A Saint Who Was Adopted by the Grand Duke

I was forced to live in captivity for the rest of my life because I happened to be aware of the fact that I was a saint. I was truly a ‘real’ saint, but that didn’t matter, because there was already a designated saint in the temple.

When I died from all the abuse I endured, I was sent back to a time before all those previous events in my life had happened. After 15 regressions, I was exhausted. I prayed, “I don’t want anything to do with this, so please just let me die,”

And at that moment when I could finally be able to die, someone said, “How about being my daughter?”

…. That monstrous duke had adopted me.

So far, this seems like the typical mistreated MC gets adopted by an indifferent duke EXCEPT!! He actually shows the traits of a concerned father to his other children. Prior to meeting the MC, we see him deeply contemplating how to improve the mental health and lives of his twin boys. This alone sets this story apart since he’s not just a person who will neglect everything except the MC. I have high hopes

I love this! The MC breaks my heart. As told in the summary, she dies 14 times, and she is just done with life.

I love that the Duke it not the stereotypical cold man. I mean, he does kill in a heart beat, but he actually has feelings guys!!

For the translation I give it an 8/10. The previous review made it seem so awful I was really nervous to read it in case it was imposible to read, but it's not? It's not perfect I admit. There are part where... more>> I just said "what?" out loud, but it's Wattpad, most of the time there will be a comment of Translator-nim explaining or somebody that didn't get it and then gets explained. And if you think about it a little it makes sense!

I personally don't like to complain about the translation most of the time. It's a pain in the behind to translate Korean, I've tried and for me, it took about 5-6 hrs to translate just one chapter. I was using more than 5 translation pages just to try and piece one sentence together and/or trying to figure out a slang or korean saying. So I appreciate it!! Bottom line, if you read up to here, please give it try, I believe you will not regret it! <<less

I read this novel to the very end, and I must say, it's definitely one of my top novels. The characters aren't too juvenile, and the female lead is just the right amount of weak and strong. She's the saintess of the generation, and she has the most holy power, but she is very pessimistic of life because of her past lives. Most novels where the female lead is pessimistic drag out the frustrating sections to the point where you want to shake the female lead and tell her to... more>> get a grip on herself because she has a new life now, but the female lead grows emotionally at a reasonable rate in this novel. Also, I like how she's not just a princess waiting to be saved, but kind of the other way around!

There is a section in the middle where it gets too long for my taste, but I see why the author wrote it. Also, omg, the other cover is to die for! It's so cute I can't even. <<less

The more I read, the more I'm getting pissed off by author's blatant way of prolonging the story with unnecessary filler.

For example, MC was supposed to tell her father something but nooOOOO— you can't do that in ONE chapter; let's prolong it so it will take TEN chapters.

A doting family/father who has tendencies to be protectice (maybe yandere) with no common sense ? hell yeah count me in :D

Its only 3 chapters but you allready hate so much people (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻... poor Daina. How painful must it be to relife a cruel life not only once but 14 times. I hope we will get a decent ML for her. Looking forward for the fluffy actions between the FL and her future family. May the shitty people rot in Hell. (ง'̀-'́) ง

It's Ame, the translator ^^ I'm so happy that this now has a manhwa and special stories. This is one of the novels that got me into knovels and manhwas (way back in 2020), so this really holds a special place in my heart and I hope my translation showed just how much I adore Esther and her family and friends.

The mix between family, revenge and (kids) romance is just right in my opinion. It’s cliché, but it’s the good kind! The writing is a bit simple, but isn’t there... more>> beauty in simplicity? ٩ (◕‿◕) ۶

From what I gathered in the comments, most readers instantly love Esther, Deheen and the twins. But showed some hesitance towards Noah. Understandable, after all, our baby Esther deserves the world! So...

I want to take a moment to talk about the male lead, Noah. He seemed a little not suitable for Esther initially as it felt as if he was a baby chick imprinting onto the first person who showed him attention (fair enough, he has been sick/in a coma for a long time till Esther healed him). But he has amazing growth - he went from wanting to die to having ambition for the throne, all because he is inspired by Esther having something she wants and is reaching for and because he wants to become someone who can support her. I quite like how he is a "weak to strong" male lead, which isn't something we see often (I think in most of my other projects, the male leads are "strong from the start" or "strong to stronger" hahaha)

Spoiler

There are some parts I wished could be rearranged: the meeting the goddess, the explanation on why so many lives (TLDR: goddess cannot directly intervene in the human world and she became weaker after the years of contamination of the crystal ball). But it's a minor point in the grand scheme of things? Since the main plot is always about family and revenge on the temple.

