Little brother of "A step into the past", though latter is a wuxia, xianxia in this one is barely noticable as it focuses on political scheming and assasinations, not on shonen fights and power ups.

(51chaps for now so don't know if it will change much)

Currently at around chapter 460 (getting by with machine translation). Btw, the chapter count for this series is wrong. Haven’t done a solid count (the chapter numbering in the RAWs get reset every now and then), but at this point it’s still less than 1/3rd of the whole series

It’s a very unique Xianxia novel in that it doesn’t focus that much on the cultivation aspect compared to the political maneouvering of the various empire factions, the philosophies of the characters (and not just the MC), the interactions between people, etc.... more>>

Even at this chapter in the novel, you can count the number of times the MC has fought using the fingers on your hands. (That’s for martial arts battles tho; the MC gets into a lot of arguments / debates where he pretty much eviscerates his opponents each time :P)

I find the MC’s philosophy of “I don’t fight, I only kill” very interesting. He’ll only get into fights if he plans to kill, and he’ll go for lethal strikes if he does.

This makes for a fun scene where he basically gets thrashed in the early “training sessions” with his sister-in-law. All he knows is lethal combat so he has to control his battle instincts as it’s a family member. He ends up sore each time with his sister-in-law happy for beating up a lecher / debauchee. It’s only his army veteran uncle that finally gets to notice that in one training session, she would have died nearly a 100 times if Moye didn’t pull back, causing chills down his spine

The characters are really fleshed out; the writing style, while wordy, is good-great; you’d never know from the serious tone it has most of the time, but there are more than just a couple of LOL moments in there too.

All in all, very much recommended if you’re tired of the usual power-up/beat-em-up progression most xianxias have.

[UPDATE] Have since passed the 1/2 mark, nearing 2/3rds of the novel. Unfortunately, the philosophical discussions have lost a bit of their charm, especially if the same topic is hit over and over again. Also, I find the power progression too jerky; the MC doesn't power up gradually, he does so in batches of 4 or more levels. Weirdly enough, I liked the novel more when the MC was living the city life, instead of out in the wild and having more confrontations. Would downgrade my rating to 4 stars if I could <<less

If you complain for the lack of fighting at the start you aren't really reading the story, you are just someone that reads xianxia for the quick rush of the exchanges of fists. That isn't what xianxia is all about. The MC has barely fought and yet the story has been able to set up a solid plot and matains excitement. If you don't like this story crawl back under your rock.

so ill give it 5 stars and hope the novel goes on to be the same 5 star worthy xianxia as mostly all xianxias start god but become bad later on, but I do have high hopes for this xianxia + how badass is this line

Just two words, LOVE IT!! I don’t know what else to say but I definitely love the MC, he is just so freaking awesome! I don’t want to spoil anything and I might change my mind in the future when future chapters come along so... enjoy reading everyone.

Very interesting. It lacks some fights and therefore, you can’t really tell what level the MC reached so far in terms of cultivation or battle strength. Also, the MC doesn’t really focus much on cultivating. I hope this will change in the future because right now it doesn’t really feel like a Xianxia novel. Though, in another sense it makes it more interesting because it's different from the 'normal' Xianxia.

Until the chapter 25, I can say that it has been really good novel. The MC is smart, mysterious, and also has good sense of humor. It is different form the commun xianxia witch the MC get all OP and just kills everybody, it has some good plots!!

This novel is like a breath of fresh air.

No drama, no info dumping and no revenge.

It’s really funny and the MC is great. The number of chapters (24) is too less to give an opinion on the novel itself but I would still recommend it simply for having a great start.

Just read this. Less than 20 chapters and I’m already expecting a lot from this story. The settings of the story are rather common, but so far, the MC’s personality has been the most noteworthy for me.

It should not take long for a new reader to see if he likes this or not.
