Pfft this is the kind of story a messed up kindergartener would write.

What's so bad about the "novel" you ask?

Well, let's see... shitty romance, plot holes, dumb MC, random ppl throwing themselves at the MC just to be defeated by him, etc.

Anyways, I'm going to continue reading this story because it's so bad it's amusing. There's many cruel authors out there, but it seems like the one who wrote this was trying their best to create a tr*sh of a "novel", (if you even consider it to be.)

Oh, and the MC's gay but he keeps trying to conceal it by pretending to be interested in women.

haha jk, but it sure seems that way

3.5-4.0 stars~

I lowered my standards before diving into the book so I definitely enjoyed it a lot more than the people giving 1 star reviews. Still haven't finished reading but I've read enough to get the feeling that the relationships built between the MC and the other characters are really superficial. It really doesn't take much to be "sworn brothers" with the child of light...

MC seems to have a magical personality where others automatically start to like him. Enemies eventually become "sworn brothers".

Characters serve no other purpose than to help... more>> the MC grow and succeed. They're just conveniently there to help the plot trudge along.

Also, it's starting to get irritating how easy the MC gets others to believe in him. If he's wanted by a whole kingdom because he's accused of betraying humanity, it would be normal for people to feel skeptical if he were to explain himself. But unfortunately, the characters in this story don't think that far and takes things at face value. Even before the MC opens his mouth, they're agreeing and understanding. UGH.

I will continue reading since the story line isn't that bad.

Edit:
I'm really surprised this was the author's first novel. It's pretty good and kept my interest. Because it is kind of short when comparing it to novels like ISSTH, MGA, etc. this is a good mini-novel to read when you want to take a break from the novels with a massive amount of chapters. Also, I'm very grateful that the fights weren't dragged out. Some authors prolong those fights for amount 10+ chapters. The good thing about this author is that he doesn't prolong things unnecessarily. <<less

This will be my first review.

Well, you can definitely tell this is super early writings by TJSS because he's really feeling around blindly here as he writes the story. First off is the writing style, which is unlike any I've seen in any other novel I've read thus far. It's almost as if the MC is writing a blog about himself telling the story as it's happening. That statement will make sense when you read a few chapters in; the author can't decide if he wants events to happen in... more>> first person, as a retrospective, or third person. Many instances during a chapter, there will be some action that is described and dialogue you follow along which is met with an abrupt strange and vague statement like, "This place would be known well as the place that the Child of Light rose to prominence..." This is okay once in a blue moon when telling a story, but it is a constant occurrence that jars you from everything.

The premise itself is actually not too bad which is why I followed through with reading the entire story. A foreign world that uses westernized ideas of magic and our MC ends up having some rare innate abilities. While the setup is really nice, it falls apart a lot because the author never follows through on much. There are some elements like
Spoiler

his pet that he gets

[collapse]
which has a storyline that you can tell the author wanted to key in on since the foundations of the novel, but other things seemed much too rushed and not hashed out at all.

A good example is an older dude he meets who turns out to be a bandit and he befriends him. The author makes his grandiose vague statements about both of them achieving legend and fame together, but it's only ever said instead of shown. Interactions after first meeting the character are very cursory and shallow. The author sort of pieces together something he deems passable so he can rush to the part where he can
Spoiler

power everyone up

[collapse]
. Needless to say, if you think some of the other endings are rushed by this author, this will feel even worse.

The MC himself is a bit of a ditz, but mildly passable. It just felt like he never lived up to his namesake, which is the title of the novel. That's probably because of the rushing that I mentioned above. He's too naive for my tastes and I have to wonder again if this was in large part just the first in a line of experiments for TJSS to see what kind of character works best as a centerpiece to the novel. I imagine that a lot of scenes he had in mind to write out eventually fell apart because of this precise point. Because the MC is a bit lazy, ditzy and passive, he didn't leave himself enough time to incrementally change his personality to become the end product that we see advertised with every "The Child of Light's birthplace would become a sacred and holy place..."

It's quite unfortunate because I think things would be different if this were his 5th novel instead of one of his first ones. There was a good chunk to work with in the story, but it just didn't pan out. It lacks depth, width and most other dimensions essential for this and found myself just skimming through the end phase of the novel which I normally don't ever do. For that, it's a one-star. <<less

Actual Rating: 3.5

I have taken into consideration that this was TJSS's first novel and given the novel in its entirety, this rating. Warning: TL;DR ahead

I've read so many comments on this novel where they say how bad the writing is, how s*upid things are and I agree with those points but that doesn't mean the novel is absolutely horrific in any sense. Surprisingly, it became interesting in the second half and the ending gave me quite a shock. The epilogue did make me give my screen a deadpan look.

