This novel starts out a little strange as it doesn't share much of the MC's past or her thoughts. Gradually, we learn about the pre-novel story but only when it's important to know it.

The MC is an up-and-coming actress. She's beautiful, smart, and generally well-liked by most of her colleagues. While easy-going on set, she has no problem face-slapping when necessary but doesn't actually go out of her way to target anyone. She always states that she wants fame and power but with justifiable reason. While in High School, other... more>> kids played a prank on her which had far-reaching consequences.

Outside the bullying for her weight and intelligence, these brats locked her in a storage room and took away her phone and bag. Because of this, her parents panicked and her father went to find her. Only for him to get hit by a drunk driver and die in the hospital.

This leads to her paternal family scheming for the settlement for her father's death which eventually cascades into the death of her mother.

The ML is a domineering CEO and while he starts off with a few red flags (he's borderline stalkerish), those flags quickly get overwhelmed by green ones. It's the typical "soft only for the MC" CEO trope but he also accepts the fact that the MC is not quite the angelic person everyone believes her to be. He just doesn't care about it because he has been in love with her for many years and has regretted not being more involved in her life.

After he was in a car accident that took his father's life, he was hospitalized for some time. The MC was also in the hospital for hormone therapy but was always smiling and happy, helping others and just being an all-around good person. Honestly, pre-story MC would have been hard not to love so it's no surprise that he has been in love with her since then.

After she returned, and he learned about what had happened to her, he regretted only checking in on her as he felt that he could have done something to help. That thinking is quickly replaced by being determined to ensure she lives the best life going forward.

The story begins with the MC's return. We don't see a lot of what she's done in the background but it's hinted that she's been planning and working things out for a while. It would have been nice to see but it's at least done in such a way that doesn't make it feel too forced. The story also takes place over several years (we hit 2 years about midway through the story) as it doesn't focus on the details of her filming. As the story progresses, we see her revenge play out.

There are several people who she takes "revenge" on but it's more like karma finally arrived. She only directly gets involved by providing information to the police about her parents' deaths or by hiring a private investigator. Otherwise, it's just by proxy of being there and having fans that the revenge takes place.

For example, the MC doesn't directly target the two main people responsible for the prank, her arrival causes their relationship to break apart. The guy has been looking for her for eight years out of guilt and his unspoken feelings for her (he claimed she had a crush on him which is what got all the other students to lock her in a storage closet). The girl has been living in paranoia as she's aware that the guy had a crush on the MC. The girl is also massively spoiled which led to her believing that people would side with her when she treated the MC like crap. Spoiler, it backfires massively.

We do get some satisfying ends to the antagonists. Pretty much everyone who wronged the MC gets their karmic reward although a few happened off-screen (such as the people who physically put her in the storage room). That being said, the ending suffers from the same problem as the beginning. It's "telling and not showing" us what happens (such as the MC and ML's wedding).

Overall, it's a fun read even if it's a bit hard to get into at first. <<less

Overall, it is enjoyable but the 3rd act is quite slow, a lot of the scenes are quite unnecessary. One other thing I find quite unnecessary is the male lead. At first, I didn’t understand why some reviewers seem to not like him but now I understand. He is actually quite useless. The only useful thing about him is his untouchable powerful status that is integral in helping the FL move forward in her revenge. But honestly, if he’s not there, I think nothing would’ve changed and after a while,... more>> more chapters I read, I felt the same thing with the romance even though most times I love romance even when it seems unnecessary. <<less

I just finished the novel and had to post a review. It's a wonderful story. The FL/MC is not your typical heroine, and the ML is not your typical Male-God. She's self-reliant, highly intelligent and mature. At times it feels like she's just too emotionless, but overall it's a unique character setup.

The flow of the story is very smooth, and even if there were 1000 more chapters it'd not have been boring. I wish the story were longer.

If there's anything lacking that would be romance. One of the best stories... more>> I've read so far. Just wished that the author would focus more on writing boy-girl romance.

Lastly, a great job salute to The translator. <<less

I have a complicated feeling regarding this novel. The writing is good, the characters also quite realistic, the plot also promising and got a very subtle flow to make reader able to enjoy and get involved in the story. However the plot execution are not in my personal liking.

