Fortunate Wife

Description

Goddess Ravine Village is an old and infertile place. It’s hard to find a woman to marry here.

The Li family is extremely poor. With only four bare walls for a home, they don’t even have a woman to manage the household.

The Heavens had mercy today, Li family’s oldest son had saved a woman at the market and brought her back home.

Li Man was killed by her mother-in-law and transmigrated. She was almost hanged on the first day, but, fortunately, she was rescued by the Li brothers.

This doesn’t mean that her destiny is over.

The language didn’t make sense at first, she discovered that, here, standard Mandarin sucks.

Spoiler

If you want extreme and mature polygamy, this is not for you. But if you like Wife, you can’t run after eating type of s*x, then, go on.

Female lead

Li Man

She is beautiful, kind, and hard working. But to be honest, she’s the typical perfect girl. Nothing notably special.

Male Leads

Li Mo (Eldest) The v**ginity taker?

He’s the main “master” of the family aside from Li Man whim they follow also. Hard working and dependable.

Li Yan (2nd)

He’s a great craftsman. According to Li man, he’s the most aggressive in bed.

Li Shu (3rd)

He’s good at fishing. He wants to become a General/Hero. The most hot headed one.

Li Hua (4th)

The scholar. Li man wants their children to be like him because he’s calm and smart.

Li Xiao Wu (5th)

the Youngest. His character would turn 180 degrees when he starts to see Li Man as a woman. When his brother have s*x with Li man, they would trick him into saying they’re helping her catch rats in her room?

Real identity of Li Man

Spoiler

This is somewhat smooth sailing, the real Li Man is Shanguang Yu wich is related to the royal family and the Criwn Prince’s fiancée

Warning. This story starts off very slowly. The first 70 chapters is probably only a week or two in the story. I feel that things don't start progressing until chapter 89 - Wolf Attack (which is probably somewhere between translated chapter part 135 to 145). I'm tempted to recommend skipping to that chapter instead of reading from the beginning. The later chapters are much longer, so by word count, you're only losing out on about 10% of the story by skipping to chapter 89 - Wolf Attack.

Pros: What makes Fortunate Wife stand out from other polyandry novels is that her husbands are brothers, and they have a really close relationship with each other. Even when they're feeling jealous of one another, at the end of the day, they still want... more>> their brothers to be happy even if it's at their own costs. They have so little, but they still try their best to care for each other. In other polyandry novels, the MC is like the sun that the other husbands revolve around, and they no connection to each other.

The author takes the time to make each ML very distinct and have a different relationship with each of their brothers. They're not just a generic ML #1, ML #2, etc that you can't tell apart.

It would be more accurate to translate the title to A wife that brings fortune to the family. Translating the title to Fortunate Wife is excluding the last two Chinese character of the title and kind of misleading. Their marriage is a two-sided street. It's not just Li Man that's lucky, her husbands are lucky to have married her to. At first, Li Man is oblivious to how poor the family is, and her actions cause a financial burden on the family. But, eventually, Li Man is the one that significantly improves the lives of the Li family and helps them be their best possible selves.

In contrast to other novels, there aren't any grand, over-the-top romantic gestures. In fact, there's isn't even an onscreen marriage ceremony. When the story begins, Li Man is already their common law wife. The MLs aren't secretly super powerful princes or generals. This is a simple story of sweet, little moments of domestic bliss.

I really like that we get to see Li Man's past and what shaped her to be the way she is. For example, she grew up with cong**ital heart disease, so transmigrating to this new healthy body is such a blessing for her. It's this new life that allows her the freedom to become the best that she can be.

She lacks the emotional maturity that someone her age should have, but it's explained by her parents cocooning her in safety due to her cong**ital heart disease. She goes from being handled with care by her parents to being handed off to a husband that her parents chose for her. She's lived in a glass cage her entire life. Even if mentally, she's in her thirties, her emotional development has stagnated until her transmigration. I like that Li Man gradually gains confidence in herself and becomes more assertive in her relationship with her husbands and other characters. Her original shy self is probably because she got married young and her modern-day husband and mother-in-law destroyed her self-esteem before killing her.

