This.... unfortunately, there's not much to say.

It may have been a 5-star novel for the first 800 chapters or so, but Er Gen loses his touch later on. A good author knows when to stop beating a dead horse. Quite disappointing, but then again, this sort of situation isn't uncommon.

It is a good introductory novel to Xianxia though, so if you are new to reading it is worth a shot.

Short review:

ISSTH was quite a good read, with the characters, plot, and pacing all very well done for a webnovel. For a cultivation novel, it was great because although it was 1600 chapters long, there were a lot of interesting parts and it did not feel very repetitive. I also respect how the MC doesn't form a harem, because of his dedication to the his partner, even though he had many opportunities to make one. Compared to all the other cultivation novels, although it doesn't completely blow away all... more>> the competition, it is a cut above the rest. That being said, it also has some drawbacks. Although a lot of characters do appear, a lot of them are there to serve as foil to the MC. On the flip side, a lot of characters are also essential even though they have not appeared for hundreds of chapters. There are slow parts too, especially the first 100 chapters or so of the story, and some other parts as well that seemed to be very boring to me, but that was a small part of the story. All in all, if you like cultivation novels, ISSTH will definitely not disappoint, especially if you hate harem novels <<less

The Dao is not a goal but a path one must walk.

ISSTH walks that path and you fall in love with the world this story creates. Revisiting places hundreds of chapters old and fulfilling promises made centuries ago.

ISSTH is not perfect, it is not complete, for it is a path one must walk and every reader will come out of this story with with unique experience.

This is not just a story, It is the life of Meng Hao put on paper.

I Shall Seal the Heavens is, to put it simply, one of the best chinese novel there is. Well, this one sentence sums it up, if you haven't read it yet, do it now...

Alright, I'll try to detail why I have such an opinion about it, but be warned, my skills are insufficient to give you an appropriate impression of this masterpiece.

Er Gen is one of the best chinese novelist there is. His previous stories are amazingly well written, and the one I'm criticizing now is no exception.... more>> The plot is extremely well done, its pacing neither too fast or too slow and with no filler chapter which are usually expected in this sort of novel. Not only that, the author disseminates numerous details (more or less mysterious), even close to the ending, which at first may seem trivial or meaningless, but at one moment or another, they connect and shed light on a significant plot point. Add to that multiple twists, turns, comebacks, revelations and a oftentimes comedic style, and you'll get a story with a coherent whole, that will never bore you and keep you on edge till the (fitting) end. On a side note, there are plenty of evocations and connections to the writer previous works Beseech the Devil and Renegade Immortal (especially in the latter chapters), but you will lose nothing if you haven't read them yet (as a matter of fact, unless you can read Chinese, you can't have read these novel now, since they haven't been fully translated yet).

For the characters, if you're tired of the classic macho, egomaniac, shallow, sociopaths, don't worry you won't find them with this author. Also, don't expect handkerchief characters, Er Gen never forgets his core cast and makes sure to remember them until the end of the story. Each of them has a well defined personnality, with its unique merits, flaws and quirks, some of them which will give you great moments of comedy (often) or sadness (not as often, but they make you cry, I can testify of this). Their relation with the main character can be simple or complex, constant or changing, obscure until a given plot point, but they never feel like they're mere extras.

And what a main character he is! Meng Hao is a truly multifarious character. While his core remains the same through the whole story in its integrity, this clever and adaptative "hero" takes on numerous aspects in order to, first survive, then prosper and finally reach the pinacle of the merciless cultivation world. He will be, in random order, a con-man, a leader, a scholar, a demon, a warrior, an immortal, a devoted husband, a genocider, a carpenter, a son, a rogue, a savior... But whatever the role he takes, his wits and persistence remain his forte.

Beside Meng Hao, the author also puts a serious work into the romance aspect of the novel. As a result, what is usually a weak spot in this genre is here a strength. While the romance-building is a slow process and meets numerous obstacles, it never feels cheap or artificial. Meng Hao's love interest is not the most outstanding character around, but she is well- rounded, sympathetic and a great person in her own right.

