The Regressed Demon Lord is Kind

My whole life, all I wanted was power.

I churned the world into rivers of blood and eventually gained the title, ‘Demon Lord of Strength’. However, all this became useless when I lost to a party of heroes.

But what can a loser say? As I laid dying, I was forced to listen to the hero’s gibberish:

“If you are born again, I hope that you will live a kind life!”

But huh? When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the past.

“What do I have to do to live a kind life?”

This is the beginning of an ex-Demon Lord’s journey to live a ‘kind’ life.

I'll be honest I didn't expect much from this novel. I saw the title and thought.

'Welp let's give it a shot.'

And I'm happy I did. Zich, the main character is absolutely a treat to read. He's sarcastic, manipulative and a pretty likeable character. I've read a ton of KR Webnovels and this one is definitely up there in quality. Even the side characters are memorable, a shocker really. Only Second Coming of Gluttony managed to do this so that was a treat. Hopefully you'll enjoy this novel as much as... more>> I do. Give it a shot cause it keeps getting better and better the more you read. <<less

A waste of time, I think a 12 years old would enjoy this. There is no aim in sight for this novel, the MC just wander around trying to be 'kind' but not really he just go around beat people.

Plus when he fight, he talk way too much. One action followed by full 3 dialogues back and forth between him and the enemy. And the strategy he come up with are super cringe.

Enemy : You lose!

... more>> Him : Hahaha no way I called back up!

Its like the author have no imagination how to overthrow the enemy creatively, so he just came up with something super random that not only very cringe, very sudden and s*upid.

I cant believe this novel get such high rating. <<less

DID YOU ENJOY YOUR FLEETING MOMENT OF HOPE. Lol honestly just a well written story from my perspective I actually dropped this hobby for a bit for the most part as top releases lost my interest by either being too long or the new ones just not being my thing but this novel is one of the ones that turned me back into a daily reader who needs to lock up their wallet for their own sake.

This is one of the best stories that I have ever read on this site and I love it to death, which is mostly because the characters and plot really scratch an itch for me. So what is the plot? Well its about a demon lord that gets time turned back when he dies and starts living a kind life when the hero tells him too. This is the initial premise and it sounds pretty uninteresting and boring. Well, as it turns out, our protagonist is a VERY unreliable narrator... more>> and this concept becomes insanely twisted. He is sarcastic, brutal, and outright evil sometimes. His definition of a "kind life" is very different than an actually kind life and the story picks up from there. Our protagonist is still very likeable and so are many of the other people that get introduced too.

What truly shines in this story are the characters, with each of the main characters going through development in a very enjoyable and natural way. In addition, it takes a lot of time for these characters to develop and important events really impact them throughout the rest of the story. Then there's the relationships between characters, which feels great to read. Relationships develop along with the characters and it is done in a way that feels much more real than most of the other stories I've read on this site. The romance is great too and it happens with multiple characters other than just the protagonist. And the romance that the protagonist has is especially sweet if you're okay with extremely slow but rewarding and natural romance. So characters 10/10, they don't feel forced at all and they will absolutely be what you like the most in this story, which is very much character driven.

However, at a certain point you will probably think something along the lines of: "This is boring, the story is getting formulaic and I can guess all of the twists", "This character is being too out of character right now", or simply "Something has felt off for the past few arcs". I know this because I, along with some other readers, have thought this at certain points in the story. Although, each time I thought any of these things, I would keep reading and my expectations would get blown out of the water. A new plot point would be introduced that adds a layer of intrigue, a new character is introduced that shakes up the character dynamic, a detail about one of the characters would be revealed that explains there actions, character progression happens that really gets me hyped for what the rest of the story has in store, romance progression FINALLY. I even contemplated dropping the story after a particularly sloe arc that I thought should have ended 30 chapters earlier, and then BANG, one of the best and most emotional arcs in the whole story that made ne regret ever thinking of dropping this story.

Although I will say that this story isn't as perfect as it may seem from me gushing over it for the past few paragraphs. Certain arcs can be hit or miss and the pacing for the plot of these arcs can sometimes make them pretty boring until some big character event happens. Sometimes there just isn't that something that certain arcs and moments had that made them so good. But still, those great moments just elevate the story for me and the whole thing is still really good. I am very attached to these characters and I want to see where they end up.

