“I think my mom became a monster”

In the crowded and unpleasant morning rush subway, this sentence suddenly popped in to Xiao Jinyu’s mind.

The early office workers dozed off, the people in the crowded train swayed with the bumps of the subway.

The train continued to run, and without anyone’s notice, in the inescapable train, there was only two people left.

“Ding Dong! Arrived at White Garden station.”

The world suddenly became quiet-

“Does the Zhongdu metro have a stop called White Garden station?”

From this moment on, Xiao Jinyu’s world became bright and colorful.

“I hope with this world, it will rise from a huge and absurd logical fallacy”

“In the meantime, I will give you the name-”

This is genuinely amazing danmei here. It's very much just like a sci-fi detective series, I'd say, and it really has some interesting mysteries

  1. The worldbuilding is extremely fascinating. The "powers" of people here are called logic factors, and the concept behind just leveling them up is really just amazing. I find the worldbuilding very fascinating and I always love learning more.
  2. Mysteries: the mysteries here that must be solved are sooo interesting. There's twists and turns, problems, and certainly a very unexpected ending/culprit. At times, chills would literally crawl up my spine bc of some of the mysteries here. It was so fun to read and discover
  3. MC: We have a great MC here! He's smart, but not too smart that he seems unreasonable. Someone was saying that side characters compliment him every chapter and make it seem like he's "high-IQ" and they're "low-IQ", but I don't see that? Like seriously, where are you getting this from? He gets occasional compliments and observations of his skill level/potential from some characters, but it's absolutely nothing like constant brainless compliments of his skill or anything. So far, our MC is not OP either.
    1. someone said that "Of course, he's also super quick in figuring out various skills, instead of like everyone else who needs months or years to even understand their own, much less other's" about the MC, and it's so untrue that it hurts. What s*upid exaggeration. If you read further, you'd find out that
      Spoiler

MC actually takes a while to level up his skill bc he misunderstands it. And even then, there are all kinds of characters who are shown that have developed their logic factors faster than him. Everyone has different progression speeds. Some need months, some need years, some need weeks. MC is better than most, but not all.

      [collapse]
  4. ML: seems really fun and layered, though we don't know much about him yet. Someone here simply reduced him to "the tall, broad, mysterious super OP guy everyone fears and admires, " and while it's true, it's a very misleading description bc our ML is so more than that. Yeah, he's mysterious, but isn't that just more interesting so we can learn about him gradually? It'd be annoying if it was all an info dump, right? Aside from that, he fun enough to lowkey tease MC with his words and obviously has his own parts that we'll learn about. gradually, of course.
Overall, this is a really fun and great danmei. I highly recommend it, and hope that it'll continue this great quality up until the end!

Alright, let me just start with that I am chasing this novel right now (the author why daily update not daily : () .

I kinda like how the power system in this novel are because it sort of reminds me of LotM, but this one is with its own intrigues. I love how the mystery is weaved into something I cannot wait to solve.

The romance is... If you have read another story from the author, with this kind of vibes, name The Earth is Online ... more>>
Spoiler

ding dong, lmao why you read this spoiler?

[collapse]
, you'll understand that this author romance is the same and always questionable (doesn't even feel like there is, and this coming from a gay dude).

But anyway, I still like this and I hope someone will pick this up because some term is lost in translation for me. <<less

I can hardly believe this was written by the same person who wrote The Earth is Online, one of my favourite novels, rightfully published internationally.

This one is very obviously targeted at a completely different audience, it's so stereotypical BL that it hurts.

MC is apparently very intelligent, not a single character isn't in awe over his massive brain, it gets mentioned in every chapter some other character is present in.
Nothing he does, thinks or concludes is intelligent, it's very basic common sense, that the writer let's everyone point out how awesome he is would imply that they are all below-average in terms of IQ.

MC is a normal student, yet he has total control over his emotions and even natural instinct, he's probably a sociopath or at least chronical liar as well because absolutely nothing shows on his face, no emotions at all, his poker face is perfect.

Of course, he's also super quick in figuring out various skills, instead of like everyone else who needs months or years to even understand their own, much less other's.

Nothing to say about his appearance, take the usual Danmei MC and you already know it.

And yes, there's a mystery surrounding him, just in case someone missed the big sign saying "I'm the MC" that he's carrying around.

ML is, of course, the tall, broad, mysterious super OP guy everyone fears and admires.

Side character are stereotypes as well. The white haired strong and fierce one, the good guy with the goofy smile, the cheeky teen, and so on.

Story execution and world building are wonky if you want to be generous, horrendous if you want to be honest.

Info dumbs. So many, never ending info dumbs.
Fillers, lots of unnecessarily long-winded sentences, wordcount inflation, and repetition of already established information.
No logical consistency.

