Ethan, the former secretary working for the Energy Bureau of Earth Union, was detained in a place called ‘Forbidden City’ after being deprived of his moral value points for committing treason. Everyone in the city is tr*sh among humans. They have to continually go on specified hazardous and terrifying missions for the sake of atonement and to exchange moral values points. If their moral value points reach 100 one day, they would obtain a chance to be released from the Forbidden City and return to the world of the humans to restart their lives as a human. But it was said that once someone enters the Forbidden City, no one can come out alive.

Ethan just wanted to live, but from his first mission, he felt like he had descended into a whirlpool of terror. In front of these huge monsters that could devour the entire universe, he can only keep falling.

This novel is inspired by Lovecraftian horror.

Pros :

The MC deserves all the love in the world. Imma cry for this cinnamon bun. I think we all agree that at first, we want MC to lose his mind and go cray. But after everything that MC has went through, he deserves so much more.

The ML is sus, still is. I don't rlly like him. Sure he's hot and has 3 eyes and an alien priest, just more reasons to make him hot. But I don't like how he see MC as a goal?? Like everything about him... more>> is dangerous. Kinda made it up at the end tho.

The side characters left long lasting impression. The omega x omega pairing is unexpected, I never see that pairing where both of them are aggressive and loveable at the same time.

The author likes to make us suffer with the characters. Doesn't hesitate to un alive the characters. The ending is an open one but I cried. There's so much emotions and I just want my bby to live happily and let go of the past. I am officially a mom fan.

The world building is nice, coupled with the abo dynamics. It's a nice setting. The mtl is surprisingly easy. Translations by CG are top notch.

Cons :

The ending like whyyy but it kinda fits the vibe the novel is giving. Kinda hope the author make some extras or maybe a sequel. <<less

Sometimes, I crave to read a novel that's full of tragedy, hopelessness, and blackening (after all, Mary/Gary Su/Stu's are a dime a dozen these days). This novel delivers on all these aspects, please trust me on that. Not only is the MC hit with hopeless and tragic situations one after another, the author ruthlessly serves bentos, which is a nice change of pace.

The only drawback, in my opinion, is the way the bentos are served. I feel like the author could have drawn out even more negative emotions and heart... more>> wrenching feelings, but it fell slightly flat on me. I did get a bit emotional near the end, but perhaps it's due to my frequent readings of tragedy novels, it was more of a mellow melancholic feeling.

5 stars for scratching the itch of action+gore+tragedy, -0.5 stars for the above reason. Overall 4.5, pretty good read! <<less

My heart throbing hurts by this. I've crying non stop at climax story. For betrayel one after another one, losing people his dear one after another one and left he alone. Feels kinda like Mo Dao Zu Shi, full of betrayal and what left in MC is hatred and sadness and want to destroy all universe.

I... don’t know if my heart is tranquil or it’s wrenched at the moment. Thank you so much for translating this novel, it was such a wonderful journey, it was always surrounded by a dark filling, but positive/pure emotions emerged from time to time making you more and more attached to it. I believe this is a story that stays engraved in your heart forever, the kind that will make you utter sighs filled with complex emotions every time you recall it. I will miss Ethan so much and Tanisiel... more>> too T^T I love their love and want them to live happily ever after and till the end of the universe and beyond!!! I want to hug Samuel and Schneider even if they are worms that may take my life, I don’t care, I want to pet them I also want them to be a happy worm family forever and ever and more T^T

I can express how thankful I am for your hard work translating, editing, proofreading, etc. (And writing, for the author :3)

This novel is simply gorgeous, I won’t ever get over it, I can’t believe it had come to an end, I’m already starting to miss it, but I’ve got no regrets. Thank you again, this book is wonderful. <<less

My honest opinion, first of all I think the reviews here are a tiny bit overrated.. In fact I find it really hard to rate this novel.

Lets say it is well written, the horror aspect and the adventures as well as the plot are interesting and I found myself absorbed into the story. Although at times I felt some lines were little repetitive.

On the other hand the characters are the source of annoyance. I dislike the main character. Too weak minded and easy to manipulate. Even after he blackened, he... more>> 'followed the plot'. Furthermore both he a his lover have daddy complex (especially his lover) and although im not a psychiatrist its clear to me they have depression and some other issues. Until the end I still had doubts as to their relationship and whether their feelings were really love (especially the ML).

