This novel is generally a Slice of Life novel. If you're looking for serious fighting scene, hero time, and serious issues, then don't read this. Honestly I don't agree to the adventure genre of this, because even though he travels, it's not the main focus of the story and those are not all to fight for something.

Some says that the story is slow, but I almost didn't notice it. The story is about what our MC is doing everyday, how come he is liked by the gods. Building a laundry... more>> agency, researching about slimes, travel, those may sound boring, but for me it's not. It's relaxing to read how he build his business, and how he is researching about slimes.

Does the MC have a romantic relationship?
-There's none but a daugther of the family he knows is interested on him. Also, that daugther classmates also respect the MC because of his skills.

So if you're looking for relaxing slice of life story, then I highly recommend this. PS: If you found an interesting novel, don't allow yourself to be affected by the reviews, try it first. Except from time, you have nothing to lose. (Also sorry is my english is bad) <<less

After a great opening and setup it felt like the author dropped the ball hard.

I really dislike the main character. He is allowed to do no wrong, EVERYTHING he does/says has people patting his back. The author wrote him as a master of all trades, magic, magic research, melee combat, life skills, and several crafting professions. He feels like a character from Skyrim with all this done in seriousness not as a jokey character. His slimes are used as a crutch because they can do everything and just need water... more>> or sunlight to live, so there's always just some NEW sort of nifty slime skill that can do X or Y for free. The only reason his businesses even function is because of that crutch. I mean sure at first it's fun, but 4 volumes later it's still happening.

I hate the authors writing style. Everything is narrated by the MC instead of experienced. There's no fumbling through crafting processes or learning how to do X, it's all described afterwords by the MC that he had done X. And most dialogue feels very basic and barebones with common polite exchanges making up the bulk of it. It just felt like there was few actually interesting interactions over the course of the series.

And keep in mind that the author dropped this series after running out of ideas and is now remaking it. Which of course is going to happen when you write your MC as a master of every freaking skill with the personality of a polite radish. I personally have zero interest in reading the remake since I felt no progression for the author over the course of the books, in fact his narrative habits felt even worse by the end. <<less

The story is quite nice and the translation good. The sense of building dimensions seems a bit off, but I guess that could be just the author not having a good grasp of scale.

The way characters are written and treated is nicely done.

The reboot is supposed to diverge at around Vol. 3, which is where the author failed to expand upon the world beyond the base town and already established characters. (probably since he had to scrap more than half (v3+v4+v5) he decided to start at vol 1)

Yet I... more>> would still say that its perfectly fine to read because in a sense this version did tell everything it could with how it went and the remainder of the story could be imagined assuming nothing unexpected occurred.

Spoiler

Ryouma angry and the kingdom as well because of the incident in v5 --> destroyed Dark Guild. Next I guess Elia would have to put in quite the effort to snare Ryouma, but its very probable that they would end up together with him becoming the next Duke throu marriage. Happy ever after....

Excelent!

From every novel I read so far this has left me with the most heartfelt feelings. Character development is not fast paced, but instead it's slow and fits in the storyline. The Main Character starts off pretty well rounded but soon everyone finds out about his "secrets" even tho he hides some of them from his "adopted" family. The novel has a vivid world, the translators did an amazing job keeping the translations and some of the japanese idoms clean and easy to understand. I cant stress enough to any... more>> starting novel artist that you are writing a world that can either be just words on a paper or start to intrude on readers imagination. Which this novel has made me do on countless occasions. Finally if for nothing read it for the "awww" effect. <<less

As of now, I have only read the first volume, much less the raws, so I cannot say this for the whole novel but, the writing sucks. There are often grammatical mistakes and the words are kind of hard to swallow. They often converse strangely, in a way that is hard to imagine being done by real people. Of course that is with the exception of stock characters like the samurai-like person and the ojousama. I'm not sure whether it's the translator (s) or the author himself that causes this.

