Legend has it that the world’s most formidable man Xu Shuangtze owned a cherished portrait of his deceased wife. But no one knew that on its back was another portrait of his arch rival who Xu Shuangtze had killed with his own hands.

Sixteen years ago, the Chief of Immortal Alliance’s Department of Discipline, Gong Wei, brought a blade with him on the Immortal Ascension Platform. His assassination of Xu Shuangtze failed and he was slain on the spot by the sword named No Way Out.

Sixteen years later, Gong Wei opened his eyes and found himself reborn in the body of a beautiful fool who even had to kneel down when talking to Lord Xu.

This was not the only disturbing thing for him.

Because of his ravishing good looks, remarkable power and status as well as his premature death in his previous life, he was now the beloved muse of countless writers. Books and stories featuring him as the main lead to all kinds of relationships were circulated far and wide. Even among the famous sects there were rumours of his forbidden encounters with every sect leader…

the story is nice. It kind of feels like reading tgcf and mdzs together. The plot is fast paced too which I like. Let's wait and see how the story develops.

This is really a gem. I really want to read raw novel but cannot find it. The couple personality reminds me if lan zhan and wang xian but the story is different.

This is more of a 3.5, cause I did enjoy the read, but I rounded it down to 3 because of the issue is clarity of events and a whole bunch of Deus Ex Machina in the last battle that made both my eyes and neck roll.

The good first:

The story had clever moments and heartwarming moments written in. The growth of the MC from someone who 'loves the world' to someone who 'loves the world and its humans' was very endearing and he learns it through his experiences and losses.... more>> And I especially love the two sides mirror and how they each reflect (and magnify) the good and bad of humanity. That whole thing was a solid star out of the 3 stars I'm giving this. I can tell the author spent a lot of time crafting the characters out of love. But she does give love to some more than others.

Everything else:

The characters were cute and I grew very fond of all of them by the end. It's just there were so many ships with one-sided pining yandere, and each of them drive the plot forward to a certain extent. By the end, it felt way overused.

Spoiler

Artefact Master's Brother Du something x Bai Yan, Ghost Prince x Xuan Juanzhe, couldn't there be a functional couple, maybe one to show Gong Wei what romantic love could look like since he clearly experiences familial love and friendship in many lives. And why are the non-functional relationships the ones that move the plot forward in the name of 'im tired of the guy abusing me, let me be the catalyst of events' (both Bai Yan and Yuan Juanzhe) or 'i love this person that I'm killing so much so I need you to do/get this for me so that I can save them but by doing the thing, you're gonna really cause major problems' (both Du guy and Ghost Prince)

[collapse]

The plot on a high level I really I enjoyed. It is very much a great example of unreliable narration which makes for some fun uncovering of the true story but by the big BIG reveal, there were already 3 other big reveals that it felt like an SNL skit, dramatic music included. And at one point if it weren't for the author's note I wouldn't even understand what was revealed!

And the big fight scenes were so confusing, I couldn't tell what was happening, who was doing what, and more importantly why they were doing what they were doing. And during the moments where you think someone is going to take a fatal injury or a loss, nope, someone else leveled up while you weren't looking and saves the day. Or they healed up enough while you weren't looking and saves the day.

And that people who were supposed to be smart/badass/clever sometimes slip up to make the ML look cooler.

Spoiler

But my biggest gripe is why did none of the other deities help out when literally the world was burning AND the Ghost Prince was releasing all the souls. They held council to hold Ying Kai accountable and to send Ghost Prince a teacher. Where did that council go when Ghost Prince was f*cking sh*t up?

[collapse]

Overall, take this as a light read and if you're invested within the first 10 chapters, you'll enjoy the journey all the way through. It's a pretty short read compared to a lot of novels out there and the translations are great! <<less

This is a xianxia or xuanhuan novel with the main character being 'reborn' after he died 16 years ago and lots of mysteries about his death and current state of things. He has a stoic nemesis who is actually his love interest (slightly similar tropes to Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation).

The usual tropes about cultivation, evil/good, the Dao, etc are all here in this one. This is a very melodramatic (dogblood) book and the beginning was VERY intriguing because it wasn't a traditional transmigration/rebirth novel. The mystery of the strange events... more>> and plot twists are very fun to unravel.

I have only read one of the author's other books, Breaking Through the Clouds, which is probably her most famous one and it is very different from this book. The only similarity is the rather labyrinthian plot. However, once the truth was unveiled, my interest dwindled a bit because it was mostly about beating the villain. I think that in the hands of someone like Shui Qian Cheng, the melodrama of the whole story who have been utilized for maximum angst effect lol.

Still, it was fun to read this because I was in the mood for melodrama and xuanhuan stuff. <<less

Writing characters must not be author's strong point. MC's personality is muddled and inconsistent. ML yo-yos between unhinged yandere, unfeeling BASTARD and BULLY. He repeatedly takes advantage of MC, might I add, borderline

puncturing his eye and wanting to imprison him in a building he built for that sole purpose?

who owes him nothing. Practically 90% of the cultivation world fearing him like the capricious tyrant he is should be blaring sirens and red lights.

The plot is not bad, it's unpredictable. Written like an AU of a certain BL though.

Author likes to pull so many twists. Anyways, the true events are still blurry. No one is a reliable narrator due to the revelation in the recent update. Scenes are funny, interesting plot, and I'm so weak for the "everyone think they're enemies but actually they like each other" trope. Please recommend me some if you know similar novels. Thank you.

Gong "Poisonous Tongue that pits himself and others" Wei must have offended the heaven in his past life (at this point of revelation, he must have and it was no... more>> wonder that he keeps on making it worse). It was a bit pitiful to be honest, he started to like Xu Shuangtze and was actually meaning to express it but his lack of common sense and actions that freely gives that kind of affection to everyone makes one (ahem, Shuangtze) misunderstand. Chill, absolute, chills with how ready he was in taking lives and besmirching corpses (EVEN IF IT WAS HIS OWN, LIKE WEIWEI PLEASE TREASURE IT EVEN ID IT WAS ONLY A FLESH TO YOU).

Xu Shuangtze kind of come off as a bully. It was endearing in the present (because you can think of it as a payback for the attempt of Gong Wei on his life and not telling him the truth now) but in their past, it was kind of off-putting. I'm feeling complicated still.

Holding off judgement because their full real history of the events is not yet revealed. <<less

I'm going to withhold my rating (3?) because I think I was looking for a different story than the one I got and that has biased my review. This book is well written in terms of an intricate plot. Also, if you're a fan of action, jump in, because there's a huge amount of action in this novel. And for me, that was a problem, because I didn't think the writer gave enough pauses in between all those battles and threats to allow the reader enough space to fall deeply... more>> into the book and the characters. Shrug. Though it's possible that I'm not in the right frame of mind to enjoy an action heavy novel. So, I'm withholding the rating. <<less
