When starting a new novel I make sure to read a fair way into the story before deciding whether to continue reading to the end or not. I do this to allow the story to develop and to allow the author to find his/her rhythm. I have currently read up to chapter 289 of this novel and will continue no further.

There a far too many problems with this novel to make it an enjoyable read. I am not going to list all of the things that are wrong with this... more>> novel because most of them have already been covered in other comments. However, I do want to point out one major problem with this novel that others have not addressed yet.

s*xual assault...

This novel is full of s*xual assault, r*pe and borderline necrophilia. It's disgusting and unnecessary. The author of this novel must have some very deep issues and is clearly a s*xual deviant. The novel is tr*sh, the author is tr*sh and anybody that enjoys reading this is also tr*sh. Sorry, not sorry ? <<less

Man I feel like the author forgot his own premises. The MC is supposed to be the first guy under the saint rank realm. But he was constantly surprised by even the smallest things like half broken treasure. Dude is the strongest cultivator in his previous life but he was sweating when he meet an expert who only exert 30% of her aura and thought to himself 'there were so many masters in this world'. Lmao is chinese author incapable of using his brain when writing a story or what?... more>> I was facepalming hard when I read this line. Also MC is famous for being an idiot his entire life and only showed a bit of improvement in behaviour (only behaviour, his dad didnt know he also started cultivating) very recently as in just a few days, but his dad granted him thousand of soldiers to eradicate a man whom even his own dad not sure of defeating. And to make it even more hilarious, MC brought hundreds of soldiers and hid another couple of hundred of soldiers inside the birthday carriage. I thought to myself 'oh nice here is an MC who uses tactic and strategy to defeat an opponent much stronger than himself'. I was waiting for a nice hidden move from MC. But f*cken nope. The enemy is killed by a hidden cultivator. So what was the point of these supposed tactics, hiding soldiers and only brought very few soldiers with him? Nothing. Just a random sh*t the author throw at us readers and we are to take it as a very genious tactic. ROFL. <<less

I am not sure, how this series got a greater than 4 star rating. Simply because after a while the story stops making any sense.

During the start, I was fairly intrigued. Although the start was still cliche, it was interesting. But after a 15 or so chapters, you can only ask yourself, " Who the hell is this MC? Did the author misplace him while writing or something?"

The MC, is supposed to be the strongest cultivator alive in his previous life. At the same time he was the patriarch of... more>> some great sect. But as said in above reviews, after chapter 16-17, you can only see his s*upid character. The way he talks, thinks, does, all remind me of s*upid JP LN, where the author tries hard to make it sound funny, but fails miserably.

Another point is, the side characters. Except the girl who is trying to kill him, all others seem shallow. Well this is not a big problem, since nearly all Xianxia's are same.

Another and the final point, is the story itself. Till now I havent found anything, to make you stick to the story or continue reading. Its more like an after thought in your reading list. Its like, " Oh, this series is also there, but nevrmind it can wait more" something like that.

The only great point is the translator.T he translating speed is great. At the sam stone they are not losing out in quality. So hats off to the translators.

My suggestion will be to go for Emperor Domination instead. Its by the same translating group, and several times better than this series, while following a similar story line. <<less

The novel is just starting, but has already made big waves in the story. The first few chapters are very vague and the MC was a little shallow. But, just a few few chapters in and the story takes an abrupt turn towards a better direction WITHOUT all the tr*sh talk and arrogant people in it. I'm loving the story so far.

Something that could have been good, but just wasn't. All of the main girls are mentally unstable, also doesn't help that MC is terrible at managing them and can be a bit of a douche. For a reincarnated MC he is pretty s*upid as well (well, there's an explanation for that but it comes a lot later and leaves you frustrated for 80% of the story with the MC's lack of knowledge considering he should know more).

Also, MC can just be plain ret*rd sometimes.

Spoiler

More than once he blatantly shows off a treasure valuable enough to make people come and steal it in the middle of a crowd.

For example he has a special eye art which let him see a valuable object which looked like a regular stone and bought it cheap from a street peddler. You'd think he'd silently pocket it then check it out later when there's nobody else around, riiight?

WRONG. He shows it off in the middle of the f*cking street, brings in a crowd of people coveting it, and ends up getting it stolen by someone way stronger than him. Jesus Christ I wished I could worm my way into the novel world just to kill the MC for how big of a dumbass he is.

[collapse]

The novel can be interesting at parts, but overall the negatives outweigh the positives in my opinion. Not worth reading unless you have nothing better to read, it can still pass the time if you're desperate. <<less

I properly read the novel until chapter 30 or so and from there I skimmed the novel until the latest translated release. If you want to read something with content go to read a different novel for now. This novel may or may not pick up at the later chapters but for now there's nothing much to read.