Aside... more>> from that, the point of views are mixed up as well as the use of pronouns. It's inconsistent. This novel has a third person point of view which ends up giving it an impersonal impression. That gives way to some problems like how the thoughts of MC are widely unexplored, much less the world. But for all I know, that may be intentionally done by the author.

The characters are shallow and give off an impression that they were created solely for the convenience of the MC. They feel "forced", like robots that praise and praise and spoil the MC as if they were made for that purpose; they just make everything better for the MC. Well, maybe that's saying a bit too much but, what I mean to say is that the characters are insubstantial, superficial, etc. I don't feel much individualism.

The MC too. I like how he is calm and collected and find his past mysterious and I also know that because of that past,
Spoiler

he's twisted.

He can't get along with people very well. Okay. He doesn't like the society. Okay. But if it's that setting, then he's done a lot of things that are contradictory to this. He thoughtlessly invited strangers to his home. He thoughtlessly reveals things about him. He thoughtlessly comes to travel with those people and depends on them. Not okay.

Well, he did think. But he did not hesitate. If he's the type who's unsociable, there should at least be some reluctance and vigilance when dealing with other people but to even reveal his past casually, and moreover, to reveal the results of his long-term research just like that... He's supposed to be an Uncle who's over 40 years of age but he acts like a naive kid.

If you're saying, 'Don't worry, those people were good people.', then yes they are. Look how convenient that is?

It's absurd.

Well, he's OP but that's not from the cheat he received from the gods. Good. The cheat is actually different and only makes him even more OP. Amazing.

[collapse]

Well, I'm starting to think that maybe, Ryouma here is a descendant of that legendary person named Mary Sue.

BUT. The Man Picked up by the Gods has a very interesting story, in my opinion; especially about that slime research. This story has a great prospect and I am very much looking forward to it. THIS is the only factor that pulls me into it and keeps me from dropping this light novel and this is also the reason my rating did not go below 3 stars.

I have yet to see the raws for myself so I can say that this review is still incomplete but that is my over all observation about this novel from the first volume. <<less

From all the conflicting reviews between "best novel ever" and "it's so slow it's boring", I didn't quite know what I was getting into.

After reading a bit more than 2 complete volumes/arcs, I can say that I enjoy it very much, but I can definitely see where most of the complains are coming from.

Most of the cast feel weak when compared to a main character that excels in everything he tries, be it magic, martial arts or business.

It's not that they are treated as replaceable side characters, but the story... more>> could have benefited a bit more if the main character actually needed the help the others are giving, even if it was just things like giving advices on things he actually needed.
I mean, some character do teach him a few spells and such, and it would definitely not have been as easy without people's help, but the main character ends up overshadowing everyone too much.

The pacing is definitely not fast, the fairly long chapters usually don't have much happening at once, so for people in search of spicy combat scenes everywhere and heavy progress, it can definitely feel padded. I personally enjoy this pace, but it's definitely going to vary on a person by person basis.

The world isn't pushed through your throat too much via chapter long expositions on why X country does Y and such, and we learn more about the world as the main character discovers it, and it is fairly well put together overall.

I also have a thing for novel that do slime evolution, especially when it's not just for combat things (usually it's more dungeon novels and stories that have this), because I always like this feeling of slimes being at the bottom in term of starting strength but having nearly unlimited potential if trained and fed well.

While it's not a top quality novel by any mean, it's been enjoyable so far for me, even though the story definitely has a "happy go lucky" feel to it, with a lack of goals and directions, be it in the beginning or even where I am (V3 C11).
It's better written than most of those novels without goals though, and because the whole thing interests me, I end up reading for longer than I had planned almost every time I started a chapter. <<less

Good plot in the beginning but the MC is simply omnipotent because he is to op both in power and knowledge until the point the god who picked the MC look like idiots. I already got tired because the overused of some ordinary things that look really special in that world and just add the setting the other characters that surround the MC are just a bunch of idiots.

Just a story about the everyday life of the MC. Not my type of story because the MC doesn’t really have a main goal or a big dream...

