is as a character, I can spout useless... more>> information regarding world building, plot, dialogue, whatever other sh*t that make this an excellent novel, however, this line from the TWSA sums it up best.

"There Are Three ways to Survive in this Apocalyptic World
I May have Forgotten a few, However, One Thing is for Certain
And that is, the You Who's Reading These Words Will get to Survive.
This story is for just that one reader." <<less

I started reading the manhwa months ago, and I was like, "Mmm, it was okay." And then, there's this chapter that I am really eager to know what happened next so I proceed to read the novel. That was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my whole life. I love this story so much. ORV is hands down one the best (Well, for me. But if I'll speak honestly, there are lots of stories better than ORV.) ORV's a novel that will enter your heart, build a... more>> home in it, and will stay until it became a permanent part of you. <<less

I think this novel is the one for patient reader. It is the same as an onion, the more we read, the more we notice its other layers inside. I love it.

Still it isn't a spotless novel. Some part I found it kinda nonsense at the first read, but later found it quite memorable at the second, the third, and maybe I'll find it different in my fourth and fifth time rereading in the future.

And it required (a lot of) patience. Something seems weird or odd or maybe made you... more>> feel like this novel is crap in the beginning will show you their reason and answer in those very last chapters. It DOES make sense if you patient enough to read until the end.

Please, please don't use too harsh words if you haven't finish/or dropped this one novel.

Spoiler

I hate Kim Dokja. I hate that Ugly Squid of Salvation.

And I love him.

And I hate him.

I started reading this just a few days ago and binge read through all 500+ chapters until today. I've just finished it and feel as if I've just come off of a long roller coaster ride.

The novel started out quite normally, I guess, the first few chapters are well written but as long as you've read through enough novels, then they're quite normal. However, that's only the start of the roller coaster, what I didn't realize was that it was simply the beginning. It's just the part where you strap... more>> in to the ride, you position yourself comfortably, take a glance around at your surroundings, and then lay back.

Then things start ramping up, the ride slowly begins to move, and picks up speed, until at a certain point, it's moving insanely fast, things are showing up left and right, you finally see what the foreshadowing has been building up to, characters undergo trial after trial, the ride goes up and down.

The end is in sight, but every time it looks clear, there's another dip in the ride, challenges pop up continuously. Twists and turns, and finally, the ending. There are answers to everything, and it's all neatly arranged. Prepare extra brain cells here, because this is where everything gets very deep.

It wrapped up into an ending I didn't even consider, it was incredibly satisfying and realistic though, and left me with a wonderful feeling. The more I think about this novel, the more aspects of it that I realize are incredible.

Spoiler

For those who have read the novel, I feel like I can truly understand the feelings of the constellations. This is one of the most delicious stories I've ever enjoyed.

[collapse]

There are characters that I initially hated, that I came to understand and love. It's a weird feeling but I feel that it's not just the characters who grow, me the reader is also growing along with them.

Long story short, this novel is a serious masterpiece that will make you marvel at it in awe. I can't imagine how the writers of this story managed to accomplish it. It's unbelievably touching and magnificent.

I should also clear up, that while there is a tragedy tag, I don't think it's a tragedy? Um... The ending is a little open but I think it's a happy ending.

Spoilers:

Spoiler

I definitely think that he opened his eyes, and spent the rest of his days with his companions. They live in a big house together, and live as a big wholesome family, never to be separated again. There are a countless number of happy stories that come after, that we'll never see but exist nonetheless. The most important thing is that they're all alive, together, and happy.

I refuse to accept any other ending as canon!!!

After everything that I would say in this review, I would like to emphasize that this story doesn't suck, it's just a not perfect story.

Some parts are too repetitive and that made it stale once you read up to the middle parts. I was hooked at first, but I've gone numb with all the redundancies that happened to the MC since c200. (edit: by the later parts, it's going to be good again.)

