“This world is actually an otome game.”

On a certain day, Shiori was told an outrageous fact by her cousin, Kazuto. It turns out he has memories of his past life and his little sister then had played this certain otome game. The heroine in the game would capture hot-looking guys one after another in the school Shiori’s attending. And it turns out Kazuto was one of the capture targets! He asks Shiori to stop the heroine from capturing him.

From then on, Shiori runs left and right in the academy since the very first day, searching for the heroine’s whereabouts and her next movement. However, it seems Shiori is also triggering events one after another just like the heroine…!?

Best slice of life, otome game based novel I've ever read. MC is inspiring, she is realistic and tries to do her best in performing her responsibilities. She's not a Mary Sue, but she's good at what she does and she has a certain girly charm to her personality that attracts me (refreshing my taste after seeing so many half-assed "badass" MC being plain rude). Basically she's the type I strive to be and wish to have as a friend.

10 out of 10 would recommend! If you have any doubts about reading this, just trust me and I guarantee you won't regret it. Our beloved MC is just so cool, she might be on the dense side but she doesn't come off as dumb or s*upid at all. The translation is great and the whole story itself is just so entertaining and lovely to read.

If I were to complain about one thing tho is that there are a lot of capture targets so it does get a lil confusing... more>> sometimes, but with a little bit of backtracking remembering who they are isn't really a problem!! Anyways, if you have any spare time, please do check this out!! <<less

The main character's thoughts and interactions with her cousin are hilarious! It seems interesting so far!

Spoiler

So I'm guessing she'll end up with Kazu-nii?

This novel was an absolute gem, in terms of both character development, MC personality, a good balance of show vs tell, and translating quality. The MC was generally cool and collected, and she was able to navigate troublesome situations with her own mental and physical power in many cases, no overbearing male prince required. The story was definitely on the slower side, so this novel is more for casual readers who want to see daily life interactions. I also love how the author finally had characters talk to each other... more>> about their misgivings, instead of wondering "this is strange" and never bothering to share their concerns with others.

Spoiler

The MC has several of the male leads come together to discuss the gem stones and their meaning. She also discusses with the relevant parties about the miasma, her misgivings about the church, and so many more times. Events really get resolved faster with fewer misunderstandings if people just talk it out.

The novel was IMO kinda terrible regarding the actual romance, but since this novel was more a slice of life and mystery with a tiny focus on romance I felt it only detracted one star from the overall reading experience.

Spoiler
  • The MC's cousin is ten years older than her. He apparently feel in love with her when she was an elementary schooler and he was a high schooler/University student. The author really seems to push this romance for the MC, but IMO the cousin's predatory tactics really feel creepy when they come out.
  • The heroine was a really hardworking and good girl at heart, albeit just a little confused, but the author seemed to waver a lot between portraying her as a villain or as a fan girl. This split commenter perspectives on her heavily, and I think the heroine for more flak then she deserved.
  • The MC's romance basically resolved around guys mustering the courage to confess before getting interrupted. I might get it once or twice, but when it happens a dozen or so times I began to get annoyed with how the author is forcibly keeping the MC dense. You know, real life conversations can carry on after someone gets a phone call, or you can ask someone on a date even after one party waves goodbye to a friend in the distance. But the author seems to force four different guys to p**syfoot around just asking the MC out or confessing to her, which felt unnecessary to an otherwise great novel.

I wanted to rate this lower, but I wouldn't because in the end I actually enjoyed this. Is this what the reviews say is one of the best?? So should I just lose hope if that's the highest standard for what is best?? :/ Anyways I recommend reading this despite what I would say. It was fun while it lasted. I will continue reading after chapter47 but I'm just getting too annoyed and bored.

Note this has spoilers. Don't read further if you don't want spoilers!!

The MC's Shiori character is cool and... more>> supposedly uncaring.. Excessively so. She's also very passive and doesn't actively stop things unless it's about her cousin. That cousin Kazunii also can't literally say no to any high school girl even if that means the female lead gets what she wants. He can only ask help from his cousin, our MC.

The female lead, Maria.. Is obsessed with getting all targets. She's obsessed with having a harem. Do their feelings matter? No. Does anything else matter? No. Does it matter if she mind controls them? (Implied to happen) Also no.

Now being obsessed doesn't necessarily mean the person is bad.. But it could be dangerous and harmful to both themselves and whoever they're after/into. But our oblivious MC doesn't care. Even after she gets to know the male leads and about all this, she doesn't stop Maria. She lets her do whatever she wants. We also get to know how Maria is the most beautiful, cutest, most angelic, deserving girl in the world every chapter.. Rejoice. Even Shiori the MC can't stop complimenting her ugh.

______________________

God there's so much problems in this novel I don't know where to begin!!

The novel seems to be heading towards the in*est route. Yep, with her cousin. The teacher. The adult. The relative. Who also apparently keeps harassing and licking the MC left and right. I was fine with him in the beginning even if it said he was the cousin, but the more it progressed the worse it got.

The best male lead would be Katsuragi. He's kind, protective and has the best attitude towards her.. Even better than her pe*vert cousin lol. Sadly Shiori is a cool stone. So far as of chapter 47 she has zero romantic emotions for anyone, other than maybe minor feelings for her cousin even if she doesn't realize it yet.

Anyways so far I've been really frustrated. Yes Shiori the MC is coolheaded and doesn't actively antagonize Maria (the female lead) but that doesn't mean it's all good. Maria is going the dangerous route and so far Shiori is cool about it. I'm tired and bored of this. I'll continue to read s bit. Hopefully it changes.