My thoughts (contains slight spoilers) :
Spoiler

1) Similar to the novel World of Immortals in a sense that the story revolves around a woman making trouble for the MC. After 30 chapters or so, there will be a woman making trouble for the MC until the latest released chapter. The woman making trouble for the MC will change over time.

2) The MC gets pushed around a lot with barely a chance to fight back. The MC fights with people a lot and he fights people who have a strong backing (i.e. Core sect members, direct clan members, and etc.). The problem is in the first few chapters he gains strength to be able to fight people in his area. But at the later chapters he still fights people with strong backing but there's barely a moment when he can enhance his strength and when he does there even stronger people wanting to kill the MC.

3) The MC is a reincarnated patriarch of the demon phoenix clan but his worldly knowledge isn't much. I sort of understand if not everything of his knowledge is useful since he might be transported to another world but there should be at least something that he learned, when he was a patriarch, that he can use to help him in times. Aside from some knowledge items that are precious (plants, ores, etc., he finds but rarely happens) and his knowledge about formations (which he uses for a few times. I mean come on you have knowledge about formations why not make it useful and make one to kill people especially when using it as a trap) almost everything he finds is a mystery to him. I was expecting like Emperor's Domination, Dragon Marked War God, Great Demon King but nope.

4) Will compile chapters until chapter 500. Then we'll see if there's a change.

[collapse]
TL;DR of my thoughts
1) Women problems like in world of immortals.
2) Barely able to fight back until chapter 150 or something.
3) Not the same type of reincarnated knowledge as Emperor's Domination, Dragon Marked War God, and Great Demon King.
4) Will compile unti chapter 500 to see if there's change in the story. <<less

Entirely too random. Pretty much everything that happens after the birthday party scene was just... Eh.

Every character overreacts to everything in every way possible. The main character keeps saying he's ruthless and won't go easy on women, but he constantly leaves people with deep grudges against him alive, and he constantly goes easy on women (because they're women, and no other reason). In fact, every interaction the main character has with women will likely leave you wanting to stab something.

The plot is extremely inconsistent, as well. It moves fast,... more>> but at the cost of being extremely luck-driven. While most xianxia characters can't take a stroll down the street without tripping over priceless treasures, stunning beauties, or some kind of cartoonish villain... This story is just one long string of random events happening one after another. MC just HAPPENS to be in the right place at the right time, or the wrong place at the right time, time and again. While I criticize a lot of novels for being too slow, this one could stand to slow down and build up the characters a little along the way.

So far, it feels like the author is trying to introduce all the plot threads one by one, then send them off somewhere to wait their turn to be developed. It's the same for characters. Unfortunately, there's no real guarantee after 83 chapters that any of the plot threads or character will ever show up again, and since the bad stuff that happens to MC is mostly directly or indirectly his fault, it's hard to feel anything for him, except maybe disgust. Maybe it gets good "eventually", but it's up to you if you want to wait 150 chapters or so for that to happen. <<less

The translation of this novel is good. Translators are doing a commendable job. The narrative of the story is also good. In fact, it is engaging. However, the base of the story is what makes this novel disappointing. If you want to enjoy the novel, don't read the prologue or just disregard the *ancient phoenix* thoughts.

Just think of the character as someone who was originally a phoenix fledgling who was about to transcend and was struck by a lovely lady he had a crush on. Then, the story will actually... more>> have a nice flow. It will give reason why the character acts spoiled, immature and guillible. Also, having a bit of resentment to women but still easily swayed and affected. This is my advise to whoever will read because like I said, the narrative is good that is why it is enticing but with how far the base of the story is, makes it disappointing and the actions of the main character-annoying. <<less

To be honest I don't know what to say about this novel.

It is highly rated among the native chinese readers so there's got to be something to the novel but I just can't see it, for now. The writing is littered with jarring flaws, inconsistencies & plot holes, incoherent plot progression, character contradictions and a lot of repetitiveness. In short, the novel is chaotic and a mess. Half the time readers will be confused. If feels just like bad writing. That being said, I feel it is too early to... more>> judge, as seen from other reviewers who read quite far in, these issues will somehow or another sort themselves out. I've only read about less than 1/4 of the novel so this review is kinda unfair to the novel.

What I do like about SV is that the plot progresses at a reasonably fast pace, leaving no room for mundane fillers & subplots. Moreover the backstory and the lore in the novel did pique my interest, author did a commendable job crafting this fictional universe. I'll admit, despite how dismayed I am with the messy writing, I did find myself drawn to the story, it engages the readers.

Anyways, i'd say give this novel a try but stay open minded. It has its strengths believe it or not and the storyline is quite an enjoyable read. <<less

I still can't believe people who go through the effort of translating, but can't take the time to edit the result. The translator does not use quotes for dialog, rather begins the line with a dash. Frequent grammar mistakes on top of an average story made this unreadable for me. YMMV.