Spoiler

The writer seemed to have forgotten that the government who drags MC into their organisation has checked his background right at the start. They know who he is, where he lives, and therefor with whom he lives with.
He tells them he lives alone, while he officially lives with his mother.
A secret government organisation somehow completely forgot that he's living with his mom and that he just straight up lied to their face. Several times.
They ask him about his family at different points, clearly not knowing anything, despite even knowing which uni he goes to, which major he's in, etc.

Yeha, no. At least keep it consistent and somewhat logical. This kind of basic mistake should not be made by a writer, much less a published one.

[collapse]

I'm only 30 chapters in and these points are piling up higher and higher, suspension of disbelieve can't save a story from a lack of basic logic.

The writer probably wanted to get wider commercial success by sinking down to the level of low-quality mass-produced Danmei that just wants to sell to a big audience and didn't intent to be an actual, professional novel like The Earth is Online.

It's not working for me, there are enough objectively mediocre novels that are at least funny, cute, or have decent action/drama/thrill, this one here has neither, just a lot of weaknesses instead.

ok. As much as I love the author Mo Chen Huan, I couldn't force myself to love this novel as much as The Earth is Online.

The plot of this novel is actually pretty cool and when you read the description of this novel "I think my mom became a monster" it really intrigued me.

I am no longer sure of the plot, but, I'm pretty sure that monsters in this world aren't welcomed. They're killed. So the main character having a monster as a mother wouldn't be allowed if revealed... more>> to the public.

Which is why he hides it.

Whenever other characters (spefically the ml) came close to finding out about his mother.. I felt a kind of eagerness or I guess you could say I was at the edge of my seat.

The MC's distrustful attitude bc of this reason fit perfectly.

the interactions between the main character and the male lead I actually really liked. I'm pretty sure it was playful, sly male lead x calm, smart, secretive main character trope. I really like these 🙀🙀

OK.

for the reason I dropped this novel. At some point, I guess I got bored of the whole novel. The romance, the plot was slow af. Not like The Earth is Online type of slow which was executed good. But just slow. I got bored.

i feel like this novel wasn't really me. But seeing the other reviews I would rec you read it. ❤️❤️ thanks. <<less

From my rec list review: 5/5 for super interesting sci-fi/fantasy power types case fic. Unique powers and cool scenarios.

I saw other reviewers comparing this to The Earth is Online. To be honest, I much prefer this story to The Earth is Online, which had some interesting scenarios but had very bland MC/MLs and which dragged on a little too long. YMMV.

????????

I just finished reading and this is literally my reaction. And not in the good way.

This is a real definition of rushed and non-logical ending.

... more>> Like, I enjoyed it so much, it's a really interesting story, (level of intelligence you need to have to completely understand world building and all of the mystery stuff should mean you are one of top of the geniuses global) but it's just so disappointing.

It's like you leave your favorite part of the dinner to eat last, to have this satisfying aftertaste for a long time, but it turns out to taste worse than rest of the food and you feel bad for the rest of the day.

I think author became bored of this story or wanted to end this really quick and definitely gave up the idea of romance

Spoiler

if you take in the account fact that MC and ML held hands 10 chapters before the end of the novel and it's all of their romantic interactions, if we don't count 'fiery gaze' in every later interaction and brushing shoulders once. No joke, it may be the reason of the censorship, because even 'confession' was some kind of wordplay, when I needed at least 10min to think if ML declares his feelings for MC or he's just teasing him. Not even word about liking, forget about this unique type of romance like in TEIO. Plus for ML not hiding that he's gay, bare but rare minimum, so let's just applause that.

[collapse]

And about this rushed ending, in last chapter

Spoiler

main villain 1 (unknown MC brother) kills main villain 2 (MC biological mother) and then dies.

Their actions were literally the flow of the plot. Especially 1, he was there from the beginning and the main goal was to kill him, HE ALMOST ENDED THIS WORLD AND YOU SAY THAT WAS ALL BECAUSE HE WANTED TO KILL 2??? He was behind everything, controlled people around and made them kill each other, stole one of the most important artifacts of the country, nobody could catch him because he could imitate another person and hide himself. AND THEN HE APPEARS WITHOUT ANOTHER WORD AND DIES???? EVERYTHING HE DID HAS NO MEANING AT ALL??

We don't even know why he killed 2, who also appeared in person a few chapters before the end, made some kind of super funny extra game to save herself and run away, and during this game MC coincidentally realizes and reveals all of the secrets of this world, motives behind his mother's actions (which have no sense) and the boom, villains die and he can see new world, everyone are happy, nobody cares that their worldview just crumpled, they lived in unknown realm and all of the other sh*t.