But people exaggerate with how high rated this is. It's okay. It's good to read. But definitely not the best, I hope. This is about Maria, as implied many times.. While Shiori happens to be in the background everytime stalking her. She doesn't stop anything, just watches and accidentally gets into Maria's scenarios/events. <<less

If I had to describe MC (Shiori) in one word that word would be chill. Her inner commentary is funny and she seems like a person that most people would really like in real life. She's cool but she's not the edgy OP and kinda insufferable cool. She's smart and good at decision making plus she understands good communication. She has no knowledge about any past life or the game firsthand and doesn't intend to participate aside from helping her cousin out. She's more amused about the situation than anything.... more>> I like her a lot.

The story truly is otome/slice of life so it moves at a leisurely pace. However it's still fun to read.

Okay now for the male characters and the heroine.

Spoiler

1. Kazuto (Kazu-nii) Who asks for MC's help because he doesn't want to be pegged as a lolicon or lose his job as he is actually a pretty decent teacher who cares about his job. He's lowkey a huge siscon for MC though. She doesn't notice though and is a bit dense about it though that's not an unreasonable response.

2. Huge cast of game MLs. Each named for days of the week with special otoge niches. Like frivolous man, student council senpai, angel, childhood friend... etc. Some are taken with the heroine and some are more indifferent (Katsuragi for example). Shiori sometimes accidentally triggers flags while helping Kazuto. Some are more interesting or likable than others but none of them are hateable or annoying or idiots.

3. Heroine and sidekick. Heroine chan knows about the game scenario and wants the reverse harem end so she's working hard to trigger the events as much as she can. It's more that she likes them as game characters for capture/fangirling than actual affection. Kind of makes her a bad person LOL. In that sense she's like "that thot the heroine" from other stories but since MC isn't the villainess, heroine chan isn't concerned with her. Aside from trying to reverse harem a bunch of guys she doesn't really do anything to anyone. Her friend is equally boy crazy and mildly unlikable. I don't hate them and find it nice that they aren't malicious towards other girls, but yeah... They can be kind of annoying.

I read a comment saying this is a hidden gem and I wholeheartedly agree. This novel is a must. Judging from the cover n synopsis I never thought this novel would be so good. I know some novel start off really good but as the series continue it kind of becomes boring or bad and I really really hope this Novel will continue being this good.

Also in my opinion translator-san played an important role here, I think the translation helped the novel become pleasant to read and be really really... more>> nice. U have my respect for ur translation translater-san. I hope u wont drop this translation n continue translating this novel. ♡♡ <<less

Seriously love the story! A different take to an otome tensei story!

It' s refreshing and at the same time very entertaining. I must say, I like MCs like Shiori who isn't really OP but at the same time, has her own good points. She has her head on her shoulders and proper reactions to most ofsthe situations so far.

Spoiler

I just want her to end up with someone other than anyone blood related to her. If Kazuto isn't blood-related, then I'm in that ship! But I also like Katsuragi... ohhh what should I do!!!

It was a short but very fun novel! I enjoyed this more than I thought. Our heroine Shiori was relatable and realistic. Though very dense (she’s cute). She has to spy and make sure the og heroine doesn’t fall in love with her cousin who’s a capture target and happens to remember his last life. The story had a lot more mystery than I thought and not quite romance oriented.I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
Spoiler

[Major Spoilers] Some part in the middle I though for a second her cousin (Kazuto) was the ML or something 😅 and was likeeee okay? But it’s not cuz it ended with a soft note with no one ending up with her, a very happy ending. Did I also mention she’s dense? There’s also a lot of doki doki moments too (other capture targets and kazuto) my heart stopped at those scenes.

I like these type of novels so I wish there was more of them (*≧∀≦*)

As I am writing this review, I am not sure how I feel about the 'final pairings.' With the characters only having been experiencing a short period of high school life, it is clear that their final destinations will be further in the future. I know this but it is still a bit of a mixed feeling having a romance novel ending with few actual relationships established. The story has its highs and its lows in terms of satisfying the audience with what the fans theorized compared to the final... more>> draft. Almost as though the final volume came up surprisingly fast. The original heroine never truly became a character for me much like a few of the capture targets as there was too much to do to make these characters memorable. If it was not for the romance angle of the story, I do not think I would have remembered more than half of the characters in this story. I am not saying it is a bad story, just that it needed more hands on deck to properly manage the story. I am giving four stars on account of the great main character in terms of reliability as well as the wonderful job on the translation team. I advise others to read this story but warn them that the end result will likely leave one wanting for something more. <<less

The monologue of the side characters is way too embarrassing.

as expected of the otome world but the MC is level-headed despite the cliche cringe situations that are happening around her.

I wanted to give it three stars but meh can't change it.

The story is well written, so reading it is fun except.

The female lead is OK but it's so... Her focus could be more solid at least.

... more>> The other girls would make you cringe... Like, are high-school in Japan like this?

So desperate?

It's bothersome, it's like the gender roles are swapped girls desperate for a guy and the guys trying to avoid/hide.

The fake female lead well by all that's holy just a simple smh.

Other than that the book is OK, a relaxing read. <<less

Very nice read, stays away from the cliches but still delivers on the fun of the reincarnated-in-an-otome-game genre. Nice to see one of these fully translated too - the translator did a great job!