Finally, the last reason why this novel is so exceptionnal is the quality of the translation. Deathblade, with the help of his wife, provides a truly top notch quality translation, in which he preserves the spirit and the emotions of Er Gen's work. That he was able to maintain such a high rate and level of translation is worthy of praise, especially that he did so, at one time while having a full time job, before moving fully to professionnal. He was later able to gain access to the author himself and his approval for the translation, which only improved the finest points. (On a side note, Deathblade also got Er Gen's approval to translate his novels after I Shall Seal the Heavens, which is definitely a good thing.)

So, I hope you understand why I love this novel so much. Now, go to Wuxiaworld and read I Shall Seal the Heavens (you'll also find Renegade Immortal and A Will Eternal, by the same author, there).

P.S: Many thanks to Er Gen, Deathblade and Madam Deathblade. <<less

Of this type of Chinese xianxia novel, ISSTH is perhaps one of the finest in its execution. While it's true that if you've read one of them, you've read all of them, ISSTH is a fantastic implementation of the tried and true principle. The quality of language is above average, and the translator has done a truly excellent job. To me, while the novel rates only 4* by itself, the translator's diligence clearly shows, prompting me to rate 5*.

This novel isn't suitable for people who don't enjoy the typical Chinese... more>> xianxia formula, as it truly is just more of the same. However, if you enjoy or don't mind the type of novel, I'd encourage you to give this one a try. <<less

A story about an unassuming, mild-mannered scholar who stumbles onto the path of becoming a Chosen of Khorne. Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the Skull Throne! Also animal r*pe jokes. 5 stars.

Edit: Dammit, up to the space arc and I'm already regretting the 5 stars. Pretty much every bad trope you've read in every other Chinese WN. Back to 3 stars in the space arc.

- Repetitive writing; lots of recaps and explaining the obvious. As soon as a large unit of measurement comes up expect 2+ chapters of... more>> pointless cultivation contests and crowd reactions ("OMG! He's at 18, 000m!" "OMFG! He's at 20, 000m!" b*tch, how are you even measuring?). As a result I skim read the text nowadays.
- Nonsensical & inconsistent power system. Soul lamps, wtf? Summoning a bridge isn't a deep or impressive attack skill no matter how you try to dress it up (how do you even use it to block experts, can't they fly around it?). Trying to visualize 2 people throwing illusionary rivers and mountains (the amount of which keeps growing; I think the highest count so far has been 100, 000) at each other is ridiculous. MC gains a growing collection of OP skills, eg: instant kill Midas Touch, which he never uses again. Oh, he can transform into a planet? Sure why not. Fights feel kinda meh as the rules of the universe feel vague and unadhered to.
- Faulty understanding of basic physics (shattering liquids, punching lightning/liquids to powder, air in space, the entire structure of the dimension they live in, etc). It's tolerable before the space arc then it gets really noticeable.
- Lack of visual descriptions. Herbalism profession also has a lot of interesting descriptions, but when it comes to alchemy (actual pills & recipes) it's strangely lacking in comparison (generally pills consumed are referenced in general terms, whereas recipes aren't even mentioned).
- Story feels like it revolves more around avenging slights and d*ck measuring contests than adventuring (so much disdain).
- Dictating morals through narration ("no right or wrong in war" and other spoon-fed crap).
- Inconsistent MC and Peter Pan syndrome. I liked the character development he had up until his Spirit Severing; you could feel that his character was maturing. Then he reverted back into a teenager to fight with other centuries-old teenagers.
- One dimensional side characters that don't get much screen time or development. Chen Fan is a weird exception where he got a 1 chapter info dump of a background story change. <<less

Great novel. A gem among its class. Theres still a bit flaw here and there but definitely not as exaggerated by some people down here. A guy skimmed half of the chapters and told how boring it is. Some have even read just for 300 chaps and already made a review like he has already read all 1613 chapters. It is like watching (or skim *cough cough*) a 2hour movie only to stop at ~20mins mark because the intro is too deep for you to understand.