This story holds a pretty special place in my heart, a lot of the themes, plot elements, and characters cater towards me greatly. Will you like the story as much as I do? Probably not. Is it still a fun and enjoyable story with great characters? Absolutely. So give this story a shot and have a fun time reading it.

BTW, if you're reading this primarily for the action over the characters, you will most definitely not like it as much as I do. That isn't to say the action is the the worst thing in the world, it's just formulaic, especially in the first 150ish chapters. Although I thought that some of the later fights were pretty good as of the time I'm writing this. <<less

Some people have problems with this or that, others day of course there are faults. Some issues are more problematic for some and less for others. Some hate how generic it is, some people enjoy how 'awesome' the MC is. It's really up to you.

For me, it's how much sh*t talking there is in the novel. Aside from the overall story arc, it's just sh*t talking. There is hardly anything else. At first the taunting is kind of nice strategically, but it gets old and annoying fast.

This has been a... more>> casual read for me so I didn't look too much into the overall plot, or think about the depth of the characters. Even with my brain turned off to that point, the sh*t talking still got me annoyed. The MC acts more like a street hooligan than a former demon lord at times.

Try the novel first, don't expect those cool combat details and techniques in the first chapters to ever appear again.

This isn't an action novel. This is hardly an adventure novel. The comedy is just the MC sh*t talking so its not a comedy novel.

This is a mystery novel that is padded by sh*t talking. The mystery isn't even that great and most of the time you can figure it out before the MC gets halfway in. At least for me it's like that. Mediocre, but if you're bored I guess it passes. <<less

I never reviewed any novel on this site. I mean others can comment everything and you don't have anything separate to say. But, for this novel, everyone can have their own opinion. What is liked most in this novel is main protagonist Zich. In single word if you can describe him is Chaos. The novel pure gold. I mean you will literally laughing and crying simultaneously. I will not spoil it, but I will say only one thing. Zich is most rare Korean novel character. And if you read the... more>> novel you will understand why I said this. <<less

Very good novel. It's impossible to avoid the regression trope, but this novel uses it very well to make an OP MC, but avoids almost all the other common tropes associated with regression. The regression also stays as an important plot point which I think is important in a well-crafted story.

Overall I think the strongest part of the novel is the well written MC. He is full of personality and the author does a good job at creating villainous personality that isn't evil. It reminds me of Emporer's Domination if... more>> the MC was more hands-on. MC is ahead of most people both physically and mentally, and the novel does a good job at shining both of these aspects. The author does a good job at writing mystery and comedy as well. The gradual fleshing out of the side characters is great as well. We see them being influenced by the MC as the story progresses.

As I mentioned, the author does a good job at balancing different styles of writing. I think he's very familiar with the common tropes and avoids the pitfalls that can drag down the story like this. This is an action novel, but it's driven by the dialogue and character interactions which lets it avoid the OP MC speedrun that devoids similar novels of all tension. <<less

THE TITTLE IS REALLY MISLEADING. The right tittle must be “the regressed demon lord is “kind” “. MC is helping people but most of the times not in a kind way. To him beating up bad guys is a act of doing kind and he is really ruthless when it come to beating those bad guys. In daily life he is kind but not the foolishly kind type like those jp MC who act without a brain and just do whatever pp told them to do.

And he is kinda op... more>> but at a acceptable range, know how to slap/retort to those annoying characters, can be cold blood when it need him to be, can scheme people, can make joke and acting like a normal charming person. That almost a perfect MC for me. <<less

I just love the MC's character. He weird af. He's one of the most laid back MCs I've read from this type of genre.

Just because of one line that the "hero" said nonchalantly to him in his previous life he decided to literally change his outlook in life. Truly a unique character.

The comedic undertone in this novel is top notch.

Usually I absolutely hate having a main villain that keeps on annoying the MC throughout the novel. Those type of novels stress me out and cause me to drop them very... more>> quickly. However in this novel, pretty much everything is under the Mc's control. We, the readers just have to watch the villain make a clown of himself everytime he goes up against the MC's gang.

