A relaxing story of a business tycoon who, sick of machinations and struggle, returned to the medieval world and married into a merchant family to become a “Zhui Xu”, a husband that lives in the wife’s home. Even though his intentions were not so, he could not avoid the matters of family, country and world.

“There was once a person that stood at the top of the golden pyramid, with innumerable cheap jealousy and envy of people, walking this road, he was escorted by tens of thousands of people, yet he could not escape the long and lonely sleep under the gravestone.”

This hits a lot of the plot points you've read before: successful MC is betrayed in the modern era, dies, is reincarnated into a good for nothing ancient Chinese character that had just been married to a really talented hottie. What makes this story interesting and a great read so far is that the MC is male, marrying into her family. He doesn't have cheats, and he doesn't use his modern knowledge to become the strongest under heaven, make alltheguns, or all the other super powered... more>> reincarnation tropes. Non spoiler synopsis? When you've reached the top of the world by clawing and scheming and see the landscape is a barren wasteland, you take your second chance. Pass up the temptation of ego and power. The life of a husband in name only is a good one. <<less

This novel combines the major plot points of the Chinese novel Great Tang Idyll and the Japanese novel Risou no Himo Seikatsu. As the description says, the main character goes back in time becomes the newly married live-in husband of his wife's family. I'm not sure how much I can describe without it being a spoiler but I'll try anyway...

Spoiler

The main character dies in modern times and is revived in the recently married body of a meek scholar. The wife's family had him marry in because they wanted someone who would prevent the only daughter of the family from marrying out and would also not try to take control of their family. However, because he was an extremely successful and brilliant person in his previous life, he begins to act outside of their expectations.

[collapse]

As of the latest chapter, you get a good understanding of the characters' designs and how the author will want to move in the future.

I'm writing all of this more out of urgency because the translator makes it sound like he does not want to translate it anymore and I hope that someone else will give this a chance and continue translating it. <<less

The story is about a modern guy who transport into scholar that is being married to wife's family. This is set in alternative Song Dynasty with a lot of wuxia elements and Water Margin references. For example, some fictional characters from Water Margin will make appearance.

The story is generally slow, and its release rate is even slower.

In early part of novel, the story is basically slow Slice of Life. Most of the time are spent on idle literature, conversation, and romance. MC stayed low key and tried not to... more>> get involved with the family business, politics and country problems. In latter part of novel, the plot shifted toward a war and politics. MC will settle a lot of conflicts with force and strategy, and a lot of war tragedy will happen.

Spoiler

In later part of the story, where wars broke out. The main harem waifus are safe and sound. They actually won't participate in war very much--- other than managing the family. Only some capable wuxia girl will follow MC occasionally. There aren't many conflicts between waifus--- at least not as much as early part of the novel--- since war took prior.

The "potential" harem members really have it hard though. One is married politically by her family (the guy is married into her family as a puppet, so he never touch her). Her family is part of the royals of this dying dynasty, so most of her family are basically dead in recent chapters. MC was her teacher at first, but she kinda fell in love with MC due to his intelligent and modernized view (at least in term of treating woman). However, MC kinda see her as younger generation, so I am not sure if they'd get together in the end.

Another one turns into sour relationship with MC because of her ideology to save the current dynasty, which ultimately end in a futile attempt. Then there's one more, if you count, that initially (and still) admires MC but also couldn't forgive MC since he killed all her family members. MC basically shot her father and brother before they could hit him. Her father wanted him dead, and her brother wanted to take his main wife after killing him... they really deserved that hit.

[collapse]

Overall, I think Author didn't do well with the transition. He tend to stick to his old tendency of slice-of-life writing on this new war phase. For example, he spent too many text on side characters just to build him up, while MC turns into "one of many characters". I dislike this methodology, since I am more interested in MC than the enemies and 3rd party forces. <<less

At first I liked this novel because it was along the lines of To Be a Virtuous Wife and Eight Treasure Trousseau (and was TL by the same TLer) except it was in the perspective of a male (which was new and interesting) but then I noticed the harem tag and was slightly put off... though not to say it isn't entirely good so far (mostly slice of life so far and not yet to any official harem part besides the servant girl getting closer to him and a meeting... more>> with a girl outside) but the idea that he abided by the rule of one man and many wives of that time period makes me feel he's untrustworthy as a partner, esp. when he was the one married into the wife's family. <<less

Ah, Banana, you staunch communist.

