“I can’t accept this! I can’t! Even as a ghost, I’m going to spend eternity cursing that your relationship will shatter like glass! Break apart like a pair of mandarin ducks that fly away from each other!” With such a persisting obsession, it would be difficult for the vengeful departed spirit to move on.

Ji Man had only read a light novel to pass the time, but she was unexpectedly pulled into a very strange dream. She had become the novel’s most vicious villainess.

The novel rewinds to the beginning. The villainess who had been ordered to commit su*cide reappears on stage and begins to follow the plot as she walks toward the novel’s ending once again, to a courtyard deep inside the marquis’ residence. A female lead that’s like the Holy Mother. Countless cannon fodders. The imperial family’s favor…

I understand why not a lot of people would like this story. The ML is not very likeable in the beginning. But the setting here is ancient times, we should not impose our values to him who has power and ambition.

I really like this story as it has so much political drama and the characters are so well written. The plot moves according to their actions and they stay true to their characterization. They don't make weird decisions or make weird conclusions just to move the plot along. (Trust me,... more>> I have read so many bad ones. O_O)

The novel is very well written and the political plot is so intricately weaved with the inner courtyard life of a highly influential family, you'll miss it if you blink.

Spoiler

This is full of drama and at some point, I would feel so bad for the FL, I keep thinking she should just run away. LOL.

I really hated the ML but I understand why he had to do what he did. He was trying to survive the transition of power and he had to be wary of everyone. He was very ruthless and he didn't even spare his children when he needed to. He's very typical power-wielding person of his era. While he is very tr*shy according to our standards, he knows what he needed to do to make sure he can weather the storm, grasp, and maintain power.

First off the translation is amazing. There’s helpful links. Poems to read and little tid bits that helps make the story intriguing.

Had to dropped this when ... more>>

the MC’s baby is kidnapped just right after his birth and the MC had to sort herself out by herself. The depression she had to face with no help from anyone not even a smidge of support from MC... I knew something would happen when the ML said she can be rest reassured about giving birth because he didn’t had the intention on letting her keep the baby after birth. (I knew it was to protect the baby but Damn ML that was the only time the MC gave you her trust and you spat on it) I can’t believe they ended up together after this. Then he had the gall to show up with the baby as an illegitimate child. I can’t just can’t.

this story is too depressing. It hurts my soul to continue. The stars is just for the translator really. <<less

I came with low expectations after reading other reveiws, but this is such a gem. Honestly this novel deserves a better rating.

MC is such a realistic character. As a character who transmigrated from a modern world to an ancient setting, she immediately doesn't go around pushing her modern idealistics to everyone's heads. She uses modern knowledge and psychology to deal with different people. She is smart, cunning, manipulative but treats people genuinely when they treat her well. She is loyal and considerate but doesn't tolerate betrayals. I love how she... more>> doesn't have a huge golden finger like other transmigrated MCs. She is a chemistry major, so she knows to make some skincare products and uses that to gain favours and to make money (actually her products are more like home remedies used in Asian countries rather than complex chemical products)

As for a secondary character in the original book who schemed against the FL (WenWan) and died tragically, MC's life is not guaranteed a happy ending. It doesn't help the original character used to be a horrible person who abused everyone around her due to her obsessive love for ML. Therefore MC has to put twice the effort to clear old grudges and make a good impression on her to avoid getting died by the hand of ML. So she avoids ML and his harem to avoid getting into conflicts, focus on developing her business to get financial independence and try to develop her relashionship with people who genuinely support her. ML is a very powerful minister. He has a bunch of wives and concubines but he doesn't genuinely love any of women in his harem. He is aware of their schemes and how they were used as political spies, but he pretends to not to know any of these schemes to beat them in their own game. When he want a woman to behave in a sensible way without throwing tantrums, he gives power to other women till she submits to him. He is very sexist, but it is to be expected within the ancient sexist society. All the other characters in the novel are three diamentional characters. Every character has a reason to behave in a certain way. None of the villain characters hate the MC just because she is MC or because ML loves her. They have their own set of goals. Some want financial gains, some want power and some people compete with her for the sake of their children. Even WenWan is not a completely evil character although she turned out to be really evil at the the end. As a secondary character in the original novel MC had to try very hard to defeat WenWan to end up going to the starting point because of WenWan's MC halo.