Only thing I kind of dislike is the relationship between Zich and Lyla. I hope they become a real couple faster. <<less

It's enjoyable to read, sometimes too cringy and childish but fun nonetheless.

The Main characters are lovely, the character growth are showing, the plot are a little predictable, the enemy is cliche, but overall it's a fun journey until the end.

The novel is fine at first but later on gets very stale, at least for me. At this point, I'm starting to believe the novel would be way more interesting if told from Glen's POV. There's just no tension at all because Zich is so strong. There's no struggle at all. Has there been anything that hasn't gone his way so far? The only thing that comes to my mind is ... more>>
Spoiler

that first elven battle

[collapse]
which was irrelevant to Zich's plan anyway. Suffice to say, it makes it very predictable. On that note, I've seen someone mention that his 'schemes' are similar to pulling uno reverse cards one after the other, and I couldn't agree more.

Another thing that's really annoying is Zich's insults. They're something you would expect from a 10-year-old, if I had to be honest. Yet, somehow the enemies always get enraged at them. Here's one example:

Spoiler

"From that laughter, it seems like you guys know who we are. If possible, could you also take off that dirty mat you are wearing? Ah, but if your face looks like an orc that couldn't possibly belong to a human, I'll understand it if you keep it on. Actually, if that's the case, please don't take off your robes. My mind is really delicate, so if I see a nightmarish human like that, I will be personally affected."

The sound of laughter immediately stopped. It was quickly followed by low murmurs filled with rage. Soon, some stifled laughter muted these murmurs.

"Your group's team spirit is a mess. Even if your companion has an orc face ugly enough to make others run away with their eyes closed, you guys shouldn't laugh at him if you are his companions. Seeing how you guys are all wearing robes, I'm sure all your faces are also quite terrifying to look at." Zich's words instantly halted the laughter that had followed. The insides of the forest were quickly overwhelmed by an ominous silence and bloodlust.

[collapse]

Other than that, it's also weird how the enemies' strength seems to scale with Zich's. It doesn't make sense for some random villain in some random city to be stronger than Zich. Example:
Spoiler

The Janmalpi arc with shadow people. At that point in time, I'd say Zich was already pretty strong. I'd fully expect him to wipe the floor with minor villains by then.

[collapse]

The pacing is generally fine, aside from the
Spoiler

Magic Tower arc

[collapse]
which stretched for so long without being all that fun to read.

The mystery about the regression is really interesting, though. I'll keep reading because of it, but I'm slowly starting to dislike the novel. It's still somewhat fun to read, but some things just sit in the back of my head and irk me every time I read it. <<less

This story is a really fun read. The characters are all super interesting, and Zich is the most entertaining of them all. There are some slower arcs in the story, but each one of those seems to be followed by an arc that blows me away.

The pacing, story telling and translations are all top-tier. It's a generic genre done very well. I know the destination but am excited to witness the journey.

Beginners and fans of the genre will deeply enjoy the novel.

The main plot is quite unique and interesting, but the story heavily lacks anything exciting. It's like a very narrow, straightforward narrative that feels like it takes too long to conclude. By the end, it gets pretty boring and repetitive.

The fights are lackluster. For example, "B swung his sword at A; A dodged and swung his sword at B." That's the entire fight, essentially.

There's no definition or system for the power structure or anything like that either.
It just feels very dry.

Pacing

    • Good pacing but has a few arcs and fights that feel dragged out
Characters

    • "Chad MC"
    • FM is unique and fun
    • Characters are funny and their interactions feel human
    • Was enjoyable to watch the MC effect and changed the people around him
    • Enemies feel dumbed down when convenient (sometimes)
    • MC's personality does get kind of repetitive over the 628 chapters but it's not bad enough to warrant dropping the book
Worldbuilding

    • It's fun and expansive, feels pretty alive but it's not LOTM levels of word building
    • Has it's fair share of mysteries and histories
    • Combat and magic system is alright but doesn't get built upon too much
Plot

    • It's fine albeit very generic and predictable but the author does find ways to make thing interesting
    • MC gets powerups when he conveniently needs it (plot armor pretty heavy on this one)
    • Villains will be smart and powerful until they meet MC (no tension)
    • Fights are done really well
    • Even though it is quite predictable the motives/backstory and the whodunit is still enjoyable
Personal enjoyment

    • Pretty biased here but I probably enjoyed that a lot more then I should of but it's personal preference I guess. I'm a real sucker for this stuff. The main cast has a very enjoyable dynamic in which they're able to bonce off each other when interacting which does feel like the main charm of the book (for me at least).

