Chaos spread once those words of God were displayed to the whole world.

Kurose Hikaru, whose childhood friend had been chosen, was killed together with her on the same day she was supposed to be transferred. Transferred without any preparations at all to that accursed land, he faced threats innumerable times and somehow managed to survive with his Gift, the Dark Spirit Abilities.

Worldbuilding is done really well, with a rather unique magic system. I especially enjoyed the forum chapters, as they are written in a way that makes you feel like you are one of those commentators, with comments that reflect what your actual thoughts are. Thoughts that go through my head when reading the MC pov chapters are reflected in the forums. Very realistic in that regard.

MC is off putting at first, as he goes through a phase of grieving and emo-ing. He 'hides in the darkness' and as a reader... more>> you can get quite frustrated at the MC's personality. But after some time, I understood this is not an OP!MC novel in a traditional sense. The MC is not emotionlessly chasing strength like in most modern KR novels, nor is he a h**ny otaku chasing skirts. He is written as a very real person,
Spoiler

with the exception of his unrealistically genius sisters

, and you find yourself rooting for him emotionally. Not rooting for him to become stronger and kill everyone, but for him to recover emotionally from the tragedy in his life.

Latest chapters that follows MC's childhood friend and sister's POV is really bland, and only slightly interesting, but the strength of the first 150 chapters is an easy four stars for me.

My advice would be to not go into this story with the expectation of a tropey isekai MC. Expect yourself to be disappointed with the MC's decisions, frustrated at his indecision, and then impressed with how the MC can subvert your expectations. <<less

This is a light reading which you are anticipating maybe 3 updates a week (though the translator is updating fast).
If you want a multi layered stories, this might not be suitable for you (at least until chapter 165)

At first, it is a pretty dark story, but around chapter 160, this becomes more romcom.

The MC really had it tough. Be put in all kind of misfortune.

Not ur typical jp novel, I would say this is one of top 5 jp I have read. The novel doesnt have many plot amor or s*upid characters, MC isnt a beta, have a reasonable mindset.

The plot and the thread discussing in this novel are really good even when I dont really like drama and stuff like sociaal media I still love it very much. The threads show that there is still a good portion of people in... more>> society that have a good brain not just a bunch of toxic prejudge s*upid people. <<less

This is an okay isekai OP MC with yandere harem. An interesting world (God creates isekai survival livestreams and bulletin boards for chat, isekai world with dungeons and great spirits and "Loved Ones") with interesting characters, but the delivery is often mediocre or wasted potential. But I enjoyed it very much as a guilty pleasure, which is why I actually finished reading all that was available. I recommend this a read if you're able to turn your brain off.

Cons:

  • Surprise Yandere: every female in his harem are seemingly retconned to be yandere. They would all die for him and want in his pants.
    Spoiler

Probably even his underaged sisters, as several times they explain Hikaru's resistance to his harem's s*xual advances is due to his sister's "training", which is explained later by the sisters themselves akin to grooming.

    [collapse]
  • Deus Ex Machina: other reviews mentioned this already. Classic tropes of absolute luck saving the day.
    Spoiler

Like arriving just in time to save the cat girl's life, or one of his harem's life. Like a key skill unlocking just the day before (or even in the middle of battle) just so the OP MC can use it to defeat the big bad. Or literally God's menu giving direct survival advice.

    [collapse]
Pro:

  • Bulletin Board messages is a great hype train for me. This is like reading YouTube/Twitch comments. It's mileage may vary depending on how you like that kind of stuff. It's also a great way for the author to do character development and world building outside of the main character perspectives.

Ok so where to start haha So the story is the generic isekai, but I rated it a 4 because nothing stood out to me that would turn me away.

What I mean is you just focus on the story and there is enough explanation of actions to at least help you keep your brain turned off. The first half was amazing but then I just felt like it trailed off (but not really?)