I think the ending is rather good though. Kind of open ended but hopeful. I liked the way the author finished the story.

Conclusion, I enjoyed reading it although I found myself annoyed at the MC and just wanted to read it to the end as soon as possible. I recommend trying it but I don't think it suitable for rereading. <<less

Have elements of Lovecraftian Horror. So you'd better be prepared being disgusted at the descriptions in the novels.

I'm just... My heart hurt reading Abyss. In the end, everything is predetermined and our leads are just chess pieces in the eyes of the omnipotent gods.

... more>> At most, Abyss is a hopeful ending novel imo. It's not a bad ending, but nothing about the cruelty of the galactic unions are resolved and our main characters ending aren't exactly free and happy. No extras don't help either 😭😭..

What I dislike from Abyss:

a bit hard imagining some of the scenes, maybe it's because CG is an edited MTL translation so some things aren't that well explained in English. Also Lovecraftian Horror needs some prior knowledge in looks, so I recommend to search the images of the gods whenever they appeared. The disgusted feeling adds the reading experience after all.

What I like (A bit spoilery in terms of characterizations) :

  • Ethan may be a weak beta, but boy, his resilience and adaptations ability is strong. My heart aches because he totally didn't deserve all the sh*t that's happened to him. He just wanted to live and have someone love him wholeheartedly. He's not kind, but he knows who's friend and who's enemy. Once he regards someone as his, he'd fight for them till the end, even if said person betrayed him. Imo, he's very human, he's not necessarily cruel to strangers. Always keeping his distance and only when they provoke him he'll bite back. He knows that he's weak and need to do anything to survive. Even to Tanisiel, he knows he's fallen for him, but keep his expectations low because of his experience and the fact that they just using each other for their own gain. His despair and slow descends into madness tho, too painful 😭😭. He's now on my #needtobundleandprotectshou list
  • Tanisiel is BIG SUS. But you'll understand why he did those things. And I like how he's actually quite honest about his intentions (while he omitted some things ofc).
  • Samuel and Schneider are the epitome of gender does not define you. And love comes in whatever form.
The novel tells us that no matter how cruel and scary the unknowns are, still the cruelest ones are human. Using someone, then betraying them. Collective hate on someone that you didn't even know that well. The pleasure of looking down on someone below you. But deep down, they don't want to be treated like that.

The gods are well, gods. Just like those gods from Greek mythology or any other mythology, they don't care about what will Ethan and Tanisiel feel. And it's always been emphasize in the novel that in front of such an omnipotent figure of the universe, what's the meaning of a human's meager life?

Abyss is a pretty underrated novel. As most ppl don't really read the CH sci-fi settings. But if you're looking to be tortured mentally do give it a shot. <<less

This novel requires very high imagination power, otherwise it will be a monotonous reading.

Spoiler

None of the characters are loyal to MC, not even ML, so it's better not to expect much from him. (But don't worry, in the end ML and his friend, Samuel, are the ones who really feel the guilt for MC)

[collapse]

The ending is pretty good! Although it hangs, but does not make people feel restless. However, it was the best choice because living in the real world only made the MC suffer.

SF, Lovecraft's monsters, love and hopelessness. Awesome combination. Usually I'm not into ABO, but this one has inters*x and trans characters and that makes this whole dynamic much more bearable.

Little bit depressing if you are optimistic about humans as a species

I cannot get over this novel. Gosh! It's been a day since completing it but I just keep feeling it. This complex mix emotions I am feeling. I don't know whether it's because the out of the comfort zone amd new things I'm experiencing (it's my first day at new school) or this novel affected my reality. And so to calm myself down and let myself a bit more at ease, I decided to stay awake (even though the 2nd day of school tom-- which I definetly agree is a... more>> bad decision) at 1:30 AM to review this novel.

Plotline. It's the story that I never knew I needed. It is gory, exciting, sexy, nerve-wrecking, sad, bittersweet, super duper sweet especially after all the horror, sadness the bad emotions. It is just so good. The story involves things kinda rare to find in bl novels and they made an unexpected beautiful mix like the ABO betaxalpha with them being different races, inter**x, omega/betaxomega, moral system, forbidden city, with character ML. Writing this I had thought a perfect adjective. Madness, and amidst that madness there is the blooming passionate love between Tansiel and Ethan. And also the side cp.