The only thing that I dislike about the novel is how both ML and MC abondened their first child in a temple. I really feel bad for that child because he is such a lovable, sensible child. At least he grew up safely in the temple compared to when he was with his parents (He was switched at birth, lived two years believing another women is his mother, kidnapped twice as a hostage and poisoned once.) It didn't help much that both ML and MC are carrier oriented people who prioratized their respective lives over their child. <<less

I was telling a friend that "Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir" was like the "Gone with the Wind" of cnovels, only if Rhett and Scarlett had a happy ending, and Melanie didn't die and Ashley learned to love her back before it was too late. What an amazing multi-layered novel with a cast of characters to root for, hate on, cry for, care about, etc. I loved all the extra stories that the author included at the end as well. Don't skip them!

This novel seems to be controversial because of... more>> how unlikeable the male lead is in the beginning... and honestly continues to be for a large part of the book. But you know what? The female lead wasn't that amazing either and did some equally shady stuff. But I loved how questionable all the characters were. There was no black and white, only shades of grey. Like Scarlett in GWTW, I found myself utterly fascinated at the lengths the female lead would go to to achieve her goals.

But for those of you who hate harem novels and bad endings, let me assure you that your patience and perseverance are more than rewarded by the novel's conclusion. To quote the author: "I admit that I'm a cheesy and dramatic writer that's been professionally whitening the blackened male leads for the past twenty years. "

So yes, there is a happy ending. And a monogamous ending too for those who are curious. I spent 4 days binging this novel and find myself still thinking about plot points and character reveals that blew my little mind. <<less

I guess it was one of the few novels that I was willing to read until the ending. Actually, I was quite surprised at myself that I could read a novel which has above 500 chapters, till the ending.

The point, where the characters feel more humane than other Chinese Novels, was appealed me most. For example, ML still loves Heroine, other characters have their reasons for acting out, and MC's are not too OP (actually they are but in comparison to other novels not that much), etc... And I liked... more>> the fact that FL didn't become Empress or something, and stick to being just a noble wife. In my opinion, if ML became the Emperor and as his wife, FL were to become the Empress, it's role feels like out of FL's character, and the story would have just messed up.

Well... In conclusion, this novel had its good points. It was worth reading. But I don't think I will read it again. Maybe the mood was just right when I was reading it, but I guess not now. Too much drama for re-reading... (but it indeed was an interesting read while not knowing what will happen next.)

It is not a peaceful, fluffy reading, but I can assure you it will make you wonder about the next chapters. So why not try reading it? <<less

Love this novel. All time favorite. As of today, I read this novel three times (going on fourth) since its completion. For some reason I always come back to it. I love it. I understand some may not like this novel and rate it low because of ML. But you must remember, the setting is set in ancient China where marriage is for political reason not love, especially in aristocratic families. Then again, Nie Sangyu married Ning Yuxuan out of a one-side love and Ning Yuxuan and Wen Wan marries... more>> because of love. But both marriage still political. Nie Sangyu was from the third prince side and Wen Wan from the crown prince. Can't really hate Ning Yuxuan for being a casanova when women for political reason are getting thrown into his harem. Like Nie Sangyu mention, the imperial family loves to interfere in Ning Yuxuan back courtyard. He's doing this to balance power in the imperial court. If he was to favor one, it's like he's leaning to a certain faction. When reading these novels, we either hate it or love it. But we must at least be open minded and not be bias as how these stories are told.

Also, I love how Nie Sangyu (Ji Man) is so indifferent towards Ning Yuxuan when he's trying to make her jealous or testing her bottom line. He always end up getting burn. He sure grovel to win her affection. <<less

Every so often, I come back to this novel and change my rating for it, because my anger rises and abates from day to day. I like the MC--I always love a strong, clever female lead in a historical romance, no matter how many times it's been done before! The plot was gripping and dramatic in all the best ways, and it made me binge this thing until around the final arc, when I just. Couldn't. Take it anymore. I thought that this far into the story, the MC and... more>> ML's relationship might improve, at least a little bit. I'd kept pushing on, holding onto my weakening hope, until I finally just quit out of anger. He doesn't respect her. He never has and never will. There's already a systemic power imbalance between them because of the historical setting, and he exacerbates that by being a scummy dirtbag! Maybe if their romance weren't so central to the story--or even better, if the ML weren't such an ass--I could've persevered to the end, but alas :/ <<less

Although I finished reading this, I skipped some chapters, because I was not interested in the arc. The plot branched out too much, and personally did not leave me fulfilled. If you read this novel thinking it was one of the usual romance with transmigration story, you are very wrong. There was too much scheming, and I'm not even talking about courtyard matters.