The main reason why Im writing this is the potential of the story that jUst never got... more>> realized and I feel like if the author wouldnt drag stuff out he could do more. I realize the story is short but there were so many details that its funny how little we actually explored.

EDIT: Now that I have read it and with the ending, the author admited that this is only the first half, but they will see if the second half will be written. There is still so much to do. For example the one thing that was their goal (of conquering the dungeon in their city) didnt get advanced at all. I think MC went alone to the start of floor 4 and the story finished with floor 4 being done. So there is still a lot to do in not just this department but they already planned out a move to a bigger dungeon. So the below review mostly targets the current WN chapters as a stand alone story.

Now all of this can just simply be dismissed with "the story is following the MC and there isnt really a reason for him to move/meet new people so thats why there is so little eplored". Which is fair, but this review is basically just me saying what elements I wished were added to not make the story so "shallow".
Spoiler

For example the biggest waste is the continent, the chosen and the spells.

Basically its the end of the sotry and we still dont know which abilities are good. For example "oh 50 people took heal spell, but they all died, but it should be good if you train it". Ill let this point kinda slide since its realistic, people died so you cant know if its good. But I do wish we would get some explanations of why it was worth 50 points (eternal youth is litteraly worth 15 points)

Another example is the continent. The continent is really big and there are multiple but the MC litteraly gets to the first city and stays there the whole story. So like coming from different stories where usually if they mention places, the story visits them at least once in a way.

And then theres the chosen. From the batch of 1000 chosen we met 4 and 1 is the MC, while we name dropped lets say 7? Yes we just ignored 99% of the characters and never even heard about them, much less interacted with them or had them in the story.

[collapse]

So first what I liked:

The first half of the story was amazing to me. The short world building with the like 3 chosen that were name dropped to set up the story a bit

Spoiler

Him getting a trauma and clear up the misunderstanding, yet teaming up with an unlikely partner to defeat the demon lord before parting due to their circumstances.

Up to here I really liked it and it even made sense to have him hate messages.

So since now the only person we know is going away and we did a big accomplishment in this city, what I thought was gonna happen is with the foundation of the current world building and introduced characters, we will explore some abilities, places or meet new people or something. But intead we get fishing and just walking around the city aimlessly.

[collapse]

That was like chapter 110 and then I just felt like nothing happened to current chapter (190) well not nothing but I feel like I can summarize it in like 3 to 4 sentences which for 80 chapters which in this case is a third of the story is dumb.

Spoiler

Basically in the last 80 chapters he met Jean which for some reason fell in love with him too.

Then Nanmi was revived and isekaid as part of the second group.

And the previous girl came back. I think her farewell was longer than she was gone, she litteraly came back in like a week which made the emotional good bye feel cheap.

So in the middle of the story we just cement that we dont need more characters, despite the second transfer giving 300 new chosen (so now we have 8 named people out 1300 chosen). And that we wont even be moving locations.

I dont know I just expected some elaboration considering how often the numbers are mentioned and size of the isekai world.

Story itself was decent, the worldbuilding was kinda standard, but fit the story, ending was ok, with the possibility of second part.

Overall average I would say. 3 stars.

However..

... more>> There were 2 point of contention for most people - bulletin board chapters and the MC being a beta/whimp.

For the bulletin board, at least I did not mind it, it gave more info and context of what was happening in the original world. Although it did ruin some emotional moments for no reason...

As for MC, he is very much japanese in his mentality, which by western standards is kinda beta, but what made it worse was the trauma and the depression he sank into (which was uncomfortably realistic btw). Forcing romance (and even harem) on top of that, made it feel really weird and not mesh well in some ways.

Spoiler

While the depression part resonated with me, forcing the MC stay that way until the very end made him seem kind of an idiot and even more beta in an unrealistic way.

The most frustrating was the very end, when MC was talking to the killer, and even with all he experienced and with all the information he had, for no f*cking reason, still doubted that the killer was lying, making all the development that happened before look completely wasted.

