In his previous life, Yun Qingci loved the Emperor more than life and death. When he was alive, he made soup and clothes for him, and in politics, he helped monitor his officials, even his family.

He was solely dedicated to the emperor, and all his scheming strategies were used to gain favour. He never borrowed his power as the Lord Empress to seek employment for his relatives, and he did not show favoritism. He can be said to be strictly impartial and incorruptible, not even recognizing his own family.

Outsiders were terrified of him, and relatives hated him, but Yun Qingci didn’t care. However, in the end, he was thrown into the cold palace by the only person he cared about and his whole family imprisoned.

Finally, he committed su*cide on that snowy day, and fell down that gilded tower.

Reincarnated, Yun Qingci retracted his claws, picked up the glass pieces of his heart, and conducted himself evasively in society. Acting as an escort to the Emperor for his relatives, he decided to become a proud Lord Empress that doesn’t need to be treasured or can have his status shaken.

Unexpectedly, the emperor who abandoned him like a shoe, praised by countless courtiers for both his virtue and kindness, suddenly changed his temper. He became cold and harsh, paranoid and cruel.

The servants who confronted Yun Qingci? He would beat them. The imperial concubines that provoked Yun Qingci? He’d punish them. A small person who framed Yun Qingci? He would kill him. When someone tries to approach Yun Qingci, he would become jealous to the extreme.

Soon everyone knew that Empress Yun was the emperor’s inverse scale. He was not allowed to be hurt, touched, or even looked at.

Yun Qingci, the fairy man, is speechless: So you like me not loving you, why didn’t you say that sooner?

A bitter sweet revenge against the scum top at the beginning. But the lingering feelings made it difficult

You will get bitter sweet feelings served and ut was really good. I quited liked the plot twist and this distinguished it from other books in this genre.

They’re both crazy. They have the most toxic relationships and I was wavering every other chapter whether I wanted them to separate or stay together.

if I’m being honest I do think they’re both torturing themselves and each other a little too much for what happened to them but o guess they both believe they’re making the correct decision.

this novel is basically that the MC and the ML having multiple misunderstandings and miscommunications. Honestly I don’t think most of the novel would have occurred if they had actually talked to each... more>> other about their insecurities and troubles in their first life.

overall I actually quite enjoyed this novel. The translation is excellent and the plot didn’t drag. The characters were well fleshed out with their flaws and strengths. I’f you wanna read some angst, this is a good shout <<less

Genuinely enjoyed this one. I'm glad both characters were fleshed out enough to feel real. They were flawed and both had massive failings that led to the downfall of their relationship. This has the exact balance of punishing both characters without going overboard and their reconciliation was perfectly timed. I usually have a lot of criticism when I'm reading because I feel like some changes might have suited the storyline better but I have no suggestions for this one. It's perfect as is.

This was supposed to be drama, but it barely holds its title because of how s*upid the main couple is. The twist reveals itself at the third part of the novel - and it completely disappointed me. MC is just... O-overbearing. U-unreasonable.I do not want to spoil anything, because the novel has no plot except the relationship issues. But oh boy he feels like the dumbass.

ML is just a fool. Persistent, but still a fool. And I didn't like his personal "health" ending - it wasn't even barely solved. Again,... more>> no spoilers.

Anyway, to be honest, I enjoyed the novel for about 35 chapters or so. So I will recommend it. <<less

I seriously wish this novel had a higher rating because it's one of the best I've ever read and it deserves better. There are some tr*shy novels out there with a 4.5 rating and yet are still much worse than this. This is a really misunderstood novel.

A lot of people have completely missed that the core of this novel is the unreliable narration. (Always check the tags.)

Between the story, the summary of the novel and heck even the title of the novel itself, the author is very ingeniously... more>> playing with the reader's viewpoint and it's quite clear to observant readers that things are more than meets the eye in this story. Firstly, I can understand that other readers may be dissatisfied with how "contradictory and hypocritical" the MC is on the surface. But like I mentioned previously, it is very obviously indicated by the author that the MC is an unreliable narrator, and when it comes to the MC's irrational thoughts and actions, the MC is definitely characterised to have some kind of mental illness. (And so does the ML.)

