Solo Leveling

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”.

However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of catacombs, the “World’s Weakest”.

Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled catacombs… at least until I found a hidden catacomb with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank catacombs!

In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise.

Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

It's pretty much your average Korean power fantasy. There are some inconsistencies and parts that don't seem well thought-through, as well as the barely extant romance... but it's still a fun read. I would've given it a 4 if not for the ending (which isn't nearly as bad as it could've been). Overall, I recommend reading it if the summary appeals to you.

Though the early premise of a scrawny little manlet getting a system of sorts to aid him in clearing newly appeared dungeons is nothing new, I must say this webnovel did it well.

The story itself takes a direction I personally did not expect in any way, and the ending was extremely fleshed out with few if any loose ends.

Character development was pretty good, they really felt like characters instead of just names that were defeated or befriended.

Note there is light romance, however it's really just a side thing and doesn't... more>> affect the main story.

Although short, I would recommend this WN (as would most other readers). <<less

was a nice journey but not satisfactory one I know its authors own novel so its his own choice but many characters are forgotton it also had potential to become a harem novel one thing about korean novels is that they either have no romance or go extremes romance is also a part of life korean novel generaly dont have romance do babies fall from sky in korea ok enough of that some characters have no significance like his first teams healer, his father, or the nurse from hospital, cha... more>> hae in could also play a great role but is forgotton this novel could have much more potential but its wasted after he returns from usa there was no one who could stand against other worldy forces other than him everyone was useless except for him and his shadow army I know its name is solo leveling but its too much the only saving grace was that

Spoiler

artifact that he used to reverse time otherwise this novel was ruined

It was a fun read. Not perfect and everyone talks about this one but it’s one of the good ones. Best? Probably not.

Wow! You are truly revered here. So all the "faults" that some of you find in this work are not really so since it is these "faults" that appeals to the public (almost all the public).

About the overkill of the main character well that's exactly what people like, it is not quite well managed because as said Overclocker we no longer find adversity but once again it 'what most like and me what I think is that the overpower of the hero is precisely managed well in the fact that... more>> despite this power, the story still manages to please.

And the biggest point is that these faults are the characteristics of this kind of work and Solo Leveling is the best in its category. You can't compare Solo Leveling and Demon Slayer either, they're two completely different worlds. <<less

Honestly I found this story from the manhwa first, but then decide to finished the story by reading the novel because I could not wait for the manhwa. I start to read the novel from around chapter 80 so my review is only from that chapter till the end. When I know about this story, there are not many translation novel of story like this. So at that time really think the fact that only the MC can level up, which different from others is a really unique trait. At... more>> that time I also get kind of getting tired with the cliche Japanese isekai (not all of course).

I like the fact that Jin Woo is not a pushover person and not s*upid. I found his action throughout the story is reasonable as well. And the plot twist at the end of the story really give me a shock.

Spoiler

How he rewind time and do everything himself and prevent the dead of many innocence is so touching. A bit unrealistic but who cares, this is fiction. Kind of remind me of Fairy Tail I forgot which ark but many main characters die and I was so shocking but turned out because Ultear turned back time a minute no one die.

[collapse]

Compare to the manhwa of course the novel is more detail and I can understand the story better. I still can enjoy the comedy as well.

Spoiler

For example in manhwa, when the Shadow sovereign explain everything to Jin Woo, the explanation can leave many questions, so reading the novel can give more understanding.

[collapse]

Since I also start reading the manhwa first, so as I read the novel I imagine the story based on how it would looks like in Manhwa. The novel end around 240 chapter. The rest is extra and it good that we can read the novel from some of other point of view as well. There are even point of view some of the shadows and it is really funny. <<less

It really good, it's basically your usual powertrip, but there is actually some tension, and great characters to go along with it.

This was a great read, although the ending felt a little bit rushed, I would still give it a perfect score
While reading, It kept me on the edge of my seat, exciting events left and right and the number of "chills" I felt...
I recommend reading thoroughly because some parts would not make sense if you weren't paying attention
(Though this goes for most novels...)

Kinda miss mash with this novel.

Yeah it's a popular one and some said the manhwa is better (I haven't read it yet), but the conclusion is kinda suck (I'm not a fan of the rewardless re-do thing, though it's fit with MC character)

Pro

    • Great world building, the story and development is very good until Jeju Island arc
    • I like the characters... Many hunters are a good ones that makes the story not dark
    • Actually I like the leveling system, it's very2 simple one and to the point :)
Con

  • The conclusion direction is kinda sucks (the former Shadow Sovereign story is kinda farfetched and I don't like the re-do thing after the end)

There really isn't much to say about Solo levelling, it's literally my favorite power fantasy ever aside from Beginning after the end.