EDIT:
Ok, on the advice of others I gave this another shot. The 'speaking dash' goes away eventually, and the grammar improved, which made the storyline much more accessible. On the downside, there's a plot whiplash at around ch20 that... more>> broke immersion, and reduced my empathy and tolerance for the author, story, and main characters to below-enjoyable levels. The premise, remember, is a a soul-possession reincarnation of a Betrayed Supreme Being - and I cannot connect the MC with any part of that backstory anymore. The MC completely comes across as a slightly-dumb child bragging he's a genius, supported exclusively by the wishes of the plot (basically a perfect chinese chuuni), which grates on the nerves almost immediately.. The caricature characterizations of the rest of the roles put an bland topping on a no-longer-unappetizing cake. Unappetizing cake. <<less

Don't want to flame the translater OR the author cause this might be the type of Novels they like but this might be just not for me I guess cause I really cringed at MC's character and NO I didn't expect some God because its a reincarnation Novel, neither did I expect someone with some kind of Emperor's 'aura' but MC is behaving like a 10 year old and I really dislike such Novels.

This story is complete tr*sh for most of the 1st 100 chapters. The MC acts an idiot most of the time. Most of the interaction of the MC and the harem girls frustrates you most of the time especially the interaction with the main heroine. The author makes you hate the girls but then him & the MC forgive them. It is so frustrating that you will drop it in the intial 100 chapters. The plot is good but the author messes that up a lot. The story is filled with and runs on the tragedies of men falling for beautiful girls who usually either for their personal gain/greed backstab or betray those poor males.

Only after chapter 100 does the story stablise a little and then the story slightly... more>> becomes better chapter by chapter. The author covers up a lot of the plotholes in the previous chapters during this time. Still the MC's idiocy doesn't change and still appears now and then. There is a better plot and story in these chapters.

Maybe it will improve more later on? Who knows?

It is okay for reading when you got nothing else to read. There is no other story to read. This story will give you the belief that MC will die by a girls hand again. <<less

Two and a half stars. Giving it 3 because the translators deserve more, but if I made it higher it would be misleading.

I like the world a lot (especially the way it uses Buddhist lore -- I was never a huge fan until this) and there are parts where it's really enjoyable. I'm also a sucker for the "MC is extremely powerful but is betrayed by his lover, and now he's got to claw his way back up to get revenge" kind of story.

BUT FENG FEIYUN IS SO INCONSISTENT IT... more>> HURTS.

His personality is all over the place, and from time to time he just does something that makes your blood pressure rise. There's one bit where he comes into an ENORMOUS sum of money by taking advantage of a misunderstanding, and then he starts blowing it all by bidding for a night with fancy prostit**es!!! Never mind that cultivation resources are s*upidly expensive in this world, and he should be buying them to get stronger because half of the nation wants to kill him!

To put it simply, this series has ups and downs. The ups are great -- there are some really interesting arcs and some parts are pretty funny -- but the downs are awful. Sometimes it's obvious the author is trying to be funny but is just ruining the story. Other times you're just left wondering WTF the author was thinking. Feng Feiyun's personality changes repeatedly and his IQ rises and plunges (hard) on a regular basis. He'll also be a decent person one minute and then suddenly be an annoying as*hole the next... like one scene where some bandits he's with capture and chain up a bunch of innocent people as s*aves and Feng Feiyun is excited about it because he feels like a rich young master with them walking behind his carriage. <<less

I would like to say to all the people who gave bad reviews to please stop. I agree with the translator that this story at least so far hasn't become a wishfufillment xianxia like other stories but has its own qualities. It is said in the early chapters that he didn't interact with the outside world and only worked in secluded cultivation. From how I see it, phoenixes are practically immortals in their own right, thus even without the special cultivation of his, he is a long lived race. Thus... more>> the period of growing must be proportionately raised. For example the elves in LOTR mature in 50~100 years.

Being so I see the Feng Feiyun as a teen, mature enough to know the world but still naive and guilble. From how I see the betrayal, it is more like a break up. He may want revenge but it doesn't consume his entire being. So all the people complaining about his s*upidity or naivety can stop. As a side note, there aren't s*upid useless Perfection Jade Beauties or Celestial Ice Queens but females that can actually fight, instead of being damsels.

I'm tired of reading stories where the MC does every single damned thing. The character who were praised as top grade sect younger generation beauty seems to be useless. Why promote her as a top grade talent if she needs saving every 200 chapters. ATG I'm looking at you. Or raises beauties as maids but still having to fight every major battle basically by himself because their supreme immortal physique doesn't seem supreme at all, the just seemed to me like treasured pets to be put on display to show every so often. ED I'm looking at you. <<less

Criminally underrated, but I'll admit that you're required to go into the book with the mindset that he is not ACTUALLY a reincarnated expert, despite what the author is telling you.