He is just learning how to live in the world he was sent to. Even with OP powers, he’s really humble and doesn’t really showcase his strength all that much.

The story is interesting... but I prefer novels like ATG and TDG.

Unlike other typical otherworld/transported novel, this one has a truly proper plot. The author does a really excellent job in writing it smoothly. What makes it really good is that the MC's action is pretty logical and unique, unlike many other MCs that try to get laid, make harem, or in pursue of revenge.

This is not for those who desperately looking for a harem or immediate love scene early into the novel. No, how the characters have relationship is very logical, proper courtship and all. So this is not a... more>> read for you if you are a raging teenager wanting a girl's affection.

The story is very much unique. Simply saying (not spoiler), while most other MCs go on a guild quest, collecting herbs, hunting goblins, or maybe slaying dragons and all, our MC take a mission to clean a city's feces dump site. Disgusting you say? Anyone would think so, but somehow, magically, miraculously, the author can make that set up to be more interesting than slaying dragons or any others. WTF right?

There is no demon lord subjugation, there is no mindless killing or grinding, and there is no cheap girls that easily falls for MCs. MC's goal is only to live a good life in the new world.

This more of industrialization type of otherworld novel instead of the usual adventure roaming style. MC brings many innovation both from Earth and from the otherworld. The common stuffs he does or makes turns out to be extraordinary for the otherworld folks.

You can see what kind of novel this is in just 5 or so chapters, so do try it. <<less

The Man Picked up by the Gods is quite different from other reincarnation stories. It does not avail itself of the convenient (and frankly quite worn out already) 'template characters' or 'template events' you usually find in most Japanese works. Actually, even details on the characters' appearances are sparing, leaving the readers plenty of room to imagine.

There are no harems or romantic relationships yet aside from one sweet childhood friendship that has the potential to become one. I find this quite refreshing really. After reading so much loli characters elsewhere... more>> being sexualized, I found that reading about a young female character that actually acts genuinely innocent and pure is quite nice.

If I were to describe this work in one word it would be 'humble'. It does not aim for the grandeur the genre usually entails. There are no 'chosen ones' to save the world or 'Demon Lords' to ruin it. Not yet anyway. Right now it's just about the characters and how they live their everyday lives, how they make a living etc.

Mostly its about the MC. Along the way we get to see how he slowly opens himself up to other people. He goes from an introvent hermit living deep inside the forest to a successful central figure playing a large role in the lives of a group of people and to an extent a whole city.

So if you want to read about a fun and wholesome story about self-improvement and friendships then read this. If you're after an "OP" series full of action and power trips then this isn't for you. <<less

MC constantly reminds himself that he has lived 40 years and tends to act like a moderately self aware 40 year old man. For many children this is boring thus the large amount of low ratings.

If you are looking for a story about an adult trauma victim or social outcast who is reborn for a second chance to have a magical teenage angst drama/harem, read elsewhere.

It felt like the writer of this story wanted it rushed around volume two I'm not sure why, but because of this he missed out on something that could of been a great story about the MC growing along side the others, but that was almost 100% skipped.

After volume two its pure MC doing random stuff not much else

and now its dropped :o

If you start this you are prob fine if you have free time, but if not don't read or stop at volume 2

It is not an action packed isekai by any means but that is what I like about it. If I want to read a heavy novel with action and tragedy than there are plenty I can choose from. This novel is a palate cleanser and a light and fun slice-of-life style read. The author, through the protagonist, comes up with some really creative uses for the slimes and keeps the story interesting and fun to read. The protagonist is strong but not in a way that makes me dislike him... more>> or makes me feel like there is no point to him even fighting anymore; he steadily build himself up throughout the story through thorough training. All in all it's a light and fun read with a clever and strong protagonist in a world with a fairly well fleshed out setting and characters. The translation is also excellent. Done by hand (not using a MTL), the translation has great grammar making the story easily accessible to a native English speaking audience.