This story is written in realistic way, where the MC wants a revenge but lack a power to do it. She plan to use a public as her executioner. She had her means and plan but in reality it is truly lacking.... more>> It's understandable that you can't amazingly became a superhuman who can conquer everything just because you met a disaster, but in term of story I do really hope the MC could do the revenge in much more interesting and independent way. After all in the premise the focus of the story are much more in revenge with slight romance, but in reality we'll see the romance being brought as a boat for MC to manuver her revenge and even overshadow it. I just felt a lack of excitement because of this.

Ngl if it wasn't for the ML existence I highly doubt she would even able to stay in the public face. After all without a real power fame are truly meaningless. This story is a tragedy in the flowery path. <<less

It has been a while since I completed reading a novel lol.

Plot has some depth because of the mystery surrounding FL's motive of coming back to China, becoming an actress etc.

Romance isn't that wonderful? I mean the love is all from the ML's side, FL doesn't say 'i love you ' to him in the entire story I think. But that can be scratched up to her past.

I was confuse at first, I feel like the earlier chapters were like a flash, however as her background was unveiled then it gets smoother though some scenes quite lack execution and details. I would like it more if earlier chapters didn't feel like a flash though.

  • Beautiful and emotional storyline. The female lead has lead quite a tragic life but her latter days are better than the former.
  • The male lead is supportive and loving without being overbearing and dominating. It was refreshing and made the story fluffy

Pretty decent for a BG entertainment novel. But for a "revenge" novel, it's a meh. It's supposed to be the focus of Ning Xi's return but we didn't see how she got her revenge. When something bad happened to the bad guys, I had to guess whether it was something Ning Xi did or the ML or just plot armor bec we don't know exactly which one is from Ning Xi's maneuvering. Bec without the author showing us these, Ning Xi just seems too passive. Lyk okay she collected evidence... more>> and became famous, but in the face of the rich and the powerful whose family has deep roots, that's not enough! The lack of sophistication in the storytelling of the revenge was big turnoff for me that I can't help nitpicking.

Romance is pretty decent tho. ML is a devoted lover, sometimes maybe even be too devoted. He was more interesting when he was being all insecure abt whether Ning Xi really loves him or just using him.

Drama part is great. Ngl I cried many times. I read this novel twice btw and even during the 2nd read I still cried during the angsty parts. <<less

It's a very cliche karmic retribution kind of story. The few details that aren't in line with most other novels are:

  1. Sweet and devoted CEO that isn't the possessive/neurotic type.
  2. None existing drama and/or misunderstandings in the relationship.
  3. Bottom line of common sense.
The author tried to emphasize how different the FML was by actually writing the comparisons with "normal" CEO romance novels, which added a tone of comedy, but I appreciate the main topics of the story a lot.

However, the only lightweight point of the story is the romance itself. The relationship of... more>> the main couple is the only fluffy and source of relief of the entire novel. Otherwise, it is a heavy story.

Bullying, self-esteem issues, depression, su*cide, mu*der, greed, jealousy, etc. There were so many tear-jerking moments, specially in the later part of the story, all the antagonists are disgusting in one way, another or in all. Very satisfying to read them fall.

Pretty good as CN go. I was a little disappointed in the ending, as a person that really should have been put in prison apparently escaped that consequence. I felt the author just wanted to wrap things up, so she rushed through the last bit. FL was a deep character with a tragic past and ML was sweet, but a little too perfect to feel real. There were some plot holes, but it was entertaining and as well written as most of the works by this author.

Loved it! I like the pacing and romantic development between the FL and ML. FL wasn’t clingy and respected him. The ML is kind of stakerish but overall I guess wasn’t icky. The different perspectives were interesting and added to plot and not filler. But, I do wish there was more after it ended : (

I started reading it because of the author, I love re-reading To be a virtuous wife and Ascending, do not disturb a lot. I love how the author doesn't start with explaining the past, she leads us to guess and that's the thrilling part. I want to thank the translators for their work, it made the experience much better. We have a strong female lead and a devoting male lead, and if it looks like the typical comeback vengeance with faceslapping you're all quite wrong. This is a good josei novel without the unbearable fill-ins with online comments or long faceslapping conversations. If I have to point the negative characteristics it's that surprisingly-but also unsurprisingly- the Chinese nationalism is also present. Living abroad in United Kingdom, since when they eat earthworm cakes made of chocolate and worms???!!! Secondly, comparing this novel with the rest of the author... sight... I can't give 5 stars. Maybe because it tends to follow the cliche showbiz and entertainment webnovels, the charm the author can give has its limits. Third, the male lead as devoting and cute he may be... The approach of the relationship at the start was, in my opinion, so typically BIG BoSS that it put me a bit off. I don't want to be ranting but my expectations were high with all the author's previous work. But, all in all, this novel can rival with all that 2k chapter-novels full of crap. It was a pity that strong issues such as bullying and equal rights in the end were just background noise. The independence of women was much better displayed in her other novels. <<less