Cons: Vague spoiler to manage expectations. There's going to be points in the story where you think there's finally going to be a plot, but it always gets resolved quickly before the situation develops further, and the story returns to slice-of-life. Slice-of-life stories can be interesting in their own way, but I felt that this one eventually becomes too mundane. I binge read this novel in one day, and maybe it would have been more enjoyable to read it in small doses over a longer period of time?

Li Man is very easily flustered, super conflict avoiding, and acts more like a preteen than an adult, but as the story progresses, she gets much better at acting her age. I also felt annoyed by how wasteful she is with Li family's money when she can see for herself how poor the family is. This eventually resolves itself when she starts earning money for the family. Even by the end of the story, she still a spendthrift that no financial sense, but I guess it's okay since the family can afford this now.

P.S. My favorite brother is Li Mo. I find Li Yan's actions disturbing given the power imbalance between them.

One of my favorite moments in the story.

Spoiler

Much later on in the novel, one of Li brothers' aunts are introduced and she seems to hate Li Man for no reason. But, there's a twist. The Li brothers' mother was this beautiful woman that was very spoiled by her husbands and shortly after giving birth to Little Five, she s*upidly threw a tantrum and ran off into cold weather because she was unhappy over something. Her husbands chased after her, and the parents all end up dying in the snow and leaving their children orphans.

So, one, the aunt is worried that history is going to repeat itself. Her nephews married a beautiful woman that seemingly has no good qualities other than her looks. And two, she's hurt that's she made huge sacrifices to keep the Li brother's alive when they were children, and they're siding with this outsider woman over her. I really like that the author gave good reasons for her actions instead of having her treat Li Man hostilely for no reason.

So I'm a huge fan of hardworking MCs and farming/slice-of-life novels, but after 60 chapters, literally none of that has happened. The first 50 chapters have described about 3 days of the MC's new life.

The MC gets up intending to do work? Immediately interrupted by so-called troublesome neighbor's wife who is apparently irrationally jealous of her after seeing her for THE SECOND TIME with ZERO interactions and then accuses her of being a prostitute, yada yada. Absolutely no respect for female characters. The three other female characters who have... more>> shown up also try to scheme the MC despite meeting her for all of 2 minutes.... =___= If women really went around like psychopaths to scheme against all the other female "competition, " including those they've never even had a conversation with, all the women in that village would have killed each other long ago.

Maybe the author wanted to show us that the MC was 10x better than everyone else which is why she deserves 5 husbands while the other women all deserve to die.

Oh did I mention, apparently it's normal to get stoned to death by the villagers for trying to leave the village? And apparently the village elder needs to be called to make a "judgment" because the MC was accused of not being a virg*n. Yeah, that is totally everyone's business, WTF.

Spoiler

Yes, I understand this is ancient China, which means a woman's reputation is like gold. And there were other reasons why the village elder was called in to mediate. But think about it, why would the cannon fodder make a big deal of the MC not being a virg*n IF the villagers wouldn't have punished the MC for it? The entire scene was so laughably ridiculous, the author clearly fabricated it out of nowhere with zero historical basis.

Let's not forget the absolutely giant logic gap of villagers "saving up all their life" to be able to bring home a wife, and then immediately killing said wife if she tries to run away? Uh... so suddenly they're ok with the equivalent of throwing all that money down the drain because things didn't work out once? Even becoming s*ave traders and reselling them would have made more sense. And that's assuming it's logical to have all the villagers basically hunting down and killing their neighbor's wives for fun.