The story is well written and the translation is good. However, honestly throughout the whole story I wished that the FL would never touch her husband, never have... more>> a child with him, and get with the second male lead. In the first 150 chapters, I shipped her with the second male lead, because I thought it would go through the usual transmigration plot. However... the story became complicated, and none of her path to romance can be fulfilled. This story isn't exactly about people falling in love and having their love fulfilled. This story is not a simple transmigration story where it goes through the normal plot only to slightly switch the affection of the man from the heroine to the villainess while only slightly changing the plot (e.g. Doomed to be a Cannon Fodder). This story goes beyond the depth of the original plot. It does not focus on courtyard matters, but goes far far beyond a simple romance novel. However, from start to finish I never thought that the so-called ML and the FL belonged with each other. I just never understood their story. Overall, I think the FL was s*upid for her choice in the end. Well, I guess she chose to live her life in a dream forever. <<less

    • This novel is more on plot.. I like how it showed the complicated relationship between ML and FL. How close it is to reality. I like how the FL handle herself in Love relationship.
    • Love relationship always start with interest, how much interest each have. How her response towards ML. ML doesn't love her, so she does not love her too.
    • Oh well, but it will be more interesting if she can just leave ML, it's not like her marriage towards ML is important. If she left her she can protect her clan from the conspiracy of the throne. She's got brains and she's good in business.
    • If she left she won't suffer. Let ML deal with his Wife and concubines. As well as his family. She can just do whatever she wants and if she had enough power to protect herself she can plan meticulously to capture or revenge ML. Whatever the ghost wants.

I actually passed this novel due to the low score but after being so bored and already read alot of the top novels, I decided to give this a try. I actually ended up liking it alot, may even say this is one of my top historical josei novel, and I find alot of the reviews giving it such low score unjustified

If you came into this novel expecting some generic love story where the ML is some typical romance lead who falls for FL because she's so AMAZING~ and BEAUTIFUL~ and they become lovey dovey after 10 min and you want some typical generic love story that is all over the webnovel section then leave now. The dynamic between the FL and ML is VERY different from any romance novel out there. If anything, the writing focus on historical days to days of harem life, politics, throne intrigues, and "romance" aspect isn't the main focus but I still love the character developments of the lead characters. (Abeit some of them are really s*upid to create conflicts but some others behave more reasonable like ML's mom who's not your typical tyrannical mother-in-law)

The people who hate the ML in their review need to understand... he is a completely historically accurate man. Yes, he is extremely flawed, and also FL as well. He does extremely questionable things for the sake of his family to survive the power struggle but also because he was taught from birth this society's values. Actually I can understand how he came up with the decisions he made.

By modern standard, he hold misogynistic views but it is completely understandable for him to be like this because he wasn't born with our current views. I don't get why people are mad about characters in a historical novel being... a bit historically accurate. If anything those ML who swear to only "love one person the rest of their life" are actually the romanticized fantasies sold to modern female readers. BUT, even then what I like the most is his character development. He wasn't born with the feministic ideas the FL have and was shocked when she talks about these kind of ideas because his ingrained teacher can't comprehend that... yet he DID gradually changed for her. He understood her demands and he did his best to fulfill her wish of a loyal husband so in the end she would stay with him. Their relationship isn't typical romance novel one but I actually appreciate the development and growth between them where they learned to trust each other... and it does take a long time by like the 400 chapters or so

The FL never loved him either, until the very very end. She only cozy up to him when she wants something and he knows that but he plays along with her anyway. Their relationship in the early stage is more of one of opportunistic nature. It's also completely understandable he doesn't have feelings for her until more than half of the novel since he hated the body she resided in. He was guarded against her because he was suspicious of her personality change and even thought she's a demoness but decided since she never harmed him then he won't harm her. It's actually a refreshing thing to see in these type of novel for someone to actually notice the FL personality changed and be suspicious. The FL herself is also a flawed and selfish person. She dragged some characters into the harem fight just for them to support her. She made "morally" wrong mistakes and decisions regarding her brother's marriage so it's not like she's a saint either. She's opportunistic about using her body to taking advantage of ML when she need to have something done.

Overall, I just think their dynamic isn't that bad as people complains in reviews because they're both quite opportunistic people when they need to have something done. It's actually not hard to understand FL eventually accept ML despite the things he did because he was simply a product of his time and environment and in the end, he DID changed for her

The novel intrigues and political dramas are quite good. But like I said, don't come in expecting fluffy dramas and have wrong image of the novel. For most of it, it's more about a story of modern woman trying to survive in a feudal era with different social system. If this story set up isn't your taste then don't read it but I disagree people giving it a low review just because they have the wrong expectation and wanted some fluff novel

I kept reading because I was interested in how the play turns out. My only complain is Wen Wan, OG FL. Goddamn she's so dumb I wish she got off faster

The main lead is such a pathetic person that it is beyond help.