Readers who went into the novel expecting the MC to be mentally stable and act like a detached saint definitely overlooked the fact that no sane person would commit su*cide just to get their lover's attention. Which is straight up in the summary already. How can any person realistically change to be aloof especially when they're thrust back into the past life that they were tormented by?

Some reviewers have brought up the fact that the MC did not move on from his past, contradictory to the title, which is true. When you read the novel, it is quite obvious that the MC is still very much in love with the ML, which is why he acts the way he does.

But they are missing the point that the title of "The Obsessive Shou Moves On" is simply indicative of the front that the reborn MC puts on - that he is pretending to have moved on although he really hasn't, and I seriously think that is incredibly smart of the author.

A lot of reviewers also say that the MC is an A-hole and is crazy, and while yes that is true, I think you can understand why he is the way he is because not only does he have issues, his behaviour was also greatly manipulated to turn out like this
Spoiler

by the empress dowager. And it's incredibly sad to me that even in his reborn life, although he gains awareness of her manipulations, he still is under some of her control, which only the ML can help him get out of.

[collapse]
I won't divulge too much because that goes into spoiler territory.

And personally I think it makes this novel all the more tragic, because just like how the ML misunderstood and was put off by the MC's behaviour in his past life, so are some of the other reviewers, because they were unable to read between the lines of what was really going on.

Despite the praises I've sung, I can still understand others' critiques of this novel because what the author does with the unreliable narration is unfortunately a double-edged sword. While it is likely for careful readers to catch onto the themes, it is just as likely for other readers to misunderstand and be dissatisfied with the story for not matching with their expectations.

All in all I think that you should at least give this novel a try and go in with the mindset that things are not what they seem, and to keep in mind that the MC and ML are both people who have been driven mad by love. They're both incredibly insane, but that's what makes them so perfect for each other. Because despite all of their heartbreaking conflict, they are still able to come to an understanding with each other and love each other despite their messed up flaws.

Lastly I want to mention this small detail towards the end of the novel.
Spoiler

I love how the author actually considered the mental state of the ML when it came to the development of his eating disorder. This was surprisingly and painfully realistic - incredibly well-written, as someone who also suffers from a mild eating disorder.

All I can really say with this one is that crazy and crazy attract and both of them are actually insane. The misunderstandings were reasonable from the past life, and I cried multiple times with how they both suffered— the groveling in this from ML was next level. Truly I have never read a more tragic story than his??

Spoiler

When MC finally learned of what had happened after his death... and saw the snakes literally devour ML's body until there were just bones... I was sobbing at that point. Come on now how the f*ck is a romance story going to go this hard with the angst.

[collapse]

Anyway I don't know how to rate because the toxicity of their relationship cannot be understated but it was highly enjoyable to read nonetheless. One of those stories where I really didn't know whose side to take.

Spoiler

MC was honestly too crazy in the first life, I have no idea why ML was also so obsessed with him after his death to the point of basically conducting a satanic ritual of eternal pain and suffering just to see MC again LOL I mean I will always appreciate the crazy in fiction.

After reading this book, I realised I prefer reading about an ML who wronged the MC and then learned from his mistakes, rather than the MC meeting a new lover who cherishes them. It's more healing I guess? To see people learning from their mistakes, bettering themselves.

In this book, the mistakes had a massive consequence - the MC's helplessness led to his su*cide. Even though the ML learned his lesson, I don't think they would have been able to be together again if MC didn't find out about all the... more>> ML's sacrifices and pain. The consequences of ML's mistakes, even though they were made with good intentions, were too much for LY to be forgiven just because he learned from his mistakes. At least I know I couldn't feel completely safe, trust the person completely again if I didn't see what LY went through to get them together again.

I really admire YQC's way of loving, but I don't think he's brave or innocent, I think he's very naive. And I like that the author didn't reward his naivety with them simply being happy ever after, because real life is very very rarely such. YQC paid a very steep price for that naivety. Even though the whole mess was miscommunication and misunderstandings, it doesn't erase the pain he felt. Again, only seeing LY's suffering could ease that pain. Only that could have him trust him again and get back together.