The writing... more>> wasn't ideal. It took me a while to realised the names were written [First name/Surname] order. The first volume was written with so much telling over showing, things just happened so simply. It broke the fourth wall I don't know how many times and even though it was written in the first person, we know what goes on when Zhang Gong (the MC) isn't there. When there's a character introduced who will play an important role later on, there's some kind of prophetic sentence at the end of the chapter and a 'SHOCK! WHAT WILL HAPPEN?! LEGASP!' sentence to finish it off. Amateur fanfiction writing there. It did get better. Events were fleshed out and there was more describing. The writing seemed to flow and wasn't as choppy and abrupt as before. That was until this certain chapter near the end where TJSS uses third person. Which then switches back to first person. I honestly prefer third person but that change made me uncomfortable. I did my best to ignore it. Sometimes differentiating between characters who had similar names or titles weren't clear so I got and stayed confused for so long until I had to stop and work out who was actually who before I moved on.

I had my problems with the world building and the logic of how things work. Like... the teleportation arrays. Do they stay after use? Disappear if it's not permanent? What happens to the traces then? Can't really comment on the cultivation system because seriously I usually just go with the flow and only pickup on contradictions within the, perhaps, flawed system. I should probably mention I turned off about 70% of my brain while reading this. It was a midnight binge read so I'm about half awake. Otherwise I'd be commenting and questioning things every other sentence written.

I liked the characters. Zhang Gang isn't as bad as many people think he is. I mean, can we please remember even though he goes through a lot, he's really only 22 when the big thing happens. He's a refreshing MC. Someone who doesn't try to kill every single guy he comes across even if they force him to. He's someone with charisma and kindness who befriends as many people as he can just because he wants to. He turns enemies into friends. Well, they do say guys become closer friends after a fist fight, right? He doesn't have an unsolvable enmity or hatred with someone the first or second time he sees them. Nor do other characters have that impression of him. There is not 'you cannot exist if I am to live' situation (except in the main plot) and the villains and people of opposition end up being somewhat likable.

Can I give a shout-out to Ke Lun Duo please? I love that guy. And one more thing.
Spoiler

I don't think I've read a novel in my entire life where the MC faints as much as Zhang Gong does. Seriously he should be dead from over-exhaustion or something.

[collapse]

I like how there were enough chapters to flesh out Zhang Gong's relationship with everyone, romance, bromance and filial love. The love in this novel goes through ups and downs and it's not perfect. Everyone suffers somewhat and I'm a sucker for these things. It was nice to see something that wasn't just 'I see you for the first time oh my god I love you I'll die for you nevermind I'ma leave you now' thing. Okay so there were bits and piece from there but the sacrifices made moved me. I'm a sap. So sue me.

The plot... Ahhh yes. It seemed so simple. A lazy guy who chooses an element no one else uses to have it easy but ends up being forced to shoulder a heavy burden. But he's not alone in all this. He has motives. Simple ones but those are the most realistic ones to me. Grand schemes and thinking so far ahead never seemed realistic unless the character was incarnated or just absolutely, shockingly, heaven-defyingly (?) smart. Yes he can be naive, simple and s*upid at times but he's a teenager who has experienced a comfortable life. There are a few events here and there that were just horrible uses of plot for a purpose. There were new characters who appear for a few chapters then disappear forever. Insignificant and a waste of chapters. However,
Spoiler

the final battle was probably what I loved the most about this novel. It was epic. I needed to read the whole thing in one go. The Monster King's appearance shocked me. It made the final battle all that intriguing because of the collateral damage to the plan the Monster King's appearance created. I liked the ending, even Zhang Gong's choice to stay mortal, choosing to give up everything in grief. Even the compromise that the God King and he had made. If TJSS had just left it there when Zhang Gong returned it would have been better. If he had left the dead, dead then the ending would have been so much more satisfying even if it left a scar on Zhang Gong. I swear that self-detonation should have damaged the soul. One character was essentially erased to give them that 'perfect' ending.

[collapse]

The ending was good, until a certain part which will make many go :| but not so bad it ruins it all.