[collapse]

As for the harem part? One guy flirts with her then the others become jealous and start flirting in turn, rinse & repeat. And due to the language barrier/misunderstandings, they spend more time discussing her than talking to her. All of that would have been OK if the author hadn't spent at least 50% of the story to put in completely pointless scheming admirers (each guy has at least one) for no logical reason except to show off how awful they are compared to the MC.

I never thought there'd be a day where Imperial Harem drama seemed reasonable by comparison. <<less

MC is basic bland oath meal. "Nice" character that is hardworking because she just doesn't have any other interests or personality to take up her time. Other male characters frequently show violence towards other woman but she hardly reacts to it. All female characters are shown "ugly' so to make MC look good comparatively. She also is okay with the second brother often hurting her and sexually harassing her. It's shown in the way; it is okay because he likes her and in time she will like it. Bleh.

Basic... more>> stockholm syndrome, girl trapped with no way out, written from a perspective she should be happy that five handsome men that bought her are interested in her. Some reviews even mention that MC doesn't deserve five men being interested in her because she is boring.... it's, like, so wrong. It's the same as saying that female is too ugly for that handsom man to kidnap her, imprison and then r*pe her. Beh. <<less

So far, this seems like a slice-of-life reverse harem story with a unassuming and hard-working heroine. (Update: Wrong, this is a white-lotus, clumsy, low-intelligence MC)

Summary:

Li Man is killed by her mother-in-law and reborn in a poor village, where nobody understands her language. The previous owner of her body was recently bought by the Li Brothers as a wife. Despite her initial panic and language barrier, Li Man eventually settles into village life.

... more>> Review:

At this point, it's too early to know where the story will go. The translation quality is good and the main character is likeable. I have yet to get a solid impression of the brothers so far.

I will update this review after more chapters are released.

Update:

So far, the main character is extremely passive, timid, and ignorant. Despite being married to 5 men, trapped in an unfamiliar body in an unfamiliar land, unable to understand the foreign language, she makes zero effort to learn or investigate her situation.

If you are hoping for a hard-working heroine, you won't find one here. Li Man is the type of pure, clumsy, white-lotus MC who bumbles all her chores, breaks dishes, adopts animals she can't afford to feed, etc.

Even though she's a "modern" adult woman, she has the awareness and intelligence of an elementary schooler and is easily embarrassed around her teenage husband. Not only that, she purposefully avoids people when they want to explain things to her, plays dumb as a way to avoid discussion or conflict, and runs away "embarrassed" at least 3 times per chapter.

It takes her 39 chapters to realize 1 of the 5 men might be her husband. It takes her over 50 chapters for her to decide that it might be a good idea to learn the language. At 80 chapters, she still doesn't realize that she's married to the 4 other men she lives with.

I can't find any redeeming features about her so far (other than instantly being willing to throw away her modern past to play at living a peasant life) and her entire existence is supported by her new husbands. I'm lowering my rating to 3 stars. <<less

Dull white lotus type character MC who behaves like a pre-teen... Running away embarrassed was the most frequent thing she did. Any person with a brain will try to understand the situation but this dullard just killed me with frustration. I see no redeeming qualities in her, I would rather go back to reading about crazy arrogant MCs who like killing everybody around them. How a person like that would even survive till their 30s..

Ohh, I read this one via MTL, it was hm interesting in a way, I'm under the impression that the author kinda favored the scholarly 4th brother the most tho, he had a detailed scene ?.

I can barely remember it now tho, um... each brother has their individual characteristics:

Spoiler

[I favor 3rd and 4th brother the most ?:

3rd brother is really romantic despite his hotheadedness and he's considerate,

4th brother seems calm and elegant at first, but he's actually impulsive but in a hot way lol,

2nd brother I did not like, he's the overbearing sly tricky type with harsh words, I guess a tsundere?

1st brother is too hmm... quiet... but dependable I guess but that almost makes him a wallflower,

5th brother, tbh I can't see him as a candidate... he grew up eventually but I don't recall him getting together with her because it ended before that point... it's mentioned they got together in the extras tho... I think].