I don't think it was wrong for YQC to love LY so fiercely and bravely, but I think it was completely naive to be so completely taken by him and see nothing else, ignore every single person besides LY. For the YQC at that time it was the only way he learned to exist, but it's not a realistic way of living. Let's not talk about how hard it is to find someone who could reciprocate the feeling. Just thinking that we can't live on love alone, we need to take time to go and earn money so we can have food and pay bills is enough to show no-one can spend 24/7 together. You might spend the time off work together. But, even if both spouses work from home, they'd still need to send time ignoring the other and focusing on their work. Maybe I'm constricted by societal norms and I can't see it happening.

I do like YQC. I like it a lot how like is like and hate is hate. But I also feel his world is simply not broad enough. If he himself is happy with it and he happened to have a spouse who could reciprocate, who had no other responsibilities or 'baggage', that would have been perfect. But obviously that is next to impossible. As most people have this emotional baggage.

There's most definitely more I'd like to say about the story but I'm way too sleepy now (it's 2am here) so I might get to it later if I remember. The conclusion is that I recommend the book. <<less

This type of angsty, crematorium novels aren't usually the type of novels I enjoy, but I decided to give this one a try since it was so short, which usually means there's a concise and to-the-point storyline. Sometimes those super long, 1000+ chapter novels drive me crazy because they really don't appear to be plotted out very well and are just dragged on to be dragged on. This one seemed short and simple, so I decided to give it a try, and I really was surprised to enjoy it as... more>> much as I did.

There are some reviews that blame the MC, some reviews that blame the ML, but honestly both characters were at fault for what happened in the first life. Both characters were flawed and continue to be flawed, which I think really is the point. There is a lot of issues that, yes, could have been resolved or never become a problem if there was actual communication from the parties involved - but that's one of the flaws of the characters.

Some spoilers about the past life:

Spoiler

The MC was too simple for palace/harem life and thinks that love should be enough, and was always just impulsive and acting on his emotions. This resulted in him basically being manipulated and pushed by other parties as a result, and he never seemed to realize that those people were not on his side. He was also manipulated into self-harming, which also wasn't the best for his mental state, but he was basically just a pawn the entire time. His life honestly would have been a lot easier and better if he had ended up married to someone else instead of the emperor, because he really was not suited for that kind of manipulative environment.

The ML, on the other hand, was too calculating and distanced himself emotionally so he could be the perfect emperor. Yes, he did actually love the MC the entire time, but he didn't want to love the MC that much and it never stopped him from doing things that hurt the MC. He KNEW his actions would hurt the MC, and he did them on purpose - sometimes because it was politically necessary, sometimes because it made him look better, and sometimes just because he thought it would "temper" the MC and teach MC a lesson that would make the MC's personality more suitable to be the emperor's spouse. Which, you know, is not what you do in a relationship.

[collapse]

So to say that the overall issue is just misunderstandings kind of skims over the main issue in their past lives, which is that these were actually manipulations that were done on purpose by various parties for various reasons, including the ML. Of course, there were times where the MC had selective hearing due to his simple love-conquers-all obsessive nature, so, yeah, both characters had flaws that contributed to the overall situation.

I think that's why I enjoyed the story, because both characters realized their flaws and decided they weren't going to do that for the second life. I also didn't find anything the MC said or did to the ML to be that bad, nothing worse than what happened in the previous life.

I don't know if I will read this story again, but I did like it overall. <<less

Ok, so, well, it's a somewhat good story, although not very healthy, I just wanted to reply to those reviews that said the ML's behaviour was all the MC's fault and that it was the only thing the ML could do to ignore, humiliate, lie and exclude the MC in the first life.

I just wanted to say that the MC didn't start out paranoid, crazy and prone to self-harm. It is clearly shown that he progressively became like that DUE to the ML's and his family's lies, secrets and behaviour... more>> alongside with the empress dowager's manipulations.

He was obviously shown as obedient and extremely giving at the start of their relationship, if extremely clingy. However, the ML felt he was progressively more bothersome and annoying, not understanding things... even though he wasn't told anything so he didn't even know there was anything to understand. He was only told to be good, be obedient and to shut up and stay good in his palace where the ML would visit him when he was free. And his family agreed with the ML's evaluation even though they only got to know him for, like, a year at most.

