The Tragedy of The Villainess

Seria, a social outcast, has changed.
Seria Stern, the wicked woman who made everyone tremble with fear, was now calm.

In fact, she wasn’t just changed, she was a completely different person.

The moment she realized that she had possessed the body of the villain Seria, in a romance novel, she had a hunch about the future and decided to live low.

She would avoid kidnapping and harassing the original heroine, hence preventing her death by decapitation at the hands of Kalis, the second male lead.

In order to avoid that, she had to fix her bad relationship with Kalis and even healed his injured arm.

Thanks to that she got engaged with him, so it’s all worked out.
Finally, the original heroine returned, and her husband, Lesche, should be on good terms with her now.

“I’ve been waiting to escort her, so…”

Lesche asked, resolutely cutting off Kalis’ words.

“Miss Seria, it would be better for you to choose. With whom would you want to go with?”

Something was strange.
The original, wasn’t it perfectly fine?

I'm not far into the novel yet, it seems to be quite good but I just needed to get something off my chest...

THE OG FIANCEE IS SUCH A B*STARD ONCE I GET MY HANDS ON HIM ILL CRACK HIM IN HALF LIKE A COCONUT. (‡▼益▼)

now dont let this change your mind to read this, I just wanted to warn readers to get their pitchforks (`∀´) Ψ and swords ready, because war is upon us! ٩ (^ᴗ^) ۶ also, it might just be because of a personal dislike but... more>> I hate the s*upid "male leads" that instead of admitting they like another woman or cheated blah blah blah they drag it on and cause the MC to feel like tr*sh. so I HATE THIS UGLY FUGLY FAKE ASS ML WHO CAN SUCK IT (‡▼益▼). the og-FL definitely got her age changed when she transmigrated because the term, man-baby suits her perfectly! (^◡^) っ✂❤but this is a super good novel read it im reading it out so I can see her happy with our beloved lesche (° ᴗ°) ~ð (/❛o❛) <333333333333333333 (now is this a rant or a review!? I need to get my act together T^T)

the reason I rated it a 4 besides being decent is that the first few chapters don't give enough information for me to clearly understand what is happening. also, the translation is by far one of the better ones ive read but it is a bit jumbly so it is a bit confusing for me, but it is definitely readable AND enjoyable. ٩ (^ᴗ^) ۶ while it is a bit cliche (which I love lol) her character is definitely going to experience character development since she didnt become OP from the beginning. while it sounds a bit cruel, I think she has to go through trails to change herself instead of becoming an entirely new person overnight (yk except 4 that time she took the villanesses body but...) I love the side characters so far and I NEED TO KEEP READING SO BYE <3

i wont be going in too much about the plot since i've seen reviews that perfectly encapsulate what I want to say.

i do agree that it is quite similar to Remarried Empress, but this is quite a lighter read compared to RE which goes hard on the "adult issues" department.

first up, I love Seria (FL) because of her blatant refusal of the cheating scum. Aside from that, I love how the author did not settle for just one personality. The "i will stop being cruel and start living quietly" and... more>> the "i wont be trampled on" virtues were mixed into a satisfying blend that gives an interesting FL.

it is also worth mentioning that the author did not drag the "clueless" phases for so long. Because there is a tendency for most FLs to just sit for 10-20 chapters waiting for a solution that is literally in front of their eyes.

On the other hand, Lesche might seem like the ordinary male lead but he easily climbs up my list of favorite manhwa husbands. Probably in third place (after Erden from My Husband Hides His Beauty and Ditrian from A Way to Protect The Lovable You). It is evident right from the get-go that he doesnt want a divorce! And he wont look at the sh*tty saintess ever!

the dialogue that the leads share and the subtle romantic gestures in between the adventure/action scenes give me life. Instead of forgetting the minor scenes, I ended up remembering them all because of these little scenes sprinkled like confetti.

tr*shta = lina. I do understand that there's an adjustment period needed because she is from earth. But ghurl, at least have common sense. Imagine dressing up and having someone walk into your room? Shes just plain dumb and frustrating on a level comparable to Rashta from Remarried Empress.

Kallis, surprisingly, is better than his brother in the cheater club, Soveshit, at least for me. I could tell that he did love Seria but developed feelings for Lina at the same time. There is the "guardian" excuse he had, unlike sovesh*t who just picked up tr*sh on the street at random. He is still a scumbag, but I did feel pity for him at some point because Leech (Lina) played him too well.