Madness. Fragility. Love.

Urgh my writings kinda doesn't make sense.

Characters. The characters have characters, specially the main ones and the sides. They all have part in the story, They are all affected by their causes and effects, which really made the reading thsi exciting and pulse drumming experience.

A perfect note from Tansiel.

"No one is special."

and Yep, true to his words no one was special, even the main characters. No one was exempted from being affected by the rules of the universe or the higher intelligent beings. Maybe the advantage, the only power that Ethan and Tansiel can held against those Gods/monsters os their love.

THEIR LOVE WAS SO FRAGILE YET SO STRONG.

Oh my god, I have written many things (I know not so that much) and it's getting late, and I keep missing it. I also have problems with my tummy, so I'm really really uncomfortable right now (and I have to wake up 5:00 AM.) And I want to miss them, I want to always remember them. Although I might have said it for another sotries and ended up kinda forgetting them... But I really want to rememeber this, this feeling, the story, the characters, the hardships and the sweetness, spicyness. I HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO SAY BUT FOR NOW THIS IS IT. SEE YA AGAIN.

Fast Edit:

I just like all your reviews ya'll. And I also cried a lot. But the ending, I just cannot cry iver the ending (except from realizing it's the ending). Because first, I cannot see a more suitable another ending and second I'm happy that they are together. I'm sure you all too. I'm happy that they were able to find solace within each others embrace. In fact, I'm a little bit jealous of them, they have someone like that. Because of this, I am more determined to make my family stronger since I'm still young and don't want a relationship yet. (you know what, actually I do after this novel, but I know that I'm still dumb and irresponsible, look at me now!)

I'm in a threshold of a new life right now, but I just wish I can integrate myself in this bl novels and emote all day long, bathe myself with dopamine from their stories. It's 2 now so byeeee. I know I'm gonna regret staying up this late later. again, see you again! <<less

This was a pleasant surprise of a read, I didn't expect to like it this much!! It's a mix of ABO, scifi/interstellar and lovecraftian horror? I definitely wasn't expecting that, but the author makes it so believable. I also usually avoid ABOs just bc they tend to be written kind of ridiculously, but again, author wrote it in a way that actually makes sense and feels realistic.

Plot was interesting, and took me for a ride I could not even predict.

I LOVE ethan. He has my entire heart, and I wish... more>> he could be happy for the rest of his life. He deserves it fr. Also love ML! I couldn't tell at first which he was but then it kind of started to fall in place. I liked that we didn't feel like we could trust him at first, and to the very end of it we were always kind of on our toes about how ML and MCs relationship would end up, but I think it's a good thing, since we're basically feeling how MC feels abt it.

Spoiler

also have a love/hate relationship w/ samuel and pretty much everyone around ethan. give that man a break ok??? he's been used and abused by everyone in his life smh. Had high hopes for Samuel but in the end society got to him too.... the worm ending w/ little rafael was very cute tho and kind of a creative way to still give those two their own "happy" ending :')

absolutely recommend if you like when the romance is mixed in w/ intense plot. Oh and lots of gore and body horror so beware. :) <<less

a solid 5/5 for me its amazing the worldbuilding the plot the theme the characters everything I loved loved it to the last bit. Its the kind of story that ill remember in the distant future time to time again because the impact is huge on me. I went through a lot reading this the despair the pain the HORROR the fear agony joy, I felt it all along the characters. The MC, Ethan is a well built character hes real and hes human in every way possible, I understand... more>> his pain his reason his actions and I will do the exact same thing as what he did. Whereas for Tanisiel, he icked me at first because hes always appear mysterious and hiding lots of secrets which he did and I hated him for doing that but I grew to love him as well as later one we knew that everythinf he did was for the sake of ethan. I had a hard time immesring myself in this story because it was packed PACKED. Its scifi interstellar abo horror and thriller delivered in one go but it was done so so well. To me its OE but more to HE I was crying tears of joy reading the last part because I knew that their story dont end there, theres more to come but they will still be together till the end. Like I said I love it so much I can see myself revisiting this story now and then because they occupied a part of my brain an heart from now on <33333 <<less

I don't like the ML and MC dynamic.