If you're looking for a novel that has a badass character who plows through all his enemies without defeat, outsmarts the sh*t out of everyone, gets all the babes without problem and succeeds in every single thing they do then don't touch this novel. If you're looking for absolutely sublime writing with no outstanding plot holes or contradictions that you're not sure if they are contradictions then don't touch this novel. If you're like me and insist on reading this novel for the sake of reading all of TJSS's works, throw out all those ideas, preconceptions and expectations about xuanhuan and go with the flow. Enjoy it purely for the fun and maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. <<less

I could not take it anymore; I quit 9 volumes in and I wish I had the time I wasted reading this back. This is in no way the fault of the translation team. The novel itself is just boring.

The MC feels like he is a standard cardboard cutout. Supporting cast are about as well defined as a silhouette drawn by a 5 year old. Plot is extremely basic with no major turns or twists.

All in all this is a flat out case of uninspired writing. Do not make the... more>> same mistake I did and assume it will get better as the writer hits his stride. It doesn't. The mediocrity remains all the way until the end. <<less

This is one of the few stories that is really interesting in the beginning, but further on you just want to punch the MC in the balls/face for being a 1) Idiot (no logical sense in the story 2) A Pansy (goes through all this sh*t but can't grow a pair) 3) Always manages to f*ck this up more than it already is.

Also the writing isn't very interesting, it's basically being held up SOLELY on the other cast of characters besides the MC.

There is the tag Romance, but that is a lie it's actually BROMANCE.
I'm not against yaoi, but I feel like the author has some gay tendencies lololo

The story is quite slow paced, also the reader audience is <15 years old, there aren't any mature/gore/s*xual scenes, more like a Slice of Life Xianxia (If something like that exists)

oh man, this has to be the worst novel created by this author, I mean the story is really childish for a xianxia, and the MC is really to naïve, the bromance is tiring and sh*t happens for the sole purpose of happening, no explanation, I mean the MC only finds legendary crap because the author wants him to find legendary crap.
IMO this is a xianxia novel for children under age 13.

would have rated higher since the story setting was interesting however I had a lot of issues with the novel

  1. Chinese culture is way too embeded in the story that too much jargon an ideologies are used that can only be understood by those familiar with chinese culture and beliefs. Example.. "Cultivation" is generally a word used for farming and plants and such but china uses it im guessing as some sort of spiritual training idk. Another example are the jargons like meridians and other words that dont normally have english equivalents.
  2. The authors probably only thought of releasing this in chinese audiences and did not think of international audience im guessing. Hence the jargons
  3. Do chinese people obsess over physical good looks too much? The main character was written to be "good and kind hearted" but seems to have a very superficial concept of love and relationships and seem to believe that it is based on physical appearance. In the story he turned ugly and just because of that he chooses to abandon loved ones since he believes he is no longer a match for them due to face? Im like WTF! That very idea contradicts the way his personality is supposed to be which leads me to believe this is a chinese culture thing.
  4. Some world building is ommitted which leads to the lack of detail but the way it was written, again feels like this is a chinese thing where people would understand how it works and such if they are chinese.
I really feel this story like most chinese stories were written exclusively for chinese audience or those familiar with their culture. It depends too much on the assumption people already know how chinese mythology martial arts work.

On the positive note, it still has some monsters, magic and adventure so its an ok story I guess

Personally I would give 5 but trying not to be biased I gave it a 4. I read this 2 years before I put the review so I cant give a detailed one but off the top of my head I remember I loved this book. The plot is really good and isnt the normal novel cliches authors put. The comedy was great too and I couldnt help but smile. Romance was good too, but as the MC was the type who wants 1 wife so it seemslike every1... more>> else (when I looked through reviews) particully didnt like it because of the genre claiming its a harem but its not a heavy type like normal novels which is better I think since it is realistic and a slice of life. Reason I gave this a 4 however was because you could tell what the future plots/subplots were going to be as soon as you got a little info on it. You could tell the author was new when he was wrighting this and is probably his first book. The world is well thought of too which most novels tend to lack. Even though the wrighting was weak, the story was good enough to make people want to readm and that is how I feel about the book. <<less

I liked this novel at the start cause it was kind of funny that a lazy magician would become the best and I wanted to see where it would lead, but I just couldn't do the romance.

Spoiler

He comes back from his trip or whatever and joins the school again and meets a girl which he doesn't seem to like. He almost seems to hate her and tries to ruin her life. Then suddenly he just starts liking her. I'm pretty sure it took like 3-4 chapters max and their soulmates. Just seems more unrealistic than I can handle.