If I had a complaint it would be the slow to non-existent romance for the protagonist and, of course, that the author left it unfinished. The author has started a reboot of the story and I'm looking forward to seeing how he alters this story. <<less

At first the premise seemed interesting. A man who lived a very sad life on Earth dies, is picked up by Gods to send him to another world (they just need anyone to send, so that they can transfer mana alongside him). But the gods took pity on him and gave him a few more perks.

What I never liked in Japanese novel is how characters wants to stay low. In this world, the noble who "adopted" him basically tell him that there've been many people like MC, and the government have a rule to not mess with them (they did in the past, and it ended very bad for them lol). But no, MC and gods create a fake identity for him when there's no need. His skills he obtained BY HIMSELF on Earth, they justify it by saying that he's the disciple of 2 strong masters..

After volume 4, it becomes a cooking novel. I'm tired of this, and it looks like it isn't going to change. I drop it, the novel had a lot of potential, but it got wasted. If only the MC was more proactive, instead of being pushed around every single time.

I love hard working, thoughtful MCs, and this novel provides it. He’s rather OP, but doesn’t really lord it over anyone’s head, looking to improve the world how he can: WITH THE POWER OF LAUNDRY!

Overall, it’s not the normal sort of summoned to another world tale, so don’t expect that. It’s more of a slice of life/comedy than strict adventure. Don’t expect the MC to face any real challenges and treat the chapter releases the same way you would treat a Sunday comic: Sure, the status quo doesn’t change, but... more>> it’s funny. <<less

A breathe of fresh air in the Reincarnated In Another World genre, The Man Picked Up by the Gods is an entertaining journey of a man given a second chance at life and at youth. The pacing is very laid back but very well executed plus the banter is uniquely conveyed in a way that makes you actually feel the characters' characters. 1. The novel is quite good. The little bit of chemistry between girl elialia and ryouma is superb and heart warming. This can be read for quite some time and it give relief and lighten my mood. Even slime have their own personality growth
    2. The story is nice but the only down point is the lack of antagonist action. Am not bothered by it cause this story is still charming and give warm vibes. But I guess the people want the action between ryouma and the earth god too much. So if you want something overly action filled this might not be a novel for you
    3. Fights are explained in detail make it easy to imagine along reading I could clearly visualise like seeing straight into anime.
    4. Well only sad point is they stop this story. Well I guess it is mostly cause people wanting a antagonist and commenting their is not a plot. While if one notice this have many sub plots like romance between elilia and ryouma. The story about slimes. The god and their relationship. Things about finding grand parents inheritance. But still it felt bad writing this but rather than writer the one at fault is amature reader who can't just accept they didn't get what they expected and bad rate the Novel. I would certainly enjoy it if it continued more
    5. Well with this their is a reboot out their it is mostly slice of life with more lesser fights but tbh it is great in romance. Really I can't get enough of cute elilia and her expressive way of behaving

Ryouma the greatest janitor, maid, cry baby, old man who mostly talks about his life to gain sympathy.

The most important thing is that he is the creator of the household chores slime.

Good thing this novel was dropped. Even though it has already reached 5 volumes due to a fact that most people would rather skip most of the chapters.

I recommend this to anybody who wants to go to sleep. On my experience it is very effective, just 3-5 chapters, you wanna close your eyes afterwards.

So far I've only read the prologue for this, to say the least: I'm disappointed. Other than the prologue, I've read a couple of reviews (disregarded all 5-star reviews) and noticed that the story goes nowhere. Anyways, from my reading of the prologue, I discovered some somewhat blatant bias/racism.

"but as an earthling, especially a Japanese the material should be pretty good as you have an advantage." (Prologue 1)

The author doesn't even bother to hide his thoughts that Japanese qualities make them superior to other "races." I would've been fine with a boring story, however, only in the case of no racism. (Unless it's for plot reasons, such as period, location, and/or a conscious choice for the character) This instance has left a sour taste in my mouth that will surely affect the final review of this novel. <<less