This was a touching story. Xixi was strongwilled, resourceful, talented, gorgeus and loveable. I also liked how our ML was so dedicated to her. It was a fun read.

This novel bare much resemblance to hidden marriage I can't help but compare. My rant from what I've read so far the ML in this novel throw his weight around a lot. From investing in her movie, letting the director know FL is important to him, getting rid of Weibo topic, and talking to the boss of FL ent company that she was an important person to him just make etc.

I just can't help but thinking bout LTX from hidden marriage. Even though LTX prob have bigger thigh than the... more>> ML here, he didn't throw his weight around that much and trust that NX can handle her own things unless things get real bad. Plus as a FL, NX in HM is just so much more of a badass than here.

Then again this is prob the case of 'is me not you' that I can't seem to want and continue this novel... <<less

The core of the story was interesting. It started out good but as with most stories that deals with acting and netizens, these stuffers are overdose that goes off from the main story line. If it was removed or summarized, I would not be surprised the main story can be wrapped up with half the chapters. It's to a point where I have skipped over any netizens comments and descriptions of drama pieces. Then deciding it was not worth the time to filter out these stuffers. Dropping it.

I’ve read the author’s other words and love the stories. Unfortunately, this one is a letdown. The school bullying story had potential but the way the story panned out was just meh. The FL is too OP, the ML has the personality of a cardboard, the side characters are meh as well.
Not my cup of tea. I find it difficult to believe this was penned by the same author as TBAVW, Ascending, very happy etc. I have re-read these stories numerous times. They are amazing. This story though... sigh. Nope, I don’t like it.

Can't really put into words how this story made me feel. Let's try fishing terms.

The hook, bait, and floater are impressive, but the line was a bit long and the sinker was pretty much just an invisible weight in the story. Let me put that into actual critique:

The Premise of the story is strong (The Hook) with a very deeply interesting plot history (The Bait) but the length between bits of actual history was/were played out a bit too long (The Line) and the whole thing was patched together with... more>> a mysterious helper (s) who is/are never mentioned leaving the MC as a mysterious ball of amazing abilities all the way past the end of the story (The Sinker or Weight that keeps the whole thing in the water/the story cohesive), and the ML is just too damn adorkable and reliable (The Floater to keep you from feeling too depressed for the entire fecal storms that are the events that had happened to the MC).

Overall, an enjoyable read with a slightly dissatisfying bit of plot armor that never really gets revealed in story terms. <<less

It's too Mary Sue for me, with Ning Xi you get a feeling she's someone hard to be close with, and so you feel a lack of connection most of the time.

And ML, urgh, he's a human helicopter, because he's just revolving around the MC a lot. Like, are you jobless?

In short, I cannot root for both of them.

Unfortunately this is going to be my first novel from Yue Xia Die Ying that I wont be reading till the end.

I like that author's works because of how she portrays her FMCs : and I feel like Ning Xi falls short compared to the other that i've seen so far.

I don't know if we, as readers not having a lot a insight of her thought process played a part in this, but I know for sure that the ML played a big part in the way I feel about... more>> her.

Almost to not say all of her problems are just solved without her knowledge by the OP ML (whose, by the way, sole purpose of existing in this world is to stalk love the MC, like the dude has zero personality which makes it even harder to stand his antics)

So yeah, basically I was disappointed, I came because I trusted the author and unfortunately this one is a miss for me <<less

Its actually pretty good but I could not keep w my short attention span near end. However, I absolutely love entertainment showbiz novels and I like it. MC alone is a worthy character, ML is only like a supporting character for her.

Still, I find it charming that he's very trusting of her and kept her in his mind even after a few years. It's lovely because I know this rarely happens in real life lol.