Theres a merit to some... more>> negative review tho ; side characters tossed aside etc but pretty sure most of the xianxia do this. Personally I think er gen did his best to bring the relevant side characters from early chapters (shui, guyiding, pill demon etc) but one can only bring so much before people start complaining 'too many side characters bs' and the vicious cycle continues.

I have been following most of the current novels here in novelupdates which have 50 chaps or more (means I read them everytime a chapter is out) and personally imo nothing beats issth in term of intricacy or planning. Everyone has their own taste but to review a novel as bad based on skimming and half ass reading is just idiocy. This novel is meant for patient people. If you just want action straight from the beginning, go read.. Idk whatever else.. For the one leaving 0 star as review, do tell me which novel is better than this cause I havent found one yet and I dont mind adding one or a hundred more. <<less

I honestly don't know what to say. ISSTH is just one of those gems that can make you read it through and forget about your responsibilities (in a good way). I would have gone over this in a deep review but since I'm not good at that Ill just tell you that while this book may seem overhyped, it is not. Read it, you won't regret one bit.

Okay, I'm writing this now after looking at the insane amount of people who kind of ignore anything about this novel that isn't awesome.

I won't describe what's good about it simply because you have A LOT of other reviewers who have done all I could say and more. So as someone reading it and hasn't dropped it I will some of the problems with this series. Firstly if you have read any of er gens previous works you will notice how he straight up copy pastes ENTIRE SETTINGS AND ARCS... more>> into this story. The next complaint? Get ready for a lot of snorting. The fights have two modes. Either the MC can completely dominate the opponent/s blow for blow or the exact opposite and he can barely survive the encounter. This is not as bad early on but really shows its head in the fights past a certain level in his cultivation. <<less

One of my top favorite novels to read because its funny and the plot is very engaging. The MC character development is shaped through his encounters not through rebirth/reincarnation... it might seem slow at first, but it gets pretty good when the action starts. Although there's no harem tag there. hmm idk I guess its harem in the sense some of the girls has interest in him but he doesn't reciprocate.

I'll be honest, I almost dropped this novel multiple times while reading book 1. It was slow paced and kind of boring imo, but dont let that stop you. After I got through it, this novel definitely became one of my all time favorites. Incredible story.

The novel is pretty good except for some parts where I feel like throwing up and dropping the novel yet I grit my teeth and continue to read like XU QING (The worst female protaganist in any CN. You will find a better female lead in literally any other low rated harem novel)

Xu Qing speaks only 3 sentences (which she continues to repeat for 500 chapters). Even a side character has more dialogues and personality than her. Literally the reason she falls in love with MC is because he... more>> gives her a fckin pill!!! And one chapter later she falls in love with MC. The only thing they did in the beginning was stare at the skies in silence for a day without speaking. There is literally no romance. If that was all there was to it, it wouldnt have bothered me that much but literally MC puts so much importance to her that it gets annoying everytime her name is mentioned.

The next bad thing about the book is the MC. Meng Hao was initially a really well built character and I liked his personality but after a few 100 chapters his personality completely went 180. He literally kills people for no reason and acts extremely impulsive and hot blooded and he is sometimes more arrogant than most antagonists.

Other than that plotline is good, some characters are good, world building is meh.. And some stuff gets confusing af.

I would definetely recommend this book if you have no other books to read. (7/10) -good <<less

Lord fifth literally saves the whole novel. The novel was real bad at first then improved later on then went straight to tr*sh. Such a waste of a potential novel. Oh well, im talking about a Chinese novel, why do I put my expectation so high.

Overrated, boring, average.

There is nothing special about this novel to get so many 5star reviews.

There are many cultivation novels that just make you want to go back and read again and again some of its arcs, because of how enjoyable they are (e.g Against the Gods, Martial World) , and then there is this novels with so many 5star reviews that it amazes me. Honestly im speechless, because I love wuxia novels and so many times I reread them again but this one I even droped pretty early.