Spoiler

1) Why does she think she'll actually be transported back if she makes the old owner of the body satisfied?
2) Talking about how much she is a virg*n but then still f*cking the husband that is f*cking tr*sh as a person?
3) Doesn't even f*cking try to leave the shitstain of a place that she was transported into?

At times it felt like she actually has braincells but then every now and then she just disabled her f*cking brain and does dumb shit.

I'd rather tell the old owner of the body to go f*ck herself and then kill myself if she doesn't leave me alone as if there was a high chance of getting back into reality if she completes dumb as f*ck demands anyways.

The main chracter really is a glorified prostitute for this old soul.
Pathetic.

I have complete aversion to this novel like Usas.

why is ML is still a ML and why MC who is a transmigrator modern 21st Century woman falls in love with such a scumbag🤮

Original NS might have done somethings in wrong way ways to get attention and love but what's with his attitude of her. He is pretty scheming and manipulative so why did he marry original NS when he knows he get close her or treat her well or accept her because crown prince will not allow that to happen... more>> due to politics. Why marry her and humiliate her???

He claims that he loves NS but doesn't care for in least bit. Like

1) is reluctant and feels sad to divorce his concubine who abducted his NS just born baby. WTH????

2) Sleeping with NS maid, even though you are guy there should be limit I mean does he just sleep with anyone who is female (it serves him right that maid makes him wear a green hat)

3) Accepting NS's step sister as concubine even though he isn't interested in her (I think he only did that to gain new female to sleep with)

4) OriFL sends NS child to palace as hostage

5) Why didn't he sent away oriFL when she know NS is still alive and faking amensia who is threat to NS and her son

Why he choose to pamper and spoil oriFL, covers up her schemes (she even kills her own child beacuse she is daughter) even though he knows everything she did and putting on white lotus act. I don't understand what he likes about her he just picked her off the street (worst part he knows that she is sent by crown prince to control him). In original plot he kills NS for trying kill oriFL but what about now how many times she tried to harm NS and her child

I don't understand isn't there any aristocratic and families in kingdom and only ML is force that decides who gets throne

Don't even talk about NS/JM I mean why does she sleep with him get pregnant.I don't even understand when and why she starts loves ML and decides to be him ???

I would liked if she divorced ML and destroy and overthrow crown prince (he is most of reason for destroying her life). I mean she is clearly capable she overthrew 2nd prince. <<less

Firstly I’d like to point out that I am one of those readers that is pretty tolerant. I try not to judge too quickly & give characters or a novel a chance (tbh usually multiple changes). After seeing some negative reviews, I just decided to give the novel a chance.

This novel is definitely one of those where you either enjoy or getting frustrated & drop. Funny enough I was did both.

In the beginning I was enjoying the novel, especially the MC. She was pretty chilled about everything & also... more>> gave some funny commentary. It wasn’t until I realized that the ML was really the ml, that I wasn’t going to enjoy this novel as much anymore. So if you’re looking for a whirlwind romance, this ain’t for you.

Honestly I was determined to go as far as I could, but when I was around Ch120, I couldn’t take it anymore. I started skipping chapters & only read according to the titles. This was when I realized I should just skip to the end. And I was so disappointed with the end.

Yes the ML is disappointing & frustrating & a perfect example of how the tr*sh ancient men were but honestly maybe I could have been ok with it if the MC didn’t end up “loving” him. Like even if she stayed in the marriage for the sake of her children, I would’ve accepted. Literally throughout the novel I was comforting myself by saying she’s gonna go back to the modern world it’s ok, but no she actually stayed. This was frustrating.

I am ridiculously tolerant of ml’s that are cold/mean/controlling but darnit this ML was just urgh...

There were points where he would tease the MC but I just couldn’t commit to liking him because he was so frustrating.

Personally I can forgive a ML as long as he’s honest about his feelings/intentions by communicating w/ MC & most importantly respecting the MC & her choices/opinions. I don’t know if he got to finally doing these things since I skipped a lot, but for me I was too late, after how he treated her.

Im also not sure how the original MC story & feeling were resolved. I was hoping she’d get her wish & come back so that Ji Man could leave to her own world.

Honestly I thought it would be like ‘to be a virtuous woman’. But it was so disappointing. <<less

This is my favourite CNovel that I have read so far. From the moment I started reading, it was really hard to put down, so I ended up spending 30 hours (?) on my phone within a few days because of it.