Tbh, the part about Noah seeing Esther's past lives in his dreams while he was sick in the sanctuary is still unexplained even though it was addressed. Or perhaps, it was meant to always stay as a question... the fantasy aspect...

[collapse]

There are many side stories and even special stories, so this novel is as complete as one can get, to which I'm extremely grateful and delighted <3 I hope y'all have enjoyed the growth and life of Esther as much as I did! <<less

Ahh the prologue is really upsetting and you (as the reader) will just want to shank the wretched pieces of sh— in the temple for the horrible child abuse.

Based on the little snippet at the beginning, however, it seems her future guardian (the grand duke) will properly treasure her as they (the supposedly frigid/scary men) tend to in these age regression novels. That's good. I really do like that trope a lot so I'm really looking forward to that.

The translation is done nicely. I'll return with updates when there are... more>> more chapters. <<less

Novel not recommended to read.

MC is a sad abused girl who wants to commit su*cide due to her terrible 14 lifetimes.

She is adopted by the Duke who is kind, and then things swiftly spiral out of control.

The novel basically becomes a tr*shy mess after author has MC become the ultimate saint by adding:

Spoiler

A mysterious cursed handsome prince who knows everything about MC.

The former saintess easily discovers evil R woman is behind everything and meets MC.

Both of Mc’s brothers discovering Mc’s Saintness and telling no one.

MC healing people, getting a venomous snake, and sneaking out.

[collapse]

She swiftly is no longer fearful, has a super crush on handsome prince, and starts lobbing diamonds all around. It’s not heartwarming but instead absolutely ridiculous. There’s very little reason to read on even if you include the Mc’s eventual revenge or possible romance. There’s far too little to the story along with even more ridiculous world situation. Mc’s adoptive father is also a useless waste in noticing nothing about the MC and the earlier foreshadowing about evil doctor and investigation of Mc’s origins are going nowhere. MC doesn’t do cute stuff either so really, there’s no value here.

-900Quintillion/10 Mediocre and lacking in every way. <<less

This is really good. I'm normally strict when I write reviews about novels like these, but this novel just captured my heart. There was no flaw with every character there. The Grand Duke was a great father, he's not the cliche kind of Dad that ignores everyone including his own kids except for the MC. He's the kind of Dad that's actually a great Father. He shows concerns for his own children and even tries to think of ways to make up for their mother's absence and his absence for... more>> always being busy. He's not unnecessarily crazy, he's very just and rational. The brothers are very practical and normal too. They don't like the MC immediately just cuz of something she does, they are actual big brothers! First they asked for a little sister, then they got one. But Judy didn't like her immediately, he even forgot about his promise and stuff. Eventually, like all kids, Judy falls in love with his little sister bit by bit. He felt the need to 'protect' her, (like an older brother which is very cute) when Esther shyly called him 'brother'. There's also Dennis, that's a little taller than Judy, that isn't unnecessesarily 'smart but cold-hearted', he's very cute lol. The trio (dad and twin brothers) are very cute. MC isn't s*upid too, she's very quiet and also very tired, but she seems very happy in this life. She isn't unnecessesarily praised for being so adorable and smart like other mcs, she is treated very normally but with a bit more special care since she's adopted and very thin. She's a normal child for her age! I have a very hard time explaining, but you just can't help but love this novel. The temple is really annoying and hateful though. Seriously. At this point, I wish she could use her powers freely in the care of her family and not the temple. The prologue could also give you the 'cant help but love her family' feeling. That's right! She's not a Saint for the temple but his daughter and their little sister!! It's her choice and freedom to do what she wants!! The duke never adopted her just cuz she's a saint but because he likes her!! Shoo away temple!!

Anyways the characters and their reactions and interactions are so realistic that I fell in love with this book. You should read it, tbh. I hate the temple tho. MC deserves to be happy!!! <<less

The beginning was okay for a rofan childcare, even if too simplistic. But when the whole revenge part came around, it became obvious that the writing is too immature and there is no attention to important detail on the political part. This story would have been better if it just stayed as a healing found family book with personal revenge against the villainess. But the more the book went on, the more I felt like MC, ML, MC's family are the real tr*sh here and actually started to sympathise with... more>> the temple on certain points.