I mean, it was true he was somewhat naive and stubborn and completely not caring about anything else apart from the ML but exactly because of that if he got to explain things to him seriously he would have taken his side like he did in other occasions. And I don't even mean when the empress already got her claws into him but way earlier. Also, ok, it is perfect behaviour to be expected from a chinese emperor in ancient times but not anything good from a partner, nor a good husband. Thus I cannot understand how people can put all the blame on the MC and condone the ML's behaviour (before rebirth) in this story.

It's good that he repented later on, paid for his mistakes (even a bit too much I feel like) corrected his ways and we got to know why he behaved the way he did with the empress dowager. However I still felt the ML didn't really respect the MC even after rebirth at times, simply "coaxing" him like a child and obeying his whims just because he felt he owed him.

Still, this aspect was not really all that prominent (from the ML at least, not from the MC's family, although they apparently were always on his side in their own way) after rebirth, they got to clear the air and made new promises so it didn't bother me too much.

Aside from that, I fell like whichever type of relationship is good if it is what is wanted freely and consciously from both parties and doesn'thurt anybody. This story explores a kind of terribly obsessive and extreme form of love which would not be considered healthy anywhere else.

It was interesting to see unfolded in this way between willing subjects. It's extremely deep and complex and crazy. The pity is that they kept missing each other and simply tortured each other for a long time before somewhat coming to a resolution. <<less

domestic abuse (mentally and physicaly on my perspective) to ML: even MC know the whole truth he still do that a little bit, blood and gore (f*ck.. ML cut his meat and blood to feed cursed/witchcraft thingie? snake? Lantern? and in the end that snake ate his whole body left only bone) aiii this one not good for my old heart, thoughts of su*cide, self-harm (ML stabbing himself to make MC happy and first time ML stab himself and MC was indiffrent makes me cry buckets) and violence (most common in ancient historical china theme which I dont mind as long it warned in tags)

[collapse]

so if your are easily triggered by one of these things I would suggest not reading this lightly.

Character: good character development on ML, not much on MC.

Both ML and MC is masochistic character. "You do that to me, I will torture you in this life and other person it was my fault... all of it my fault, I accept your abuse". Both was wrong here okay!!! Not only you ML! MC got his wrong in the past toooo... puiiii... I want to slap both of them.

Mc? He a narcissistic person. Quite childish. He dont thought to deep about 'why and what' when ML potrayed his side story MC just like 'oh.. hmm.. ah' and then goes to another thing or topic. He think very deeply about others wrong and quite lightly about his own wrong. I dont like him much.

Ml? I must say you very pitiful person but I understand why you ignore MC in past. Just in present dont blame your self too much, see it has eaten you!. <<less

It’s kinda sad, because they were manipulated by external forces, and misunderstandings thats leads to the tragedy. But mostly also their own selfish and growing up background and their distorted personalities makes the cut too. It’s a good read. Not actually very heavy but still abit heart wrenching. For me psychologically it’s not there yet but it’s a good different perspective of the normal behaviour regards MC and ML relationship, in these kind of story. Thank you

I can't keep reading it.

Not because the translation is bad, but it's because of the plot and the characters. I get that this novel have an element of revenge and regret but in my opinion MC crossed that ages ago. The relationship itself is toxic whether before or after reborn, I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

Putting aside the "revenge plot" by MC, his character is just not likeable. He is narrow minded and childish even though there's a rebirth event in the middle of it. I don't... more>> think side stories or explanations would make me have any resemblance of pity for him because he's just ridiculous as a main character. Why? Because all the things that hurt him is no one's fault but himself. Then, after going through it and coming back to life so he can try to reflect? He decided to put the blame to someone else and instead he became more petty and vicious. What a waste of a rebirth chance, can't help but think the heaven must've cried for the wasted effort on this kind of individual.

In the relationship department, they just torment each other. There's nothing interesting or to root for. The difference is who's doing the torture to the other party. Reading it is not only painful, it is also boring so I decided to drop it.

After writing the review, 3 stars are too high for me. This is a 2 at max. <<less

No.