Overall, this easily tops my favorite korean novel as it is fast-paced and well-written, paying attention not just to world-building but also to character development. I hope that the following chapters do not disappoint. <<less

tldr; MAKING YOUR VILLAINS “GYPSIES” IS SUPER RACIST, please don’t do it because those are real people

The Romani culture actually exists and has been treated like crap in the real world for forever. So why do we see them in a fantasy novel being called “abominations? (Chapter 112)

The author is a Korean person who is putting cartoon-style Western-influenced fantasy villains in her work. Does this mean she is racist? Don’t know, doesn’t matter really, because what’s important is for you, fantasy reader, to notice that there’s a real racist trope that is invisible to even Westerners. Imagine using any group of persecuted people (example: Romani were targets of Inquisitions and the Holocaust) in the same way. Or any group of people, like... if they were EVIL BOSTONIANS. At best... more>> it’s goofy, at worst it’s racist.

What you do with this knowledge is up to you. There are a lot of cool world-building things the author is trying to do here, and it’s a shame to see that alongside a real-world racial slur & prejudice, especially when it’s probably not even really the author’s fault—it’s built in to the genre. <<less

This is such a good read, it was worth it to binge read this until the wee hours of the morning.

The first chapters were full of angst, and you will feel the pain together with the MC to the point that you want to go inside the book and slap the 2nd ML and the OG FL's faces. The love story and the angsty romance kinda reminds me of the Remarried Empress. They have the same annoying side chick character and s*upid 2nd ML.

The ML is by far, my favorite... more>> ML. That guy's name is imo, weird (his last name is Berg and he rules the snowy northern dukedom--ice berg???hahaha!). Despite his weird name, he's a walking and breathing green flag. He sets the bar so high.

The FL is strong in terms of intellect and personality. Her reactions and emotions are well written and on-point. She's no pushover, and is willing to use her villainess persona if needed. Her family set-up kinda reminds me of The Death is the Only Ending for the Villainess.

Overall, this story is superb and is a rare great read. The translations are great and the side stories are almost complete! <<less

Honestly, I don't understand all the good reviews.

The writing can be described as nonsensical at best. The whole premise is that if the wedding is not done on time, the groom and bride will die. Quite a weird premise but if there was a good reason, it could be overlooked. However, it is not only not explained, the reason is because she is a Stern.

Also, the whole there is a demon tomb and it needs to be sealed by a stern with a silver branch is also s*upid. I dont... more>> understand the premise of the armour that changes temperature unless touched by a stern. I also dont understand why the wedding has to be done near the glaciar.

Also, since the story starts after a whole year after the FL is transmigrated, she already knows all the characters, and their importance on the story. This normally wouldnt bother me but as the story progresses the characters and the premises are introduced in an infodump manner, which makes the story seem to go on a tangent every time something is introduced.

Also, the OGFL is horrible, as Ive never seen someone as s*upid as her, like her IQ is comparable to that of a rock.

In conclusion, thanks but no thanks. #DNF <<less

I read this despite the very contradictory reviews and now understand why.

This novel is good but sometimes a bit confusing (idk if it's the translation or just the authors writing). The MC is a relatively understanding character but sometimes goes overboard in letting others walk over her in fear of the OG plot. I get why that irks people.

Yet seria is also a very quick witted FL compared to a lot of others of the same genre & the ML is worlds better than most. Though I do wish... more>> Lina was a bit more dimensional and not just another " pick me" girl that feels herself to be completely flawless. Adding onto the antagonists characters I cant help feeling sad for the og seria since her family disgusts me to my core but I guess that's the usual for these types of stories.

Overall it's a good read to pass the time. <<less

The good part is a not too bad plot, albeit seriously diluted there’s a bit more to the MC past life

the universe is a bit interesting in the aspect that there’s nno war because there’s a common enemy, that’s a bit cynical, but the political situation is rather light

the not so great

... more>> in a not to easy translation (many thanks anyway :) - it’s hard to follow in a few places (the beginning in particular)

-theres’s also a few rather tiresome same old : both characters (MC and ML) were abused as kids (again, and it brings nothing more than lengthy petty vengeance episodes : you feel bad forthem, and gruesome vengeance certainly didn’t make me feel better