The biggest issue for me is the hypocrisy by FL and all her simps. The narrative makes her look like a kind and saintly girl... but when we look at her actions, she and those surrounding her are just as selfish as the temple she judges.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Earliest examples are in the first half of the book. There is a terrible drought because the current saintess is dying and MC hasn't come forward with her power, while the villainess Ravienne (I've seen at least 5 spellings for her name, so let's call the villainess 'R') is a fake. FL judges the temple and the empire for being corrupt and not helping with the drought... but she literally does nothing either, despite having the power to. She doesn't even considering helping while hiding her identity or using her super op family.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Similarly, it's common knowledge that the temple is mainly revered for maintaining the barrier against monsters. Without a true saint being active for a couple of years, monsters start appearing. At this point, FL herself thinks that she knows her true station and power by now. So, you'd think it would be a great time to come forward and help all those people whom the temple failed? The ones she supposedly cares about?

Haha lol nope! Why bother when she can just blush at ML and go to a party instead! Or mine some diamonds! She can just curse the temple in her head and go on with her happy days!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Even when an epidemic spreads, FL doesn't give a rat's arse and only heals the people on her dad's duchy's territory. She even consciously thinks that it's fine to let it spread - because that would make the temple crumble more.

She literally thinks that her own happy and peaceful life is more important than anything else to her. And never gets punished for it.

So, ultimately, what's the difference between the villainess R and the temple who want to let the epidemic spread to regain more control vs FL and her family who want to let the epidemic spread to gain the power to collapse the temple? Why am I supposed to cheer about this kind of tr*sh FL and her simps?

Btw FL's brothers, father, and ML are no better. They are happy to conceal that she's the real saintess no matter how many people keep dying to monsters/disease on their territory because who cares when they can just blame the temple again and lovingly gaze at FL's lovely smile?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Another big hypocrisy is about temple donations and poverty. Basically, all nobility just dumps all charity work on the temple and absolutely NEVER check on how that's going nor do they do extra charity on their own. I kid you not, FL's brothers (who are supposed to inherit the dukedom!) only see poor people for the first time in their lives when they are at least 17! FL's dad apparently finds out about the temple embezzling his donations for the poor literally YEARS after it's been happening. Because for all these YEARS her was never arsed enough to go and check even once whether poor people actually received the donations!

The emperor ultimately goes against the 'rotten' temple not because his people are suffering, but because his beloved child ML was hurt and because he got the promise that the real saint would stand on their side.

FL mostly revealed her status as saintess because it was helpful for her revenge and only after multiple catastrophes have happened that she did nothing about, and only because she could no longer conceal it.

One of the priests was fine with poverty relief funds being embezzled for decades until his beloved saint was killed, and suddenly he is a lover of justice.

I could go on, but really, none of these people ever really seem to care about the people, they just care about their own interests. I would be fine if the author gave us a story about a morally grey or evil FL who lives for revenge, but nope. This is supposed to be a story where FL and her allies are supposedly 'good'... but the just come across as disgusting self-serving hypocrites if you switch on your brain.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Other moments that are really s*upid and/or repulsive:

- FL keeps carrying literal diamonds throughout the story as her money and paying with them (or handing them out). Like gurl pls where are your braincells, why can't you just carry a few diamonds and convert some of them into money???

- ML, emperor, FL's fam closed temples first without even making plans on what to do with the people working there, or where divine power holders are supposed to learn to control their powers, or where faithful and poor people are supposed to go. I kid you not, they literally only started discussing what to do AFTER they basically declared war on temples.

- They discuss how public opinion is important, but again, they only bother to spread rumours about the temple AFTER it's already been closed for a while. There was no preparatory work at all.

- Actually, there is no social networking. FL never really has a friend and no one even tries to arrange a play date for her to get to know someone outside of her brothers' circle or ML.

- No one makes any plans for incredibly important decisions. All characters just wing it like a potential war is the same as winging a mid-term test at middle school.

- Ofc almost all male characters get redemption and the main antagonist is female. You can see whether a person will be good or bad by checking whether they find MC lovely and cute at first sight. If yes, it's a good guy. If they dislike the MC, oh horror, it's a villain!

- Romance is lackluster and ML is pretty generic. He also leaves FL for a year with not a single letter and she's resentful... until she sees him, and then she doesn't even get a proper apology or remorse because he teases her whether she was waiting for him. Overall, the romance is not horrible, but it feels meh and unearned because FL falls for ML at first sight, and ML could see FL in his dreams all this time, so he is already crazy in love by the time they meet in the beginning. They don't have good romantic scenes either. And whenever they have a scene, it's often interrupted by FL's brothers or dad.