I should have read some reviews because this is dog blood trauma p*rn.

Both protagonists are traumatized since childhood and fall for each other. All of their first life problems stem from this but like damn were they living in the darkest timeline.

Not that they don't also have rebirth timeline maiming because happens more than once.

Second time around, they are both reborn. However, they are reborn from basically their individual darkest moments and have different reactions to that.

Tired of those scum novels where the MC takes back the ML very quickly after a few words of apology?

Try this one.

MC is not a nice forgiving person at all and thoroughly tortures the ML (maybe even excessively?) for the ML's mistakes. Actually despite feeling that the MC was somewhat excessive, I quite enjoyed the MC's eloquence in describing his viewpoint.

Spoiler

Just because someone (the ML) had good intentions when doing something, doesn't excuse the hurt that it caused the victim (the MC).

[collapse]

The author very cleverly set up the ML's relationship with his mom to mirror his relationship with the MC

Spoiler

The author showed how the ML was physically abused by the Empress Dowager and how she constantly rationalized her abuse as being from her "love" for him. The ML had also peacefully endured her abuse because he attributed to his mother's love.

But the truth is, even if the empress dowager had truly loved the ML and even if her abuse helped him become the Emperor, does that excuse the pain and suffering and trauma he went through? No.

This is a mirror to the ML and MC relationship- the ML genuinely loved the MC but commited acts that had traumatized and caused immense pain to the MC. The MC, conversely, never did a single thing to torture the ML with.

Should the MC just endure the ML's neglect or emotional abuse just because the ML did not intend to hurt him or because the ML loved him? No.

Sadly, their relationship was vastly unequal from the beginning (not just emotionally, also in power the ML was the emperor), and that's the crux of the matter and why the rebirth MC would push back to harshly against the ML, which is something he had never done before.

[collapse]

This is one of those novels where both sides made mistakes that were understandable, neither were completely right or wrong, though the ML did the most injury to the MC.

Great translation, story was very angst and melodramatic but hard to put down. <<less

I am glad someone is mentioning that the MC actions are deplorable, my genuine sympathies with the ML. If you are reading this in the context of Imperial China, rule of Emperor, the actions of MC are like of an obsessive teenager not behaviours of a dignified Empress.
MC own words/thoughts he admits that he listened to the advice of bad people to manipulate the Emperor actions. So why should the reader sympathize with him, especially if such manipulations led to Emperor destabilizing his empire for the sake of his wife/Empress whims.
MC admits he was paranoid constantly of anyone approaching ML or attempting to steal his affections, which again caused him to kill/persecute innocent people. He even went so far as using the secret police under the MC control to suppress the ML. I can sympathize why ML wanted to eventually get rid of MC.
ML never actually physically cheats on the MC, even the MC admits to it as much but he was jealous always even after constant assurance from the ML that the concubines are necessary to keep the ministers in court in line.

This is the laughable part. MC feels no regret or remorse for any of his actions that actually hurt his beloved Emperor, he only feels sorry for himself and his family, which is the ultimate irony because he did that to himself by forcing the Emperor hand with his bad decisions. If you take the context of the story of being set in Ancient China, it looks like Emperor was trying to stabilize his rule while his scheming jealous paranoid wife made it thousand times difficult time for him by empowering his enemies, scaring off his allies, and making him look weak when he is unable to control his Empress, so eventually he was forced to chose a side and he chose country over MC even if he loved the MC deeply.

All the blame is dumped on ML because MC commits su*cide which is the last thing ML wanted and he suffers greatly for it, but what is looked over is the years of abuse/pressure the MC heaps on the ML which finally causes him to snap. I think we all have read lots of abuse stories where the ML is usually the abuser but most of the time their actins are not justified, but seems like the author itself is writing this story justifying MC neurotic behaviour. There is no real redemption reflection from the MC side. At the start we read MC commit su*cide, we go awwwwwww poor MC, then we get the context of it then it is like what a dumb ass poor ML.

Lastly I think ML loved MC more because ML saw MC for who he was flaws and all and tried to cherish him for as long as he could until MC made it impossible, but the MC love for ML was narcissistic. MC thoughts after his rebirth where all me me me me me never once does he consider ML problems, MC even writes off his mistakes as ML fault lolzzzzz.

