After entering high school, “Ice Lady” Himuro Fuyuka moved to a room next door to Kagami Asahi, who started living alone in an apartment which was just a short walk away from the nearest station.

She always kept her distance from everyone, never spoke to anyone beyond what was necessary, and always maintained a straight face. A lady that was as cold as ice or so Asahi thought.

“..I can’t eat anymore, munyamunya…”

“Where did the ‘Ice Lady’ go…?”

The relationship between the two of them continued with a mysterious connection.

They share dinner at night, go out together on holidays, and eventually whisper sweet things to each other.

Staying beside the blunt but caring Asahi, the ice that covers Fuyuka slowly but surely melts away.

I don't know which was first but this is way too similar to Otatenshi for my liking. If it was just the plot setting, it would be fine but the MC, the Heroine and even the MC's friend are basically the same with just a few tweaks here and there.

I am not saying it is bad but keep this point in mind while reading.

When I first read in the reviews that this was very similar to 'otonari no tenshi', I thought it was in the same way that I've read in the reviews of other novels like this, where it was actually very distinct and the only similar parts were the setting and stuff that I really enjoyed. I thought they were reviews that wouldn't reflect on my experience. I was wrong.

This is too similar to 'otonari no tenshi'. It isn't the exact same, and there's enough difference in the characters and circumstances... more>> that it feels like this could be a good story that would hold its own, it just... isn't. And it only gets more similar over time, using the exact same story beats, general events and pace of otonari, even if with changes in the details. The characters feel different but not enough.

The weird thing is, that I actually liked a lot of the changes that were made here, to the point where I might recommend this over otonari depending on how it develops in the future. But it still kinda sucks to read right now because it feels more like someone decided to rewrite a story you've already read rather than it being a new story on its own, which for some might not be that bad of a thing, but for me it heavily hurts the experience.

I don't really know how to rate this, should I give it a 1 since it's basically just a knockoff? But it does improve on the things it changes... I guess a 3 is fine. <<less

'Angel next door' knockoff with better balance in between couple, which is good. But constant switching between 1st and 3rd person narrator is mind blowing and tiring. Seriously, it would use some proper editing and rewriting.

Spoiler

Just look at this:

"The curry and rice were finally finished and were lined up on the table, and I almost opened my mouth more than I could count.

Her ineptitude and carelessness were far worse than Asahi could imagine, and it was quite painful for him to remain indifferent.

The only thing that saved me was that Fuyuka used the cat's paw, thanks to my persistent reminder."

My brain hurts, sentences are translated one to one without consideration to context. It looks like MTL done by someone who don't speak english.

I read all of the official volume 1 light novel, which was an excellent translation. I know people compare this to Angel Next Door, but I prefer this one. The two's dynamic is much more balanced with give and take (him helping her but also her helping him much more equally than just sharing an initial umbrella), and there's a more satisfying feeling of the two becoming very gradually closer despite the FMC having a very cold, distant start.

I highly recommend it as superior to Angel Next Door and much... more>> more satisfying too. <<less

The novel thus far is not bad per se, however, it does read exactly like 'Otonari no Tenshi' with some attributes swapped between the characters. The meddling best friend with poor grades and a girlfriend, who prompts the MC to change his appearance as he is attractive under his bangs. The ice-cold love interest, the MC with good grades as a condition for living alone, as well as the MC who lives right next to the love interest. It is Otonari No Tenshi except this time, the MC can cook rather than the love interest. It's not necessarily bad, but it doesn't change much if anything.

I don't like comparing this genre with Otatenshi but you have to do it with this one since it's the same thing. Some things are better written in this one, but at the same time, some are worse.

This one is seriously annoying. The side characters are good but the MC triggers me. He has absolutely no reason to hold up his confession that much, he doesn't have any trauma or anything that can hold him back, and seeing how insecure he is is disgusting. If you are always watching the... more>> person you love and you interact often with them, you should have no trouble realizing the nuances of language they have towards other people. He's just a coward with a feeble resolve, not many characters make me want to punch them. If you like someone JUST FREAKING TELL THEM FFS, HOW TF DO YOU EXPECT TO GET YOUR FEELINGS ACROSS.

I could rant about this one a long time, but I rather keep it short.

I'm not saying "don't read it" but there's not to much value in reading it if you are up-to-date with Otatenshi. <<less

Honestly this is just a worse and way more drawn out version of Otonari no Tenshi. After like a 40~ arc which included the usual cliche of "rival" confession, they accept their feelings for each other but decided to keep being the way they were already before the arc so it feels completely pointless. It left me with the feeling that I should have just read something else and not follow this novel.

Not to mention, the fMC and MC are way less interesting than any other character in the novel,... more>> to the point where the author realised that we barely know anything about them apart from their cooking skills / food they like + some basic family stuff. Hence the author's decision to not have them become a couple even after 90 chapters. <<less

I found this novel great and I was wondering why the ratings were low. From the reviews I read most of them say that this novel is similar to Otonari no Tenshi-sama (The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten). How to Melt the Ice Lady compared to Otonari no Tenshi-sama is better in my opinion. The reviews in Otonari no Tenshi-sama says that the story is dragged or repetitive. Meanwhile based on my readings of How to Melt the Ice Lady, this novel isn't repetitive so far and has more... more>> realistic romance developments. In my opinion you should read How to Melt the Ice Lady, before reading Otonari no Tenshi-sama because if you read Otonari no Tenshi-sama it will make the experience of this novel worse.