I dont know... more>> how else to describe this story other than boring.

Plus MC is so hypocritical at times which is one of the worst traits I find in novel MC's.

Anyway 2star for you! <<less

Most of the novel, MC is chased around by everyone. Half of the v1 is Someone chasing MC trying to kill him.

MC can kill millions of dudes and average looking woman but he will never kill jade beauties when they try multiple times to kill him.

He really loves saving clans, for no reason at all and give them his protection treasure then leave. He goes to clan, they try to kill him, and try to screw him over when he was saving their clan. After he gets angry, they say... more>> sorry them MC spends 200 chapters to save them, risking his life for them and in the end he gets no benefits. He does that multiple times

He gains oppertunities that will make his future brighter like qi realm has 10 levels, he goes to 12 levels, that makes his breakthrough to the next level more diificult. He gets 12 level of qi, is invinsible at qi realm then a higher cultivation man will come and chase him around.

He will breakthrogh to the next realm, gain additional stuff, becomes invincible in his realm and then a more powerful guy comes and chase him around.

He has powerful treasures but he cant use them because of plot. He had an super op pet but he was asleep till 2 realms until he was barely any use to MC.

MC will get nerfed throughout <<less

Meng Hao was a peaceful Daoist, but suddenly, his desire to kill the Worthless Villain was intense to the extreme. He desired to be powerful. He knew that only by being powerful could he avoid being an insect that others could trample upon and crush.

His eyes emitted a cold, callous, shocking, threatening, unbelievable domineering, frigid iciness and killing intent. Even more astonishing, he had experienced a breakthrough in the process of glaring at his enemy. Meng Hao reached into his Bag of Infinite Treasure and drew out the random rock he collected about fifty eight chapters ago but never mentioned since then. It was a peerless Daoist treasure and the moment it appeared, it twisted Heaven and Earth. The passerby cultivators shivered, although they hated this person who had appeared out of nowhere and had made fun of him just a second ago, but their eyes filled with conflict, shock, reverence, admiration, and envy, for clearly Meng Hao was peerless and matchless compared to all those that had come before and after. The Worthless Villan gave a slow, agonizing cry of "Impossible!", then emitted a popping sound, collapsing into dust. All of this takes some time to describe, but in fact happened in an instant.

Alas, our dear protagonist Meng Hao. This is it, seemingly the most high traffic novel on... more>> this site. My hopes coming in were very high due to the reviews.

Unfortunately, I can't see why this book is so loved? Most interactions especially after Vol 2 follow a very standard template.

I actually picked up this novel twice. The first time, I got to chapter five and thought it was not worth reading. The second time, on the recommendation of the reviews, I powered through to chapter 100 or so, where I started to have expectations. There was all of these techniques, all these sects being mentioned, it seemed to be the setup for something large and excellent to pay off. Indeed there were some sparkling points in volume 2 and 3. However, as I reached volume 4 I lost motivation. More and more I can't feel for Meng Hao, he's really a pill consuming level up machine, not much like a real human. Here I'll list the good and Bad:

Good points

    • The translator Deathblade!
    • MH is pretty smart and that's the only outstanding thing about him (at the beginning), so it's acceptable and not too OP (at the beginning!).
    • The adventures/gadgets are inventive. The copper mirror for instance is unique lol.
    • MH is openly evil and a conman, so there's no expectations about the kind of path that he follows to gain power. There's this 'Dao' concept that supposedly guides the book, but I warn you it's not actually very much like the actual Dao, it's more like the author has a philosophical way to comment on what MH feels like is right.
    • MH gains all of his treasures at the beginning by randomly stealing stuff or getting lucky. The side characters are justifiably pretty mad at him, so whenever they uncover his secret identities, they squabble, it's pretty funny.
    • Some side characters e.g. Patriarch Reliance are quite evil and funny, but sadly, as 2d as MH himself.
Things that irked me about this series (spoilers) !

