I loved this book.

It started slow and draggy, the political stuff going way over my head. But as the plot progresses it pulled me in, and things got pretty interesting and compelling. Its themes of morality, cruelty and corruption are explored wonderfully. There is no needless angst or miscommunication tropes which is pretty common in other works of romance. Ironically, the romance is the weakest part of the story, but the plot more than made up for it. Hence the 4 stars. Extract the romance, and it becomes 5.

This book... more>> has some gut wrenching moments beautifully placed within the story. They are so devastating, will pull your soul out and leave you empty for a while. The ending is a little rushed. Honestly deserves another half star deducted for it, but giving it a 3 seemed too low. <<less

An amazing read as always from Priest novels. Most of what I wanted to say were said by others. The place where I differed from others is probably my view on Helian Yi. He is the Crown Prince. His entire personality was shaped around the throne. So, I don't mind what he did in order get the position. He is a great Emperor. However, as a love interest, he is terribly hypocritical and insincere. Even forgetting past lives, in the current life also, he likes a stand-in and compares a... more>> Prince of great foresight and vision to a singer. It's like his feelings are very cheap.

HLY thinks: Oh, I treasure JBY so much that I want to give up these mountains and rivers and eternally be true to him.

HLY does: Welp, the throne is important so I will go bang the stand-in. Wish JBY were this 'well-behaved' *sigh*

His behavior is so distinctively scum-like that I hate him as a love interest. He may be good for the nation and good for the people. But he was toxic to MC. On top of that, his past life just made me feel that he was revolting. I'm not expecting him to be nice to a dog, fox, plant and insect. But, being an Emperor is not an excuse to heap your part of the crimes on someone else and put them to death after squeezing everything of value from them. It was hypocritical to such an asinine level that he deserved to die in such emptiness.

Also, another place I have a different view is probably the relationship of the main characters. MC has a monologue where he explains how unused to he was in expressing real feelings. So he was not 'giving in' to Wu Xi's affection. He's not that kind of person. There are tons of people who like him. But it's only Wu Xi who touched him because he reminds JBY of himself. He thinks Wu Xi is irreplaceable.

Spoiler

He appeared to be thoughtless, lingering amongst bunches of flowers, but in truth, he wasn’t too used to expressing his own feelings in any way. Back when he liked Helian Yi, he quietly did countless things and shouldered a lot of blame on his behalf, but on the surface, he was as moderate as ever, and it instead seemed like Helian Yi did a lot more to maintain their relationship. At the very most, it was no more than ‘having you in my heart’ when he was alive, and ‘waiting for you at the Bridge’ after he died.

Perhaps Wu Xi thought that he had been keeping his distance. If he had, though, why did he never go to that brothel again because of what he had said? If he had, why would he make up his mind to send him out of the city when the time came? Why would he not spare to submit himself to him, calculating a bit of leeway for turning his relationship around with him in the future?

Only, that bit of leeway he left was apparently unnecessary... Jing Qi smiled bitterly on the inside. If he had known earlier, he would have just taken him ruthlessly that day, so he wouldn’t have any regrets when he went down Yellow Spring Road alone.

[collapse]

Basically, Jing Beiyuan is a Prince at any rate. Expecting him to be 'free' about being bottom when he is a calculative character at his core is just wishful thinking. Stop expecting ancients to have modern values. However, there were indicators where they actually switch in this relationship. Even during the first time, Wu Xi- gege was willing to be bottom. So I don't see the issues mentioned about positions in other reviews.

Since this one is one of the earlier novels written by Priest, I did notice that there were some pacing issues. Their schemes weren't enough for me. I needed more political intrigue to make their character settings feel real. It would've been better if it were a tad bit longer with more POVs about Helian Yi and gang scheming against others. The war could've been written in more detail. Because at the end of the day, Helian Yi didn't feel very awe-inspiring to me. That's really my only issue with the novel. Everything else was amazing. <<less

An amazing (Chichi is one of my favourite translators) translation of an intricately woven, melancholic, engrossing, character drama. This is not for the faint of heart but for those who enjoy complex characters, political intrigue, a look into life in ancient times (you'll feel grateful to live in these days), and emotional rollercoasters.

Highly recommended!