This review is probably just biased of me but I like actually good story development unlike pure sugar shitty cliche story development. If you just want pure sugar you can go read Otonari no Tenshi-sama. Also the only 5 star reviews on Otonari no Tenshi-sama I read were saying that they liked it for the pure sugar of the novel. The other reviews just said that the story was sh*t and was being dragged. The reason why the ratings of How to Melt the Ice Lady is so low probably because people read Otonari no Tenshi-sama first and thought that it was similar to Otonari no Tenshi-sama which ruined their reading experience.

By the way the term sugar just means a cute story with heartwarming scenes that will make you smile or something like that idk. <<less

a good ol reliable 7/10

tltr:

Its quite simple honesty, its not complex nor conveluted, a nice little story about falling in love, and how it changes oneself and how it affect us and others

read it if you have free time and want a nice story, dont expect crazy backgrounds or plotwist

Details:

    • Story:
Spoiler

To be honest, quite a simple story, but hey, sometimes less is more, its a good palet cleanser after reading some of the lesser versions of the popular/loner trope, just be ready to read on the doubting feelings of the MC, even so a bit grounded they can become a bit repetitive (ex: what if she doesnt love me? Etc) you can guees, but the nice part is that he actually grows and becomes bolder.

The other part is that the general plot is somewhat laking, you think we will learn and use the female lead past and problem as a main plothook, but sadly is not, so they used the act of confessing as the final hook, not the best, not the worst.

[collapse]

    • Characters:
Spoiler

The MC and the Female lead

The most detailed part of the story, especially the character of the protagonist, I would have loved to see more of his family dinamic, on the other part, there is a notable lack of background on the female lead, just the basic; mom died, father doesnt care. Truth be told, the author could had use this lead to take the story foward, but didnt, a shame really, it had potential

You can say that there are at most 4 other characters (not counting both the MC and the female lead) who are relevant to the story:

Best friend A//gilfriend of best friend A

Simple, not the greatest story, we never learn about how the became friends with MC.

They just help guiding the MC, in other words, help the plot move foward, not that deep really.

Romance rival A // Romance Rival seeker

Eh, not the brithest part of the story, not really a driving force behind the idea, and used as the final step to make the MC confess, they actually kinda arent bad people, jsut a guy in love so not the greatest rival, the rival seeker, actually functions as friend to the MC to help him recognize his own feelings

It's like another version of Angel Next Door except the boy is more competent and the girl isn't as cute. It's too similar to be honest but I do prefer Angel because it has way more fluff. Not to say this is bad or anything, because this is very good too. The dynamic is more balanced and believable then Angel where the boy is useless but sweet af. The characters are so similar too. Personality wise they are all just a copy of Angel's characters from the friends to the... more>> MCs. Man this is a terrible review lol. My point is if you read one or the other right after you finish one, you will love the one you read first and fail to fully appreciate the second because they're so damn similar. Still worth a read though. Only 188 pages. <<less

That was a rollercoaster.

First 20 chapter was like - wow nice.

20-50 - too slow

50-99 - this little sh*t MC is the denseast dumbf*ck on the earth, should be NTRed and hit by the truck, reincarnated and r*ped by goblins.

This is rare, when you rooting for second male lead, but MC doesnt deserve for your symphaty, and for FL.

Srsly - last 50 chapters were pain.

It's a pretty sweet and slow romance. It's generally well implemented and when the relationship develops their interactions are quite cute. There's a good ~50 chapters of dead time between when the MC decides to confess and when he actually confesses, which kinda drags the novel on unnecessarily, but once you get past that it retains its charm. Overall, a pretty solid 4/5 romance.

I read this first before otonari no tenshi. And I wouldn't expect that I would love this one. I do notice some people keep on comparing them and there's no denying the fact that they're similar. A reverse version of each other. I love how they're relationship develops from a stranger to being close to each other. Reading this is very much satisfying, I can't even control myself from smiling. Anyway, I'm really not in the mood to write a review but this novel is certainly good and worth my... more>> time. <<less

it's totally like a remake of oyonari no tenshi. From characters to settings to pretty much everything. It's not a bad novel though. It is decent if you ignore the obvious plagiarism

I read the LN and yea, it's structurally the same as otonari no tenshi but slightly better I guess. I feel invested in the characters even though like 3/4ths of the volume was the girl being an as*hole for no reason and the dude treating her with gloves so he doesn't piss her off. The ending is satisfying enough to wash away all that.

In terms of translation the WN needs a lot of editing. The changes of POV just takes me off the experience. I get that's just the limitations... more>> of MTL but I'd rather pass on it <<less

Improve and better version of Otonari no Tenshi that I have dropped before I even finish half a volume (I don't really like the ML). The character is very similar to each other except the MC is not incompetent and the author reverse the role of the ML and FL. The story is quite realistic differented from the BS twisted reality I have came across so far. Fair and appropriate amount of sugar (I'm glad that I don't have to smile like an idiot). The official translation did a great... more>> work too, there's even a note from translator to help understanding the novel even more. Unfortunately it's just a short story many things had been cut out to elaborate the story or else it could have been better. <<less