Spoiler
    • "He desired to be powerful. He knew that only by being powerful could he avoid being an insect that others could trample upon and crush." This is Meng Hao's 'Dao' at the beginning and it's supposed to guide his ascent. But when he gets powerful and he simply becomes the one that does the crushing. Seriously, he's not really nice to anyone. Even his friends such as fatty, Bai Yunlai, etc. just become worshippers. Further, characteristics of MH that appear in others, such as Li Daoyi, are seen as repulsive or 'arrogance'.
    • MH is totally alone and has zero equals, especially starting in Book 3 or so. Everyone is either too beneath him or too above him. He has some passing one sided (guess which side) relations with women but I actually think his most genuine relationship is with his mastiff, which promptly disappears for 100+ chapters and re-emerges as just a tool.
    • Book emphasizes over and over again that he doesn't like killing but it 'has to happen', ironically many times while he's in the middle of a total slaughter. E.g. when he kills the "Winding Stream Sect disciple" who's not even worthy of a name, he does so in a few breaths, sighs, thinks about life, and then kills all the rest of his companions. It happens multiple times, and thinking back on his brutality the author only has this to say: "
. Meng Hao had matured, both in his personality and in his methods of dealing with matters." Lol
    • The author introduces many subplots simply to make MH look good. E.g. the pointless competition with Chen Jiaxi. If not to anoint MH, what was it for?? Also Zhou Dekun and Gu La follow the exact same script. It's like no one can grow their powers except for MH so that as he levels up, MH owns his past enemies more and more.
    • Deus ex machina for stealing things. Not sure if MH works that hard, but he manages to get all this treasure and he doesn't really need to change anything about himself to advance in cultivation. By the time Book 4 rolls around it's like every inch of his body has a special ancient power.
    • The cultivation system of the book makes less and less sense over time. There's no logical progression to the way MH gains powers. He is able to defeat people far above him after Volume 2 or so.
    • He levels up quite differently than everyone else due to all of his priceless artefacts. At its core I believe his foremost identity is as a demon sealer, but the heritage is not well explained. The author starts off by giving messages from the demon sealing thing, which MH sometimes doesn't act on anyways, and that the author later has to explain what they mean. But then there are no more messages and MH just strides off into the distance acquiring more ancestral powers from other clans? For instance, in Book 4 he's into some kind of completely new levelling up system, totem power.
[collapse]

A confession: I only started reading this for the second time since some said this book is better than Douluo 1. However I now feel a bit indignant on behalf of Tang San. If I have to say one thing, let me say that the workings central to Tang San's big power up in Chapter 161-ish were explained within the first ten chapters.

In the end I stopped reading ISSTH because Meng Hao's basically solo journey of destiny and materialism made me feel somewhat empty inside. I've been so dedicated too... reading a whole 400 chapters... but no more. <<less

I forgot to choose the rating, so I put it here: 5/10

As I always do, I will put the pros and cons of the novel

Pros:

  • The MC is very intelligent, he get some cheat items but use it in very clever ways
  • The MC has a good character development
  • Secondary characters have different and definied personalities!! Rarely seen in a xianxia and some were developed (For example: Chen Fen, Fatty, Han Bei, Ke Jiusi, Fang Yu, Chu Yuyan, Wang Tengfei...)
  • A few characters are freaking hilarous or very charismatic (Meat Jelly, Lord Fifth, Zhou Dekun, Patriarch Reliance)
  • I really love the way that the author use philosophy in the novel, it makes sense in it's universe, if you understand you would see that it's not pretentious bullsh*t. (The fight of philosophy in the alchemy arc was really good)
  • The comedy is very good.
  • The plot is very well planned and it is really foreshadowed.
  • The author remember the characters.
  • It has a few emotional moments that were so good (The Mastiff, in the war on the western desert and with Ke Jiusi)
  • The cultivation system is interesting (not as good as IET ones, IET is so much better than other Xianxia author in this kind of thing)
  • The world building is fine
  • The author remembers the side characters!!
  • I like how half of the story was him struggling but now he still does but he has advantages because the MC worked hard to get where he is now, so it makes all of his work worth it (I'm talking about the story after chapter 800)
Cons:

