She’s Not Our Daughter!

Description

A few years ago, my ex-boyfriend, who I broke up with after our one-night stand, came to visit me as a duke. He said he regretted abandoning me.

What are you talking about? What’s there to regret when we’ve split up with ease?

Also, I think he even misunderstood my sister’s daughter for ours.

“I had no idea. I didn’t know you were raising our child alone.”

What is this situation?

Just then, my niece, who hid herself behind my back, stuck her tongue out at him.

“I hate you, you’re a bad guy who abandoned us. Go away!”

He staggered in a shocked manner.

No, he didn’t abandon you.

And I’m not your mother!

I gave this novel three stars, but to be fair, if you can overlook the fact that it's based on a misunderstanding that could be easily solved in five seconds (I can't make that mental leap personally) then the novel is a delight. The writing and translation is good and the characters are fun.

But, well, yeah. All the MC has to do to get out of her troublesome situation is to tell the ML that the girl isn't his daughter. And she doesn't immediately do that, for... some reason.

The logic here is stretched incredibly thin. It's an interesting take on the "FL runs away with the ML's baby" trope since she didn't actually run and it's not actually their baby, and of course, instead of the ML misunderstanding that the child isn't his, he misunderstands that it IS. All in all, it's pretty funny.

But, of course, the novelty of that fades pretty quick. Or at least, it did for me. I went into this KNOWING that the misunderstanding was going to be a huge aspect of the story,... more>> as was advertised to me both in the title and the summary, so I wasn't exactly in a hurry to see it resolved. However, if a misunderstanding like this is going to be a focal point, then there has to be a good reason as to why she can't tell him or that she needs to say quiet. If not, then it all just feels so contrived.

Spoiler

I know she's trying to protect her niece's identity, but she can still do that while also clarifying that she isn't her daughter. Say you adopted her, she's your ward, an orphan; there's a MILLION ways that it could be explained while still achieving that end. That's what makes the plot feel a little forced in some ways. She's not in any kind of unavoidable circumstance or dealing with an issue that cannot be circumvented in some way.

[collapse]

And this is coming from someone who loves a good misunderstanding, but this isn't an example of a good one.

If you can suspend your disbelief and just read it for what it is, you will have fun. I found myself laughing every now and again. But if you can't and you need logic to bleed through every word, this might not be your speed. <<less

You know, I usually enjoy misunderstandings but not the ones that can be solved in one sentence. The fluff was good, writing was decent but I simply don't enjoy this one.

I've read through ch 36 and it started getting really frustrating about 15 chapters ago, and is getting worse by the chapter. This is dragging out way too long and it's mostly just filler about salons and tea parties and gossip and these other characters that don't really matter. And this whole situation is continuously traumatizing for both Cassius the ex and Hanael the toddler - ... more>>
Spoiler

Cassius is filled with regret and trauma of both going to war and believing the woman he loves ran away from him after becoming pregnant with their baby girl, and it would be incredibly traumatic for Hanael, still a baby, who we find out actually believes she is Sierra's daughter but is rejected by Sierra who keeps denying that she is Hanael's mother. It's freaking CRUEL!! Hanael thinks it's a lie! And Sierra has raised the girl since birth and is biologically related, SHE'S YOUR DAUGHTER NOW, JUST ACCEPT IT ALREADY!!! : (: (: (

[collapse]

Meanwhile Sierra is both totally ignorant to how everyone who comes in contact with her becomes worse off for it, since Cassius and crew warp actual reality into seeing Sierra in the best, most pure light. Sierra is kind of a villain for being so oblivious to how much pain she is causing to the people around her because she's so damn oblivious to it. I don't think I can stomach reading this story anymore, y'all. <<less

The misunderstanding doesn't play as big a role as the description and some reviews may suggest. It certainly gets the ball rolling, but our ML doesn't seem to really care if the daughter is actually his or not.
Spoiler

This dude's been madly in love with this girl probably since the day he met her. All he wants is to keep her by his side and there wouldn't have been such a long separation between our protagonists if the sister (real mom) hadn't placed a barrier over the entire area where our FL was hiding.