Those two died, let's just forget about past 240 chapters, everything is all right, no need for explanation. But, to be honest, the amount of plot holes and unresolved in the end stuff makes me want to cry. It had so much potential, I want to know what they will do with 004, who is A02, about ML chain collapse, MC growth in rankings if his mother died, what about non-aggressive pollutants, lost characters and so much more.

[collapse]

I feel like a kid that had just their candy taken away. I don't know how much I have reread The Earth is Online, so my hopes for this novel were almost equally high, especially with the beginning like that.

But now I can only regret pulling all-nighters to finish this, and to have my youth stolen and never returned back again. I'm just a quiet user, but I had to write this review to at least restore my life force and accept the fact, that my candy is not coming back and all I have is regret of taking it in the first place.

It's a good choice to read this if you want to kill the time, but if you are going to really get into it, then be ready for massive disappointment. <<less

Some good words for this novel:

I saw many of the deficiencies other reviewer had took a note of, and actually, I don't really mind the stereotypes or cliches. Though I would like the mention the cliche was not as severe as the other reviewer said.

For example the characters stereotypes, I personally though they are quite an interesting bunch. Nothing exclusively unique, but not as painfully stereotypes-ish (like the overbearing ceo or the cold male god marshal) than what you would found in your average danmei (or maybe I just read... more>> too much tr*sh). The MC might be a bit boring, but the ML is pretty chill, I love chill characters.

The thing about characters' view over MC intelligent is also false. Yes, they are in awe of his smart, but it's nothing too severe to the point of almost worship. Their awe was mostly casual appreciation and recognition towards talented people like how a laid-back but good natured student's view on their school top students. There's also the fact that MC was not the only "genius" nor is he even the most OP one in term of intelligent, because all 5 level and above ability user would have roughly the same amount (or even more) of analytic skill as MC have.

The only reason why MC seems like he's the most intelligent fellow is because most of the high level user he was paired up with was known by their luck in advancement, or that their logic chain was relatively less complicated. In addittion, it's not like MC is right in every conjecture he made. There's also the fact that it's not only MC that doing the brainstorming here. Even the the high level user that I have said to have level-up purely by luck, have made significant contributions in some discussion.

All in all, this novel is pretty solid for a sci-fi/urban fantasy genre, maybe like 8.0-8.5 from me. The plot runs smoothly, there's no pacing issue, and the writing is not low-tier, natural because author had already been a veteran writer. And I love that there's no nationalism in this, I guess author learned from her past book, or maybe she doesn't have to keep up with her social credit anymore lol.

Fyi, I actually has been waiting for so long to read this novel since I have seen the raw synopses in jjwxc, but I never know it was actually Mo Chen Huan's work lol. She's a good author but I'm not particularly a fan of her. I even more hesitant in term of nationalism because well... she wrote King of Classical Music and boy the nationalism in that is *whew* 🥴... In short I'm glad the novel turn out okay. The story is nice to read, and even though I know the ending will be sh*t (based on the reviews) I don't think I'm going to change the rating. Unless if the sh*t ending also include the thing that I cared about and have not expected to turn out the way I think it wouldn't be.

What the actual problems are, in my view:

A more noticeable problem in my side tho, is that author have never emphasized (?) the characters context on what is happening/what had happened, or about certain other characters. For example, MC loves his mother right? But we never see him struggle internally with it. Like, the actions he had done to hide the existence of his mother is purely methodological and logical, though it's is true the action was driven because of emotional reason. I were the writer, I would at least written him to have some sort of reminiscence towards the mother as he see how thing it's not that it's initially it to be, and that his mother is now a monster.
Spoiler

The only time we have seen him show outright emotion, is when he see with his own eyes, how his mother had died.

[collapse]

Other example of it would be the post-condition of a severe incident that cost many lives. Author didn't have the alm to add more context to the cause. It's like, ok, the fireworks was done, let's sleep and have a party another day. Except this is not a firework, but a man made disaster with thousands of victims. Incident like this was only mentioned simply after it was done. Author only mention exclusively important info like how after the incident, the population of the effected city mostly move and etc.

Lastly, idk if this is actually deliberately done by the author, but I see many semi-important characters got "abandoned" lol. For example, in where I'm currently reading:
Spoiler

There's no mention of the duo who literally, possibly caught by another user in the time of the accident. And our last contact with them is how one of the two had just gotten a possibly important clue to the case they are working on, then they met someone, and the communication were cut off. Like what?! are we just gonna forget about them?? Are they okay??? Who is the user that they have met???? And what more outrageous is one of the duo is the little brother of the department head that had a lot of communication with MC. Why didn't she say anything about her little brother? the accident literally have just past. Are the duo okay? Are they missing? We don't f*cking know, and MC doesn't care about the team members that he had worked with several chapter ago 💀

[collapse]
So is this deliberate, or massive plot hole? Only time would know... *sigh* <<less
