“Even if this universe is truly nothing more than a brutal bloody shadowy forest, we Cultivators will burn all that we have just to give off a single weak flickering spark in the darkness!

“No matter how weak each spark is, how short-lived, how small… As long as the sparks flow unabated, then one day one of those sparks will light some tinder, and that tinder shall light some fallen branches, and those branches shall set ablaze each and every last tree of the forest!

“In the end, even the smallest sparks will eventually set the shadowy forest ablaze, and illuminate the whole world!”

In a world teeming with cultivators, Li Yao, who makes his living collecting scrap metal, encounters the soul of a titan powerhouse from forty thousand years in the past.

One of the most cringe novels I have ever read. It is a sci fi setting dressed up as a xuanhuan.. The premise is interesting that it's supposed to be a modern cultivation society but it doesn't deliver well. I was expecting more of the crafting/refining but there's hardly any.. It's mostly only action with refining mentioned in one chapter after an entire arc of fighting.

This is really disappointing. The MC is arrogant and overdramatic, plus he keeps making s*upid decisions to show off. Plus this novel seems to be focusing more on fighting than the MC's talent of creating artifacts.

Spoiler

Also, why the heck did he get set up to join that mixed fighting university :I

[collapse]

I guess it's clear that this story will be about a mix between fighting and crafting artifacts which is basically the same as literally every other xianxia novel out there. Wish they just stuck to the non-fighting side.

Romance: none atm but lots of mentions of various girls and the MC's "type" which is annoying

Dropped because I don't like how the MC acts plus how generic this is. <<less

MC is very hardworking to begin with, and having "fortunate encounters", his ability soar to another level. While quite arrogant, MC knows his limitation very well and won't just collide into every crisis.

As protagonist, the story will bound to focus on MC, but too much focus is not good. By the time I dropped this novel, MC shows up at the last minute to fetch the best result, being the last person of a "301"-group of people, also being the one and only student of a whole faculty. Almost everyone... more>> start off to undermine MC and ends up to gawk at MC. Pretty generic.

The story itself is a mish mash of everything with cultivation, sci-fi, magic, battle, body transformation, and even soul keeping technology (basically everyone would become immortal as long as they manage to transfer the soul before it dissipate, I guess?). It also contains too much conversation without any essence. <<less

Dropping the novel for now because it felt rather dry and convoluted. The novel have a few things that are really great: characters, world-building, and cultivation levels. Many of the characters are interesting, even the antagonists but sometimes you just wonder if it was necessary to flesh out some of them if they were going to appear sporadically. The world-building is simply phenomenal and one the things that excite me the most about the novel.

My main gripes about the novel are the over-reliance of exo suits (just something I dislike... more>> personally) and the writing style. The author has the tendency to go into the finest details of things (regardless whether they are necessary or not) which not surprisingly, felt like infodump and/or fillers to many readers.

However, I do believe that the author has been doing a rather good job considering that this is his first novel. Might resume reading this novel in the future. <<less

man, gotta give credit for the author for coming up with all these wild imagination.

The first volume and half of the second volume of this novel isn't really anything special, but it does set the mood on what kind of world that we're about to be entering to.

The novel also suffers from many info dump throughout the story, but atleast the major plot points is self consistent. You know that the author had the world building planned out already.

After the second half of Volume 2, the novel suddenly picked up... more>> its pace, you're suddenly being introduced to all these powerful and competent villains. What makes these villains powerful isn't only just their cultivation but also their belief and motivations, they aren't there fighting for a petty benefits, but for a far greater purposes.

As for what I really like about our main character Li Yao is that he isn't stagnate, you can feel how he gradually changes from the various event that he encounters. His belief changes and strengthened from engaging with those super villains. Many characters that he faced is even far more competent and excellent than him. It makes reading about his triumph over those characters even more satisfying.

The novel is also really competent on setting up tension. It is like Mission Impossible, you got a main goal, time limit, and everything never goes right. Many times Li Yao and his comrades must improvise during mission due to the ever changing situations. Rising even more tension to the seemingly impossible mission already.

(I will further update this review when I have the opportunity to) <<less

Interesting concept w Scifi like star War merge w Cultivation as planet evolve from tr*sh years MC into travelling to other planets w spaceship

However, after a while the story tiring {for me specifically cause I have attention span of a goldfish} since MC will work extra hard to overcome poor aptitude and struggle in difficult position until become op then rinse n repeat

The philosophy of the novel is good as not everyone opposing MC is evil {like the Demons} and they have their own civilisation and culture. Shades of grey... more>> n MC need to work hard to maintain his morality
Spoiler

dark forest theory whereby the strong thrive and should sacrifice the weak to improve civilization vs. MC morality of Strong should protect the weak

Pretty good but there's a couple things I don't like.