[collapse]

Shame that with just some minor tweaks it could have been much better. <<less

The Darkness was Comfortable for me is a light novel that had a strong beginning for me, but continued to fall off into an unending abyss until the abrupt ending smashes your already poor expectations all over the floor.

Kurose Hikaru as a main character is disappointing and I found this aspect to be the weakest link of the novel. I am a lover of a tragic backstory with the addition of character growth throughout the novel however, in The Darkness was Comfortable for me... there is no character development for... more>> the MC whatsoever; he experiences something traumatic and then never gets over it for the rest of the novel. You could argue that this aspect of the novel is realistic and that a lot of humans do not get over trauma but at the end of the day, this is a work of fiction and not real life. We want to root for the protagonist of the novel we're reading but it is hard to do that when we are stuck in first POV having to experience the same whining and insecurities over and over again with the MC seemingly having no interest in getting over his problems. The MC is someone who is mentally fragile, weak, naive and dumb and while I was rooting for him at the beginning (especially that forest arc at the beginning), he just turns into a one-trick pony and becomes a ghost that roams throughout the novel with little purpose in life.

The rest of the novel is not that good either: The worldbuilding is lackluster and we're trapped in a single city for the rest of the novel unless we are in someone else's POV that happens to be outside, the ending is abrupt and makes your experience reading this novel to be a waste of time. I do not have a problem with harem if they make sense but since this is your typical isekai harem, you can figure out the rest. I think my favorite aspect of the novel is the livestreaming and bulletin board. <<less

I will never understand authors who put a heavy emphasis on Chat groups or Bulletin Boards in their novels. Its not fun to read and does not advance the story in any way. Fortunately the Bulletin Board only appears in separate chapters so you can easily skip it which unfortunately also means you half the length of the novel.

Otherwise the story was pretty fun to read. It was pretty dark from time to time and the fights were done well. MC was likeable and the interactions with Party members were... more>> well written. Unfortunately this is a HAREM Story. Your average iseakai 3/5.

The story also stops before the MC is getting any notable strength so there will also be no going against god or anything like that.

The MC is so naive its incredible. The first few misunderstandings might actually happen like that but towards the end people will just make up absurd stories and MC will believe it. <<less

Overall this novel was a pretty enjoyable read.

The main character is pretty polarizing. You either like him or fkign hate him. I was on the side of this MC is a massive beta and I despise some of the actions he takes but I still root for him.

The story is basically misunderstandings on top of misunderstandings partially due to the trauma of the MC.

What surprised me and came out of left field was the ending. It ended so quickly when I thought the story was just beginning. Honestly this story... more>> deserves a 3/5 but I enjoyed it so I give it 4/5.

Light spoilers ahead:

Spoiler

I thought that after all the misunderstandings cleared up we would finally get to explore more of this isekai world. We would find out who god is. Why they did this and everything. But then it just ends. It leaves me feeling a bit blue balled.

[collapse]
You know what typing this out made me realize how sudden this ending feels and I'm dropping that 4/5 back to a 3/5. <<less

It has it's unique system of magic which is pretty good and the concept of live broadcasting isekai is fun. It's good enough for grabbing early attention for any successful novel. So it's good initially for at least 60 chapters.

After that he started to add cliche of isekai heroine but it is tolerable and we learn new things about world or magic system, so it keeps interesting. But on chapter 102 he did the obvious which everyone was even warning him in comments to stop. It's so disgusting cliche I... more>> hate it.

Spoiler

He was given a choice between resurrecting his childhood friend or saving his isekai girlfriend. It was even so sloppy because the MC even has the means to save her. But apparently God (which is just author insert) apparently forced that if he did that than I won't give you resurrect item. There was no real reason why God wouldn't give him that except forcing this cliche. I hate it.

[collapse]

If he had focused on these new elements and how they affect his life, it would be easily be a 3 for me. And if author somehow made these concepts tied to plot in meaningful way it would have been great 4-5 novel. But the author lacking his imagination try to use cliches just to keep writing because at least some people who are hooked will still keep reading.