The other characters only look like a collection of displays that the MC couldn't bear to... more>> even get a scratch on. I wished the story could also tell more of the other characters. Let the readers see more of their side and development. Back stories are too scarce that others' were only mentioned in the passing.

Yoo Joonghyuk's side was only tread upon in details past chapter 400, but before that, Yoo Joonghyuk's story was just about Kim Dokja's story too. YJH's story was just a tool to make the MC develop more, and not about YJH himself.

The author mainly centralized on the MC and at one point, ran out of fresh ideas to progress the story further, so only deliberately recycled the past scenes to a new one by just adding different circumstances. Anyway, it's still the same nonetheless.

Spoiler

MC dying for the others, coming back alive, then sacrificing again, and so on and so forth. Well, he truly lives up to his modifier Demon King of Salvation.

[collapse]

Once is exciting, twice is enough, thrice? Uh... can we talk about some other things?

Edit: So I finished it, and I actually didn't regret persevering to pass through the boring parts on the middle. By the later parts, the story finally focused on the other characters, so I'm satisfied. The loopholes were patched up on the last parts that everything that didn't make sense before finally had a sense. Although some parts of the ending was still predictable, the thrill finally returned just like from how it was back on the first chapters.

I won't change the rating since the middle was really boring that I was tempted to drop it then. And the writing are somewhat vague on the other parts that I couldn't picture it properly, particularly the actions scenes, etc.

This was one of the few things that was described so vaguely:

A tall man, a young man with blonde hair, a girl with a ponytail, and finally...

Couldn't the author at least add few more words to describe the characters vividly?

And also, I still feel like the other parts were forced.

Spoiler

Like the time when the great war between good and evil happened. The others who stood on the neutral side weren't allowed to participate in the scenario, but how come their nebula was allowed even if they didn't want to choose a side?

[collapse]

It was really a roller-coaster ride. I had fun, went tearful, got bored to near death, and was finally sent off fairly satisfied. <<less

If I could I would give this not 5 stars, but 10. Or one hundert. This novel is a masterpiece. The characters are fleshed out and the scenarios are interesting and full of action. I read it somewhere in the Internet and I think the translators put a lot of work into it. But what I loved the most was the world building. I actually do not enjoy game-like scenarios and very complicated world building, but this was spread over a lot of chapters with a few discrete but logical... more>> hints. I was amazed. It really felt like a puzzle was pieced together and the satisfaction that came from the last piece was immense.

Spoiler

And as a bromance-fan I absolutely loved Uriel and YJH and KDJs' dynamic. And yeah, I was sometimes sad when the two of them got less time together because of being separated. I was sooo touched when YJH went so far to save KDJ in the epilogue (he is a real softie, isn't he? ≫.< And am I the only one who actually wanted to read more about what happened after KDJ woke up? I wish, this novel wouldn't end! Time to go back to TCF, my other favorite. T-T

This is my first time writing a review for something, mainly because I find it tiring.
I really couldn't help it, 'cause about half the reviews are criticizing a novel of 551 chapters after reading few chapters, at most half of it. But this story is more amazing moving forward. (And more sad).

The plot is riveting and every arc keeps me at the edge of my seat that I couldn't stop reading unless I forced myself to. Kim Dokja, the MC, is three-dimensional and has a tragic, yet relatable backstory:

Spoiler

Abusive father, mother who wanted to protect him but seen as neglectful to KDJ instead; the bullying from school and the harassment he got from reporters after his mother killed his father, then publishing a book about it that lead to more harassment. His su*cide attempt when he was 15.

These are all made him come off as being distant to his companions at first, however, as the story progressed they became his newfound family and he would do anything to protect them. Even at the cost of his life.

[collapse]

However, one of the selling points of this novel is the relationships between the characters. Their unwavering loyalty to each other is admirable.

Spoiler

Much like KDJ who's willing to sacrifice himself for his companions, they also do everything they could to save him. No matter how much time it took. It's especially touching when Yoo Joonghyuk himself took the initiative to bring KDJ back, hopping from one timeline to another for years to spread TWS, so KDJ could remember.