This novel gets better and better the more you read it. Although, of course, if you end up not liking it then there is no need to continue reading. But if you want to give an accurate review, you should try to read the whole thing.

I absolutely love the... more>> protagonist. The Male Lead, to be honest, I didn't really like him at all until the very end. A LOT of the characters in this novel are smart in their own ways, they're fleshed out and have their own motivations and ways of doing things that were objectively good, bad, selfish, etc. My favourite part of the novel was how the Female Lead didn't like the Male Lead at all (because neither did I, to be honest) and it was in a very believable way (because to be honest, in this day and age, who would put up with a Male Lead that acted like that?). They actively tried to oppose each other and they tried not to let the other whatever they wanted freely, which really made the whole feud between them very nice to read. It wasn't a typical romance, in fact, for most of the book, I would argue that there's not much real romance. Which is good because I also want to read a good plot alongside the romance, I don't really care if it takes a long time.

I think that the neither of the protagonist of this novel are good people, which is exactly what makes them a suitable pair for each other. They are both cunning people. The way that they clash with one another under the guise of a couple is just fantastic. And of course, everyone faces the consequences of their actions, which is what made reading this extremely satisfying.

There is kind of one complain that I had with this though.
Spoiler

I was extremely pissed that the protagonists never bothered to visit their first-born son after they sent him away with that guy. It may have been too late though, seeing as he spent a lot of time away from his actual parents and they didn't really raise him themselves. The extras where he was mentioned made me sad, because he could've been living a life with his parents without the feud. I do understand why he was sent away though. But precisely because he was sent away, he was able to save (?) his mother in the end.

[collapse]

Anyway, that author's note at the very end... I'm glad that the author chose to gave this novel a happy ending. I really don't know what I would've done if she decided to go with the ending she originally thought of. It would've made me really mad.

Thanks very much to the author and translator. <<less

JUST KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING IN FOR_ (´ཀ`」 ∠) _

I would like to start by thanking the translator for all her hard work in translating this novel. Obviously, this novel is something that she holds very dear to her heart and she takes the time to give certain words and phrases context so that the readers can have a better reading experience.

As many others have said before me, this novel can be extremely hard to read. Although the novel does have an entertaining plot and a MC that makes logical... more>> decisions, it also has a VERY dislikable ML (╬ಠิ益ಠิ). In all honesty, I don't see how he can redeem himself after all the things that he has done.

For starters, since the novel is set in ancient China, the ML has multiple wives, which is understandable. So with the excuse of the time period where this novel takes place, we will sort of excuse his polygamy. HOWEVER, this does not excuse the fact that he is unable to manage his horde of women. He treats all of them like pawns in his "political games" and keeps collecting them like Pokémon's╮ (╯∀╰) ╭

So with his position as a powerful Marquis, he is seen as a very important ally to have in the two different factions that are struggling for the throne. Yet his seemingly high IQ just can't save his lack of EQ. He treats the women around him as disposable objects and allow for them to pit against each other yet at the end of the day, he has this unrealistic expectation for them to love him and only look towards him. Apparently, he's the best thing since sliced breadლ (ಠ益ಠ) ლ

But at the end of the day, this is still a decent transmigration story. The MC is not OP and doesn't have any cheats or superpowers. She will be schemed against and may not always know who her enemy is. Furthermore, I don't think that the MC chose the ML because she wanted to (at least from what I've read so far). It's just that she had no other choice. Women back then did not have a lot of choice in terms of who their husbands are and the women that their husbands brought home.

So at the end of the day, don't look at this and expect a love story that follows your morals and expectations of what love truly is. This is just a girl making the best of her situation and trying to survive in this relationship that she never chose. And honestly, if this ML is the person that she has to spend the rest of her life with, why make things difficult for herself? It's better to have a civil relationship than to flip a table on him (╯°Д°)╯︵ ┻┻ <<less

Out of all the transmigration novels, this one is the arguably one of the best. Our MC isn't an assassin from the future or a Mary Sue who always has things go her way. But is capable, smart and unrelenting in her belief of herself. Unlike the other heroines who suddenly turn into mush when they encounter the ML, we see our MC navigate her way through her situation in a mature and appropriate manner. Her character is complex, flawed and challenges the reader to dive deeper into the narrative.... more>> I felt everything when reading about how characters interacted in the story - anger, pity, frustration, disbelief etc. I applaud the author for writing a novel so brazenly realistic. And I also thank the author for writing a novel that didn't continuously talk about the ML or MC's dashing good looks. That kinds stuff gets old real fast.

I look forward to the drama adaptation. <<less