- FL and her simps do nothing about s*avery. Also, they basically hand over all the power in the country to the imperial family and we know there is absolutely no way this could go wrong in the future /s.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, the writing and narrative and incredibly childish and simplistic, which would be fine for a light-hearted rofan childcare with a focus on healing. But as the second half of the story is concentrated around politics, the lack of planning and hypocritical personalities of the supposedly 'good' characters make them even more repulsive than villains and distract from the fluff.

A good example would be a sequence of events from the story: in a chapter, one half is dedicated to the epidemic and people dying because the real saintess aka MC is living her peaceful happy life, and then in the next half we see FL discussing how she wants the biggest cake ever for her birthday party. <<less

This is one of the most enjoyable stories I have read. Characters, plot, setting all excellent. There is a reason why you look down the reviews and you can’t find a negative one.

This is a drama and if you don’t enjoy these types of stories then that is fine but I can’t fathom how anyone could give this a 1 or 2 star rating if you base it off of the writing and translation.

Edit: updated this comment for more relevant information

It's really good, but I for some god awful reason the non-official translations keep getting reported. Its really goddamn annoying, bcs this story is an absolute masterpiece.

The last group who did it tried to keep it on the downlow by using a separate app to publish their translation, but I guess that someone outed them. Which sucks bcs the other stories they were translating were also pretty good.

Not bad, not so good either.
The writing was pretty balanced, but maybe too balanced that it didn't really make me satisfied. The flow got a bit slow but the fluffy moments were there, so I don't want to complain much. The FL suffering was quite on the point in the beginning but was not enough in the rest of the novel. Her family and powers built too much of a shield around that the excitement wasn't really there but you'll be waiting for the villaness suffering so it's WORTH... more>> THE READ.

Oh, I have complaints about that too. Normally in other novels, especially when a saint is the MC, it's mostly like: "Let's deal with the s*ave system, that's not fair suffering." But in this novel: "Let's keep it and not think about it at all so we can sell the villainess to some cruel master. "... That was a bit tasteless for me.

Don't mind my nitpicking. The family relationship was a very nice experience. But if you're looking for romance I feel like this wouldn't satisfy you because FL's family is a JERK to ML. I feel like Noah needed a BIG thanks from Deheen instead of mean looks. He loves your daughter enough to sacrifice himself and that’s your reaction???? I was pissed.

I must add that side stories made me even more angry about that topic. Her family kept bullying ML without any decent reasoning. She is 18 ofc she'll have a boyfriend. On top of that, he is the Crown Prince Noah you know. Not an untrustworthy stranger. UGH. They touched my nerves. They were being too much.

+Thanks Ame for the interactions! I had my fun in the comments section <3 <<less

Highly recommended. I've read several stories with similar plots, and if you are interested in this type, then give it a try. In this genre, I would place it within my top 5. The MC is a well-rounded character. She's not OP, she struggles with her traumas in a relatable way. You feel like you are growing with her. I would say that if anyone is giving a low rating, then they most likely are not familiar with this genre for comparison or this type of story isn't their preference.

I... more>> did not give it a 5 star simply because there were some areas of the story that dragged a bit, but it is still very good overall. <<less

I'm very sad that the translation was taken down, I thought it was very good quality. I don't know about the new tl quality as I haven't read it yet, but the plot is very sweet. The MC does not get overpraised or doted on immediately. The characters feel like they aren't horribly blown up either. A lot of authors tend to exaggerate emotions so that readers understand and pick up on them, but this one didn't have that problem. I loved it!

It's so cute and heartwarming. The family dynamic is the sweetest I've seen among novels like this (Baby Raising a Devil, Becoming the Villain's Family being some of my favs). The dad is such a doting fool for his kids and the kids are all cute af in their own ways.

Our FL is a goddamn legend. Love her. Let's see more healing and revenge please.

If you're a sucker for found family tropes like me and enjoy getting your heart broken and built over and over again, then this one's for you.

Seriously, I had to pause reading so many times because I was tearing up and it was difficult to breathe. Our MC has been through so much pain, and seeing her with her new family and experiencing the more beautiful things in life while also dealing with her trauma was just too much for my poor heart to handle. I adore this family. And... more>> I love how the Duke actually cares for his children and actively tries to be a good father to them. 10/10 parenting right here.