  • Too much coughing blood and "this take some time to describe it but happened in a moment" bullsh*t
  • Slow start, it was a bit boring the first 100+ chapters
  • Spoiler

The first arc in the Reliance Sect, anything from the rules about the school make any sense. Why would you put your own students to kill each other in battlefields? you should train them and then go to outside world to fight and grow stronger there not kill your own students. That was something DE done well. I think that was the reason why the sect was the worst of all.

    [collapse]
  • At the beginning the cultivation depends a lot in pills
  • The author tends to make new techniques or things that you can use when you get to that level of cultivation but when the MC gets to that level, it doesn't matter anymore. What's the point of doing that? Here are a few examples:
    Spoiler

-Core qi: it was introduced like something amazing and important and then never mentioned again. Domain: Same problem. The ability to control natural laws and that kind of things: This was something you could get once you were Spirit Severing, (also when you reached Dao seeking, it was like more control over the laws or something like that), but when the MC reached it, the author totally forgot about it or it doesn't mattered sh*t to him.

    [collapse]
  • The fights tends to be boring, at least for me because it is people waving fingers and throwing abilities to each other but I liked some of the abilities (like the Blood Inmortal ones or the time swords)
  • It has plot holes (one of the worst was when the sect of Meng Hao had 800000 demon beast and the formation of Lord Fifth but were losing the battle, then the MC came and save the day, I think the author could have done it better than that)
  • The romance was so f*ck*ing bland, they barely interacted with each other but they love each other so much. Also the girl is so simple to be an important character like that, I think she should be less important than a secondary character and she could be good being that but as an important one she is too f*ck*ng simple and plain.
  • The chasing parts are the worst of all, so boring and extended needlessly.
  • Too much items and skills forgotten like:
    Spoiler

The skill to control demon beasts. The Wooden Swords. Dragon Soul. The Mastiff (I know it's not an item or skill, but I want to put him here to not waste another point only for it) And the list goes on, especially for items

    [collapse]
I'm on the chapter 1129 but put it on hold because it has gotten so boring for me, I can't bear it anymore, the battles are just boring and the story right now it's too much about fighting so if in the future I find time maybe I will try to finish it. So in conclusion this had good arcs but still I don't think is worth it to read it all, that's why I can't give it more than a 5/10. If I finish it I will update the review

TLDR:

While interesting, having many good side characters as its strong point, the story is inconsistent. Many stuff that are hinted at to be important are forgotten, many others magically appear. It is apparent that the author never planned the story farther than the next 100 chapters at any point.

The long review:

Took me more than 2 weeks to binge read through it. Imagine a sculptor that can sculpt a nose, lips, ears, eyes, etc... Now imagine that while he concentrates at sculpting the small details, they don't fit very well when... more>> you look at the big picture. That how this novel is.

The story is alright. The MC gets on his hands a certain multi-functioning cheat item that helps him somewhat. Sadly, the story is mostly driven by perpetual uncles. Somebody offends the MC, the MC beat him, the guy runs to his uncle/daddy/master, then the uncle is beaten and then runs to his uncle. The story progresses only because of the things that happen to the MC, he is never the driving factor. The author is addicted to making some impossible to solve crises for the MC, only to be solved by some preposterous coincidences.

The author is inconsistent. he throws many breadcrumbs throughout the story to hint at some future story elements. Then you build some theories around it in your head, only to find out that the author forgot about any of this. I will give some spoiler examples:

Spoiler

Wooden swords. They are hinted to be some amazing god slaying weapons. They also were supposed to be unlocked, and we even saw that the MC's mother has one of those swords and the hype was real. Sadly, the author forgot all about them latter in the story.