First of all, there's too many info dumps, like I know it's there to help us understand the world but there's just so much info that it's like a Garbage dump.

Second of all, the characters talk too much, it seemed like the author wanted to make the characters more real by adding more lines, but from my perspective, a lot of lines were unnecessary. It's like, there's one where demon beasts invaded a city and of our MC and his crew... more>> fight but after MC kills one demon, everyone worships. But that's not the worst bit, the MC and his schoolmate get into a conversation spanning over 3 chapters. All three chapters, they were walking and wasting time while in the middle of a f*cking fight. Also, the conversation was on the pricing of weapons the MC was selling. Like goddamn, did you have to use up 3 chapters just for that? It was super boring and unnecessary <<less

I really didn't think I would be seeing another 5 star (just my opinion, of course) novel after reading Nine Star Hegemon Body Art, but, yes, here is another golden nugget. Blending futuristic sci-fi and ancient cultivation together has to be a headache, but this author pulls it off very nicely.

The author weaves some very clever events into the story and the MC is usually desperately looking for ways to overcome obstacles vs an overpowered MC that simply stomps all over every problem like less imaginative authors are wont to... more>> do. It's also interesting in how diverse the problems the MC faces are - meaning unlike many other cultivation novels, the MC doesn't just face an endless series of tournaments and duels against despicable silk pants one after another.

From the beginning, this author shows and uses what we writers call "Chekov's gun", which means you place something (object, person, whatever) early in the story that the reader cannot make heads or tails out of and later, of course, you "fire" the gun and the thing placed in the early part of the story goes off with a bang of an event start up. This author knows how to do this, and thus, is no amateur regardless of this being his first novel or not.

Also, you just have to laugh at the desperation of living in a garbage dump that the MC grows up in and starts out the story. His life is definitely a roller coaster of ups and downs that provides a "can't wait to see what happens to him next" feeling. <<less

I don't know what to say, at first it attracted me and how 'shameless' he is and how cunning he is in the early stages, but I got disappointed when he formed his core for how he always say 'damn that cunning old bastard', 'Is every old monster always that cunning' how the author made him brain-dead in thinking plans as he always just repeats them but it made me stick because of his awesome mental devil ~ Maybe it's the authors intention so I'mma just suck-up my complains

A story that you would like to read that have secret plot after plot. The world building itself is good also the part about this story technology was quite interesting even though it was based from something you won't expect. Regardless im enjoying my readingpace lately with this, what I want to say was.. Give it a chance and you won't regret it following every arc only to find the story growth much more in bigger picture than you expect. Some part in the story was quite long I admit,... more>> to the point that I want to skip it but hey it was interesting and who hate mecha? Especially when they're combined with super power that are quite "logical" based from "this story logic". I really want to give it 5 star but I didnt finish reading it yet. <<less

Probably my favorite novel. It has excellent worldbuilding, a likeable set of characters and really good storytelling. I really mean it when I say that the worldbuilding is excellent - it has a really unique setting, many things are well thought out and you have various types of believable characters. One of the things that I like the most about this novel is how wholesome it is at times. You don't have too many s*upid patriarchs or arrogant young masters that go full ret*rd in their actions. The only main... more>> negative I can think of is that the novel is long, extremely long at 3000+ chapters which means that it's unlikely most english readers will get to the end. As much as I love this novel, I can't even imagine it keeping a certain level of quality the entire time. But for now at least, 5/5. <<less

Great story with very ingenious world setting. It is one the best novels so far in the sci-fi/Cultivation type ones and manages to mix the two extremely well. It literally represent a normal xianxa world whose technology kept improving over the years (finally a realistic setting) and take place thousands of years latter after a dark age (most of the top level resources and technologies lost) and humanity allied together to fight demons/monsters (both civilizations went down to the same level).

  • Technology is well thought out: cultivators can have minds faster the supercomputers so why can't they change a flying sword to a flying ship and create cannons from compressing energy to create flying warships? The same idea for mechas (ameliorated armors)

This is a really amazing series. It manages to satisfy all those gaming elements we all have come to know and love in the Chinese Web Novel world.

It hits on epic battles, solid MC, good crafting system, mechs, sect building, training, world building, it does a ton of different things, but they all feel like they have a place with the character and the world. They never feel like they were just thrown in there because the author felt like it.