Seriously though, this one is pretty good as well, much like his other work, the character is ruthless while appearing outward like a loon. He really really like to mess with people, but ultimately he has to come to term with failing and losing important battles as well as respectable acquaintances.

The biggest selling point for me was the depictions of war - the biggest heroes are the one die screaming and fighting to the last, while the most despicable are often not those who are outright... more>> evil but those who knelt and defeated in thought - what could I possibly do, they lamented, while being s*aves to the invaders and raise their blades against their own countrymen. You rarely find this kind of condemnation elsewhere aside from communist propaganda, so yeah, it tickled a particular spot of mine. <<less

I really love this novel. Thank you to the translator for their hard work, as it's not easy to translate all the classical poetry and philosophies, and reference all the historical events and borrowed from other classical literature characters.

The novel very/extremely traditional & very unique that I find it feeling myself going through the experiences of MC, BUT maybe it just I been listening to the audio for days & I feel dull after all this my first audio that over hundreds of chapters to listen to,
But I recommned for audio from Ximalaya FM, since the people who did the audio did a awsome job, since it more like a audio with all quality of movies, but just lacking only the pictures to go with the... more>> audio, but it sometimes a good thing, since you imagine the characters all you want as you read.

I recommend this to people who like a chill after all the other novels. After reading the translated chapters of 1-9, I starting listening to the audio of this novel first, then read the whole chinese raws if I like it, MC life so far in another world is chinese dynasty he tries to not get involved in families, country & world as stated above and tries to live a carefree life, since he tired of the life as stated above a tycoon.

I just almost finishing the audio of almost up to date of the updates,
If you want fast to complete the novel read the novel, but if you want slow and peaceful kinda like audio works for you. The audio people for the novel did a fantastic job having different characters sounds & background, it only just missing the pictures = that you just have to imagine yourself. This first time I listen to a audio of over 510 hundreds of chapters, I tell you my experince is not fun, due to you listen to audio and stop at a main part, you want to find what going on, for ex. This author pulls plot of chapters of many sides of characters when something happens & it makes me go crazy for what next = missing sleep to just find out for the end of that part of battle, scheme, love, & etc. But I would recommend to read the novel since it so much faster, since it takes around 50 chapters plus or minus for audio vs novel I prob can read 200-400+ chapters depending on length of chapters, but got to count in the time I keep track of the novel characters of personality, all relation, are they dead or alive, who killed or injured them & etc since chinese novel the most confusing since sometimes a novel has over hundreds of characters & you have to keep track of everything for incase the characters pop up suddenly out no where.

Spoiler for the novel of what I mean by traditional and etc of the novel.
Spoiler

It very traditional story of kingdom life in china, the story very real, as some parts might be not real is martial art of culivation, but who knows if culivation of martial artist real, the real parts are women traditional, Concubine, & etc of women. Some story of China history are mixed in, but I don't know since, I only watch the movie of some the Chinese history of legend that story passed down in records, since records are left behind, I didn't research of it record or story that written, bt if any intrested research yourself. The Characters are not s*upid or fake like, since like some story of histroy that mixed in the charaters personality are same as they be in history.

There so much to say but I say of MC, as mention above MC try to not get involved in alot of stuff, but the author plot of forcing MC to appear & solves the problem or revenge & etc. The females are not throwing themselves at him, but it percise planing of plots that lead to love & traditional women thinkings & etc.
The novel also has the history ot author or MC own opinion of some ot story of hypocrite of the Characters or people in history of china of prob legend or records of views of how s*upid they are, or how, I don't know how to explain it, but as I listen to the audio I compared the audio of some to the history parts & the real history or records of the movie I watched many years ago, you notice motives, plot & s*upidity of some people in history that led to their death & words or saying stuff that make you feel disgusting.
I can't say anymore since it so complex to explain, so can't expain much, & also because I sleepy now that I catch up to audio.

Probably the most boring beginning ever! First 11 chapters were about daily life of 100y.o. grandpa who lost all desire to live. So Boring. Couple times I even thought that mistakenly re read previous chapter! The same boring stories about his boring daily life. No actions, no development, no conflicts, no movements, no interactions, with vegetable as an MC. His second name is depression, he is whining about everything:past life, present life, his status, his boredom and loneliness, current age, environment, and even about his own proactive thoughts!!!! And... more>> nothing, absolutely zero actions... only tears and chess... If not description I would thought that this novel is some prank for suicidals.