[collapse]

Funny misunderstanding, but it seems to just be a unique take of the usual cliche at the start of the story rather than the primary focus.

It's not all sunshine and rainbows. Hanael's mother has lots of enemies and that's the primary reason the FL doesn't reveal the truth right at the beginning. Without the protection of a big duke daddy they probably wouldn't have lasted the first week.

This is funny! A story full of misunderstandings.

Most characters have silly misunderstandings that honestly are so easy to correct. If the MC sat down with the guy and explained everything then the story would be over. MC doesn't do that though. I think it has something to do with the sister.
Spoiler

MC's sister is a mysterious figure who seems to be hiding something from MC. I think it could be a birth secret? Both sisters seem to be very talented in different areas so I have a feeling that it might be a birth secret.

[collapse]

Also, I saw some reviews saying they don't understand why MC just doesn't tell the truth.
Spoiler

I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned that MC doesn't correct the misunderstanding to protect her sister's kid. There seems to be some people after her sister or her kid or maybe the MC herself? I think the sister is hiding and trying to find whoever it is that is planning to harm them.

[collapse]

For now, most characters seem foolish. The plot is the type where the answer is simple but the characters themselves make things complicated for themselves. For character development, I've only read 28 chapters and I haven't noticed any for now. The story is just starting after all so maybe (and hopefully), I can see more of it in the later chapters.

This is more of a rom-com with some hints of mystery? I don't think this is a deep and emotional type of story. It's pretty silly and funny. If you're looking for a light and easy read then maybe this is for you?

This novel is pretty s*upid, especially since the misunderstanding is so easily fixed, but for plot reasons, it's not. The level of miscommunication between MC and ML rivals that of dog blood chinese novel dramas that involves the lady running off with a bun and ends with a lot of angst and family drama.

I repeat, this novel is s*upid.

Delightful twist on a very typical romance plot on cn/kr novels. I just hope the misunderstanding doesnt get dragged on s*upidly, the kid doesnt help since she is very much a little kid that thinks she is a capable "adult", she is adorable. Misunderstanding galore and I also think we got unreliable narrator and their relationship and breakup did not go as the FL thinks.

this story really sucks.

Actually I like this kind of plot, and it's okay with 'misunderstanding', but the misunderstanding in this story makes me annoyed.

First, the MC doesn't seem to be trying to resolve the misunderstanding with ML, even though she really wants to end the relationship with her. I didn't even know he had revealed Hanael's real parents until chapter 37

... more>> Second, MC seems to really want to part with ML but she enjoys what ML gives him like it should.

Third, ML really loves MC but MC doesn't think of him as more than a friend. I'm sure that MC never loved ML. This makes my heart hurt so much.

There are so many flaws in this story that irritates me. <<less

When I find good novels I tend to finish all the translated chapters before I make a review, except for those that I've dropped. But since there are mixed reviews here I wanted to share my thoughts as well :D.

I like this story a lot. It's well translated, very easy to read, and I think a very coherent story. Its a very light read with cute moments and a concerning amount of misunderstandings that keep piling up, but its all fun to read. I usually read novels with angst and... more>> not much light fluff cuz who doesn't want to watch a depressed and emotionally scarred FL become happy? Or I guess this is just a phase dunno. But I also read some fluff ones, especially if it is done well. And this was one of them.

The plot or the world of the series is very fresh to me, especially with the FL. She is apparently this very sickly looking yet very beautiful woman who is raising her niece, creating a misunderstanding between them and the duke. But she ain't ur typical naive kind protag, which is why I love the series. As the story goes on, the more the misunderstandings pile up as well as bits of info like:

Spoiler

scenes where it increases the possibility the the neice is actually the dauther of the FL and ML. From the translators site the readers have this theory that the FL was actually magicked, magiced, spelled (?) by her sister to forget she gave birth bcoz reasons? idk, I think its fun to think that there is no obvious end

[collapse]