Throughout this book, I was hoping to get a glimpse of MC's backstory. Like what a lot of reviews mentioned, the romance between the MC and ML felt weak. The political intrigue was interesting at first, but as it dragged on, the story felt dull. Maybe the main CP didn't have a lot of chemistry together? MC has been in love with the crown prince for six lifetimes that he is jaded with relationships. Watching ML's one-sided love and doing all the work to woo MC felt MC's love for... more>> ML is shallow. I still wonder if the MC even likes the ML since MC mentioned before that he felt ML is like a son to him. I found myself dragging to finish the story to read about the past enmity between the crown prince. We don't get to see what happened, but it's implied that ML is a selfish person that is just doing things for his benefit. Thinking from another perspective, if this was another novel, people might like this overbearing crown prince even though he is a toxic person. I just can't find myself to hate him. It might sound controversial, but I think he had more chemistry with the MC. Both are scheming and ruthless. The crown prince does take care of the MC, but no one is perfect and his flaw is endless greed. He is the type of person that cares about himself before anyone else while MC devotes himself to the one he loves. He took advantage of MC's affection yet I found their relationship more interesting than the ML that popped out of nowhere. It felt like the author threw some random powerful ML to satisfy the MC.

The ML is great at fighting and intelligent but has the EQ of a rock. He loves the MC, but at the same time, he is also kinda yandere. ML lowkey is kinda like the crown prince, but the difference is he loves the MC and isn't that selfish. Sure the story doesn't follow getting back with the ex that killed you, but the ex in this story was more interesting than the ML. It might be a more interesting story if MC ended with nobody and just enjoyed his 7th reincarnation letting go of the past. I guess the MC didn't feel ready to take on a new relationship after years of getting heartbroken. Man, maybe it could be a bittersweet story of the crown prince and MC. They won't get together at the end because of past mistakes, but both yearn for each other. That sounds like angst, but feels more real than MC and ML relationship. <<less

I stopped halfway then completed it. I'm dumb so I can't understand some of their profound speeches. AND the MC was so tiring. He's so wishy washy. I won't read it again but it was nicely done. Do try Faraway Wanderers, that was great and the reason I tried this one.

So far my favorite novel from priest, out of Guardian, SPL and Faraway wanderers. Story is unique in its own way. It's heavy in politics, which's actually interesting and engaging. I have to say though, before reading I was a little hesitant since SPL political stuff bored me. I gave it a go anyways as it involves reincarnation and of shared universe with Faraway wanderers, which I'm so glad that I did. It didn't disappoint me even to the slightest. I loved MC, ML (he's so adorable! *.*), Their slowly... more>> bloomed love, even the flow of the story and humor. Also enjoyed the love triangle between MC, ML and mc's that apparently fated certain someone. For me it's simply a beautifully and a well written story.

This one is sort of like the prequel to the Faraway wanderers. It's not necessary, but I kinda felt for a better understanding in somethings, it'd have been great if I read this first since this also contain the backstory of Zhou Zishu, not detailed but certain important events are mentioned.

Also, there's this one thing I still can't figure out, those words from "magistrate" at the end of the first chapter. I thought I'll understand once I'm done with the novel but I'm still clueless 0.0. <<less

4.5/5 because while I think it was a great novel, it was too melancholic for my taste.

This is a story about reminiscence, regret, lost love and duty. It was occasionally morally dubious at times but characters were self-aware of that fact, and it was to be expected for a court politics novel anyways considering they're fighting for the throne. The story revolves around the MC's past, how he deals with this new chance at life considering his past regrets and lost love, as well as his sense of duty, both... more>> to his past and to his present. It laid out lots of hard truths that are often hard-to-swallow.

Typical of Priest novels, it started off slow as the whole plot and characters were built up. MC was reborn back to his "starting point", I guess where things really started to change for him in his past life. He met his past love again after so many years, and the novel talked about the mix feelings he felt. The sorcerer (shamanet in Chichi's translations) was also introduced.

As a court politics novel, the story then went on around the various schemes that MC and every other character in order for them to ascend the throne. MC had the slight advantage of knowing what had happened in the past, but this was not an overpowering advantage since things soon changed afterwards, especially since he decided to act differently from before.

Personally, I liked this novel more than Sha Po Lang, although it's mainly because court politics is more my cup of tea compared to war politics. However, this novel was more thought-provoking as it touched on the various considerations one had to make as one became an adult in ancient China. Things like duty, and the extent one might go (be it morally dubious) just to protect loved ones, or even "for the greater good".

Overall, an interesting read, but don't expect too much romance. Despite the fact that MC's whole rebirth literally revolved around his lost love, the romance part of the story was very little (although constantly given in little tidbits and was built up slowly so that's nice). Not a light read, I cried a little at some point when MC was making a hard decision. <<less

IMPORTANT: Go directly to Chichi's translation. You can get the whole novel in a PDF/epub. No need to scramble through the other translations.

Not the best of Priest's work, but not too bad.

Has a bit of a slow start and if it wasn't Priest I might've dropped it. The ML was charming and MC was okay. Felt a little unfinished in terms of relationships, I would've liked more closure honestly. I like that MC starts a new relationship in this new life, but because he avoided so much stuff and... more>> the previous love didn't say anything either, it felt a bit too frustrating at times. Especially since 'second chance' stories usually have more closure regarding what went wrong the first time around.