This book will be much more enjoyable if you turn off your brain and just enjoy the MC going around bashing people's head in.
Overall

6.4/10

A better then average generic korean fantasy that sort of embraces the typical OP MC genre and makes it much more enjoyable then it should be.

Give it a try, if you finish the first book (chapter 50) and still can't rate the book higher than a 7/10 then I can't really see you enjoying the rest.

(btw the MC has this one corny line that he says every time that makes me cringe so hard when he says it :sob: you'll know when you see it)

This is written/translated well, but unfortunately very bland, foreseeable and boring.

MC enters a new scene. MC already knows everything and just acts as if he goes with the BBBs flow. BBB will go blabbermouth on his/her fantastic plan. MC shows how he already knew. BBB goes "shocked pikachu". They fight and MC is better.

Now almost all novels follow a simple plot scheme, but most authors manage to keep it interesting. This novel here is copy & paste. Suspense comes from "shocking plot twists", where a kind character shows how twisted... more>> they are. Yes, it was interesting the first time, but that doesn't mean you can just have the same plot again over and over.

I also expected a bit more from the MC. He doesn't act his age/wisdom and often loses character; most of the time he is "unhinged", but sometimes he suddenly shows perfect morals and humanity -- the gag of the story is that he _doesn't_ know that. He searches for "kindness" and misinterprets it.

3/5. Focuses too much on shocking plot-twists and is very bland and foreseeable. The companions and the training are however pretty cool. <<less

The novel sticks to the formula.

- Some bad guys planning bad things

- MC comes in and fvck em their plan. Bad guy will think he can win but in the end MC will just go *all according to plan*

Small spoiler: ... more>>
Spoiler

"how is your sweet moment of hope"

[collapse]

- Possibly gain/save a new teammate/ ally/ friend

A bit formulaic, yes. But every arc is made uniquely and does progress the story. Sometimes you will know what will happen next, but anticipating 'that' outcome makes this novel lovable. This is such a fun novel and I recommend it to everyone. This is multiple steps higher than faceslapping novels.

Another plus point is that our MC isn't building a harem hero team. Not every person in distress is a peerless beauty. And even if they are, they won't fall for the MC. Not with his sadistic tr*shy personality lol.

Title is cringy though... <<less

Incredible novel, very dark MC but without being too edgy. The title is a bit misleading since it's a bit of a stretch to call him kind. More like "Demon lord does kind deeds to help people while also completely destroying his opponents/enemies." He's strong, but doesn't go out of his way to cause trouble or get into conflict for no reason. Great premise and the quality of writing and translation also don't disappoint. Honestly, this is one of the few novels where I have no complaints. The only downside... more>> would be the low amount of chapters translated currently. <<less

TL;DR: It starts strong, but becomes a slog to read, lame and boring, and lame (I said it twice because it's really lame).

As a disclaimer I must say that I am a big fan of such stories. And I like main character here, he's written as a very strong and smart individual and I believe it and enjoy watching him! That the novel must be good, right? Right?..

From the very beginning it felt kinda slow, but I liked main character, and the story flow in general, so I paid it... more>> no mind. However, reading further felt like going deeper into the swamp, dragging your legs, slower and slower by the minute. At the same time, SOMEHOW, story is filled with frequent timeskips without much purpose to them, so the pacing can be called questionable, but it's not enough to be called outright bad.

You can say that there are no side characters at all. The only ones that are barely interesting aren't the part of the main cast, and the ones who are have so little personality... No, actually just "little" would be an overstatement, there is only void, so empty that it even lessens mc's presence with its black suction. Not only there weren't even many events with main character to shift focus from him, but also characters who recieve it are even less interesting than dumb "Villager C".

There isn't much more to say, really, because there is just too little substence to be happy or upset about, literally nothing. It's not worth your time. <<less