I would have to say that the ending was slightly abrupt, I think, and then it went onto extras... It's not like they got super rich or anything which I appreciate that this story doesn't end with them conquering the country or anything, they just settle in their peaceful [somewhat] village and become well off enough to not worry about anything else.

4 stars because well the abrupt ending imo, it felt like there needed some wrapping up but w/e it's not terrible like skipping scenes or w/e. It's not particularly unique but it's not the cliche of 'the world's women are going extinct', it's just the particular village society of where the ML's live that the brother's end up sharing a wife due to their financial circumstances and the promise they made to their mother, tbh I'm not too sure of what happened with the MLs' mother and fathers but it lead to why they were willing to share the MC as their wife.

Overall it's an ok read for those that don't mind polygamy, there are bits about how she tries to balance their feelings, it's not like they immediately all get along with the situation of her being their shared wife automatically even if they did promise their mother... there's some tension and jealousy and such, but with some time she manages to somehow balance it out so it doesn't turn ugly and manages to improve their living circumstances which helps quite a bit.

The novel was decent albeit slow paced for the first 194ish chapters. However, the pacing and development of the plot fell off a cliff once we hit the moment where the author actually tackled with the main issue of the plot - recognition of the marriage and acting on it.

The first 190ish chapters is drawn out because it only spans the first month of the heroine and the family living together, its only from 160? Forward that she realizes she is actually their wife and 40 chapters later she comes... more>> to a decision rather abruptly even though we spent the previous near 200 chapters in ignorance and denial. 200 onwards was just painful to read when we actually get to how the topic of "shared wife" is actually tackled.

If you're like me who hates mindless misunderstandings, I suggest you read up to the point where the fourth brother is introduced. MC and fourth brother communicated with each other through writing. After that it's so dumb I had several eyerolls. So, after you read that part I mentioned, directly jump on to chapter 136. It will not be confusing because nothing much really happened in the previous chapters and there will be some context clues to guide you.

MC is dumb in a way that she knew early on that... more>> they can communicate through writing, but she did not clarify her relationship with the five brothers. She endured having to go through the days not knowing that she was their wife and mindlessly assuming things. It's frustrating because it could have been resolved in a few chapters, but because she's dumb like that, she settles for ambiguous and vague answers.

I'm gonna drop this novel though. I don't like how one of the MLs kept on disrespecting her. He does not understand the concept of getting consent. There's no "s*xual abuse" tag in this so I assumed every ML would treat her with respect. <<less

I love this story but not so much because the FL doesn't care about the fifth brother though I kinda understand her because she took care of him since he was 8 or 9 years old and then suddenly she was told that he's her husband too? I get it you're not a pe*ophile but the poor ML was left behind and getting his hopes up. I stop reading because of this because I don't want to see him so pitiful. A slow burn read. I like reverse harem but minus the dull female MC and imo don't deserve all those gorgeous men that treasure her. (I agree with some of the reviews here where the female MC just a dull white lotus... er, is she a snow flake?) So far the only redeeming qualities are those hard working MLs and kudos to the translator to make it easy to understand.

Ok, tbh I skipped several chapters because it's become tedious but i'll still read it till the end?

For now I'll wait for the chapters to increase because cliffhanger will stab me to death (╥﹏╥) (I know every reader knows this painful death (≧▽≦)). Our modern MC, Li Man, has wound up in the rural Chinese version of Appalachia, in an area so poor, remote, and backwards, it's common for sets of brothers to marry and share one wife in order to preserve property (this is a real thing, google Fraternal Polyandry). Despite their poverty, she has hit the husband jackpot. The husbands are the true stars and major appeal of this story. They are absolutely adorable in their sincerity and there's something for everyone:

Li Mo: The gentle giant eldest, who is meltingly sweet... more>> and ham-handed, yet still capable of killing a wolf with those bare hands.