There are a few annoying instances where his character feels inconsistent because of this, but once you come to terms with it, the book is great in pretty much every aspect. Hundreds of times better than almost any cultivation novel I've ever read.

The world building is fantastic. It truly feels like a mysterious cultivation universe where incomprehensible things can happen.... more>> I've never found myself knowing the answer to the conflicts Feiyun experiences despite myself being a mortal and obviously not comprehending the "heavenly dao" (lma0). I've read a lot of books where the author creates situations which are "so mysterious" and "life threatening" but the reader knows the answer already despite the world supposedly being grand and endless, and it takes the MC a chapter or two to figure it out himself.

The character are even better. Cultivation novels where the top geniuses or the important characters of the top powers are either a.) arrogant and s*upid b.) shortsighted c.) all male or d.) all of the above are so damn old by now. Everybody feels real, the conflicts between the major powers are actually complex, and the women are not useless dainty flowers, the perfect Chinese archetype of "gentle and obedient wives". Related to the women, the main character is not pretentious and holier-than-thou in how he deals with them, unlike pretty much every other novel I've read. He's consistent, pretty immoral in that he regularly indulges in r*pe and using women to get what we wants despite being a "good guy", but the author wrote his character and stuck with it while still fitting in development, which can't be said for many. I think even better is his relationship with other male characters. Their friendships were truly built up from nothing, or even enemies at first, totally naturally, and their interactions are both amusing and realistic. I've never liked the "sworn brothers" that have done one nice thing for the MC in any other book that are suddenly the best friend and then you get dialogue between them every 20 chapters (at best).

The story, related to the world building, is also sufficiently entertaining. The character is fit in and squeezed between the war of the main powers that seems so much bigger than him, but he's actually proactive in his plans to make it out on top despite his weakness (another gripe of mine with other novels). There's still a lot of mystery to the overarching story, so I won't say much about it, but it keeps you hooked.

Fights are good. Cultivation system is detailed and well described, clearly thought out, and well varied among the different characters/sects. One downside is that the MC feels unnaturally weak in some fights, as things like his experience and "mastery over the heavenly dao" are rarely, if ever, mentioned and only in scenes without direct combat. However, the author gives an explanation for this (somewhere around ch300?), and although it left me slightly disgruntled, it was still at least explained.

Overall, 4/5 book and I wish I had discovered it after it was translated completely (thanks Bao). <<less

You know when the author creates this exceptional plot twist, and centres the whole story around this one event?

... That's what's going on here. Until you get to the 'reveal', this story is utterly disappointing. Inconsistent protagonist, whom more often then not doesn't seem to follow established characterisation at all. What will it be mistrust, or lust? What will it be, fame, or infamy? For God's sake author, there's something called characterisation, if a protagonist changes radically there NEEDS TO BE A REASON.

Readable if the whole premise of the story is ignored.

Well, you have the other reviews, we know how much of a moron the MC is. The excuses the author seemingly makes about demon blood this, fused soul that just doesn't explain even half of the idiotic things he does. I'm also really not a fan of foolish MCs that forgive people for no good reason and give everyone more than one chance, who doesn't want to kill if he can help it and can't understand that letting backstabbing b*tches go will not make things better and will instead show... more>> that you're an easily exploited ret*rd doormat that can be further exploited (unless the author wants to force things and bend his own story so that it magically works out, which shouldn't happen).

The things about backstabbing and being mistreated by girls makes me wonder if the author is a masochist or if he has had personal experiences regarding being dumped all the time, something which wouldn't surprise me. Clearly, something is going on that makes him write such cringey sh*t.

Well, maybe you like foolish/ignorant japanese doormat mcs, then this could be a perfect fusion of the chinese world and the japanese world just for you :D Just because I didn't like it doesn't mean no one else can't like it either. I find this MC to be forced, unnatural and way too s*upid, but some people clearly find him to be natural because of the same reasons. <<less

Every review says that why doesn't Feng Feiyun act like thousand year sect leader. Isn't the answer already given in the novel. The author says that his soul merged with a 17 year old douchebag and not replaced it. So its highly appropriate for Feng Feiyun to act like this. And sometimes he does irrational things because of his demon blood.

This novel is one of the best novel I read. It would take place in my top 5 if I have to rank it. This novel isn't your typical cultivation... more>> novel. One thing I love most about the novel is that the females in the novel doesn't stick to the MC and they have their own thoughts and some are stronger than the MC. And the harem doesn't feel forced.