Also the MC is super childish. I thought he was supposed to be somewhat smart. I didn't really get that from his people skills.

The concept of the story is good but writing is nearly on childish level, the MC remains good hearted young man. Enough emphasize is not given on the topic of killing. His motivations for becoming strong is not clear enough, ZGW said he want to become strong to protect his parents and friends but their was not any danger to them at that point, how did he arrive at this conclusion? The writing, I don't know what to say]] It's very childish that he wants to make a a girl... more>> fall in love with him for revenge and why the heck did he didn't inform the authorities about his meeting with demon people at the start? What is it that makes protagonist special? He don't have any special qualities except being kind-hearted. Why is it that he has been chosen to save the world? The pacing of the story is very fast, It's not that I have a problem with it but I am not able to see his efforts behind his power and why the f*ck does he start crying every time he parts with his friends and family? I mean I understand he is going to be away from his loved ones but every f*ckING TIME::::{warm tears started flowing down his cheeks}

I am most dissatisfied with the relationship between Ma Ke Sai and Hai Yue Xing. It's not even a romantic relationship at this point, It's forcing. OKK you love her but f*ck this ZWG trying to create chances every time

Author's other novels are good but this one {{{{ HELL MEN}}} <<less

It is simply amazing but in comparison to other works of the author, it falls to deliver. There are a lot of plot loopholes but at the same time, it is important to understand that from this very novel author starts his universe and how other novels of him are connected.

Since the author did admit that this is his first novel, has a lot of weak part in his novel, so that's why there's a lot bad reviews. It does seem childish when I first read it but overall it actually not bad. It was still fun to read. The story is actually quite simple, the author trying to add a lot of suffering and ordeal to MC. The author really try hard. I read this because of manhua.

As for MC, he seems to be pitiful though. I don't really... more>> know what changes to his character after some ordeal. He is indeed naive, known being sensitive person, childish.. That part really didn't change throughout the story. I thought that if he went through those, he should be matured a bit, but he still dumb and becomes pessimist.. At least the author becomes better in character development in some other novels..

As for other characters.. Yes, I really like friendship in here, but not develop well.. The author focused on romance, not expecting harem in it. I meant I prefer MC to actually stay with one person, since the author wants to show that other girl sacrifice etc, so still it becomes harem.. Narration by MC sounds weird, maybe I'm not used to first person narration view as I always read third person view in a lot of chinese novel.

The fantasy setting actually my fav, the world where there's elves, dragons, demons, dwarves (only mentioned, since there's no statement about MC met one) living in same world as humans. And I having fun reading this because of comedy parts and the race setting there <<less

I loved it a lot!

I was hesitant to read it at first, but I found that once I started I couldn't really stop myself.

A lot of the story was stereotypical/generic, but I really liked the way it was written. There were some plot holes that never found resolution. The characters don't really grow on you that much, they pop out and grab you at certain moments, but they don't leave that deep of an impression.

The MC is a likable fellow, he's got a lot of flaws, and his change in... more>> attitude and way of thinking does somewhat change due to circumstance and changes in situation. I liked him. I was annoyed by how dense he was - the romantic aspect of the story was very...I dunno, it was like it was written by someone who had never been in a relationship before and based things on what he'd also read somewhere else. Amateurish romance, but it has that innocent quality to it that can grasp a few heartstrings.

Anyways, 3.5 to 4 stars from me as I genuinely enjoyed the experience, even though there were cringe moments, the MC wasn't as 'tr*sh' as he was initially described as, and the ending was very Deus Ex Machina. <<less

I like Child of Light. I mean, sure, the main character is lazy and it's like he didn't need to work for anything. Things go unbelievably well for him too despite the fact that he has not really honourable ulterior motives (yeah, yeah, ulterior already implies it's not honourable, but it feels worse when the ones being fooled think he's an honest guy) at the start on some situations. It's fun to read if you don't want too much drama (except for the Ma Ke thing). ... more>>
Spoiler

There's also the irony where the person he falls in love with is actually a demon, which means that the magic he majors in is her race's biggest weakness. He's also unaware of the fact.

....... Yeah. I kind of went on a tangent there but I hated the parts where said true love was featured. The novel is actually pretty good if you don't like drama too much or bloodletting. It's kind of easygoing, so I recommend it if you simply want something to pass the time and not get too bored. <<less
