Getting through the book's first half, I was so ready to give this a two-star rating (a max of 2.5 if I was feeling generous). The only other book I've read of this genre was Brother, and it was impossible for me not to compare CBLB with it. But as the book went on, I was so invested in reading the protagonist's thoughts and the reasons behind his actions that I couldn't help but feel for him (hence the increase in my ratings). The book was well written and deep... more>> enough for me to indulge in it. It did touch my limits at times, but as someone who can read just about anything written, I even slightly enjoyed it here and there. This is definitely not for the weak-hearted, and I wouldn't go around voluntarily recommending people to read this, but if you are here already, you might as well give it a shot if you can stomach the genre. <<less

Definitely not a healthy and friendly novel but I love it.

PS:

    1. Both leads are sick in the head:) (not complaining though)
    2. It is written in first person.
    3. Don't complain, read the tags first.
    4. Not for the weak minded.
    5. tr*shy parents.
I love it so much!!!! I love how I can understand the way they're thinking. Both leads are dependent and love each other so much. I, myself had realized that I'm also a crazy person with something wrong in the head. I can't seem to integrate with others as I don't know what to feel. I grew up watching others and learning how to be normal according to standards that others

speak of and built a persona to portray what others want to see:)

I love the MC and ML of this story. I know how weird I am, and I think I can understand their way of thinking. I'm just glad that I grew up in a good environment and had parents who teaches me well cuz I can totally imagine myself going astray without them.

What does it say about me that the thing I was bothered about was Duan Yan's frequent usage of the word c*nt 😭

Anyway, I don't think I'm really gonna write a review. I would just feel intimidated if I tried because I fear that I wouldn't be able to do it justice.

What I will say is: it will consume you. At least it did for me. It's been a while since I've managed to read an original work, my brain somehow being petulant to read anything but fanfiction. But recently,... more>> even fanfiction, I found I had no energy to read. So I scoured NU desperately for something, starting many novels but ultimately not following through them.

But La Bu Xia? I was hooked. I saw it in a Reddit post and what the OP had to say about them was that they are "a walking TW" and are "mutually abusive to each other." Not the words you will use to encourage (normal) readers to read, but then maybe I'm not really 'normal.' So I cl**ked on it, still not really expecting anything.

It was the atmosphere that pulled me in. The simple words paint such vivid and real images for me. I was intrigued. But even then, it was only when they finally got together that I felt this strong need to continue reading. Like I am almost a part of their relationship, knowing that what I'm doing is frowned upon but still craving for it, needing to see how their explosive feelings for each other unfold, even if it will permanently damage me in the process.

It was enticing. Nothing has enticed me in a long time.

To end this, here's two of my favorite passages in the novel:

  1. Of course, I didn't want to fight back either. There was a moment when I thought to myself that it would be great if my Ge beat me to death. On the day of my death, all of my diseases would be cured. From then on, I would become normal and healthy, keeping watch over my Ge from another world and looking forward to him coming to find me a few decades later with an old and ugly face. I wouldn't dislike him; I'd hold his hand.
  2. So I heartlessly stripped away his right to become someone else's father, making it such that he could only be my Ge for the rest of his life. If he was willing, he could occasionally be my father too. Anyway, I didn't have a father.

Don't read if you can't handle the tags. The emotions here are truly raw, but also dark.

Ironically, it's only in this novel that I read the most romantic line ever:

Such simple and straightforward sincerity, no flowers nor frills, but anyone on the receiving end of such words can only surrender their hearts in defeat.

Damn good... I thought I might stop reading after a while but turns out my bottom line was wayyy lower than I expected. Ignoring the fact that they are brothers, the love between them is so deep and precious. It might seem like an unhealthy relationship but to be honest, I thought it was the best choice they have.

Though their love is a little extreme and psychotic in a way, I can't help but find it beautiful. A good read! I don't regret finishing it in half a day :>

A perfect five stars. Story about two brothers who find peace in each other— not for the people who whine in a review cus they think they are the protectors of ethics/moral for the internet.
This story depicts a moment in a long journey of two brothers who seek peace in each other. A violent twist of words sprawl across the chapters as they color the emotions of MC as he explores his feelings for ML. (Mainly because of his POV, but hints of MLs is given) Both explore the void of problems that block the path of them being together. Definitely a good read for people who like stories that are not just black and white; that know that not every bad thing is necessarily a ‘bad’ thing. This story embodies the messy concept perfectly well.

Translation: Pretty good, 7/10. Thank you translator for getting those chapters out on such a regular basis! It was a joy to read & your hard work was truly appreciated.