Alright, this is my first time writing a review since I'm too shy to do it usually but I think it is time already for me to come out of my shell.

I've finished ORV a year and a half ago, some might not be able to stomach so many chapters and arcs but I personally loved it. It took me around half a year to finish it completely but not because I thought it was boring, I actually enjoyed it too much and felt too much empathy for Kim Dokja... more>> that I had to overcome my fear of finishing it. I was scared of it ending so I delayed it a lot, as expected it bring me to tears many times along the story. It made me feel a lot of emotions in a way many other novels couldn't. I would have keep reading even if there were 10k chapters. That's how much I liked it.

There may be some times where it feels a little bit slow and dense but it was fine after. You just need to have patience and I really suggest to give it a try. All the characters have some deepness and I really enjoyed that, they were not just random words on paper, they were characters for who I would pray every chapter, I would frown at their presence, I would smile when they smile, I would cry when they feel bad.

Before reading ORV I didn't even like these type of novels, but i've learnt to be more tolerant and give chances to novels with many bad reviews that ended up being better than expected.

Kim Dokja touched my heart, as a reader and as a person. <<less

Wow. Just wow. Don't listen to the pessimistic reviews; this is an amazing novel. Simply searching it online will tell you that; you'll be flooded with this novel's fanart. It is also exceedingly popular in Korea. Oh, um... there's no BL... lololol. I have not completed it, but let's face it already. The JonghyukXDokja ship will only sail in our dreams (and also Uriel's. XD). TXT. My lips are sealed; you never who's watching or listening.

This story will get you hooked effortlessly and, if it doesn't, it's only a matter... more>> of time. There are a hell lot of twists and turns (your IQ will be tested), and the protagonist is kind of a genius (scratch that, he is a genius. He avoids calamities that appear impossible to thwart as though its nothing). The plot is very much unique; it's not something you find easily. Highly recommended. <<less

Overall, looking back, I really did enjoy ORV. You can tell how well the author planned everything out from the beginning, hints given from the start revealing themselves in the end. Each of the story significant parts play their roles extremely well, and everything is connected in the end. Things considered plot holes earlier on were explained - how well is another question. If you get pretty far in, maybe around c300, I really do recommend reading until the epilogue; it feels somewhat conclusive and ties up everything from pre-epilogue.

All... more>> the characters were well written and enjoyable to read about - I can't think of anyone that I sincerely hated every appearance of, which is rare. Every main-side character has their development, though I do feel a bit iffy about the ones introduced later on, and the lack of incorporation they had except as plot devices. I liked all the main trio, especially the MC, Kim Dokja. The world-building was great, too.

While reading though, there were certainly parts more enjoyable than others. The short c291-299 arc really was one of the best, but getting through c300-400 was... tiring. The fights are, as others have said, sometimes repetitive; it can have very little actual action and just the same, repetitive stuff. If I have to read one more line about telling stories I think I'll go insane though I plan to eventually reread.

The worst part about ORV is, I'd say, the insane deus ex machina. The lack of any sort of threat or risk; if someone dies, they'll be revived.
Spoiler

This was especially pertinent with the reincarnation of Yoo Sangah. At that point, the scenarios themselves lost all meaning.

[collapse]
KDJ sacrifices himself? No, he doesn't. I don't particularly mind the self-sacrifice - it's not ridiculous, nor especially naive, like a shounen, but it relaxes the meaning of said action and feels like an asspull. Again, unlike most people, I don't think it's as bad as it's considered. It's just repetitive. At the start, especially, everything that happens is planned, and while it seems cool at first, it reiterates the lack of risk. Well, it gets better.

Continuing from that, yes, the deus ex machinas are explained in the end, but said explanation feels inadequate. You still have to get through what, 500 chapters of plot armour before you get the explanation?