I know the misunderstandings can be over if the FL opens her mouth. She does, she actually keeps saying " bruh, ur not the father" "no, shes not ur child" but the ML doesn't believe her. She should delve into the issue more so that they could understand the situation... buuutt none of them seem to believe her, and it seems that even if she does tell everything, no one would belive her. Though aside from ppl not listening she needs to protect herself and the neice from "danger"... which I can get over if I squint, and because of the theories of other readers. And a problem that I find with her, though not so much, is that she seems to feel bad for not clearing up everything which actually make the ML feel like sh*t cuz of his guilt. Buutt after she resolves herself on not explaining herself because no one believes her anyways, she just leisurely enjoys the things given to her. With no guilt. Idk if thats good or not, like yea enjoy your life but at least try to hesitate a little.

Them not believing her is bcoz :

Spoiler

She looks sooo weak, sick, pure, and innocent that they think she is just lying. They think that "awe, look at her pitiful ass trying to cover everything up... Dont worry, we know that u need help. we know u've been suffering all this time" which I think is funny and cute of them. but it does race a concern as to why other characters are too dense, ignorant, or self-absorbed with their own feelings and thoughts. Like everyone is just like this cuz apparently shes always trembling?? WHY IS SHE CONSTANTY TREMBLING??! This is why I wrote a review cuz of this. She was described healthy, although skinny, but healthy and strong. So I don't understand why does she, in the eyes of people, look like a dying maiden who has been through the harshest of storms??? is this magic? is that a skill?? what is this??????? I know that because of this people came to like her, or at least not be hostile. but whyyy. I can get over the misunderstanding thing just a bit, but idk why her "trembling" bothered me so much lol

[collapse]
... that concludes my mini rant.

So, character-wise, everyone is alright. The little girl is cute and I can understand why she acts like that. The ML, I like him enough I just want him to stop being s*upid and open his ears and eyes properly same as with other extras. Their interactions are really nice, which I'm also grateful for. The sister... yeah, she doesn't have much use and seems like tr*sh as a mother but as a "____" seems understandable.

Its a great easy read. its light if you can look past the misunderstandings. The characters, translations, the story and the illustrations are nice. So I do recommend this^^. <<less

To address all of the comments with the "misunderstanding" in the story, im confused as to why mostly everyone said that she could've just told the ML directly. The MC had a specific and perfectly understandable reason as to why she couldn't explain and tell the ML that the girl is not her daughter. I mean why would the girl even be with her for so long if she had her own biological mother to be with and take care of her?

Spoiler

The girl (which is her niece and sister's daughter) is with her because her sister is an archmage and the girl's possible father may also be an important person. (They said he was the owner of the wizard's tower if im not mistaken) The MC had to take care of Hanael as they needed to protect her and her parents arent really available to be able to take care of her, its also said that her sister is on a secret mission where it is probably really dangerous for Hanael if she were to grow up with her real mom instead.

Tbh, the plot of the story is very interesting so I decided to read it. Well, how to said..... The novel is okay (The art is pretty, ML is quite good.), but I don't think I will finish this story. I always feel than I'm frustrated with the FL all the time.

This series has been a delight to read due to the characterisation and plot so far. It is a light, fluff and funny read set in an interesting fantasy setting where magic exists. It never pretends it is anything that it is not, continually delivering on all of the promises made in the first few chapters. And yes, I really like this story.

The story doesn't reveal exactly what is going on with Hanael thus avoiding the dreaded 'info-dump'. We are also provided a wealth of misunderstandings due to the ML... more>> and large group of the cast members ignoring and often filling in the gaps to fit with their own preconceived notions. This element seems to have not hit the right notes with some readers but I find it quite charming as it gives us insights into the mindsets of some of the cast, such as the adorable godmother of the ML. <<less

So far I think there is a reason why she can’t correct the misunderstanding.
Spoiler

it might have something to do with her sister (the real mother of Hanael) it may be to protect Hanael since she also casted that hides the village, but it only lasted for 5 years. I think that’s why she can’t blatantly tell to others like the Duke that Hanael is ‘t really her daughter