Even I will at least skim some chapters to see what happened till the end but I still hate this novel.

EDIT: Later on although there are new cliche heroines and villains but they are kind of comedic relief and not serious. There is more exploration of the world and his powers which I liked. So it's okay to read but you may want to skip where there are cliche scenes.

Now at the end they are increasing the tension too much and using cliche for this.

Spoiler

It wouldn't be fair if he left the city before Nanami reached because if feels cliche. It would have been better if there is difference of like 1 month or they are distant but if you first make them close by and also hint that they are just going to meet but then you tore apart then it's cliche. It won't work. Its useless tension which people would rather skip.

[collapse]
Also the world is so good. Why can't author writer a proper plot? It would be interesting if there were plots explored about how dungeons were established, loved ones treated, some war? Whatever ocerarching plot. The story currently doesn't have any plot. So its just bare. <<less

I thoroughly enjoy this book. The pacing may seem slow at times but there's a lot to unpack in each chapter. It shows the dark side of humanity, group think, mob mentality, gaslighting, mental abuse, but also counteracts that with the genuine kindness of individuals. The characters get well developed personalities, the tension is built up well, small problems are solved nicely, but the underlying conflict keeps the story going. The switch of POV is actually fairly smooth and well done.

Spoiler

As for the genius sisters and Nanami - They've secretly manipulated and mentally traumatized Hikaru under the pretext of love, I am interested to see how this comes to light and I hope that Hikaru truly does come to terms with what has happened to him and overcomes his mental trauma. I believe that with the help of heroines around him (minus Nanami and sisters) it can be done.

[collapse]

I am looking forward to the further development of all the characters and to see where this dark and beautiful adventure goes <<less

Honestly, I'm getting tired of this novel. Every time something interesting or cool happens or the MC seems on the verge of a breakthrough in character development it all gets torn down or nullified.

It feels like the author is confused at how character growth occurs in a novel. You need to actually show the character OVERCOMING a trial or tribulation for there to actually BE growth. If you keep sending the character back into the same situation, over and over, then you've done nothing but waste the reader's time.

Spoilers up... more>> to and including Chapter 217:

Spoiler

So MC's mental state is basically back in the negatives thanks to his Isekouhai and the family drama and his own refusal to read Twitch chat. And now he's gonna get eaten again again. AND just when you think the MC does something really neat by stacking darkness so thick he accidentally creates a zone of elemental darkness and summons THE Great Dark Spirit to fight off the Great Water Spirit. Doesn't matter, Great Water Spirit can summon an Elemental too and have it chase the MC. Why would you build that hype moment with "Summon: Elemental" just to ruin it immediately? Why go through the whole "healing arc" with Jeanne and Rifreya and reviving Nanami just to throw it under the bus for cheap drama?

[collapse]

When is the MC, and this story, going to actually move forward? We've had two arcs now with the same basic story beats. It's ok for bad things to happen to characters in your story, often times it makes for some of the most compelling reading. But your characters actually need to overcome these adversities at some point or you end up with a stagnant story.

I'm gonna drop this for now and pick it back up after another 50 chapters or so come out. I like the little lore snippets we get here and there about this isekai world and I'm interested in where those plot threads are going. I'm not interested in reading about MC's mental breakdown of the week because the author can't get any new material. <<less

It's not a bad read by any means but as I was reading I kept thinking this feels too forced. This would've made a lot more sense if one person who was an okay author got some of the powers of a god and decided to make an entertaining reality TV show of people going to a fantasy world. The MC is pretty much a "Oh poor me" personality, the author made a lot of things not go his way but they also kept forcing misunderstandings and made them last... more>> longer then they should've. It also felt like the god is only out to mess with MC and his family, like they did something to anger it which felt out of place in later chapters.