- idislike the very common choice of societal hierarchy (an empire again, servants and their masters, even lightly, s*aves, do we need the nostalgia of these type of era ?) - that’s a pretty general comment, let’s say I read too much if it ?Now more specifically, and again, it’s not just that title, it’s more akin to an op setting : in these society were unfairness is a very strong rule, you’re again, in one of these many titles where the main protagonists have a special status that put them above ore aside the system. The empire is a bit more than a background - Both the MC and ML can -again - just simply do as they please, act absolutely willfully with not much respect and next too constraints of any kind -Basically, thre should be constraint, but neither of them have them would it be toward the church or the emperor, or ever so lightly-

The bad : not only you won’t find any reflection or struggle about this unfair system, there’s even worst there’s some kind of latent selfishness which is the underlying value of the the protagonists : I do what I want because I can can can ? It’s a very common occurrence in blackbelly chinese novels - maybe, it’s the kind of dream our own society feed with that handful of super rich who take the world as their playground : but should we make a model out of it ?

back to the not so great : the very ban*l tiresome representation of the couple intimacy : yet again another acetic man who tirns into a s€x machine as soon as the scenario allow (in the real world, never ending hard on will painfully bring the guy to a hospital, despite the embarrassment) , so the you have it - again - the s’mi reluctant female and the insatiable beast who needs to mastubate on her feet because he’s been deprived for two weeks - 11 of wich he could not even sleep in fear for her life : duh ?
the bad ? (yes I already started) - there’s two things : lets start with the indecision of the writer intimacy started with very nice inuendo, hot encounters blured by ellipses which left the translator wondering : did they, or did they not - and that was fine !
as the story goes you have badvexplicit episodes that goes fom dull and uninspired to borderline gruesome : honestly do I need to see the stoic hero rubbing one on a girl’s feet ? The answer is definitely no! : is he a dog ? Won’t he be satisfied withe her shoes? (like a dog) is what I thought... it’s again a vastly common problem in comics/novel : why did it come to be « p*rnified » ?
this story typically has no need for explicit, the writer has no imagination and obviously no talent for that, it breaks the pace with lengthy underpants reflections and awkward trusting episodes (do you like it? I’m good right ? Kind of talk : yikes !) If need be, the writer was ok with light stuff, but there nver was a need for repeatition of regular intimacy, it’s too irrelevant - it’s just a gimmick that breaks the story flaw while adding nothing to the relationship : you want to read hot, go for Lucia, hot is truly part of the story, and it’s well written !
worse : the ML wonder why she accepted his bed (accept interc**rse) ... and so do we ! Instead of having her being seduced, in love, or burning with desire, it makes no sense - she doesn’t even go with the flçw, she start it, ut why ? It takes several chapters later for her to realize or to be pointed to the fact she likes him : so what was it ? A sense of duty ? Is she a plastic doll ? It’s not only self deprecating, it’s also very mean and rude to her sincere partner !

and on that we can go on, the over abused and self abused MC seems like a level headed character in the but also appears to be disturbingly out of empathy, it goes from her lack of involvement in her own relationship to the ML, to some wierd episodes where torture is described in a way too mundane way (, what’s wrong with that authors ? Seriously !) So she leaves in her brain - she is not a villain, she’s not a bad person, but she doesn’t feel like a mentally sane person either - at best you’d wonder if she’s not autistic most of the time

the ML, is also rather two dimensional, but grows some very restricted heart (serve and obey the girl you obsess about in a two person universe ‘plus servants)), he’s certainly struggling a lot to get along with his psycho wife. - from the firt part of the description, I réalise he’s not exactly sane either (one of the « dere » family member maybe ?)

In fact the others are not much better. The servants and knights are mostly fine, but the families, ex fiancé, and the saint, are all more also less screwed up - isn’t that quite problematic ? The most charming and relatable characters are far on the side, far from the high and mighty, far from the deep traumas and awkward powers... we don’t see enough of them nd it’s also a pity that there only here to tidy, wash, and open doors !

so in the end, it’s feels a bit uncomfortable to read, it’s light but there’s quite a few awkward or irksome bits, despite that I really wanted to see what happened to the green manors, then how the relationship would turn (i really nearly dropped more than once, but got lazy to find something better to read) ... now, I’m certainly curious about the past of the MC, but it has suite a few chances of not being too great. Honestly there’s a lot of better options in every directions <<less