The ML carried the story through tbh, and they do make a good CP, so if you're a fan of Priest and want to read something shorter, this is a good read. <<less

Tragic and melancholic novel with a happy ending. Extremely plot heavy mostly about politics and schemes. Throughout the whole story, I only felt pity towards Jing Bei Yuan. It felt like all he wanted was peace and a relaxing 'home' for him to live the rest of his life but no! he had to plot and scheme in order to survive in that shitty place. I was honestly glad that he was able to meet Wu Xi, who he can relax with and speak honestly to. There was no need... more>> to hide his knowledge and abilities infront of Wu Xi and he was able to live like himself. Though I have to agree that the romance part of this story is extremely slow (since its plot heavy). But I think it is kind of more realistic that way? I meannn JBY spent 300+ years waiting/yearning for Helian Yi so you really can't expect JBY to suddenly move on to another person even if the other person treats him well or loves him a lot. I'm pretty sure that the moment he ended his 6th lifetime, his heart is almost dead and even if he felt that lingering love for Helian Yi, it is unlikely for him to act on it. So that super slow paced romance made more sense in JBY's situation.

The novel is honestly quite morally grey... the way the characters act and the things they do. Like doing something bad for the greater cause. It actually made it hard to hate a character.

Spoiler

Lastly, I utterly despise Helian Yi. Despite many parts of the novel stating that he had feelings towards JBY, his actions were horrible. Not only in their past lifetimes but also their current one. His suspicious and overly paranoid character constantly caused harm to JBY and I really disliked him because of it. In his first life, he claimed to have feelings for JBY and despite JBY doing so much for him and literally helping him to attain the throne, he ended up giving JBY the white silk for him to hang himself???????? In the seventh where all JBY wanted was to lead a simple and relaxing life and have nothing to do with politics, Helian Yi dragged him to do stuff he didn't wanted to do and had him stand on his side. When JBY started helping him to plot and scheme, he then became suspicious about JBY, causing him mental strain and making him have to act like someone he isn't. Oh gosh I feel so bad for JBY.

I just thank god for giving JBY Wu Xi in his 7th lifetime and

I would like to start my review by saying that I absolutely understand that this book is not for everyone. For some people, the pacing is too slow, or there's too much focus on court politics, or really anything else really.

Which is valid. I just disagree.

I could sing endless praises about this book, honestly. It holds a very special place in my heart. I could easily name this as my favourite book not just in the genre but in general. The plot is slow in the beginning, but that's what... more>> made it easy for me to understand everything going on. Characters are introduced with minimal but sufficient information on them, you learn more as the story goes on if you pay attention. Admittedly, having to read with full concentration just to pick up on every detail isn't the most delightful thing but I found myself doing it automatically without having to put in much effort because the story is so incredibly captivating.

But again, to enjoy it, it really has to be your type of book. Personally, I love politics and schemes. Some people don't.

The romance in this book is also quite satisfying and I love its divergence from the typical idea of soul mates and fate. They weren't just meant to be and therefore they became a couple, no, they chose each other. They chose to fall in love and spend the rest of their days together. And they deserve it. They deserve the whole world.

I find both the MC and the ML to be extremely well-developed characters that actually feel like they have a depth to them beyond "he ho we have main character halo now here's your s*x scenes" and their contrasting personalities are extremely amusing to watch in their interactions. Seeing how much they care for each other is so sweet.

I will read this book many, many more times. But hey it's okay if it doesn't suit your preference. <<less

I would love to go back in time and bring a copy of this book, except rewritten in traditional Chinese to some lovely neoconfucian scholar and watch them like one would a Victorian child given popping candy.
I was fascinated with how many references to classical literature there were in this book. To be clear I assumed this book, having been published as a web novel, would be the equivalent of a particularly good Wattpad story - a Wattpad story nonetheless. The amount of literary references quite shocked me (with... more>> the most strange one being two love poems by Mao being quoted - when the plot takes place in fantasy ancient China). I struggled to keep up with the plot a bit because there was a lot of political scheming and euphemisms - just like Wu Xi I found myself wishing they'd be more honest and say things clearly. I preferred this novel to Tian Ya Ke by far, it seemed more well-paced and maybe it's because I didn't have a good drama adaptation to contrast it with. The characters are each well fleshed out, the plot is complicated but intriguing and the romantic plot is just very cute. The main couple is great together, Wu Xi is an amazing romantic lead. Somehow it doesn't feel creepy despite the... age difference? Can we still call it an age difference when it comes to reincarnation? Hm...
The most shocking thing in the novel is when
Spoiler

you find out about the familial ties between Helian Yi and Jing Beiyuan. I was very shocked at that, didn't expect it, also I'm not entirely sure I understand the previous life - did Helian Yi kill Jing Beiyuan for being his half brother or was there an extra reason beyond the weird in*est?