The pearl that Little Tiger character has. Mentioned once, 500 chapters later mentioned to belong to some ancient bad-ass cultivator that has many of those pearls. Little Tiger was supposed to inherit his legacy or something I guess. Too bad for him, the author forgot about it, LOL. Skip to the end of the story and somehow the pearl is a part of the mirror. What a boolsh*t.

Grand Dragoneer arc. There is a long arc in the story where the MC can control monsters with demonic ki. He is so good that even monsters that were tamed by other dragoneers switch sides when he command them. The arc ends, and the monster tamer thing is never mentioned again. He meets many monster throughout the story, but newer attempts to tame them again. Seriously WTF? Was it like a non canon fanfic arc or something? He even had this indestructible eyeless larva that was connected to him, never to be mentioned again.

Dawn immortal/MC's mother. The author hints that the Dawn Immortal is the mother of the resurrection lily. She comes to help him at some point, and then after an arc she is switched to be his real mother, and down immortal to be a separate thing.

The dragon soul thing. You would imagine that it is some important story element, right? Wrong. It was mentioned once more in the middle of the story, never to be mentioned again.

There was this devil from the soul sieve sect that the MC caught. Well sadly for him, he was immediately forgotten LOL.

The demon league or something. There is this immortal chick that belongs to some league of demons something. She invites the MC to come join them, sadly he (or the author) forgets.

The mirror shoots laser beams that makes furry/feathered creatures explode from their butts, ears, nose, etc... It was explained that the energy is just getting out from weak points in the body. Three arcs later and the author decides that instead it is a h**ny parrot that lives in the mirror that likes to hump stuff. I am not even kidding, it is the explanation the author chose to go with.

There was supposed to be this ladder climbing test to get the lord Li's scripture thing. The MC got through the first stage, but sadly the author forgot about it and it was never mentioned again.

When the MC combined 6 or 7 of his elements at some point, it gave him some visions about some butterfly coffin and it was some amazing hard core attack. Non of it was ever explained or talked about in the story again.

[collapse]

The list goes on and on. The author probably has some long term memory issues or something. The more I think about all of those plot hole elements the more insulted I feel as a reader.

Luckily there are some story elements that are awesome. Some even made me, a 30 years old man shed a tear. You don't read 1600 chapters if all is bad.

The main character is alright, and side characters are interesting with many different personalities, which many sh*tty novels fall at. For some reason the love interest in this story is dull and has no personality at all even after 1600 chapters. Hell, any random chick the MC meets has more personality than her. Throughout the story he barely even interacts with her. There are some awesome side characters that you will really come to care about. I would say that the author is pretty gifted in the character department, aside from the aforementioned love interest. Still better love story than Twilight.

The fights in this novel are terrible. The characters just blubber about some magical techniques, and that's it. At the beginning it was still entertaining and the author did try to include some martial arts, but he quickly gave up. The characters never ever learn actual martial arts even though they spend fighting all the time. Just make a breakthrough with some pills or inheritance and that's it. It is so bad apparently that at some point when a certain side character lost her magical abilities she couldn't fight mortals, in-spite of being previously an immortal with an immortal body that lived hundreds of years. Seriously, WTF?

Most of the time instead of fights there are chase sequences. The author got so addicted to chase sequences that gradually even fights turn into chase sequences.

The end of the story is horrible. Last 200 chapters where a torture to read through. Dull fights with zero stakes and half assed explanations about broken story elements. When I thought that it was finally over, to my astonishment the author throws some last minute curse thing that the MC spends another couple of chapters to solve. Why? What for? I seriously don't know.

The translation though is amazing. I have never encountered such a dedicated translator, and I read a lot of different novels (Japanese/Korean/Chinese). The translator even explains the Chinese name meanings of different characters and explains references from other novels.

I wrote a lot of negative things about the novel, but I still give it 3 stars because it did made me addicted enough to read it on and on non stop. When I stated writing the review I initially planned to give it 4 stars, but after organizing my thoughts it was apparent the the novel is not a 4 star material. Nevertheless, if you have some free time on your hands, and aware of the drawbacks, I would recommend to read it. <<less