I liked the premise of the plot but sometimes I feel that the story has a lot of plot holes. It felt confusing for me to understand how the divine power works (like how it is different from a priest to a stern to a saintess and to a noble from the 17 prestige families), the stern wedding, like how was Lesche able to get the preparations for the groom in a few minutes while it took days or months for Callis? I mean if they can have the ritual... more>> of the groom on the same day of the wedding, then why prepare it days before the wedding ceremony ? It would give the security of safely conducting the wedding without casualties you know. Also, the translation was good but sometimes, only sometimes, I feel lost when the scene began to change. I guessed the translator forgot to put the symbol between two paragraphs to indicate that the scene has changed. It took me several re-readings through the chapter for me to understand that it is a different scene. I always get confused when I can't make a connection of the previous paragraph to the next. And also sometimes, I got confused of whose character was talking a specific line. An indicator would help that the character was speaking that line. Also the inconsistency of some descriptions (I guessed it's typo, but it's too many in a single paragraph) made me confused. Like when the author was describing a red diamond then on the next paragraph it became blue, so I've thought there were two diamonds but it was talking to only one jewelry after all and it was red. I hope that the translator could fix these. Overall it was a good read. <<less

I thought this would be sh*t but it's good. That said, I still have no idea what the MCs magic is supposed to do or why she needs to hang around some glacier. Also there hasn't been much revenge 90 chapters in. The MC isn't afraid to be rude to people, she's not some saint like you see in many other "villainous" stories, which is always nice. The ML is an actual good person in this, with no r*pey vibes or random mu*der sprees, which is refreshing. Pretty standard story... more>> where the OG FL is actually a prick but it's really good for what it is. <<less

I just want to say that I really have no talent or more like patience reading a poorly translated book. I am a reader that has keen attention to details and I hardly ever skip or skim a chapter or even a paragraph. So reading the translation from RainofSnow something? Was a hurdle for me. I am interested of the story but I can't really understand what's going on. What baffles me was how are you people have no problem comprehending what's going on with the story?

I was so fascinated... more>> by this kind of talent a lot of you have. I'm not one for envying someone's talent because I know I'm talented in various different areas too. But this is the only time I felt amaze by how you can understand a story from those jumble of words. I can understand MTL because those were direct translation from the original work so I can make inferences and conclusions from weird prose and phrases from my past vocabulary knowledge of the similar books in the same genre. Despite the wrong pronouns and mistranslation of words like places, designation and phenomenon, I can still go over that pretty easily. But reading a translation with proper sentence and pronouns and in a correct grammar but was just translated in a weird way was hard for me. I'll get lost funnily, like I will wonder where they are, then I'll be confuse because I thought she was talking to this guy but it's apparently a different guy then there's another person in the area, then I'll wonder what they mean by those conversations, are they arguing? Was she being sarcastic? Or she's acquainting with him? Are they in agreement? What are her emotions? Is she happy from those sentence she just said? But it looks like they're arguing from the reply of that someone? So she's not happy? Then how come she utter those word? Then they're greeting each other. Then I'll guess that maybe she's civil with him then next conversations they were arguing? Kind of? She'll leave somewhat dissatisfied. I'll question myself if I'm reading this right and then the scene cut off. Do this again and again, then you'll leave me here with my mouth open and my mind confuse.

So it's really amazing how you all can guess right what's the story is about. I can't go on with this book but maybe if the translation was a little bit better, I'll be back. <<less

This was a fun read for the most part. FL was pretty smart and not overly reliant on others, including the ML. The 'OGFL' was only equipped with 2 brain cells that obviously took turns, with both of them going on vacation at times.

Spoiler

I initially thought that she was transmigrated into the book with the awareness of a protagonist, but no, she was just dumb, like dumb dumb.

She seriously thought that it was not only ok for her to almost kill the FL by stealing her husband, but that it was feasible for her to become such good friends with FL, that she gifts her (Lina) jewelry that the ML gave to her (Seria). I mean, the lion on the witch and the audacity of that b*tch.

[collapse]

The writing is also confusing at times. I think this must have been an issue by the author rather than a translation problem. The action scenes especially, they were just full of inconsistencies and confusion, and you had no idea what was happening half the time with no idea where anybody was at a given point.