[collapse]
Anyways I really enjoyed this book, laughed a lot, couldn't bring myself to stop reading at times. Definitely recommend reading this first and then getting to Tian Ya Ke. <<less

4.5* - it's really good, but not perfect

A bit heavy at first, but the translation is excellent and the prose is an absolutely delight. My first Priest novel, bu not the last!

The MC and ML are fleshed out, interesting characters. It's a plot-heavy novel with a focus on court intrigues and a fight for power, with romance as a side-plot.

... more>> Not for the faint hearted. While there aren't any explicit R-rated scenes (except one very brief bed scene), there are some heavy themes and grim side plots. Mature subject matter.

The MC and his friends are morally grey characters, and one theme in the story is how far it's morally justifiable to go - what crimes are okay to commit if you're doing it for the greater good? And the story doesn't give any easy answers.

The romance could have been fleshed out more, although the description of how the ML falls in love is very well-written. The premise - a man who failed to get together with his fated partner through six lifetimes is given a new chance and reborn into his first life in his seventh lifetime - is very interesting, but doesn't add much to the story. Still, this book is leagues above the novel danmei webnovels in terms of writing style and characterization. <<less

4.25 rating leaning towards 5.

Enjoyed this story and it didn't take long to finish it!

Wu Xi's sincerity and straightforwardness won me over from the beginning!!!

... more>> This is a lighter version of Rebirth: Degenerate S*ave Abuses Tyrant so if you couldnt read that one because of its darker themes then this one is probably a better fit for you!

The only thing that I felt lacking in this story is a deeper understanding of Jing Qi's past life and any main events that happened in it, because the author literally didnt give us anything. We only get a glimpse of what happened in that life from Helin Yi's POV in the last extra which honestly wasnt enough for me.

I need to see how much he loved him and how deep the betrayal felt but in this story I couldn't since it wasn't told to us.

I think that might be why I was never attached to nor hated Helin Yi until the end. Because I freaking need to know what, how and why he wronged our MC for me to actually judge him. Whenever I read an ancient palace story I am always wary of all the princes/emperors because most of them are all illustrated as people who are very distrustful and dont put much emphasis on love or at least they always put power before that. This was also how Helin Yi was described.

Tbh I strongly doubt the initial fate of 7 lifetimes as lovers that the author had said at the beginning of the story. At least show me something that will make me believe that lol. <<less

4.5/5 ? I don't know how I feel, but you should give it a spin anyway?

This is a melancholic historical romance/political intrigue story with a smidge of other genres thrown in (reincarnation and wuxia). Reincarnation is used as a vehicle of angst, and the MC does not use it to foresee everything (as reincarnation is typically used for in webnovels). Wuxia is so minimal that it's not even in the genre tags for this page.

Lord Seventh is a diamond in the rough. The plotline was rock solid, the turning points,... more>> the major events. The court politics were banger actually... one of the better political plotlines that I've read from webnovels. The main character cast was amazing, complex, morally gray (alright... evil), and quite heart-wrenching. I hate Helian Yi, but I came out of the novel fully understanding his character.

Unfortunately, even though the above holds true, it barely fit inside the 76 chapters. Lord Seventh is very compact. I didn't feel like I, as the reader, progressed through the story smoothly. Instead, I feel like I was glancing at key moments in the story every so often. The story spanned over a decade, and I couldn't pinpoint what age characters were when events happened. There were very few "filler" events to flesh out the story. Even though I could see the relationships developing between characters over the years (by events), I couldn't feel the depth of the relationships being developed. This made it quite hard to get invested in the characters because the story is centered around angst, and the buildup to it was not expanded on enough.

The end result is that I finished Lord Seventh feeling quite confused. I liked it enough. It was a thoroughly complete story. There's a lot missing, but the stuff that's missing is usually there in mediocre webnovels, and the stuff that's not missing is rarely ever there in mediocre webnovels.

tl;dr Novel pretty good. Definitely a politics novel. Needed more chapters. <<less

Usually I dont like reading historical stuff, as I am lazy to read lengthy paragraphs. But I grew to like this. From beginning to end there isn't a part I hated reading.

Casual revealing of hints on which and who the characters were before. I like the plot twists. The slow built-up of the romance was executed nicely. = ̄ω ̄=

Much better written than Faraway Wanderers imo

Don't understand how Beiyuan fell in love with Wu Xi when he always treated him like a kid. It wasn't really clear to me at least.

On that note, novel started off from Beiyuan's perspective, but the perspective changed a lot and randomly, so it was sometimes a little jarring.

Happy to see more of Zhou Zishu and the Crown Prince.

Overall, still a great novel with lots of intrigue, love, and complicated characters.