Story: Tbh, after reading the first chapter I didn't want to continue. Duan Yan seemed like such an unreasonable brat & I was put off by that. But I came crawling back anyway & once more of the story was established I realized how beautifully this was written & was so surprised! I initially thought it was just a short, angsty... more>> smut about in*est. I was not expecting to reflect & think about what "love" is & who we are allowed to love, as much as I did nor did I expect to be rooting for Duan Yan & Duan Rui's unconventional love toward the end of the story! It was hard to read at times - I felt so angry on their behalf about their past & other times I was angry at the brothers themselves for being such a**holes. So this leads me to the characters...

Characters: I loved how raw & f*cked up both brothers are. They're not bad people but because they love each other so much they are constantly showing their ugliest side of themselves to each other. It's heart wrenching when it is intentional & they are testing the other party to find out: will you still love me even when you see this shitty part of me? Their insecurities & lack of confidence cause them to always doubt if what little they have of each other can be forever, even if they are able to disregard society's norms of love.

Sigh... like I said, this was such an unexpectedly lovely story. Tragic at first but also beautiful & thought-provoking.

This story is not for the faint hearted or morally strict people. It has plenty of dark elements, but I really liked it. The brothers were very dedicated to each other and grew throughout the story.

AAHH!! This novel is good!! the best!!

I know this novel is in the genre of in*est, even though it was openly stated many times by the MC. Not everyone likes in*est, but for those who do, really, this novel is great!

The story is very touching. this is the first time I read a novel with a love that is really deep and looks realistic. MC and ML are not OP, they fight and rely on each other. they know that they cannot live without each other.

MC is a reckless bad... more>> boy. his mother said he was mentally ill, but it was all because of their family upbringing that made MC sick. ML himself is also sick, he tends to have violent behavior (SM) but only on MC. ML also looks strong on the outside, but MC knows he is weak on the inside, he is very tired of this life and only wants money for MC.

Aah... this novel is really good. well, even though nsfw is a bit annoying and clumsy, but the story goes deep! read!! <<less

Our MC is too pitiful 😭😭😭 He got hit by his father too much until he get silly and he get f*cked by his older brother so much he become a fool. I just want to steal him away from all these men who inflict their emotions and violence on him and give him peace, love and happiness.

Truly a unique and interesting novel.

*But really careful if you want to read. The novel had lot if warnings, more than I can counts with my hands.*

MC and ML are blood related brothers with mental problems. I don't even know much about mental illness and their characteristics. But I can definitely tell both of them are mentally unstable.

... more>> And don't expect any of them to be good and innocent. They are not. If you really feel you need good MC and ML then just don't read.

The MC (younger brother) is the narrator.

We can see his pretty clear thoughts about his surroundings, his terrible relatives, and the fact that his feelings for his brother are considered abnormal by society and he know that. We can clearly feel how much he is twisted and mentally unstable. But at the same time he is smart. He can understand what should do and what should not do. (Somehow even I'm suprise he didn't go around killing people with how much unstable he is). A bit insecure about his brother's feelings.

ML (elder brother) is also smart, but we have not lot of detail to clearly understand him. Feel like he also mentally unstable. Bit of manipulative. With his world only has MC, he is also quite possessive and insecure. He also confess to MC that he really want to lock him up and keep him to himself, but because he love MC too much, he didn't do it.

ML (elder brother) fall in love with MC quite early, he even secretly bought him a couple bracelets but didn't tell MC and didn't even dare to keep his and only give MC one bracelet.

Relationship,

it's definitely not what I would call healthy (even without the blood relation), since a lot of it is one or both of the characters venting their frustrations and fears through pysical and s*xual violence. But understandable. We can clrealy see both MC and ML have only each other and there better of with each other even thought how twisted it was. Two characters and their pure, undying need for each other. They cannot live without each other; they are connected, right down to the blood. It's a crazy love mixed with desperation, devotion, thrill and struggle. It's sick, but in beautiful and unique way.

And thier parents are full on guilt for brothers situation. I sure non of them born with mental illness or psychotic behaviour. Both are very normal and pretty smart boys.

With MC

MC (younger brother) have to face mental and physical abuse before he can even learn to write. Constantly telling him he is sick one even before he really become sick and then he even start to doubting is he really sick. As a young boy he tried to be close to his brother even though his brother reject him at beginning.

since young age ML become mother's trophy boy. Giving his best to everything and winning all just to end up with throwing out as his mother found new family. Then again she using him as money card. Top of that he as a older brother having to take care of his younger brother at young age, face In difficult time starving just to feed his brother. It's really not a suprise when he also becomes mentally unstable. But he only show it in front of MC (with violence), where I even got little suprise when MC described it. So ML wasn't innocent too like MC.