Spoiler

Up till this point (end of story) I can't, for the life of me, tell you what it was a Stern did exactly. The only thing I know is that they're like heating lamps? But then, how does that apply to the other Stern (s) ? Who did not like going to the North? Who did they have to keep warm then, and what did they have to do instead. And what the hell did Stern do when they were inspecting the icebergs? I honestly cannot say at all

[collapse]

But still, a pretty ok read <<less

This was a chore to finish. The writing was all over the place, skips from scene to scene without warning. There was virtually no introduction to the world, no explanation of why, where, how & consequences.. Why are there demons, why did they take orders from x, where did the "guardians" come from, why the glacier, no one knows. It screams "I'm making this up as I write." I guess the author did try to add intrigue.. And they succeeded to /some/ extent. Anyway by end of it none of... more>> the characters moved me. The story was good. I don't know if there was an issue in translation or there were just come confusing time shifts and plot holes every now and then, but sometimes it did affect me in properly digesting what I was reading.

One of the main reasons I stayed is because of the sarcasm and humor aspect of the novel, there are just funny moments and beloved, funny characters and there are also some dark humor. The world building was constant throughout the story. The summary shows only the tip of... more>> the iceberg, there's a deeper story that unfolds in a roundabout way, so while the plot and characters may look one dimensional and overused at first glance, there were character developments for most of them and there is another plot layer that is eventually revealed (which could have been done better IMO).

This is not one of my best reads, but for someone who has google translated original manhwas, this is refreshing break from the usual canon fodder of Chinese authors. <<less

The story moves very very fast so much that

  • There is little or no character introduction.
  • No background about world common sense like if you do X, Y (like dying) would happen to you or someone
The story might be good but the way its written is sadly very bad 😔

I absolutely loved! The translation is one in a million. Absolutely perfect!

I like the plot, the whole Stern thing and world building was interesting. The stakes were high enough and the novel doesn't revolve around the characters (especially the FL) needlessly suffering endlessly which I personally can't stand. They have very happy, light and fluffy moments and that's great!

The FL is great! For all the times I screamed at a FL for them to dump someone and never looked back Seria listened to all my wishes. She's strong, smart and... more>> knows her worth. I really liked her. Seria and her knight Abigail were my favorites.

The ML Lesche is also very good. He's a cool dude, very lovely and very protective (but not overly). It's nice to see that they trust each other. By this I mean they both make their own choices and they might talk about it but there's no one trying to control the other choosing what's the best in their eyes regardless of what their partner might want.

For me, the little things makes it one of my favorite novels. I liked the mini redemption the villain had. I like their lovey dovey conversations, the supporting cast, their past etc etc

It's definitely in my list to re-read <<less

Normally you see villainess in the title and the story is formulaic: someone gets isekaid and learns that their character has the role of the villain and then does everything to avoid their ending.

The story is much richer. It has interesting non one dimensional characters. The FL has a personality and stands her ground.

The translation also contributed in making this an engaging read.

My rating is 3/5, I might have accidentally tapped the wrong star.

I don't understand why it's rated so highly.

It's not very interesting. I think I was just expecting more because the comments made this sound like pain galore but it's not that angsty and it doesn't have a madly fascinating plot. The main character is already adjusted to life in the book and so the whole "ahhh I need to stop myself from dying because I'm a villainess" plot has already been averted. It's already happened. Now, I don't actually... more>> know what's motivating the main character.

We watch her stumble through life and inch towards the male lead's heart. The plot moves so slowly. More than 50 chapters in and there's only been like 2 interesting events.

The characters do have good chemistry, though. I like the interactions between the male leads, it comes across as very genuine, but that's the only thing I'll say is particularly good about this story.

I think it's ridiculously overrated. <<less

The translation quality varies. For most of the story, it's good enough to get the gist across. But a lot of times there seem to be strange jumps in the story where it's almost like there are lines missing, or MTL.

The TL will sometimes add clarification to their chapters to explain what is happening, which suggests to me that the content makes sense in Korean but is missing its full meaning in English.

Some of the worldbuilding seems to be difficult to understand because of this. You have to fill in... more>> a lot of blanks yourself. It's hard to tell if this is author error or translation error but it may be the basis for some of the more confused reviews left here.

Other than that, the story is decent. It's a bit of a stock formula with your second chance MC (Seria), alpha ML who only melts for MC (Lesche), s*upid second ML (Kalis), and the devolving former FL (Lina). Lina is a caricature instead of a character, which IMO detracts a bit from the setting. It's not a deep or complex story.

The divine power in the setting is what gives the story some flavor, but again, some of the details seem to be lost in translation or perhaps were never laid down properly by the original author.

Worth a read if you like reborn/book transmigrated stories. <<less