Li Yan: The sly, manipulative, charming one. Think of that guy in highschool/college who negged you, but you were still crazy about.

Li Shu: The super hot hot head who gets into constant fights, but has a heart of gold.

Li Hua: The soft and intelligent scholar.

Little Fifth: The shotacon. He may be too young (for right now) but he seems to see and know everything and is a master at manipulating them with his cuteness.

Our MC, Li Man, was a 30+ year old modern woman who was accidentally killed by her vicious MIL after her husband cheated on her due to fertility issues. She wakes up in a 15 year old body of a mysterious girl who just got sold to Li Mo to be their shared wife (it is implied that she was kidnapped, or wasn't actually for sale).

What I like about this:

    • They're poor. That's pretty rare for these stories. It's a refreshing change from the constant CEO/Emperor posturing.
    • It's a true reverse harem. She sleeps with all of them eventually. Expect some naughty bits ;)
    • While the guys are remarkably modern in many ways (they cook and clean and want her to like them before they jump her) there are culture shock parts where you are reminded "holy crap, no, not modern", which feels pretty real to me.
    • Slice of life. Think those Liziqi youtubes, how slow and repetitive and focused on the smallest details, yet you don't really mind. Most of the time.
    • While we know she'll make them rich eventually, the way the author goes about it feels pretty natural. It's a handful of small things, rather than one, big "fix", plus the timing of stuff the brothers have been working on all along (like finally being able to afford more farmland). Refreshingly again, some of the income generating schemes do not work.
What I don't like:

The MC, Li Man, is the weakest link in the characters. I find her annoying. She's written without much personality as an "empty pants" character the reader can step into. The men love her because she is far more beautiful and upperclass than most of the local girls, but I have to wonder how long the traits they admire, the uncalloused hands, the bright, white skin, would last now that she's in their family. She does that really annoying thing where she shows "affection" by complaining, which starts out cute now, but I can see turning her into a shrill harpy in the future. She is aggravatingly prudish for someone who had been married for 10 years, which leads to her constantly pushing them away for no reason, which drags this already slow pace out to a sometimes unbearable degree. You will want to scream at her to just let loose and have fun with all the hot guys.

Suuuuuuper slow pace, especially at the start. Other reviewers are right, you could read the first 20-30 chapters or so, then skip into the 100's and not miss much of anything. By chapter 200 or so, she's been there less than a month, and has finally slept with only 1 brother.

Inconsistencies. Li Man doesn't understand the local dialect, which makes sense and is a useful plot device so she is comfortable getting to know these brothers without the pressure of knowing she has 5 husbands. But, somehow, she adapts to being a rural, impoverished farm wife with no problem. The brothers are so poor they have to share a wife, buuuuuut there are a ton of romantic rivals who are obsessed with them, and some are quite willing to set aside the bride price for the chance to marry one of them. The brothers are extremely poor, buuuut, they seem to be able to buy whatever the MC wants. The author says the MC has only been there less than 10 days buuut, it's been over 100 chapters and one of them got a horrific injury that is now fully healed. Most of these are so small, you can overlook them, but they do get annoying when considered all together. There's also no real reason for the MC to be modern. They could have written her as a rich girl kidnapped and sold from a major city, with some amnesia, and it still would have worked. Probably, it would have worked better.

Still, it has its charms. I recommend reading it, but maybe cherry picking the best chapters and ignoring the rest. <<less

In comparison with other female leads that are assertive, smart, active, etc. She is too dull

Supposedly that's broken mandarin and she speak real mandarin or something, but shouldn't she'll be able to recognize a few words? Is not like is another language, its still the same language just pronunciated wrong

And the heck is wrong with those people, if I buy a wife and she run away, what is to you? How is it your business? It's my money that was invested on her, me myself I'm not mad, how dare you even think about hurting her?

I buy her, I have the say about her life and death, not you if she try to run away or not how is it your business <<less