So now, , , my gripes with the epilogue.
Spoiler

I like the Oldest Dream stuff, and the linking together of KDJ, HSY and YJH. Everything falls into place, small hints are explained and tied together. But it's just so, , , badly explained. From where did this specific loop originate? Is the loop infinite and unchangeable? I feel like the ending should involve the breaking of the loop, instead of the continuing of the cycle for dubious reasons (why would they do what they did?). The open ending didn't really feel that great to read - I would've preferred something more conclusive, tying up the loose ends literally created in the very same epilogue.

What I hated the most though, was how the epilogue rendered the rest of the book more... meaningless? It emphasises futility and... I don't know, after following KDJ's journey to create his own ending for all those chapters, for it all to end up as an endless, unbreakable cycle...

I'm not sure why anyone reading reviews would want to see me complain about the epilogue. Still, I did like the epilogue, with all its flaws. The way it tied everything together does balance out all my gripes.

[collapse]

Despite the complaints here, I did love ORV. The world-building, the completeness of the story, and the characters (especially the main trio!) really were great. The entire webnovel was enjoyable to read. Would I recommend it? Well, I loved ORV, but it depends on whether you can get through the repetitive parts, until everything unravels itself. <<less

If you're looking for a review that goes deep into why ORV is a good novel then this isn't the review for you. I read this story not paying attention to any themes or deep ideas. I read this for easy entertainment.

this is the kind of novel that makes you cry, laugh, somewhat hate the main character because of their habits of self-sacrificing, and pull all-nighters just to finish.

KDJ is a hilarious protag mixed with smart yet emotionally dumb when it comes to people and he never fails to piss... more>> people off.

YJH is a more silent but has a lot of action protag. He's caring for his teammates and clearly has a difficult time moving on from the past but with the help of friends and his sister, he gradually moves forward with them. His actions and behavior are easily explained with his 1863 regressions (even the first three are pretty damn traumatizing based off of what KDJ remembers).

HSY is the one who connects YJH and KDJ. She's the smartest and most sensible. Her pessimistic view clashes with YSA's optimistic view but they manage to work together. She's the voice of reason whenever KDJ or YJH are going to do some lowkey self sacrificing stuff.

With KDJ and YJH always running off doing their own thing, HSY is left to lead the group. Though she gives off the lone wolf vibe, she's willing to cooperate with people who share the same goal (s) with her.

And my favorite part is how this story mixes in mythologies and stories without the reader being left confused. They have greek mythology, hindu mythology, Wizard of Oz, cultivation, etc. These new settings or stories are presented in an easy to digest way that even if I skim some paragraphs I can have a rough idea of what's happening.

Spoiler

My favorite part is when Persephone and Hades basically adopted KDJ. It felt so natural and earned after learning how bad KDJ's childhood was and how KDJ's mother failed at parenting.

Another thing is KDJ's tendancy to throw away his life to ensure his Nebula survives for the next scenario. It's frustrating because the characters are experiencing the trauma of losing a loved one so many times they practically have to put a leash on him just to make sure he doesn't do it again.

There are also some family fluff like when they took a company break. KDJ is given a scenario where he has to fulfill everyone's wish and it's just fun.

The children still act like children despite the apocolypse.

Anna Croft gets some character development that yoy don't really notice until she saves YJH.

[collapse]

Edit: was skimming through some reviews and I'm starting to doubt that those who finished or almost finished the novel and giving it 1 star reviews are reading the same novel as the rest of us? I get it if someone who only read up to 100 chapters gives a low rating since the story starts into the real meat of the plot afterwards. But completed and still asking
Spoiler

what made KDJ make YJH regress 1864 times? How YJH was born if he didn't have parents??did you not read the epilogue?

[collapse]
I 100% understand that not everyone will like the same things I like. But what I don't understand is when someone "completes" a novel but a) asks questions that were answered in the novel and b) gives the novel a low rating since the question "wasn't answered".

ORV is not a novel that's going to spoon feed the readers answers to the questions that they create in their story. The largest theme in ORV is interpretation, especially with KDJ being an unreliable narrator. It's only when you read the epilogue does the story truly "ends". <<less