Spoiler

I feel like the author shoul've stick to the omega and beta pair rather than that of another boring beta and astonishingly gorgeous drop dead handsome alpha. I get it but I LIKED SAMUEL AND ETHAN dynamic coz I feel like they're relationship would've add so much angst to the novel. I thought they're the ML and MC. I highly anticipated how they would become as a couple but MEH. I am incredibly disappointed how the author did Samuel dirty. Samuel's right. Ethan's a wh*re.

[collapse]

Anyway it's a great novel. The flow, the angst, the back story is a Chief's kiss. I like the beginning. It's an amazingly done novel. <<less

I've never write a review before but after reading this, I think that I do need to share my experience. I've been looking at the story for so many time but never have the desire to read it. But, when I did it worth your time. The story gave you an emotion roller coaster. I shed tears. Do give it a try. The love is different but realistic. The feeling that's in this story is rich.

My favourite book ever. Of everything I've ever read.

Every few months, I'll be lying in bed, and I'll start thinking about it again. Lovecraft was so afraid of the unknown, but this story takes his mythos and asks us to consider if the unknown can also be a source of hope.

My thoughts on the ending:

Spoiler

It's happy. The MC and ML are completely free to dream of their life together, and may emerge again someday as something totally new. It's only horrifying from the perspective of the totalitarian government.

For whoever is reading this, lots of tears. I teared up multiple times while reading this story. The universe is sci-fi and ABO. MC is taken in to a city as a prisoner, and experiences hardships throughout his time there. I had a hard time getting into this novel, and only picked it up when I was bored to the extreme, but I would say that the tension and build-up to the ultimate climax was worth it. This novel is def a tragedy, and there was multiple times I had... more>> to cross my fingers and hope a certain character or someone else wouldn't die. There is also a lot of tr*sh humans in this novel, no hate or spoilers or anything, just be prepared to get pissed the f*** off!! ML is an alien, obvi hot, alpha, blonde, doting, and a priest! If you hate horror though, def don't read this bc there are a lot of gruely scenes that might be hard for some users to go through. The novel translator does provide summaries for the extra gorey scenes in case some people can't handle it. One thing I disliked was the big emphasis on genders such as beta, alpha, omega, and the standards that are withheld within them. It reminded me of our society and the standards for each gender and I honestly disliked the constant mention of it. For example, " alphas and omegas tend to think everything is about them" like there may be nothing wrong with that in your opinion, but it was just something I found annoying which popped up for a while.

SLIGHT SPOILER IN REGARDS TO MAIN COUPLE
Spoiler

okay, slight rant here, but though I loved the novel overall, I disliked how the MC had a huge reliance on the ML which kind of faded away at the end. I hated how the MC always regarded the ML as a God and Savior and not just someone with the same emotions and pain. It also ricked me off too when the ML controlled the MC's feelings. Like sometimes I found myself wondering if what the MC thought was okay really was what he thought or if it was influenced by the ML.

[collapse]

BIG SPOILER DON'T READ IF HAVEN'T READ YET
Spoiler

the amount of hardships the MC faces, HONESTLY GIVE THE POOR BABY A BREAK! WE LOVE TANISIEL BUT AT THE SAME TIME, WHY DID HE HAVE TO USE POOR ETHAN LIKE THAT. There is honestly a type of incongruence in the way he is able to give up with father for Ethan even after he is almost near the breaking point. Now I know that ML himself is given a monologue about his feelings, I think that it does feel incongruent with the ML we know and his personality. Like one would think he would do anything he could to achieve his goal, but he last minute decides to opt out.

I wanted to like this one, I really did. The setting is interesting and I'm a sucker for non-A/O pairings, but...I just really don't like the main couple!

Spoiler

There's a bit of a love triangle with Samuel, Ethan, and Tanisiel, and I was holding out hope for Samuel/Ethan because I honestly just like Samuel more than Tanisiel, and I felt that Samuel's unique circumstances made him a more fitting endgame for Ethan's hang-ups. It's just...a little disappointing when the MC whines about Betas and Omegas not being aggressive enough with him, and the story gives him an aggressive Omega but he still ends up with the Alpha. When it became clear that Samuel was just third-wheeling them, I started losing interest, so I ended up looking up the endgame couple to see if it was worth it to finish this and... nope :/