Not gonna lie, this novel is fun if you're looking for melodramatic angst or would just like to see an ML suffer. Considering what we know of MC's previous life, seeing the ML's regret and anguish in the first 25 chapters or so is very satisfying.

That being said though, MC isn't entirely blameless here and around Chapter 35, I was getting tired of seeing MC torture ML without any hint of self-reflection on his own actions in his past life. Not saying ML should be easily forgiven but MC should... more>> really have developed some self-awareness at that point and not pin all the blame on ML.

Both ML and MC have made mistakes and, honestly, many of the tragedies in the past life could have been avoided If. They. Had. Just. Communicated.

Spoiler

MC and ML found out that they were both reborn and these two idiots did not bother to talk it out. Like seriously, wasn't that the perfect opportunity to lay everything out in the open? I get that ML is unbelievably bad at expressing himself while MC has closed himself off, which makes talking hard for them, but as a reader, this just got really frustrating.

[collapse]

Despite my frustrations with this novel though, it's still entertaining enough and I won't discourage anyone from reading it, provided, that you adjust your expectations accordingly. <<less

Its a damn good story totally worth the read. Its about how MC gets his revenge on scum gong. To be more precise its like only revenge series. MC and ML both come back in time. ML abandoned MC, MC was literally obsessed with ml. But ML let him down and wronged him in many ways. MC attempted su*cide and reincarnated then he rebuild his relationship with his family and also MC is really cruel, unrestrained type of a person.

Also if u think that its mc's own fault that he... more>> died he should have never fallen for him that bad and should have never done this or that then u are wrong him being obsessive was only cuz of times when ML approached him, like when his mother died and he closed of to the world. So basically for MC ML was the only one in his life. And u would be obsessed with someone like that <<less

My current thoughts on this novel:

In terms of plot, its focused on the entanglement between the ML & MC from their 1st life into their second. Was it well written? Sorta. Did I enjoy it? No.

Simple fact is that after a while, I got bored of Yun Qingci (MC) and his nasty ways.

... more>> It's gets really boring reading how repetitive he is. Yun Qingci's thinking in this novel is this:

  • Something goes wrong? Blame ML.
  • Stubbed my own toe? Blame ML.
  • Weather changes? Blame ML
  • Gets cold at night? Blame ML.
On a sidenote: The reasons he blames the ML for in the novel are for stuff way more extreme & petty.

Yun Qingci, the MC is just a classic example of a walking disaster... I felt zero sympathy for him at all. If you read this novel, you start to notice that the cause of all his suffering was not Li Ying but himself!

He feigns ignorance and tries to push the blame all on the ML. He blames his death on the ML even though it was his own dam fault!

Spoiler

Also the part about the 2 bodyguards he had with him that you find out about later. This loser is the cause of his own suffering!

[collapse]

At this point Yun Qingci would blame gravity on Li Ying if he could!!! He is unreasonable & just flat out cruel for no dam reason. If he was a cow in his first life, then he is a god dam female dog in his second life.

Yi Ling, the ML suffers from delusions of the heart & soul! This is the Shou you can't live without?!? I am shooketh. There isn't really much to say about him, except that he actually must have something mentally wrong with him!!! I'd go mentally insane I guess if my "true love" was Yun Qingci...

All in all this is the story of two messed up, self destructive individuals. They are both mentally stunted, do messed up things and even feed off of each other doing this nonsense.

Although I don't mind the premise of an extremely messed up relationship, I cannot stand Yun Qingci... like this dude is just full of it. This is a story lacking redemption with an extremely twisted MC & a deluded ML.

Notes on translation: The translation was fine, no complaints really.

Notes on rating: 3/5. Reason for my rating is the +2 for translation but think of that as a 10/10. +1 for the novel in itself. I would recommend reading this if you felt like going down a road that leads nowhere & barely has any push or pull to it. NU really needs to separate ratings so that I may give 5 stars for the translation ONLY because there is no way I am giving this a 5/5! This is borderline a 1 star!!! <<less