A lot of chapters can be skipped like the Earth chat, I don't think you would miss much. Some of them were entertaining but then they kept coming up too frequently and lost the appeal and would last for like 3-4 chapters. If I had a time machine and went back in time, I wouldn't stop myself from reading it though. Bookmarked and I'll check this out again in a year. <<less

I like this novel but god I hate the main character. I can totally relate to him, but so many coincidences have to be written off as bad luck in order for it to turn out like this, and it's breaking plausible deniability. I expected he'd get over the whole depression thing in maybe 1 arc or 2 max, but it's been nearly 200 chapters and it shows no sign of ending, which is just frankly irritating. That alone dropped 3 stars off this novel. When it ends, I might... more>> update it.

Other than that, it's been great. Well written, believable characters, interesting setting. Just the main character f***ing everything up.

Only other gripe is the ludicrous viewership numbers. They are throwing out viewership numbers like 2 billion viewers from earth, which is frankly absurd. People have jobs, sleep, eating, and other television. Sure, this would be a big hit, but no way would it get 2 billion viewers.

EDIT: Dropped as of 187. It hasn't been interesting to me since basically the second arc. I'm getting the feeling that, rather than taking their time slowly developing the character, the author just doesn't know how to do character development. <<less

This is a somewhat decently told harem progression power fantasy with a stereotypical dense harem protagonist. That one-line should explain exactly why the ratings fall where they do. It's not bad, there are some ridiculous misses on the front of logic and math and the entire premise just sucks, but hey, I made it to chapter 144 and am still going-ish...

If you skip to chapter 6, the start is pretty good. Chapter 6 skips all the pre-life nonsense as well as the power selection. The series covers everything that happened... more>> pre-life and power overviews over and over again later anyways. Chapter 5 if you want the power selection.

Once the series actually starts, it's pretty good and it focuses properly on the plot and the intelligent advancement of Hikaru's powers and properly establishes him as an underdog.

The worst part in the early chapters is the viewer commentary. The author makes one of these every few chapters and he stretches it out so it fills an entire chapter. It covers literally everything that happened in the prior few chapters and gets tiresome really fast.

The series is definitely a downward spiral as the author adds more harem members, he spends more time focusing on their nonsensical "attraction" to the protagonist. The first one is fine, but it completely falls apart once the second one comes in. But that's like chapter 100 territory.

It's especially bad because the author spends entire chapters explaining why the Hikaru is too dense to realize that he's in a harem and that the girls actually like him. The girls are all extremely upfront and straight forward about their intentions, so this is particularly painful as Hikaru has no real excuse. This taints pretty much everything good about the series and I have to skip like crazy to find something worth reading again.

This series is fun, but it's all over the place in terms of logic. Like it has viewer counts that would go over the population of the human race assuming it is Earth with 6.7 billion people as the story says.

My criticism of the premise is basically that they shouldn't have used god to establish the plot. There's no positive interpretation to god creating a plot like this and it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. I'd much rather this be the result of greedy aliens turning earth into a game show. <<less

Pros:

Good world building

Good story telling

Alright concept (normal japanese LN concept)

Cons:

God has been planning a gameshow for the world?

MC has very weak mental, stereotypical to these types of LN's from Japan, but still pretty shitty.

People make questionable decisions constantly.

Super strong plot armor on family (sisters). I don't get why the author wants to ruin the story with them that hard.

I see a lot of conflicting reviews of this story, some of them I think have limited exposure to good Light Novels while others I think are looking for something else. So, I'm going to give a deep drive explaining my perspective.

Note: I start my reviews at 10/10 and subtract from there. Afterwhich I divide by 2 to get the ?/5 rating. This comes in at 4/10 or a 2/5. At this time I really haven't gotten very far into the story, but it lacks flavor. Nothing really stands out to me as being unique or special. Even if we ignore the writing issues, the cookie cutter darkness skills and personality would stop it from being a 5/5.