All in all, one of the better series I've come... more>> across in a while. Finely crafted novel with next to no filler that doesn't follow the same formula over and over. <<less

It's a good read with few small flaws here and there but nothing that would make you quit reading. The story is fun and enjoyable but some story scene seem a little rush and could be expand a little more for better reading experience.

Good novel.

I just want to reply to the user who wrote he find it impossible, based on his cultivation, that Ou Yezi died being hit by the train. Here is a paragraph from Ch 12:

Spoiler

“I reckon that in the matters of time traveling, cultivators would receive great harm to their bodies. Ou Yezi must have received serious damage and his cultivation base took a large hit. Otherwise, based on the tyrannical strength he displayed in the dreamworld, I can’t say for sure if the crystal train would have been even capable of knocking him off the bridge.”

It's pretty good. It reminds me of Exterminatus Now, a mashup of Warhammer 40k and Sonic. It messes with my comprehension when I read the other reviews, which point out glaring plotholes or flaws in the story, because those story elements are clearly xianxia renditions of Warhammer 40k elements. A great emperor betrayed by his clone because said clone has been corrupted by extraterrestrial demons. The "ancient" technology from 40, 000 years ago is vastly superior to most modern tech. For goodness sake, they even use chainswords!

Oddly engrossing, every now and then story goes off the rails and the MC does quite a few things that seem really childish or just nonsensical. I guess it makes some sense given the MC's background, but the way it is presented can get annoying, so far at least some of those decisions get reflected on and questioned later. There seems to be a pattern of going off track -> back on -> off again.

The MC's main motivation is to be a refiner and create wondrous items, but is often... more>> sidetracked into standard fighting and training. Every time that happens I just hope that he gets back to refining soon as that is one of the most distinct parts of the story. There are already thousands of standard fighting novels.

The world is interesting, but often the author spends too much time making up technobabble. Also, the advanced technology often is overshadowed or overly reliant on a person's own strength. I was hoping it'd have more of a focus and relevance, as it was in the beginning of the story.

Time will tell if the story goes way off track, other reviews indicate that it might, but the author has previously managed to avoid going too far off, so hopefully its nothing excessive. <<less

This novel is unique from the standard xianxia settings. Rather than conflicts arising to display how sturdy the plot armor is for the MC, they come into existence from a more realistic occurrence. From misunderstandings to leveraging influence isn't uncommon in a xianxia setting, but from the current translations, it has yet to escalate into a life or death conflict of which only one side can exist whilst the other can not.

The world in which the MC lives in has a structure of rules, laws, and common sense amongst those... more>> of the same race. The common theme of 'my fist is bigger so I can do as I please' isn't common and has its own consequences when individuals act in such a manner.

The SciFi future setting has some similarities to Skyfire Avenue that is enjoyable to read, deviating from the standard ancient China atmosphere. Rather than a stagnant civilization that continues the old traditions without making any progress in innovation, the author combines the two. The author has created a setting in which technology advanced while building on the foundations of ancient cultivators had created.

For those that want a quick pace, face smacking, eat my fist type of novel, this might not be for you. <<less

Geez, I don't need to say much do i? Just read the thing, much better than the popular/highly-rated stuff on here.

Ill talk about cons instead.

If youre not used to or have no experience with cultivation novels this may be hard to get into, double that if youre not used to scifi settings. Id find it hard for people like above to imagine the glorious scenes in their head though the author's deliberate style may help a bit.

The only other con I find is that its a bit slow but its... more>> the consequence of the world building that the author is trying to set up.

In conclusion, most of the good things have been said already so look at that or just read my first sentence and give it a go. <<less

Really good novel.

Interesting ideas and presentation. Deeper character development than most other novels out there.

The pace picks up quite quickly after the beginning chapters and I particularly like that training is sped up rather than taking about 15 chapters like other novels.

Interestingly I think the author took lots of ideas from the Warhammer 40k universe. Apart from the name itself, ... more>>
Spoiler

The author talks about a supreme emperor that had to fight against his own demonized self - quite similar to the Horus Heresy, where Horus, son of the Emperor was corrupted by Demonic influence. Now both emperors are in a life-death cycle. There is also talk about demonic influence corrupting cultivators (akin to Chaos Space marines). There are also chainswords and bolters!

[collapse]

Regardless of the similarities above, I enjoyed a sci-fi take on cultivation. Its clear that the author loves technicalities and so do I.

Overall one of the better novels out there. A good thing is how even low level cultivators can make such a difference. So far power-glut is held at a minimum. <<less