Daily life of my grandpa is much more interesting. And to make things worse, every chapter is pretty big!

Spoiler

He get up, washed face, cleaned teeth, made exercises, ate breakfast, bath, went to his room. Then repetitive explanations:"his status is low; family relationships are complicated; his wife is perfect, jade skin, long legs and charm, beautiful, smartest and most outstanding woman ever". Then he had dinner went for a walk, drank tea, played chess with random grandpas and went to sleep. End. Next chapter- copypaste with ads about his complaints and whining about his boredom... How fun and entertaining

[collapse]

The fresh parts were about boring poetry, I'm bad in chinese poetry but at least something not about his wife (they doesn't even speak with each other), chess and his pitiful life.

I don't want to read further, maybe will wait for 20 translated chapters. Hope there would be first move/action. But one thing is clear, this vegetable doesn't deserve his second chance. <<less

This webnovel is a true masterpiece.

10/10

The story progress is insanely slow. But don't be fooled. If you can somehow keep up with the pace, you'll realize just how much of every second you spend on this webnovel was worth it.

... more>> It's a combination of slice of life, wuxia, war, politics scheming, romance and harem. And every part of it, is done so beautifully and so elegantly, with so much considerations and passion. Plus with the Author's eloquent and sophisticated writing style.. it's a basically a classic piece of art.

It has less action and more philosophical outlines. But every single small plot helps to build up the momentum for the grand plot. And when the accumulated momentum is finally released, that outburst is friking awesome.

[EDIT]

Sigh..I finally reached the latest chapter. Now I'm feeling empty. Initially, I read this webnovel because of the interesting and slow paced wholesome developments between the MC and his women. It was sweet and enjoyable except two or three major tense event. But it was still peaceful. Untill the war, everything turned upside down. From then, the situation became more tense.

Spoiler

After so many ups and downs, the MC rebelled. The whole dynasty fell into the gulf of bloody war.

[collapse]

From then on.. the more I read, the more depressed I became. The more I read, the more I wept. Sometimes, I felt hot-blood rushed to my head; sometimes, my whole body became cold. My thoughts got messy and tangled. And like this...I kept reading, reading, reading, and finally reached the latest chapter.. and now my heart is filled with so many complicated emotions.

This is more like I'm venting my emotions than actually writing a review. Heh.. but I really don't have much to say. This webnovel will be an unforgettable experience in my life. <<less

The novel's story is good but the way it is written is quite annoying.

  1. The author seems to avoid showing anything firsthand hand and there is a lot of description that can be skipped to find actual dialogue
  2. The chapter continuity is intentionally cut almost all the time > there is a big reveal around ch150 when FMC's family learns of MC's genius plan and the continuity is cut after the cliffhanger. This happens quite a lot but doing it in this scene bothered me quite a lot.
  3. The author makes normal scenes more grand than they need to be, so when an actual grand scene happens you don't feel the same impact
  4. There is a general lack of immersion overall, you never feel you are in the character's shoes due to paragraphs of unnecessary description or over-explanation

Don't be fooled by the first tens of slice-of-life chapters. This novel is a great saga, sets in ancient China background.

MC starts as salted fish "zhui xu", but later become famous as talented scholar, smart businessman, and cold-blooded martial artist nicknamed "Heart Demon" in the Jianghu. He is also known as The King Killer due to *spoiler*.

After the protagonist's lazy period passes, then comes continuous plot-twists. It tells a lot of wuxia-esque battles between martial artists, kings, and warlords; political intrigue within and without countries; various practical and whimsical philosophical... more>> ideas; heart-pounding colossal wars; heart-rending wartime tragedies; cute love stories; also business and economic concepts every now and then. Very, very cool.

On the downside, there's 3 points:

1. The novel has fairly slow pace. I love this, but others might not.

2. The author often takes some chapters to tell the stories of minor side characters. IMO, this is great for the novel's world building, because we all know that the world does not only walk around our MC. But well, some people might prefer an MC-focused story-telling.

3. Frequent foreshadows. This one makes me itchy as hell. We are told that the MC would be successful in the future, we can't wait to see it happens, but... the story is still ongoing, with slow pace, we don't know how MC will resolve all the fiasco in the world, and the author is still digging the tragic life of a war victim under the bridge.

I'll just come back to visit this novel again in one or two years, after -hopefully- the novel ends. <<less