Broadcasting

The first 4 chapters the author sets up the stage (to long... more>> in my opinion) explained "god" showed up and is forcing 1, 000 people to be isekaied in 6 months. The time frame just seems odd to me... why 6 months? I could understand a day or maybe a week, but the 6 months seems like a strange amount of time. Why tell people "Hey I'm going to through you in a new world and broadcast it to everyone on this planet".

It just... idk seems odd. I know some other Light Novels used a similar idea, but instead of normal people it was gods. Or maybe other people within the tower or dungeon.

It does start to make a little more sense later on since the author uses real world discussion boards to act as information dumps. Explaining events, monsters, other isekied people situations... but personally I think it was a bad choice. It pulls me out of the mood and it doesn't feel like the story has as much weight to it.

-1 point (s)

Skills and Stats

One thing I thought was strange is how the Main Character picks their stats. He picks HP and Loved by Spirits (magic).
In terms of game and fantasy logic this is pretty strange. Normally you fall into a build so you can later on work with other people with different builds to create well rounded parties. This isn't a game breaker or anything, just seems counter intuitive. I mean pretty much anyone who has played an RPG knows this as min-maxing or at least the concept. Yet the Main character sort of defies logic (I will get into this more later).

-1 point (s)

When first reading this and it said "darkness" as one of the Spirit types... I just prayed. Please... please don't pick darkness. 99% of JP Light Novels the Main Character always has darkness. Either it's magic or their sword shoots it out. I am honestly surprised that this has become so common. In a world full of epic magic or amazing martial arts or whatever... it is always darkness. Why not fire, lightning, ice. I mean just give me anything else PLEASE!

-2 point (s)

Redundancy & Unexplained Information

There is a lot of redundancy in the writing. I should probably say plot or events instead since the writing itself is alright.
A great example is when the Main Character is first summoned, they arrive in a white room with a limit amount of time to select their stats.

During this, they mess up and reset their stats, so they have enough to pick something else.
However, they run out of time and poof, then arrive in the New World...
Or did they? They actually arrived in a tutorial-like spot, in which they have a few minutes to buy anything and adjust their stats. What was the point of the hype and tension around not having time... when they get more time afterwards? What is the point of the 3 mins in the tutorial when they get teleported somewhere else right afterwards?

It just seems odd, a bit redundant and not really needed. It is somewhat understandable since it is a web novel, so I'm not to disappointed.

We also see some odd pieces of information skipped. When the Main Character arrives he doesn't mention anything about adding his stats in the computer, but then afterwards he mentioned it was a computer. I'm not sure if this was the translation or what, but it isn't the only time this happened. We see it again with a crystal that is never explained, but out of no where he has it and it works exactly as planned even though he shouldn't know how to use it.

Odd Thoughts & Knowledge of things they shouldn't have

Another strange thing I've noticed are the odd thoughts of the main character. So let's say you are burned, you might think "oh shit, ouch, hot, ouch, water", but the Main Character sort of goes "I wonder if my childhood friend likes upside down pancakes.". (not a real example) It seems sort of strange for the situation.

I should probably give you an example, so you know what I mean.
Spoiler

The Main character just arrives in the New World trying to figure out his stats, settings, understanding the system and what not... but takes time to stop and think about when he will meet up with his childhood friend. He just watched her die before being transferred... that was actually why he arrived. How does he know she is alive or even there?

[collapse]

It just seems strange, this actually happens 3 or 4 times in the first 8 chapters. To make things worse, often time the Main Character just knows knowledge that he shouldn't know. Like trying to find someone... when he doesn't even know they are there. Actually, he should believe they are not... but for some reason seems as if he knows something we don't? Sort of like the author hinting that he is right?

I'm not exactly sure how to explain this, but it sort of feels like a newb mistake or something.
I'm pretty sure if this story was published this would be fixed, so it isn't a game-breaker, but it could be better.

I really like this! The tragic part of this and the persecution hit me too hard at first but it slowly gets rectified and things straighten out. I'll be curious what route this will take from here on out. Even if it goes into a cliche direction, I still enjoyed the beginning couple hundred chapters!