It's in essence a story about a young man that goes from being weak a frail to being an absolute badass without losing himself to his own power or something like that.

It's not some super complicated story that will rack your brains or anything like that, it's just an extremely fun read all in all.

As the main character becomes stronger and faces the next challenge, you can't hope but... more>> turn off your brain and enjoy the power fantasy.

The way things are set up makes it very enjoyable to watch the main character grow.

Now for some things, I believe people should know to have the right expectations, first the element of romance is not a very prevalent one and is almost non-existent. It's not a bad thing but you shouldn't expect much from it in terms of romance.

Then the side characters won't be super developed or anything like that, they aren't one-dimensional but they don't have too much screen time, since the focus is mostly the main character.

Finally, I think personally that's it's an overall very satisfying read and that if you don't know if you'll like it, give it 10-15 chapters, and if you don't feel like it's for you by then, drop it. <<less

All the novels that I read so far are good at the beginning, some are still good in the middle of the story, but endings are bad, I mean plot. Solo leveling is the only novel that is consistent.

Been reading this since 2018 (I check it's update EVERYDAY and has reread this for 4 times) and now waiting for the manhua to finish, this is how good the story is, I've been reading novels that could be adapted manhua, but some couldn't even be up to par, this is my only fave novel that could truly bring out the feeling and aura of what was written in the book though some details were left out but it was the minority

Really enjoyable action novel, the plot is pretty simple but emotional, tons of potential, the ending is really epic but too short, the side story is also nice.

This is something that everyone must read

This is really a good read. I don't know why there is so many biased criticizing comments but it is not as bad as they say.

  1. There is some of the character that left out a long the story like the nurse from hospital. But if you think it carefully she is just someone he coincidentally got to meet. Not to mention he doesn't know her name and their professions are not the one you can put together so it is natural that she got left out. Then what about the healer from his party who really care for him. Hunters professions carry a lot of risk that match their salary. She is originally Nurse from the some hospital. Even after she become awakened and assigned as rank B healer, she didn't join any guilds and work in the association only to clear low rank dungeons cause she is afraid of battles. Of course after witnessing super strong monsters crushing her raid team members like nothing she would give up right away. She only got really lucky to return alive from that place.
    Spoiler

Then what about Eisil the demon from the tower that got neglected? If you read to the later chapter, you will see the instance dungeons are created from the Sovereign of Shadow power and they are just illusions created in the place of Eternal rest not to mention even the Baran the demon king (Sovereign of white flames) is just the recreation from the memory of Sovereign of Shadow.

    [collapse]
  2. As for the ending it is how the author plan out so some reader will find it hard to end with that choice.
    Spoiler

Even though he won the war, even though he can live peacefully as the savior of the world, even though everyone in the whole world recognize his hard word and effort, he chose to rewind the time using god artifacts to regain the sacrifices from the war. From the character point of view, countless innocent citizens died. The fear towards the monsters in the corner of his sister mind after the accident that happens in her school to be weight down on his mind. He got the chance to repair by using his efforts and rewards so he chose to do it. After rewinding time he battle the sovereign in the dimensional gap for 27 years and he succeeded in doing it. He successfully protected the earth from the battle between the sovereigns and rulers. After marrying Cha-hae-In, he live in there happily ever after.

    [collapse]
But From my point of view it is unfair how many criticize for not choosing the glorious life rather than how the story turn out.

The best novel I've read so far. The manhwa is fire as well. Had all the elements I'm looking for in a novel. Except (dense protagonist) tag. This novel didn't have much fillers too. The best read for me.

this is the one that got me into web novels and I will always be thankful to this good novel. Although it was my first ever reading web novel, it was so great experience that I read it few times, not including extras (I really couldn’t see reason why author had to write that many extra chapters that wasn’t necessary) the ending was kind of bummer but I convinced myself to believe it was the right choice for MC. MC loves his family and friends so he sacrificed himself... more>> for their own good, I guess. After the MC became so op, nothing exiting really happened expect for the few fight scenes with humanity‘s absolute powerful hunter, the giant orc (?), and some life threatening foes of MC‘s backer who left for his slumber. My most favorite part was MC‘s shadow „subjects or subordinates“ they were so cute, really liked them. It‘s light read and has no drama or scheme so all is good. <<less

Pretty decent. Good intro to novels. As everyone else says, after the first half of the story
Spoiler

(after the island raid)

, it progresses too quick for my taste. Could've been fleshed out in maybe 15 or more chapters. However, a lot of people didn't like the ending. Idk why though, he literally got the best timeline. Other than that, solid story and writing.

Highly recommended!

I like the novel and I found myself reading the manga Solo Leveling. The drawing is really good and at first I never really liked overpowered protagonist but this made me broke my rule. It's really a great novel!