Just with one word both of their survival each need themselves even though how much screwed up thier situation was. Because their already survived up to this long, I don't care about their toxic relationship if they can continue to live on.

The story isn't much complicate but the written style, and thier unique bond really got me.

And I'm really glad that this story is Happy ending. <<less

3rd time rereading it, definitely my fav yaoi (with Brother).

Really atypical with heavy topics (look at the tags before reading!), totally insane but so sweet at the same time. Whether you like it or not, you can't stay indifferent reading it.

I binged this in 2 days. It's soooo good. By the way this cover art is so well drawn especially the tattoos that resonates with what is in the novel.

Note the in*est tag. There's also themes like SM, r*pe, su*cide, abuse, s*xual violence.

The novel is written from a first person POV. From the first chapter, Duan Yan (MC) is already crazily having s*x with this guy in the toilet. Both MC and ML are not virg*ns for anyone who is concerned. Lots and lots of smut almost every other chapter... more>> but behind some of these violent s*x, there's a lot of angst too.

Duan Yan seems schizophrenic, often goes into rage, hallucinates and injures himself or others. I guess this is due to his dad's abuse (which is really really bad). Big brother Duan Rui (ML), 8 years older, is smart and capable but behind his pretty outlook, he also has a dark side to him that only Duan Yan knows. It was not easy to bring up his brother but he can only be the strong, unfaltering big brother in front of Duan Yan so I really feel his concealed pain. It is really very tough to live with a timebomb beside him.

The diaries at the end made me feel bittersweet. I was also heartened to see

Duan Yan slowly recovering (though I'm sure he'll go crazy again if his brother is hurt), him improving in his studies, that composition he wrote about his brother. Also seeing how much Duan Rui care and love for him since young, keeping all the small things his little brother gave him was especially heartwarming. I think that eventually grew into a romantic feeling which he kept until he found out Duan Yan kept looking for this "duck" that he originally kept then he went all jealous.

I think it's a good hurt and comfort read. It made me re-think of social norms and moral values. Would highly recommend this. <<less

This novel is soo fascinating. I started and not could leave it. It left me in a weird twisted yet satisfying way. Good plot and amazing translation. Personally I agree with the review of Srrrahim. I felt reading through you will think or people will think MC is the sick one but I feel the ML is very manipulative cause I felt apart from the parents & abuse, the MC had just fallen in a trap ML made long ago and still making. I felt everything he did was calculated... more>> or the result that was made so, is due to his conditioning. But well himself didn't have it easy either, both are suffering, mentally ill, traumatized, and not well in their three views in conclusion; so well I'm glad they are together, I hope they stay stuck together cause nobody can handle the other if not one of them, any other person will just be a tragic cannonfodder.

Anyway I liked it! I recommend, just be mindful of the tags, and be aware it's not for the faint of the heart! <<less

MC is an absolute psycopath, you've been warned.
This novels has great amounts of interc**rse between (blood related) brothers, s*xual interc**rse that I would consider very violent and there's even some amount of gore, MC and ML have some serious violent tendencies.
Other than the warnings, to me this is actually quite an interesting novel, they have an absolute toxic relationship but they just love each other so much and I feel like at the end they finally get some peace to be like any other couple, even if they still can't show their love in public.

Extra: Poor Duan Yan still wanting to top even at the end of the novel hahaha.

I found out about this novel by accident and was really reluctant to read it because of the tags, but I saw that the reviews were really good, so I gave it a shot and am glad that I read it. I loved this novel. Yes, everything tags mention is there, but, strangely, every action of those brothers is justified. The characters are very well developed, and I especially liked that their psychological condition and reasons behind it were shown. The author is really talented and wrote the story so... more>> that I couldn't judge or hate ML and MC; on the contrary, I liked and felt sympathetic towards them. MC's and ML's thoughts, reasons, relationships, and past—everything is written so beautifully that one can't help but root for them. <<less

For such a genre and tags, the story actually well written and none of it crossed my bottom line. I'm thoroughly enjoy and emotionally invested to MC and ml.

Both of them is a well paired crooked twisted individuals but very much in love.

Violence, MC tried to kill himself more than once, some parts where ML beat MC as punishment was too much for my heart, both characters are twisted

The angst was satisfying
